Robin Williams was known for being a great dramatic actor as much as he was known for his comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire. In Insomnia, Williams used his dramatic chops when working alongside Al Pacino and Christopher Nolan. But when Williams tried to use his comedy on Nolan behind the scenes, Nolan didn’t take to it too well.
How Christopher Nolan handled Robin Williams’ comedy on set Robin Williams | Peter Kramer/Getty Images
Nolan cast Williams in the type of role role that the late comedian wasn’t commonly seen in. The actor portrayed the main antagonist in the 2002 feature Insomnia, who was suspected of committing a brutal crime in Alaska. Williams would battle wits with Al Pacino in the feature, the latter of which was cast as the movie’s tormented detective.

“We are now beginning our final descent.” Isn’t that statement, announced over the intercom of an empty plane, an eerie way to end the Manifest trailer for the fourth and final season? The 10 episodes from Part 1 of the drama’s final season premiere on Netflix on November 4, and as part of the streaming service’s Tudum event, we now have a trailer that not only very quickly recaps what’s happened so far but also gives us a lot to look forward to about what’s next after the two-year time jump. Peter Kramer/Netflix The 828ers only have 18 months before their Death Date, when the returned are destined to die just as they would have after however long they were gone passes. So understandably, things are a little tense. There are more Callings to be had — including one that Ben (Josh Dallas) calls “awful” — as well as more...

On it's anniversary, Peter Kramer takes a closer look at the film’s critical and commercial success, and at the rather puzzling way in which it tells Benjamin’s story.
A young man returning home to his parents in Los Angeles after graduating from college is seduced by the wife of his father’s business partner and then falls in love with her daughter. This unusual love triangle, presented, with a lot of humour, in both erotically charged and touchingly emotional scenes, is at the centre of The Graduate, which was released fifty years ago in December 1967.
There is much else going on in the film.

During his life, Hugh Hefner was a icon of American pop culture, a supporter of civil rights, an advocate and champion of the sexual revolution in the 1960s and an entrepreneurial success story.
While many recognize that his legacy -- for good and for bad -- is a complicated one, the Playboy founder was often a fount of positivity when it came to his outlook on life and his thoughts on emotional and professional success.
As a reflection on the publishing magnate's life and personal philosophy, we're looking back at some of his greatest quotes and pearls of wisdom from his many Et interviews over the past decades.

Peter Kramer looks at the history of the controversy surrounding Kubrick's film.
As a teenage Science Fiction fan in Germany, I came across a translation of Anthony Burgess’s 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange in the mid-1970s. The novel is a first person narrative, in which eighteen-year-old Alex, living in an unidentified European country of the near future, looks back on his life during the preceding years. The novel is written in the made-up slang of this futuristic teenager (which, to be honest, I found quite hard to read). Alex relates the series of brutal crimes he has committed, notably two murders and the rape of two ten-year-old girls, and the punishment he has received, which includes an experimental aversion therapy.

In his latest piece, Peter Kramer explores everything from Disney to Lucas to Pixar.
Much of contemporary Hollywood cinema – in particular its reliance on special effects driven Science Fiction and fantasy films addressed to youth audiences as well as children and their parents – can be explained with reference to the enormous impact of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Star Wars (1977). I have outlined this in my last two contributions to Pure Movies. But there is, of course, more to this story than I have been able to tell so far.
When I did my initial research on Star Wars about twenty years ago, I was surprised to find that, in addition to referencing 2001, both George Lucas and the film’s critics and audiences in the United States described it as a kind of Disney movie.

“ I’m 81. I could go at any moment. I could fall over right here, on stage. And then you could all say: ‘I was there!’”
Joan Rivers uttered those words on stage at the Laurie Beechman Theater in New York on 27 August. Barely a week later, she was gone. She didn’t die on stage, which is a shame in a way – as someone so renowned for pushing boundaries and setting out to shock, you get the impression she would have got a kick out of that.
The day after her set in New York, Rivers was admitted to the Yorkville Endoscopy clinic to undergo a fairly routine procedure on her vocal cords. During the operation, she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest, triggering a stroke. The comedienne was put into a medically induced coma and given life support but never recovered, and she passed away on 4 September.

Peter Kramer looks at the story of loss and resurrection that transformed cinema in the late 1970s.
Within a few weeks of its release in May 1977, Star Wars was already being discussed as the beginning of a new era in film history. According to a Chicago Sun-Times headline in June 1977, for example, Star Wars was ‘The First Movie of the 1980s’, leaving behind the negativity and complications of many 70s films.[1] There was disagreement about how this shift was to be evaluated.

