A priest-in-training and two skeptics walk into a bar. The wannabe priest says, “Wanna join my mission?” The two skeptics say, “Sure, why not?” as shadowy figures zoom into focus in the background. A solid joke? No. The premise of the crime procedural Evil? Yes, yes it is.
From The Good Wife and The Good Fight creators Michelle and Robert King, Evil follows a priest-in-training, a forensic psychologist, and contractor who investigate unexplained phenomena for the Catholic Church.

Writing duo Michelle and Robert King have had a long winning streak. Back in 2009, the married couple debuted their first show together, the CBS legal drama The Good Wife. Over the course of its consistently excellent 7 seasons, the show was nominated for 43 Emmy Awards and 14 Golden Globes. Rolling Stone called it 'Network TV's Last Great Drama'.
The Good Wife went on to spawn The Good Fight and Elspeth, two spin-offs also written and created by Michelle and Robert King.
But the duo wanted to stretch out beyond the confines of the courtroom, so in 2019 they hit the airwaves with something totally different: a psychological mystery series about Catholicism, faith, the supernatural, and evil.

For a long time, shows with a goofy main character were received perfectly by the audience. Easy storylines, lighthearted characters and a lot of dumb situations that seemed deeper when you had a better look at them.
So the writers Michelle King and Robert King decided to reuse the formula and create something of that sort in 2024. That’s how Elsbeth was born. The series revolves around a woman named Elsbeth Tascioni, brilliantly played by Carrie Preston. She is this typical offbeat weirdo of a person who always finds herself out of sync with other people.
The thing is she is also an astute attorney, who despite being very unconventional still managed to find a way to bring the world to justice. Because of her methods of work her colleagues always find her annoying and don’t trust her. But she still puts her heart out there every day.
However,...

CBS has renewed the freshman series Elsbeth for the 2024-2025 season.
In Deadline’s latest Renewal Status Report released on Wednesday, Co-Editor-in-Chief Nellie Andreeva projected Elsbeth would be renewed for a second season. This leaves The Equalizer, NCIS: Hawai’i, So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas pending renewal/cancellation news.
Across broadcast and streaming, Elsbeth is netting nearly 11M viewers after 35 days of viewing. That’s up 52% from CSI: Vegas’ performance in that time slot last year.

Third in a series on broadcast network series renewals. CBS will have some painful cancellation decisions to make this spring. With three new drama series, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson, on tap for next season, S.W.A.T. surprisingly uncanceled and the Australian NCIS: Sydney, originally only intended as a temporary replacement during the strike, also renewed for 2024-25, the network will have to do some slate purging to make room for the additions.
That will likely impact more than one of the remaining CBS drama series whose fate has not been determined, The Equalizer, NCIS: Hawai’i, Elsbeth, So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas, a group that includes the network’s current dramas with a female lead. It features series that would not be canceled under normal circumstances. CBS’ schedule this season has been performing well, led by new breakout hit Tracker, and all five dramas in...

Elsbeth: Pictured: Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni Photo: Michael Parmelee/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Good Wife continues to live on through a second spinoff series: Elsbeth, featuring the recurring character played by Carrie Preston on both The Good Wife and its first spinoff, The Good Fight. The new series is certainly more lighthearted than The Good Wife, playing heavily on the Elsbeth character’s quirky personality and unconventional ways of solving cases. Robert King, who — with his wife, Michelle — created both The Good Wife and Elsbeth, talked about how they were envisioning an Elsbeth series, they kept coming back to one classic character: Peter Falk’s legendary detective from Columbo. Back-to-back new episodes of the Carrie Preston-led series will air Tonight (April 4) beginning at 9/8c on CBS.

Exclusive: CBS’ Elsbeth will count on three additional guest stars for its Season 1 cast: Elizabeth Lail (Five Nights At Freddy’s), Arian Moayed (Succession) and Laura Benanti (The Gilded Age). Following a brief hiatus, the show returns April 4 with two episodes.
Elsbeth follows the titular Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston), an astute but unconventional attorney who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD following her successful career in Chicago. The character first appeared in The Good Wife and later in The Good Fight spinoff.
In addition to Preston, Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson round out the series regular cast as Captain Wagner and Kaya Blanke, respectively. Gloria Reuben recurs as Wagner’s wife, Claudia Payne. CBS audiences first met Carrie Preston’s alter ego Elsbeth Tascioni in a first-season episode of their prestige legal drama “The Good Wife.” The character would go on to appear in almost every season of that series and quickly leapfrogged to its even-better sequel “The Good Fight,” where she dropped in on three of its six years. Clearly a favorite of fans as well as series creators Robert King and Michelle King, Preston’s Elsbeth, a daffy and disorganized but utterly unassuming and brilliant lawyer, now has her own series, which debuted its premiere episode on Feb. 29 — a leap year, how fitting.

The Elsbeth premiere set the stage for what the series will be, both in terms of the cases and the ongoing mystery of what has brought the titular character (Carrie Preston) to New York: to investigate Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce) for possible corruption. Right from the start, we knew that Stephen Moyer, Preston’s True Blood costar, was playing the killer, allowing for a fun cat-and-mouse game between their characters. “That structure will continue,” co-creator Michelle King tells TV Insider. “We’re not a big fan of whodunnits in general,” adds co-creator Robert King. Instead, “it’s a, how does she figure it out?” according to Michelle. But as part of that, there will be some questions. “There’s whodunnits within how do you figure it out? There might be something that ends a little more tentatively than you thought—or not ends, but it might be in the middle like,...

