As far as short films go, the good ones are those that have just a single plot line and do not complicate things by adding other superfluous things to embellish the narrative. The new short film The Shepherd is an example of such a film. Based on the novella of the same name by Frederick Forsyth, The Shepherd is an evocative short film that rekindles our faith in miracles. The Shepherd is a Christmas story directed by Iain Softley and stars John Travolta and Steven Mackintosh. Miracles of Christmas are well known in cinema, and the heartwarming tales serve as a great reminder of the importance of not losing hope, as help might be just around the corner. Mixing the festive spirit with an important story about the brave pilots of World War 2, The Shepherd becomes a tale about sacrifice as well. All of it is done in a seamless manner,...

Rose Dugdale has the kind of life story where, if she didn’t happen to be a Marxist, it would feel tailor-made for a Hollywood film. The heiress of a millionaire English family, Dugdale was born into an easy life: finishing school, debutante balls, and a place in the rarefied halls of Oxford. But Dugdale rejected the wealth handed to her and, after an incident in which she attempted to steal 82,000 pounds worth of silverware and paintings from her parents’ estate, left England to become a member and leader in the Irish Republican Army, fighting to end British rule of Northern Ireland.
“Baltimore,” a new feature film starring Imogen Poots as Dugdale, occasionally jumps somewhat awkwardly through this woman’s path to radicalization, but the film, from writer, director, and editor duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, largely anchors itself on the nine-day sliver of time she’s most notorious for.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Death and the Serpent,” the sixth episode of the sixth season of “Vikings.”
When Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) first appeared on History’s “Vikings” she was a character ahead of her time. She fought for equality, battled alongside the men as a famous shield maiden, and never compromised herself even when it meant losing Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) to another woman.
That trailblazing portrayal was a coveted role in the pre-#MeToo era, when messy female characters with breadth and ambition were rarer and often shot with the male gaze. In turn, Lagertha helped bring female viewers to History and became so beloved with fans that creator Michael Hirst received death threats telling him not to kill off the character ahead of the show’s sixth and final season.

"It's time to wake up and smell the justice." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a lighthearted indie comedy titled Supervized, from Ireland about senior superheroes now living in a retirement home. Yes it looks as goofy and extremely cheesy as it sounds so watch out. The set of elderly superheroes include Tom Berenger as Maximum Justice, Beau Bridges as Shimmy, Fionnula Flanagan as Madera Moonlight, and Louis Gossett Jr. as Total Thunder. The full cast also includes Clive Russell, Fiona Glascott, Ned Dennehy, Elya Baskin, and John Kavanagh. The four ageing heroes come together for one last hurrah, as always happens. It reminds me a bit of Mystery Men, with a few old fogey superheroes in that film, too. This doesn't look so good, which explains why it's headed straight to VOD for release. Give it a look anyway. Here's the first official trailer for Steve Barron's Supervized,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Lost Moment,” the Dec. 19 episode of “Vikings.”
Given that the series revolves largely around issues of power struggles, raiding and war, “Vikings” has never treaded lightly in terms of killing off notable characters and actors. But as the series continues its next-generation exploration of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons in a post-Ragnar world, even the rules it previously established have been shaken up with the latest character death.
In “The Lost Moment,” new ruler Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) continued his quest to convince himself and others in Kattegat of his divinity after controversially sacrificing a young woman he presented to his followers as Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick). However, when he visited The Seer (John Kavanagh) to confirm his newfound self-appointed power status, the prophecies weren’t exactly foretold in his favor. In Secret's main selling point is its cast, the previously attached Jessica Biel and Gerard Butler having now been replaced by the altogether more compelling duo of Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar Isaac, but strong performances can't elevate it beyond the level of enjoyably ridiculous.
Olsen plays the beautiful, quietly resentful anti-heroine Thérèse, who's adopted as a child by a stern, puritanical aunt (Jessica Lange on scenery-chewing form) and forced into a suffocating, loveless marriage to her sickly cousin Camille (Tom Felton). So overwhelming is her sexual repression that when...

“Ah, you f*cking idiot,” says Travis Fimmel with a broad grin and a glint in his eye, and unfortunately it’s aimed directly at this HeyUGuys writer.
It’s almost the end of our second and final day on the set of Vikings in County Wicklow, a short distance from Dublin, and we’ve finally tracked down the enigmatic lead actor who seems to have been kept busy ever since we arrived. He’s in-between scenes and in full Viking garb – his wild beard and magnificent dreadlocked hair have him looking every inch the intimidating part – and we retreat to a quiet corner of the set to begin our interview. After a polite introduction we take a seat opposite Fimmel and begin to relax. Previously titled Therese, Charlie Stratton’s In Secret had its world debut earlier this year at Tiff, where it premiered to early praise, particularly for the film’s leading performances.
Elizabeth Olsen, Oscar Isaac, and Tom Felton star as the leading trio in the adaptation of Émile Zola’s original novel, Thérèse Raquin. And now Roadside has released the first trailer for the newly-titled film over on Apple.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman is easily one of the best films I’ve seen all year, and the only shame is that we’ve got to wait until February until it’s released in the UK.
The film has been very well received by critics since its Telluride and Toronto debuts, and has been continuing on the festival circuit in recent months – you can read our review from the Lff here – building momentum nicely in the run-up to the Oscars.
Fiennes is magnificent as Charles Dickens, and Felicity Jones is simply superb opposite him as his on-screen muse, Nelly Ternan, with whom Dickens shared a decade-long secret relationship.
With its release on our shores on the horizon, Lionsgate has launched a beautiful new quad poster, and a terrific new trailer to go along with it.

By far one of the finest films I’ve seen all year, Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman is coming in as a strong contender in this year’s wide-open awards season, and after dazzling on the festival circuit in recent months, it will soon be heading into cinemas stateside over the very busy Christmas period.
Fiennes is absolutely fantastic in the male lead as Charles Dickens, and the chemistry that he and Felicity Jones share on screen is electric, with both very much worthy of Best Actor/Actress nods come January.
The film marks Fiennes’ sophomore feature in the director’s chair, and we’ve seen little from it since the first trailer launched last month. But now Sony Classics has released a handful of great new images, teasing a look at what is arguably the best period drama of the year.

Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, Coriolanus, earned praise from audiences and critics alike, earning Fiennes a BAFTA nomination for his feature debut behind the camera. He returns this year with his anticipated sophomore film, The Invisible Woman. And with the drama coming off the back of positive early receptions on the festival circuit, about to have its UK premiere this month at the BFI London Film Festival, Sony Pictures Classics has launched the first trailer.
Fiennes takes the lead opposite Felicity Jones as Charles Dickens and his muse, Nelly Ternan.
Nelly (Felicity Jones), a happily-married mother and schoolteacher, is haunted by her past. Her memories, provoked by remorse and guilt, take us back in time to follow the story of her relationship with Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) with whom she discovered an exciting but fragile complicity.
Dickens – famous, controlling and emotionally isolated within his success – falls for Nelly, who comes from a family of actors.
