Tom Cruise has had more than a few love scenes in his long and successful career. But there was perhaps only one love scene that left him sustaining a bloody injury.

Cocktail wasn’t the most well-received movie Cruise had done in his long career. It’s mostly known for being the actor’s lowest-rated film to date. However, for Cruise and his co-star, the movie was also remembered for its intense love scene. Cruise had Killer Joe actor Gina Gershon as his love interest.
It was Gershon’s first major studio picture at the time. When working with Cruise, Gershon shared how he looked out for the inexperienced star. When she had to remove her bra for instance, Cruise made sure that no one else would be able to see her bare chest.

Every journalist who covered Hollywood in the Golden Era that stretched roughly from Risky Business (1983) through Top Gun: Maverick (now) has had a Tom Cruise moment. I had mine in 2002.
My father had just died. It was a rough death, not quick, and as I was driving back for the last time from attending him in Sacramento, I made myself a promise: I would be at peace with everyone for a while. No fighting. No arguments. What anyone asked, insofar as I could, I would just do.
As luck would have it, the first test occurred somewhere around Bakersfield. On the road, I got a call from Maer Roshan, now editor of Los Angeles Magazine, then editorial director of Tina Brown’s Talk.
We have a problem, explained Maer. Talk had scheduled some sort of theme issue–something about business and/or professional life in America. But Tina had managed...

Harry Clein, a co-founder of PR Agencies Clein + Feldman and Clein + White, died June 18 in Atlanta, Ga. He was 82.
The Hollywood publicist suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (Copd). His agencies represented numerous successful projects, from “Steel Magnolias” and “Heathers” to “Dazed and Confused.”
His first project at Clein + Feldman, which he founded in 1981 with Bruce Feldman, was “Sophie’s Choice.” The firm became Clein + White in 1989 when Cara White joined as a partner and Feldman left to work at the studios.
Clein also spearheaded the publicity and marketing for “The Blair Witch Project,” a new style of horror film that won the Independent Spirit Award and pioneered the found footage genre. The campaign focused on targeting youth audiences and integrated the internet into promotional plans, which was uncommon at the time, while also following traditional strategies.

Harry Clein, a veteran film publicist who wrote the original press notes for Star Wars and helped develop the innovative internet campaign for The Blair Witch Project, died June 18 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder in Atlanta. He was 82.
His death was announced by spokesperson Mark Pogachefsky.
Clein, along with Bruce Feldman, cofounded the Clein + Feldman agency in 1981. Their first client was director Alan J. Pakula and his film Sophie’s Choice.

As anniversaries go, June 24, 2005, is probably one Tom Cruise would rather forget. That was the date of his notorious showdown with Matt Lauer on Today — but in truth, the whole monthlong press tour for the Cruise/Steven Spielberg blockbuster War of the Worlds could have benefited from a do-over.

Exclusive: In a major shakeup at the entertainment publicity/marketing firm 42West, preeminent publicist Leslee Dart will shed the co-ceo title she has shared with Amanda Lundberg. Dart will take a newly created senior strategic advisor role at Dolphin Entertainment, which made 42West its first acquisition in the PR/marketing space in a $28 million deal in 2017. Lundberg will become sole CEO and run 42West day to day from its New York headquarters.
Dolphin subsequently acquired The Door and Viewpoint Creative, and most recently the music PR firm Shore Fire. Two more acquisitions in the space will be made this year, and Dart will take on a supervisory role in pulling those pieces together and making them compatible as Dolphin continues to grow under president Bill O’Dowd. Pat Kingsley is a legend in the world of personal publicity, but to Jennifer Allen and Melissa Kates, their Pmk boss was a mentor, trusted confidante and, as she remains to this day, a friend. When major PR firms merge, they’re usually consolidating in order to stay on top. It’s a little different for former standalones Pmk-Bnc (which has merged at least four times in 40 years) and Rogers & Cowan: Both are owned by the publicly traded Interpublic Group (2018 revenue: $9.71 billion). Now, they will form a single firm (yet to be named) that will represent more than 500 clients and 30 brands.
So why the change? The combo creates a more impressive client list, and will allow them to trim the expenses and other redundancies that come when two entities merge. It’s the easiest and fastest way to become bigger while meeting the demands of their corporate overlords.
Of course, bigger is not always better. Still, when the new company officially launches January 1, it will dwarf Kelly Bush and Mara Buxbaum’s ID-pr. It will also become one of the top 20 PR firms in the world,...