Emmy nominee Annaleigh Ashford (Welcome to Chippendales) was previously announced to play Melissa. Filming is expected to get underway this spring, with Paramount+ targeting a 2025 premiere for the eight-episode season.
“Happy Face for Paramount+ jumps off from Moore’s true-life story. Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father. After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to force himself back into his daughter’s life,” reads Paramount+’s synopsis.

Every once in a while, a TV news announcement strikes right at your heart.
This one is enough to make you giddy with delight, which is odd, given the satanic overtones. But, here we are.
Paramount+ today announced that the final season of fan-favorite and critically acclaimed original series Evil will premiere this May.
With every scoop of good news comes the bad, and this is about as bad as it gets.
Four bonus episodes have been added to Evil Season 4 by the streaming service and are set to begin production soon in New York City for a thrilling series finale.
Was I the only one who had no idea Evil was on the chopping block? If we know anything after enjoying three seasons of Evil so far, it's that the devil works in mysterious ways.

[This story contains spoilers from a nearly 10-year-old episode of The Good Wife ]
On Mar. 23, 2014, The Good Wife pulled something of a TV coup. The CBS legal drama aired an episode that killed off a major character, the No. 2 actor on the call sheet, without even a whiff of the departure leaking online beforehand.
Showrunners Michelle and Robert King have since spoken many times about all the lengths to which everyone involved went to keep Josh Charles’ abrupt exit under wraps, as has Charles and many of his former castmates, but it turns out someone was eagerly blabbing about it the whole time. At least, that’s what Alan Cumming admitted during a Wednesday press event for Peacock series The Traitors.
“I am the most indiscreet person,” said Cumming. “When I was on The Good Wife and Will [Charles’ character] was murdered — remember when Will was shot? — I told everyone. I can’t understand how it didn’t get out.”

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

Déjà vécu, fake hand grenades, experimental ketamine treatments, singing Sondheim to a sunflower, levitating, a dalliance with a doctor and a flirtation with Buddhism, depression, the end of a marriage, teargas, a white supremacist terrorist attack — is there anything Diane Lockhart didn’t experience in the final season of “The Good Fight”? Perhaps, but you wouldn’t know it watching star Christine Baranski, whose performance contained multitudes and over the course of 10 episodes displayed her virtuosic range.
This breadth of material certainly made for a fitting farewell to a character the veteran actress has played for 13 seasons on “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight.” She, of course, earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for the first six seasons of the former series. But as impressive as that tally sounds, Baranski has not yet been recognized for her best years as Diane throughout the six-season run of the Paramount+ series. Since...

Elaborating on the same, she said: “One thing that I realised while filming for this show is how women who have a consistent need to be happy and only when they’re affable and sprightly, they are nice, but if they are rough on the edges and don’t sugarcoat things, only then they are tough.”

Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page features 10 standout drama series scripts in 2023 Emmy contention. It showcases the critical role writer’s work plays in a show’s success. All materials (the script and writers intro) were submitted before the WGA strike began on May 2.
When viewers of The Good Fight pressed play on the series finale aptly titled, “The End Of Everything,” they are reunited with Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), the bold and badass high-powered attorney who found herself at a crossroads throughout Season 6. The world was falling apart around her and so she fell, too.
Much like Diane who was ready to burn it all down and start fresh, so was the City of Chicago which was reeling from racial injustice and oppression when citizens took to the streets to fight for their rights. And although the series finale doesn’t provide a magical conclusion for Diane and Chicago,...

There were some high stakes for the final scene of Paramount+’s The Good Fight — itself a spinoff of CBS’ long-running The Good Wife. The pressure to close out the saga of Chicago lawyer Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) was high. “The intention was to not face-plant,” co-creator and showrunner Michelle King told THR in an April interview about the show’s series finale, in which Lockhart decides to retire. Adds her writing partner and husband, Robert King: “You’re always trying to react to where the chemistries exist in the show, and there was so much between Christine and Audra McDonald [who plays Liz Reddick]. Clearly, we thought they were the last two that needed to be on that stage.” The Kings offered a behind-the-scenes look at how they crafted the final moments — and made one really big prediction.

Showrunners Michelle and Robert King have been in the Emmy conversation for 13 consecutive years: The past six for The Good Fight, starring Christine Baranski in a role she originated on their Og legal drama, The Good Wife, which was an awards contender for each of its seven seasons.
The creative and married partners first teamed in 2006 on a police procedural called In Justice for ABC, which lasted one season. In 2009, CBS picked up Good Wife, which starred Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick, the wife of a state attorney (Chris Noth) who is forced to return to her law career after her husband becomes embroiled in a sex and political corruption scandal. It was judged an instant hit, with THR‘s review declaring, “There could not be a better choice for the title role of Alicia Florrick than Margulies. Through words spoken and unspoken, she paints a detailed, moving portrait of a woman whose largely private,...

The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

Around 900 picketers flooded the streets near Melrose supporting the WGA West’s Committee of Black Writers.
These included stars such as Samira Wiley, Gabby Sidibe, Kendrick Sampson and Robin Thede.
Precious star Sidibe told Deadline, “I am striking with the writers because if they don’t work, I can’t work”, while Orange Is The New Black star Wiley said she was on the picket line to support her writer wife, Lauren Morelli. “My house is a two union household,” she added.
Thede, creator and star of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, warned the studios to “stop being cheap”. “I’m striking because paying writers a day rate is an abomination. We are still professionals and we deserve to be paid that way,” she added.
Why I'm Striking: “Because paying writers a day wage is abomination.
