Spielberg, one of the two richest directors of all time (equals the same $8 billion fortune as George Lucas), recently found it hard to break through the box office but maintained his legacy among critics.

Steven Spielberg’s next film has set a summer 2026 release date, which suggests he’s got something blockbuster-y up his sleeves. More here.
Last month we covered the widely-reported story that emerged online, stating that Steven Spielberg’s next film would be a UFO movie. This, of course, would mark a return to subject matter that has fascinated the directing legend throughout his career. Across films like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and War Of The Worlds, Steven Spielberg often explored very personal and intimate themes set against the vast backdrop of the infinite and unknowable mysteries of the universe.
The other thing these films all had in common was that they made a lot of money, embellishing Spielberg’s status as a major box office draw. That was a reputation that he first established in 1975 with Jaws, a film that is generally regarded as...

The last time Steven Spielberg brought a film to cinemas, we got the semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age drama The Fabelmans. While he's kept busy as a producer on other things, we've not heard all that much about future directing plans. All that changed today as Universal has announced a new "event movie" from Spielberg scheduled for release in 2026.
Much of the specific details on the film are still being kept quiet – though Variety recently reported that the director has been developing a new take on UFOs as part of his typically hefty To Do list, which means we could be in for a new close encounter.
And behind the scenes, the new project will mark a reunion for Spielberg and David Koepp, who wrote the likes of Jurassic Park, War Of The Worlds and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, among others.

The iconic Steven Spielberg has been focusing more on human dramas as of late, except for the occasional special effects-laden vehicles like Ready Player One and The Bfg — even sitting out Indiana Jones for the first time with the last entry, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. However, Deadline has now revealed that Universal Pictures has reserved a release date for May 15, 2026, for what is being described as an “original event film” that has been created by and will be directed by Spielberg.
It is not revealed what the event film is. However, it was reported last month that Spielberg would reunite with frequent collaborator David Koepp for an original UFO movie that has been kept very secretive. The UFO movie is said to be based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that would be all the information given at this point.

The king has returned ... and he's bringing a very familiar collaborator along with him. It's been a long, painful year and a half since Steven Spielberg last blessed us with his work in "The Fabelmans" -- look, we'd take a new Spielberg joint every six months if we could -- but there's some light on the horizon once more. One of the most talented and prolific filmmakers in living memory is already looking ahead to his next production, which we now know will hit theaters almost exactly two years from this very moment in time.

We had learned earlier this year that Steven Spielberg was reteaming with David Koepp (Jurassic Park) on an untitled “UFO film based on his own original idea,” and it would appear that Universal Pictures has dated that project for release this afternoon.
Universal will be bringing an untitled “original event film” from Steven Spielberg to theaters on May 15, 2026, which has David Koepp as the writer. It feels safe to say, all things considered, that this is the aforementioned UFO movie, but we’ve got no confirmation at this time.

Interesting to note, Koepp is himself returning to his early roots with the next installment in the Jurassic World franchise. He’ll be writing next year’s untitled new installment.

Universal Pictures has dated an “untitled event film” directed by Steven Spielberg for a wide release on Friday, May 15, 2026. The story will be by Spielberg and the screenplay by his frequent collaborator David Koepp. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.

When reached by IndieWire, a spokesperson for Universal Pictures declined comment on the UFO detail.

Steven Spielberg has lined up his next feature film, which will be released in 2026.
Universal Pictures is backing the movie, which will open in theaters on May 15, 2026. It’s unclear what the untitled project — which the studio described as a “new original event film” — is about, though Variety previously reported that Spielberg is working on a UFO story.
David Koepp, whose previous work with the filmmaker includes “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” is writing the script from a story by Spielberg. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce the film.
Spielberg, who does not need much of an introduction, is Hollywood’s most commercially successful filmmaker, having helmed blockbusters like “Jaws” and “E.T.,” on top of the “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park” franchises. He’s also a three-time Oscar winner for “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan.”
He most recently directed “The Fabelmans” for Universal.

