10 Iconic Dance Numbers in the Millennium ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Hindi Film Music has witnessed paradigm changes in the Millennium. Songs are now promo tools and barely situational, and lip-sync numbers predominantly dance songs. On International Dance Day (April 29), I choose the 10 truly magnificent dance numbers that will always live on. And yes, I have not included Naacho Naacho from Rrr as it was technically not a Hindi movie!
Budtameez Dil / Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ranbir Kapoor outdid himself in this song, reviving memories of his father, Rishi Kapoor’s mastery of dance! The musical was enriched immeasurably by this by Benny Dayal-Shefali Alvares song, composed by Pritam with delightfully crazy lyrics (Paan mein pudina dekha) by Amitabh Bhattacharya. And if you thought the dance had a hint of Michael Jackson, please remember that legend was its choreographer Remo D’Souza’s idol.

Mumbai, March 5 (Ians) "Raag", a film close to the heart of late Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan, is all set to hit theatres on March 26.
"During the pandemic, we lost Saroj ji. She was the backbone of our project. Right from helping us in finalising the story to choreographing to suggesting an item number for the film to casting one of her favourite students -- Heena Panchal -- for the same, Saroj ji helped us a lot. Despite all our earnest efforts the film could not be released while she was around. We are now releasing it on 26th March 2021, and it is our tribute to the noble soul," producer Piyush Mundhada said.
"It is also the first work of the late choreographer to release in theatres posthumously. Had she been there, she would have been very proud of the same," he added.
Renowned choreographer Saroj Khan passed away in July last year.

Ace-choreographer filmmaker actor Prabhudheva calls the late Saroj Khan “a legend beyond legends.”
“Her dance numbers wre not just about dancing. A whole universe of feelings and moods went into them. I don’t know if any choreographer in India was as popular as Sarojji. She was equally popular in the North and South. When Ek do teen came out kids in Chennai were copying Madhuriji’s steps,” says Prabhdheva.
Saroj Khan made Prabhudheva believe in magic. “It was just magic when Sarojji worked with Srideviji and Madhuriji. Shamefully there were only five people at Saroj Khan’s funeral on the morning of 3 June. Three of them were her children(a son and two daughters) and two were choreographers Remo d’Souza and Ahmed Khan.
Saroj Khan was to Bollywood choreography what Naushad was to film music. Before her choreographers were shadowy figures in the background .She brought a full-bodied recognition to film choreography , and also prompted Filmfare to instate an award for choreography.
Actresses specially Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit dancing to Ms Khan’s rhythms acquired a special allure.
Saroj Khan was a perfectionist in her dance moves and unsparing in her quest forthat perfection.
A very popular actress from the 1990s tells this anecdote about her experience of being choreographed by the mighty Saroj Khan.Apparently the actress couldn’t get the steps right.

Saroj called actress aside and asked, “There is no lachak(swing) in your dance steps.

In a list of top songs of Sridevi, it would be hard to miss Kaante nahin kat te. Getting her to wear a chiffon sari and a breeze adding to the drama was all a part of trying to make her look her most sensuous ever on-screen, says Mr. India producer Boney Kapoor.
Kapoor, who backed the 1987 film and is now eyeing a reboot, recounted the making of the song, which was picturized on his brother Anil and late wife Sridevi.

When you think about the choreographers in Hindi films several names come to mind and one of them of course is the great Remo D’Souza. In every dance sequence he choreographs and directs he always works to create something cool, something new and something classic. He is considered one of the best in the industry and fans cannot wait to see what he will bring to the big screen.
His next film is actually one he says he is the most excited about. We are talking about Kalank, the Abhishek Varman directed film, which is set in 1945, in pre-independent India. Kalank is the story of a vivid and ethereal world, lost when the fire of Partition engulfs the city and the country. It’s the story of the shades of reds in their lives as they yearn for hues of love while Husnabad gets soaked in the reds of violence and revenge.

The forthcoming Vidya Balan-starrer Tumhari Sulu is a fun, inspirational story of a housewife who believes that she can have a life outside the walls of her home. The trailer of the film has already received immense love and appreciation, and the film has been placed on many lists, including ours, of the most anticipated releases of the year.
Besides the fact that Vidya plays the lead role of Sulu in the film, another high moment is that the film revisits one of the most iconic Bollywood songs – a recreation of Sridevi’s hit track ‘Hawa Hawai’.
Interestingly Vidya Balan was barely 5 years old when the original ‘Hawa Hawai from Mr. India released in 1987. When Vidya came on set to shoot the song with co-stars Neha Dhupia and Rj Malishka, she couldn’t help but go back in time and revisit her memory of ‘Hawa Hawai’ when she was a little girl.

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt have stepped in the shoes of Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit for the recreated version of their superhit song Tamma Tamma Loge from their 1989 movie Thanedaar for their upcoming movie Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The two even took dancing lessons from the dancing queen Madhuri Dixit for the song. Apparently, Saroj Khan, who has originally choreographed the Tamma Tamma song, is unhappy with Varun and Alia for ignoring her for the reprise version of the song. "Maybe, they think that Masterji has become old and Madhuri Dixit hasn't. That's why they have called her," Saroj Khan told a leading daily when asked if the makers should have called her for guiding them for the reprise version. While Varun and Alia have done justice to the energetic song, Saroj Khan said, "Varun is a good dancer and I know he will be able to do it well,...

The much-anticipated song from Bajirao Mastani, Pinga, features the film’s leading ladies, Deepika Padukone (Mastani) and Priyanka Chopra (Kashibai). Now that we have seen the stunning video, it boasts, as we expected, extraordinary visuals, artistic camerawork and mesmerising choreography.
Reviving the regal era of the Peshwas, Deepika and Priyanka both donned colour-coordinated, Nauvari sarees. The three-minute song was choreographed by Remo D’Souza over 12 days, leaving Deepika and Priyanka only 10 days to rehearse! In true Sanjay Leela Bhansali style, Pinga was shot on a grand scale with over 50 background dancers. Pinga sees Priyanka and Deepika dancing gracefully in unison, depicting the bond between their characters.
Earlier, talking about the number Bhansali said, “It is a lavni composed folk song and a lot of work has gone into the sets and the picturization of the song. Both Priyanka and Deepika have worked extremely hard on the song and rehearsed long hours for it.

Almost a decade ago, we spotted two top notch actresses, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit dancing to the tunes of 'Dola Re' from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's award winning Devdas, which went down as a cult song and now the filmmaker is all set to repeat history. We will see two divas dancing together in a lavani number in his upcoming magnum opus Bajirao Mastani. While Saroj Khan had choreographed 'Dola Re', Remo D'Souza has been roped in for the ambitious song in Bajirao Mastani that will see both Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra perform. The actresses have been rehearsing for over 10 days for the song, given its challenging choreography. Talking about the song, choreographer Remo says, "Though it is essentially a lavani number, it would not be wrong to call it a mix of folk and classical dance as well. There has been excitement among Bollywood fans as Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra starring in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani will be matching thumka for thumka in the same frame.
The last time two actresses competed on the dance floor was in Slb’s own Devdas and that was 13 years ago featuring Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai.
“I choreographed it by myself. One thing I was very particular about was not taking any reference points. I would dedicate this song to Saroj Khan. She is my inspiration for anything classical,” said choreographer Remo D’Souza.
“Both are fantastic dancers so it will be difficult for me to pick and choose as to who is better,” added D’Souza.
Also starring Ranveer Singh, Bajirao Mastani will release in UK cinemas at the end of this year.
