- She spent a happy childhood in India, was sent away to a dreary British boarding school at about the age of 10, returned to India and later was to travel with her family throughout Asia. After her father's death, she lived again for a while in England and began a career writing mysteries and children's books. Her year of birth has been given variously as 1908, 1909 and 1911.
- Made Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1980.
- Wrote children's books under the name "Mollie Hamilton" and crime fiction as "M.M. Kaye".