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow has set her next feature film at Netflix. The streamer confirmed the project during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday afternoon in New York.
No title or plot details were revealed. The project marks Bigelow’s first feature since the 2017 police brutality period film “Detroit,” which was produced and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. Though that feature received positive reviews, it failed to capture the awards and commercial success of the director’s previous two works: the controversial 2012 CIA manhunt thriller “Zero Dark Thirty” and the acclaimed 2009 Iraq war feature “The Hurt Locker,” which won six categories at the 2010 Academy Awards including best picture. For “Hurt Locker,” Bigelow became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for best director.
Since “Detroit,” Bigelow has directed an Apple commercial and a short film. In March 2022, Netflix announced the filmmaker would helm an adaptation of screenwriter David Koepp’s disaster novel “Aurora,...

It was reported last month that Kathryn Bigelow had dropped out of directing an adaptation of the apocalyptic David Koepp novel “Aurora” for Netflix as new film chief Dan Lin was starting his role. But one of Lin’s first green lights will reportedly be a different Bigelow film with a similarly apocalyptic bent.
According to a report in Puck, “The Hurt Locker” director Bigelow has been tapped to direct a thriller about the White House’s real-time response efforts to an incoming ballistic missile attack on American soil. The script for the film is written by Noah Oppenheim, and the project is expected to be formally announced when Netflix hosts its Upfronts presentation to advertisers next week.
Puck also reported that despite the green light, Bigelow was “visibly annoyed” in regards to notes from Lin asking for the film to cut its budget and length. The report adds that...

Nobody was expecting it, but it’s true: two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal – who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the 2010 film Crazy Heart and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for writing her 2021 feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter – is writing and directing a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). The Bride! is currently making its way through production and unveiling images that are intriguing, even if there are jarring elements to them. So we thought this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Bride!
Studio And Release Date
The Bride! is not set up at Universal Pictures, so this isn’t an official remake of The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s a play on the same concepts found in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that inspired the 1935 film.

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the biggest box office bombs of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list contains five titles and we are going to reveal them to you, as well as all the relevant numbers. Long story short, out of the five titles on this list, four belong to Disney/MCU and one to Warner, so it seems that Disney is undoubtedly the biggest loser of 2023, especially since some of the titles in question are major ones. I have had a strong appreciation for the 1990 sci-fi action thriller I Come in Peace, which is also known by the title Dark Angel in some territories, ever since it first came out when I was a kid, and several of my cohorts here on JoBlo are fans of the film as well – with John “The Arrow” Fallon recommending it and Chris Bumbray calling it “The Best Christmas Action Movie You Never Saw.” So we’re excited to hear that Shout Factory will be giving the film a 4K release on July 9th – and if you’re also a fan of this movie and want to add the 4K release to your collection, it’s available for pre-order at This Link!

Steven Spielberg is one maverick director among his contemporaries who has mastered every genre in the cinema handbook. The director has made intense thrillers, sci-fi dramas, historical/war epics, and comedies. Spielberg can do no wrong and as an ardent lover of cinema, he has no plans of slowing down.
Henry Thomas in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Veteran director Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to The Fabelmans will be a return to a subject that the filmmaker has history with: UFOs.
Since the release of The Fabelmans at the beginning of 2023, Steven Spielberg hasn’t announced his next project. As is always the case, we know the filmmaker has things cooking away: there’s the remake of Bullitt that looked to be in pole position to be the director’s next film to go in front of cameras. There’s also the Cape Fear TV series for Apple that he’s setting up with Martin Scorsese, not to mention the Ready Player One sequel that he will be stepping back from but still producing.
However, we didn’t know what Spielberg’s next directorial project until now. Variety is claiming that the veteran filmmaker’s next move is to ‘likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea.

It’s been a while since Steven Spielberg has dabbled in the world of extra-terrestrials, but according to a report from Variety, the acclaimed director is working on a UFO movie which will likely be his next project.
Sources told Variety that the UFO movie is based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have at this point, but a UFO movie from the man who gave us Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is hard to ignore. Koepp has penned a handful of Spielberg movies, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg always moves fluidly from genre to genre, and perhaps there’s no better example than the recent 30th anniversary of 1993’s “Schindler’s List,” which was released the same year as the couldn’t-be-totally-different “Jurassic Park.” And so, coming off his grounded and very personal family drama, “The Fabelmans,” for his next film, Spielberg might be going back to the sci-fi genre again.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential and celebrated directors of all time. He helped define the blockbuster, established the look and feel of '80s genre fare, and gave us the best (and possibly only well-shot) big-budget studio musical of the last decade. But despite getting his start in science fiction, Spielberg has mostly distanced himself from the genre in the past decade or so.
Still, Spielberg has remained an ardent fan of the genre, praising recent gems such as "Godzilla Minus One" and proclaiming his fandom for Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two." Perhaps this has rekindled a passion for sci-fi in 77-year-old Spielberg, seeing as he's now getting ready to return to one of his favorite subjects — aliens.
According to Variety, Spielberg is likely going to "make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea." David Koepp is writing the screenplay, according to the outlet's sources.

