The Aftermath is set in postwar Germany in 1945. Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.

From the wreckage of Allied-bombed Hamburg comes the post-World War II romantic triangle “The Aftermath,” and suddenly the problems of three little people amount to a hill of blah in this handsomely mounted, but hopelessly machine-pressed game of who are sacrificing more to escape the rubble of shattered desire and lingering grief.
Director James Kent’s adaptation of Rhidian Brook’s 2014 novel — about a ghost-like Germany, a broken British marriage, and the healing powers of a passionate thaw — has the unfortunate quality of a hot-blooded soap grafted onto rather than merged with a historical-political drama. The result exhibits little feel for how each genre’s particular needs might interfere with the other’s, or how the film’s trio of capable actors might be properly utilized.

It’s been five years since the TV academy adopted the Supporting Visual Effects category in an effort to honor subtle, less dominant work. It’s hard for a prestige drama with set extensions and other environmental re-creations to compete with “Game of Thrones.” (Luckily that’s not an issue this year.) Previous winners include “Boardwalk Empire,” “Banshee,” “Black Sails,” “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” and “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.”
This season it’s a battle between “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” joined by “Genius,” “Gotham,” and “Taboo.” All feature splendid environmental work that help conjure the retro Gilead or recreate Buckingham Palace, gritty 19th century London, 1920’s Berlin, and present-day Manhattan.

The Academy welcomes its new members at an invite only event in September, just as we begin to feel the rumblings of Oscar buzz everywhere.
While not every person nominated for the first time for an Oscar in any given year is invited to join the next year (isn't that weird?) it's common practice that they are. So new names like Lupita Nyong'o, Barkhad Abdi, and more established actors like Sally Hawkins and June Squibb will all be voting for the first time this coming season after walking the red carpets as nominees. That's expected. What's far more interesting is the people invited in any given year that have not been nominated.
Here are ten names I want to highlight because they're interesting invitations for one reason or another.
Sean Bobbitt - Cinematographer (12 Years a Slave) - egregiously snubbed last year which might have done it but that's not his only beautifully shot film.

Robin Hood is to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week but we’ve seen it and here’s our review. In the movie, we see Ridley Scott re-team with Russell Crowe in their fifth collaboration together. Many have wondered if Crowe can pull off the task of making a convincing Robin Hood. Read on to find out what I thought! The cast includes Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Kevin Durand, Mark Addy, William Hurt, Danny Huston and Max von Sydow.
This version of Robin Hood looks closely at how Robyn of Loxley becomes the man that we’ve come to know, and how he became one who steals from the rich to give to the poor. We get to see Robin (or Robyn if we believe the fables) fighting to get home after the crusades and how he comes to meet Will Scarlett (Scott Grimes...

Want another look at Janty Yates’ costume design work for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Robin Hood? Thought you might.
Most of the ensembles seem to be late Medieval inspired, though we must also factor in creative license and a diverse historical timeline behind the original folk story. This is the origin of outlaw Robin Hood without the singing and probably with a lot of pummeling. Difficult for Janty Yates, as the setting predetermines what we expect to see, yet we also want something new.
In other words, it has to look like traditional Robin Hood with a ‘modern’ twist – and that does not mean Reebok in the Hood Pumps and Spartacus wristwatches. Yates had a difficult task alright, marrying history with creativity.
Anyway, see what you think below:
Russell Crowe as Robin Longstride wearing a thick, brown leather hood. For those living in the elements, hide and lots of it...

Even if it never finds an audience outside L.A., someone ought to write a book called When Dull Films Happen To Clever Production Designers. It would probably help console Babylon A.D. designers Paul Cross and Sonja Klaus. Their work helps the film realize a near-future living in the wake of a profound ecological and/or economic collapse. (What's happened is never made clear, but it was obviously unpleasant.) Most of the world lives in a sprawling, Third World black market where a rabbit trapped in a city park qualifies as a feast. The privileged few inhabit desolate urban palaces where any piece of glass can, and usually does, serve as a television screen. Blade Runner and Children Of Men did it before and better, but this world is made to look both lived-in and ickily plausible. In fact, maybe Cross and Klaus should write that book. They wouldn't be the.
