- He was born in Nairobi, Kenya but moved to the UK in 1964.
- He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2010 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to Wildlife Photography and to Conservation.
- His first encounters with wildlife were in Blaise Woods, Bristol.
- He has a daughter, Savannah (born 2006), with his present wife Marguerite Smits van Oyen. He also has three children, Alexander (born 1986), Romy (born 1989) and Greer (born 1995), from an earlier marriage.
- His uncles are Phil Shulman, Derek Shulman and Ray Shulman, who were all members of 60s r&b pop band Simon Dupree and The Big Sound and 70s progressive rock band Gentle Giant.
- He is a qualified scuba diver.
- He enjoys wildlife photography, art, and composing and arranging music.
- Grew up in Westbury-on-Trym, a suburb of Bristol.
