The golden era of VHS was ideally suited to the Girls with Guns subgenre as video sleeves of attractive women armed to the teeth would invariably be enticing to the target audience. In addition, a large number would mix martial arts with the then current trend for the bullet ballets that was “Heroic Bloodshed”. Female assassins would frequent the plots riffing off “La Femme Nikita” and “The Killer” which leads us to “Dreaming the Reality”, which was recently released as a Blu ray media book in Germany after being absent from home release for some time. Does it escape from the pile of cheap exploitation flicks or return to obscurity? Only one way to find out.

"True action greatness!" Hi-Yah! has released one more official trailer for the "brutally entertaining" Hong Kong action film Raging Fire, which was already released in cinemas in the US a few months back. We've already posted a few trailers for this previously, but with a streaming release on the martial arts channel Hi-Yah! in October, they've dropped off another explosive trailer to enjoy. Donnie Yen stars as Shan, a highly respected hardline cop with a long history of success on dangerous cases. However, his past unexpectedly comes back to haunt him when a sting operation is attacked by a mysterious group of criminals led by Ngo, his former protégé, a talented former officer who had once respected and admired Shan but ended up in prison. Co-starring Nicholas Tse as Ngo, with Jeana Ho, Ray Lui, Patrick Tam, Ben Lam, Deep Ng, and Kang Yu. This honestly might be the best...

The New York Asian Film Foundation and Film at Lincoln Center have announced two final titles, completing the lineup for the upcoming 20th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff). The festival will be screening over 70 films, both virtually and in person, to audiences in New York and across the country from August 6 – 22, 2021. Tickets are already on sale.
Nyaff is thrilled to present as its festival Centerpiece the international premiere of Nyaff favorite director Benny Chan’s final work, Raging Fire. Completed shortly before his untimely death in August 2020, the Hong Kong-Chinese action film stars the inimitable Donnie Yen as Shan, a by-the-book cop whose past returns to haunt him. After a sting operation goes disastrously awry, Shan finds himself pitted against Ngo (Nicholas Tse), a former protégé who has turned criminal mastermind and is out for revenge. Nothing, it seems, can stop him, including his former mentor.

Sometimes you will look at a synopsis and go “huh”. Then you will see the cast and go there’s Tsui Hark, normally a director but occasional comic actor whose persona is so hyperactive that you start twitching just watching him. Then there is John Sham whose shrill performances can be grating rather than funny. You start questioning whether you actually want to watch it. Yet this is a feature that continues to surprise and enthrall. The world of Hong Kong Cinema can be quite an eye opener and this is certainly one to leave expectations at the door and embrace the sheer energy and craziness that somehow just works!

Nowadays it seems that franchises are interested in world building and extended universes and you would think that this was a fairly modern innovation. We’ve always had spin-offs and sequels that introduce an added dimension to a cinematic world and in many respects, Wong Jing’s follow ups to his huge hit “God of Gamblers” could, to a degree, be considered an earlier example of the idea of world building. We started with the God of Gamblers in the original, then the Saint in the Stephen Chow’s more comical sequels. With “The Top Bet” we get introduced to the Saint’s sister and more female centric position before the arrival of “The Saint of Gamblers” that adds another shade of paint to a familiar formula by including a new “Saint” along with Lone Seven, a relation to the originals laconic protector. Now I’m not saying this is...

By 1997, Donnie Yen, who had already acted as action director in a number of productions including “Tiger Cage” and “Wing Chun”, felt comfortable enough to sit in the chair of the main director, much like Yuen Woo-ping had done years ago. And to ensure that “Legend of the Wolf is his film, he also starred, co-wrote, produced and was still the action director. The result, somewhat expectedly, was not exactly great.
The story takes place in two periods, one in the present and one in the past, with the latter being the most significant, to the point that the first one seems somewhat unnecessary. Nevertheless, in the present, Ben, a young man, goes to meet the legendary and undefeated fighter nicknamed the Wolf, in order to ask him to do something from him. Wai, the Wolf’s right hand man and only friend, accompanies him. As he makes his request,...