Martin Scorsese is taking on biopics of both Jesus and a music god: Frank Sinatra.
The Oscar-winning auteur is rumored to be once more developing a biopic based on the legendary crooner — a project Scorsese’s been associated with before — with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to portray Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. Variety reported the news. DiCaprio recently starred in Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and also led other Scorsese-helmed biopics like “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Aviator.”
Variety noted that Frank Sinatra’s daughter Tina Sinatra controls her father’s estate and hasn’t yet approved a film adaptation of his life story. However, Scorsese is already looking to cast both DiCaprio and fellow Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence in the film, with Lawrence portraying screen star Ava Gardner, who was Sinatra’s second wife after Nancy Barbato. Lawrence and DiCaprio co-starred in “Don’t Look Up.

Fresh off baring his soul and telling his own life story in the Oscar-nominated movie The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg is reportedly headed back into the world of extraterrestrials!
Variety notes in a report this week that Spielberg will “likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea,” set to be written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park).
Interesting to note, Koepp is himself returning to his early roots with the next installment in the Jurassic World franchise. He’ll be writing next year’s untitled new installment.
Steven Spielberg is of course no stranger to extraterrestrial encounters, directing two of the greatest alien movies of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. in 1982. It’s an arena he returned to in 2005, directing an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

It’s been at least 15 years since Martin Scorsese first got involved with a biopic of Frank Sinatra, an almost too-logical pairing of Italian-Americans of a certain age from the tri-state area. Around the time of Hugo, Scorsese was so excited by 3D he considered shooting it and Silence (!) on the format; needless to say this did not come to pass. Many years went by, rights evaporated, and the busier-by-the-day octogenarian seemingly moved on.
Which makes it a great surprise, per Variety, that Scorsese’s perhaps more eager than ever to move forward: Leonardo DiCaprio is (of course) his consideration for ol’ blue eyes, while Jennifer Lawrence would portray Ava Gardner, Sinatra’s second wife and the woman who most drove him insane. Apple (of Flower Moon) and Sony are interested, which matters less when Tina Sinatra, the estate owner, has yet to give blessing. One thinks, however, it’s just a matter of time.

Mark Twain once quipped, “Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it, it doesn’t matter.” When it comes to Martin Scorsese, age certainly isn’t making a difference. After landing 10 Oscar nominations for last year’s historical crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the 81-year-old director has mapped out his next several projects. Sources say he plans to shoot two films back to back: the first about Jesus, the second a Frank Sinatra biopic.

Life is finding a way to fill the cast of the new Jurassic World sequel from the original Jurassic Park co-writer David Koepp. The new film has been courting actors like Scarlett Johansson, and recently, it is being rumored that Dev Patel and Colman Domingo are being sought out for roles. It’s a new era for dinosaurs. Bailey is also coming off the recent series Fellow Travelers, in which he co-stars with Matt Bomer,...

Following reports suggesting Dev Patel might be joining Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic City, more names are now in the casting mix.
Watching the film that may or may not be called Jurassic City come together in double quick time has been a fun process to observe. First David Leitch was directing, then he was out due to ‘creative differences’. Then, Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker behind Rogue One and The Creator was in, working on a script by original Jurassic Park writer, David Koepp.
Since then, Scarlett Johansson and Dev Patel are both rumoured to have signed up for the project which, unbelievably, is set to arrive in cinemas next summer.
While huge productions like this one aren’t well known for coming together quickly and then going on to be brilliant, we’re heartened by the stories that originally circulated suggesting that Universal was looking to fast track this production...

Gareth Edwards is in the director's chair for the new entry, which reportedly will tell a new story set in the World, er, world, which means pivoting focus away from the likes of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard (or the original Jurassic Park trio). But there is one veteran Park person involved — writer David Koepp has crafted the script for this new film.