We polled 87 culture-makers (and appreciators) on everything from the year’s best movies and music to the superiority of certain superheroes and TV families. While our less-than-scientific process did reveal clear favorites (a certain catchy pop tune with the words “call” and “maybe”), we also uncovered unique interest in, among other things, the contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race and crying on airplanes. *This article originally appeared in the December 10, 2012 issue of New York Magazine. No prizes for guessing why George Lucas might sell his company for $4bn, but this deal is the upshot of a complex creative relationship that has developed over decades
Why would George Lucas sell Lucasfilm, and why would Disney buy it? In some ways, the answer is obvious: both parties see an opportunity to make money. Lucas gains billions of dollars in return for a company that has developed perhaps as far as he can; Disney gains the rights to exploit some of the most valuable media properties of the last 30 years. While this is undeniably true, the deal announced this week can also be understood as the culmination of a long, complex relationship between Disney and Star Wars.
According to most accounts, George Lucas never really expected the first Star Wars to be a hit when it was released in 1977. He had already shown a rough cut of the...

“A Crowd of Demons”
Written By: Sonny Postiglione
Directed By: Robbie Duncan McNeill
Original Airdate: 28 October 2012
In This Episode...
It’s Halloween at the Drake. Hooray! Gavin is getting threatening texts from an anonymous cell phone, and Olivia is nearly run over by a speeding SUV, but they still hold the annual Drake Halloween party. During the party, Olivia is gassed by a man wearing an antique gas mask, just to scare Olivia. He then steals an ornately carved wooden box from Gavin’s safe and leaves the gas mask in its place.
The man/smoke monster who was locked up in the suitcase was Peter Kramer. On Halloween night, 1929, he went home and butchered his wife with an axe in apartment 5F of the Drake. It is unclear if he killed himself or not. The little girl ghost that has been haunting Jane was Peter’s daughter.

Have you ever noticed how on Halloween-based episodes of most shows, the characters always have the most elaborate costumes ever? I'm always spinning my thinking wheels trying to come up with something at the last minute, so I can only imagine the amount of planning that went into picking out the outfits on 666 Park Avenue.
Louise and Brian as Cleopatra and Marc Antony, Henry and Jane as a sheriff and Tippi Hedren from Hitchcock's The Birds, Alexis as the sexy nurse, and the Dorans as, well... I'm not sure what they were dressed as. Dressed to impress? I guess when you're that rich and famous, you don't have to play by the rules.
Of course, with the show seated within a scary and supernatural aspect, a Halloween episode like "A Crowd of Demons" was not the throw away fun and cheesy hour you might expect. Everything felt right at home with the continuously evolving secrets,...

Game's pockets are about to become significantly lighter. On Tuesday, a North Carolina appeals court judge ruled that the Documentary Mc pay $5 million in damages to five Greensboro police officers upholding a 2006 ruling, according to a report for local North Carolina affiliate My Fox 8.
The suit stems from an October 2005 incident, when Game was arrested at the Four Seasons Town Centre mall in North Carolina. A week after attending a memorial service for his friend and "Jackass" co-star Ryan Dunn, Bam Margera sat down for an interview with E! Online to discuss the car accident that took the lives of Dunn and friend Zachary Hartwell and talk about the final message he got from his fellow daredevil.
"He was my best f---ing friend in the world. It's been five days now, and I can't stop crying, man," Margera said. "I just don't think it should've been him."
Looking drawn and tired, with wife Melissa Rothstein by his side holding his hand, Margera said the phone call he received about the accident was "pretty much the worst news I've ever heard in my life."

We admit it. We are just a teenytiny bit swept up the last minute excitement over the Royal Wedding. Notbecause we particularly care about the monarchy, or weddings for that matter, butbecause as far as major pop culture moments go, something this big doesn’thappen every day.

Sheryl Crow says bringing her two boys on tour gives a whole new meaning to the word “afterparty”.
She tells The Guardian that before she arrives in a new city for a show, she Googles the location to plan the day for herself and sons Wyatt Steven, 3½, and Levi James, 6 months.
“It’s parks, aquariums, museums in the mornings,” Crow, 48, explains.
“Then lunch, a nap for them, soundcheck for me, dinner all together, and then I tuck them in their bunks before going on stage. As soon as the show is over, I’m back on the bus and to sleep — hopefully.

Madonna‘s no stranger to fun, avant garde fashions. And neither is her mini me — Lourdes Leon.
So it only makes sense that the mega-star and her 13-year-old daughter (a.k.a. Lola) are lending their distinct style savvy to a junior’s collection for Macy’s — just in time for back-to-school shopping.
Full of flirty minidresses, cute accessories, skinny jeans and on-trend jackets ($12 to $40), the affordable line — aptly named Material Girl — is set to hit stores on August 3.
After getting a sneak peak of the just-released sketches, we’re beyond excited. We can’t wait for the fall!

Life in front of the camera is familiar territory for singer-actress Brandy Norwood, but it’s territory she says her daughter will not traverse anytime soon.
Sy’rai Iman, 8, does not appear on screen in the reality show Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business – and it is no accident.
“That’s strictly because her father [Robert Smith] and I felt it was best for her to have as much of a normal life as possible,” Norwood, 31, reveals to Parade.
“Of course, you’ve seen her on one episode on For the Love of Ray J, but it wasn’t every day.