It's only January 14, but I guarantee that the 2013 Golden Globes will be the best awards show of the entire year. Why? Because the Golden Globes are gloriously useless, and its attendees are aware of that fact. That's why everyone onscreen appears to be having a great, fun time filled with unrehearsed moments. The Golden Globes combine the gaudiness of "Night of 100 Stars" with the hilarious posturing of a student council election. Frankly, we should call them the Pia Zadora's Choice Awards. Respect. Or don't! Both options are completely acceptable and fun.

Lois Smith, who died last weekend from complications due to a fall, helped to define modern PR. Back in 1971, she founded, along with Pat Kingsley (who handled Tom Cruise for years), New York's Pickwick Public Relations, and went on to pursue production at Marble Arch and United Artists before returning to her first love. In 1980, Kingsley's Pickwick merged with Michael Maslansky and Neil Koenigsberg's La press agency Maslansky/Koenigsberg, to become the mighty P/M/K, which ruled Hollywood PR in the 90s under Kingsley, the returned Smith and Leslee Dart. New York uber-publicist Peggy Siegal (see her tribute below) was nurtured and mentored by Smith, and worked with her at Pickwick, Smith & Siegal and P/M/K before launching her own praisery (as Variety would call it). Smith was a class act with a booming bonhomie who did not stoop to conquer. She was maternal and generous with her knowledge,...

A forthcoming Vanity Fair article about the Scientologist movie star promises eye-popping revelations. It's the final proof that he has become the new Michael Jackson
In his excellent essay on Michael Jackson, now titled simply Michael and included in the recently published collection Pulphead, Us journalist John Jeremiah Sullivan looks with clear eyes and a gossipy but open mind at how the media – specifically the white media – lobbed "passive-aggressive accusations" against Jackson for pretty much his entire adult life: "We moan that Michael changed his face out of self- loathing. He may have loved what he became," writes Sullivan.
I'll admit, I find it difficult to imagine that Jackson – who, according to Sullivan, was using medication to knock himself out not for hours but whole days – was a man overburdened with self-love. But Sullivan does touch on one of the many sad truths about Jackson's life: how useful he was...

Tom Cruise is 50 years old on Tuesday (July 3). That's right, the "Born on the 4th of July" actor was born on the 3rd of July. Unfortunately, his half-century achievement has been somewhat eclipsed by news that Katie Holmes, his wife of six years, filed for divorce on Friday. She's also asked for sole custody of the couple's child, Suri.
Since Tom's likely going through a rough time, Zap2it is giving him the gift of wise counsel. Not that Tom's in need of any more advisers, but we think we have a great 10-step plan that will not only redeem Tom in the eyes of the public, but make him the best dad he can be to his three children and, you know, not so unapproachably freaky.

Once the famous just fronted charity appeals. Now an increasing number are putting their weight behind political causes. Leo Benedictus investigates the rise of the celebrity activist
These are early days, of course, but it is possible Hugh Grant has changed the world. These are early days, of course, but it is possible Hugh Grant has changed the world. Five simple steps to get the TomKat back to being Hollywood's Top Gun
Something happened to Tom Cruise's career in the last five years: the overlapping Venn diagram of Cruise The Movie Star and Cruise The Crazy Couch Jumper just got bigger and bigger. His audience hasn't been able to see the woods for the Xenu for quite a while now. His new film Knight And Day ($20m on its opening weekend) was walloped at the box office in the Us, playing third fiddle to Adam Sandler's bromance Grown Ups ($41) and Toy Story 3 ($59m). This follows the turkeys that were Lions For Lambs ($7m) and Valkyrie ($21). Alarmingly, his next outings don't look like they're going to rescue this sinking ship: a Tropic Thunder spin-off as the greaseball agent Les Grossman (fat suit ahoy!), Mission: Impossible IV (zzz) and rumours of a Top Gun sequel. What's next? A...

