The Duggar family is best known now for Josh Duggar’s legal troubles. Years before federal marshals arrested the former reality TV star, the Duggar family was seen as a mostly wholesome Christian family. Their TLC shows, 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, certainly tried to paint the family in a positive light. Despite the show’s best efforts, Duggar family critics spent years calling out the family’s strange behavior, noting there was something not quite right about the supersized clan. To be fair, there were plenty of odd moments during the run of both reality TV shows. We’ve collected three of the most peculiar Duggar family episodes.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Just when you thought the news of an Anchorman sequel would wash away all the talk of The Hunger Games, we’ve got more fun stuff from the movie on fire. The talented folks at the Soundworks Collection have profiled the sound team behind the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ popular novel, with director Gary Ross, Supervising Sound Editor Lon Bender, Re-recording Mixer Michael Keller, and Re-recording mixer Mike Prestwood Smith weighing in on giving sound to the landscapes of this futuristic young adult battle to the death. As a film, The Hunger Games accomplishes just as much with quiet as it does with sound and score, a delicate balance that can be credited to Bender and team. Because a good sound editor knows when to make noise and when to stay still. It’s a fascinating featurette for those who want to see behind the curtain on one of Hollywood’s hottest new films. The most interesting part of the latest Soundworks Collection featurette taking a look at the sound design of The Hunger Games is the focus on the Foley work, primarily the use of the iPad giving foley artist Catherine Harper (Drive) the ability to watch the film while they recorded sound for the arena environment. The video features comments from Supervising Sound Editor Lon Bender (Drive), Re-recording Mixer Michael Keller (Green Lantern) and Re-recording Mixer Mike Prestwood Smith (Green Lantern) and I'd be curious to hear how outdoor foley effects were recorded before the iPad. Clearly they could have mimicked the outdoor environment indoors or set up a screen or television outside to record the effects, but just in watching the video it is clear Catherine Harper is able to move more freely with the film right there in her hands as she attempts to precisely mimic the footsteps of the actors on screen.

Academic librarians, led by Harvard's, are positioning themselves as the successors to Google's scuttled vision for a massive digital library. But do they lack a coherent vision?
Not long ago a federal judge in Manhattan scuttled Google's plans to create a digital universal library (a dream kicked off when Larry Page scanned "The Google Book" years ago--his company has since scanned 15 million more). While some lamented the decision, others have cheered, and among the latter is a group of academic librarians who think that a digital universal library should be a public, rather than a private, good.
They're headed by Robert Darnton, director of the Harvard University Library, who a few months ago told Fast Company not to underestimate the project. "That goal differs from other schemes in that it would not merely coordinate digitizing projects that exist everywhere," he said at the time, "but it would also...
