HONG KONG -- Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle on Tuesday kicked its way into the Hong Kong Film Awards, sweeping up 16 nominations out of 17 categories. The film, financed by Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, has earned $7.8 million after 40 days in release and is only about $30,000 away from the 2001 boxoffice record held by Chow's previous film, Shaolin Soccer. Chow received nods for best director, best screenplay and best actor while Yuen Wo-ping was nominated for best action choreography. Kung Fu Hustle's other nominations included best film; best actress (Yuen Qiu); best supporting actors (Yuen Wah, Chan Kwok-kwan); best new performer (Huang Shengyi); best cinematography (Poon Hang-sang); best film editing (Angie Lam); and best visual effects (Frankie Chung, Don Ma, Tam Kai-kwan, Franco Hung).