hollywoodnews.com: Tom Cruise is back. Well, he obviously wants to come back. So badly it hurts.
A month before James Mangold’s “Knight and Day,” returns Cruise to the big screen on June 25th, the star’s p.r. machine is purring and humming.
Right now, we’re inundated with Cruise doing promos for the MTV Movie Awards as his “Tropic Thunder” character, Les Grossman. It’s not so funny, but Cruise is milking it. They’ve even combined it with a parody of “Risky Business.” Cruise wants to remind the world that before he jumped on couches, suddenly found Katie Holmes, and made promotional videos for Scientology, he was just a fun guy in Ray Bans and tighty whiteys.
And Tom is on the cover of Esquire, giving minimal answers to softball questions. He’s blaming his deadbeat father for everything. Poor Mr. Mapother cannot defend himself,...

Warner Bros. publicists took the spotlight Wednesday as the studio's moody campaign on behalf of "The Dark Knight" and its media efforts for the Warners-produced CW show "Gossip Girl" copped the Icg Publicists' showmanship awards.
The union publicists also bestowed showman of the year honors on husband-and-wife film producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall as well as TV comedy veteran Chuck Lorre.
"This event is an opportunity for us to do a little bragging and let the world know that we are the ones who put the show in show business," awards chairman Henri Bollinger said.
The 46th annual awards honored outstanding achievement by media publicists and journalists. As customary, presenters and honorees offered a healthy measure of irreverent humor in remarks from the podium.
"With all the changes at the Screen Actors Guild, they've just announce a new spokesperson: Christian Bale," Icg Publicists president Steven Poster deadpanned.

Tom Cruise's publicists have dismissed reports they've been replaced by his sister.
According to sources close to the Cruise camp, the movie star rehired his sister Lee Anne De Vette as his publicist last week (ends19Sep08) - but his aides insist that's not the case.
A statement from publicity firm Rogers + Cowan reads, "We at Rogers + Cowan represent Tom Cruise worldwide in the area of publicity and public relations. Lee Anne DeVette, who is his sister, is not involved in this area for her brother at all.
"As it was announced three years ago, she remains as his assistant working in areas of his production company that do not include publicity or public relations."
De Vette replaced Cruise's longtime PR guru Pat Kingsley; she stepped down to concentrate on production matters in 2005.
According to HollyScoop.com, DeVette assists her brother by raising the profile of the good works that he does on behalf of children's health issues, mentoring and literacy.

Uber-entertainment publicist Pat Kingsley is stepping down as CEO of PMK/HBH, a company she helped make into one of the biggest firms in entertainment PR. Moving into that position are partners Cindi Berger and Simon Halls, who will act as co-CEOs. The firm's exec vp brands and events Nate Schreiber will be elevated to president.
Kingsley, 75, will remain with the company, assuming the new title of nonexecutive chairman. The position will allow her to keep working with her clients such as Michael Mann, Jodie Foster and Sally Field, but leave running the company to others.
"I'm going to be coming to work, but you won't see a balance sheet in front of me," Kingsley told The Reporter. "I won't have to do any administration work. I can do creative work with clients, which is the part that I think I do best."
Kingsley founded the company in 1980 along with the late Michael Maslansky and Neil Koeningsberg, now a manager and producer.

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has denied lashing out at director Michael Mann for unreasonable filming demands during the making of Miami Vice. Reports last week suggested the Ray star had blasted his director on the police remake for forcing the cast to film in dangerous hurricane conditions and prolonging the shooting schedule against the actor's wishes. But Mann's publicist Pat Kingsley insists the film-maker has been in contact with Foxx over the allegations, who vehemently denies making them. Kingsley says, "Mr. Mann has telephoned Jamie Foxx who claims the story is erroneous. Mr. Mann takes him at his word." The director will be working with Foxx again on a project beginning this summer.

Tom Cruise has parted ways with his publicist sister 20 months after giving her the job over his longtime PR Pat Kingsley. Lee Anne DeVette has dealt with her brother's romance with Katie Holmes and his controversial comments about Scientology and psychiatry during her time as his press officer. Cruise has replaced his sister with top Hollywood PR man Paul Bloch, who also serves as co-chairman for publicity powerhouse Rogers & Cowan and represents movie stars John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone, Billy Bob Thornton and David Beckham and Victoria Beckham, among others. However, DeVette will continue to work alongside her brother as the full-time caretaker of his charity work. In a statement, the movie star says, "Lee Anne has done a wonderful job on behalf of me and Cruise-Wagner Productions over the last few years, but she has always expressed a desire to oversee and expand the day-to-day activities of my charitable endeavors." DeVette adds, "I know how important Tom's charitable goals are to him, and I look forward to assisting in raising the profile of the good works that he does on behalf of children's health issues, mentoring, literacy and other social reforms."...

Brad Pitt is trying to sign up Tom Cruise's former public relations guru Pat Kingsley as he plans a press onslaught about his romance with Angelina Jolie. The movie star is reportedly keen to tell all about his private life after spending years shying away from personal matters, and he wants Kingsley to help mastermind his upcoming TV appearances and magazine interviews. A source says, "Brad's set to go public about his loving relationship with Angelina, but wants the event handled carefully and executed strategically. He knows Pat's perfect for the job." Actress Jane Fonda is in negotiations to reprise her role in a sequel to the hit 1980 movie Nine To Five. Movie bosses are impressed by Fonda's return to the big screen in Monster-in-Law - in which she battles Jennifer Lopez over her doted-upon son, played by Michael Vartan. And they are keen to sign Fonda up for a follow-up to the office comedy, in which she starred alongside Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin - because the other two leads have been ready and willing for some time. A source tells website The Scoop, "They've wanted to for years. There's been scripts, potential directors, the works, but everyone thought that for it to really work, they'd need the three leads from the original film. They've talked to Fonda and think they can make this happen. There's some discussion that it might be called Nine To Five Thirty." Fonda's spokeswoman Pat Kingsley, however, insists nothing has been agreed. She says, "There have been no serious conversations about that or any other film project at this time."...

Cruise will now be repped by his sister, Lee Anne DeVette, who works at Cruise's Paramount Pictures-based production company Cruise/Wagner. I have the greatest respect for him in all areas." Kingsley had repped Cruise since 1990, she said.

Barbarella actress Jane Fonda has blasted American gossip bible The National Enquirer for claiming she had a facelift - insisting the pictures they printed were not her. The 64-year old star is furious after a series of pictures were printed in the magazine depicting a woman with badly swollen eyes and named her as Fonda. In the accompanying story, the Enquirer alleged that fitness guru was lonely and had undergone the surgery in a desperate bid to win back her ex-husband Ted Turner and to reignite her film career. But Fonda's spokeswoman Pat Kingsley insists, "It's not Jane. Even if she wanted to have a face-lift, she wouldn't have time. Jane is not vain." In the past the They Shoot Horses Don't They? actress had spoken out against the use of plastic surgery. She said, "I'm really appalled by plastic surgery in this country. We've got to make friends with those sags and wrinkles, as they represent our lifetime experience." Kingsley could not confirm whether Fonda intended to sue The National Enquirer, who stand by their article and insist they can prove the photos are of Fonda.
