For all the great gritty and realistic television that's widely available these days, sometimes you're feeling down and find yourself in desperate need of something that's just nice to watch. "Bob's Burgers," which hit an elusive sitcom milestone when they released a feature-length movie in May of this year, is a show that is nice.
The show follows the wacky Belcher clan, a family of misfits who run their titular diner. "Bob's Burgers" avoids some common tropes for animated adult comedies with its insistent optimism and the lead family's capacity for loving each other. It's not only the quality writing and dynamite voice cast that keep people coming back to order more "Bob's Burgers" after 12 seasons. People have developed a genuine love for the characters, who maintain a love for each other and a dynamic optimism despite their constant pitfalls. The family all knows each other as the freaks and weirdos they truly are,...

Vladimir Nakobov’s 1938 novel “Laughter in the Dark” begins with its rich and horny (but happily married) hero arriving at the vision that will ultimately ruin his life. A retired art critic with cinematic aspirations, old Albinus is struck by the idea of taking a famous painter, “preferably of the Dutch School,” and animating one of his signature works into the stuff of motion pictures. Film technology was still in its infancy, and it made anything seem possible. What if someone could use it to breathe new life into a static canvas, adding new dimensions to the artist’s vision and illustrating what might have happened in the moments before and after the one that was immortalized in oil?
Albinus, to his credit, recognized the unique challenges that might be involved in such an endeavor. “It would entail a delicacy of work calling for novel improvements in the method of animation,...

Broad City is going back to the beginning in its upcoming fourth season, and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson can barely contain their excitement.
The stars of Comedy Central’s cult comedy dropped by TVLine’s Comic-Con interview suite over the weekend and were positively euphoric when discussing the series’ Aug. 23 premiere, a long-delayed, Sliding Doors-esque half-hour that turns back the clock six years to reveal how their fictional character’s met. “We wrote it as the finale of the first season, but [exec producer] Amy Poehler said, ‘Don’t do it. It’s too early,'” Glazer revealed to me.

If you were to describe The Perfect Food, it might go something like this: healthful, delicious, bigger than a morsel and filling enough to fight hunger for hours. “Foods that promote satiety”—a feeling of lasting fullness—”do exist,” insists David Katz, MD, founder of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. What makes some grub extra satisfying? “Fiber and protein can help,” says Barbara Rolls, PhD, author of The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet. Getting more bang for your bite matters, too: Low-energy-density foods, which yield big portions for few calories, “allow you to eat more without gaining weight,” Rolls says. Want some of that?...

With just one more episode to go, there is still so much about Nazir Kahn that remains a mystery.
After watching The Night Of Season 1 Episode 7, I'm now worried we may not know for certain whether Naz killed Andrea by the time this is all over.
It's not very often I'm of a mind to extend a legal case on television, but they've barely put a dent into The City of New York against Nazir Kahn or whatever it's technically called, and I have more questions than answers. Let's talk about those, as well as the effect the case is having on those involved.
First, let's touch on Stone. Does the man even have actual allergies? He slept just fine, never even waking up with an asthma attack, after kitty joined him in slumber. If someone is as allergic as Stone claims to be, and kitty was happily fluffing his...

Some thoughts on tonight's The Night Of — and on my hopes for next week's finale — coming up just as soon as this is for Law & Order... "Did I raise an animal?" -Mrs. Khan The first installment of The Night Of was among the most vivid, engrossing episodes of television I've seen in a long time. It's not that the larger story was all that new, but Price and Zaillian's attention to detail and ability to inject enormous amounts of dread into seemingly innocuous moments made it feel fresh and alive and different. The series has had no choice but to become a bit more conventional with each ensuing hour. There are still peculiarities unique to it and its characters (though Stone's eczema remains under control, the scene where he visits one of Don Taylor's former sugar mamas makes sure to dwell on the woman's manicured bare feet) and each...

Who better to poke fun at the eccentricities of daily life than a bunch of crudely-drawn cartoons? Jaggy Lines, a web series from creators Steve Gallant and Scott Spivack, uses short, static episodes to illustrate awkward moments.
Jaggy Lines features an improvisational style, and its characters barely move as they banter with one another. The series’ awkward moments can happen anywhere--from a funeral to a high school reunion to a wedding--but Gallant and Spivack seem to have a particular fondness for food, which shows up in many of their sketches. The most-watched Jaggy Lines installment takes place in a Denny’s:
In an e-mail, Gallant refers to animated TV series like Home Movies and Dr. Katz as inspirations. Both of those shows left the air before the launch of YouTube, but they would’ve done great on the Internet, where short, amusing videos are preferred. H. Jon Benjamin has achieved fame and glory because of his unique, commanding and versatile voice work, but the 49-year-old comedian doesn't necessarily think of himself as a "voice actor." In fact, he wouldn't even recommend people seek the profession out without other sources of income. Despite iconic roles — cult or otherwise — in "Dr. Katz," "Home Movies," "Wet Hot American Summer" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," to current series "Archer," "Bob's Burgers" and "Family Guy," plus a highly-anticipated reprisal in "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp," the Massachusetts native is still working toward having his own show. Benjamin co-created the animated comedy "Freak Show" with longtime friend David Cross in 2006 and landed in front of the camera for "Jon Benjamin Has a Van," but he's far from done. Benjamin came up in the comedy world with sketch actors, working with...

As I said in my review of AMC’s “Better Call Saul!” I approached the “Breaking Bad” prequel with some skepticism about whether it could work, before ultimately being pleased with the first three episodes. Two other men who had deep and long-lasting concerns about the viability of the project? That would be “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan and producer Peter Gould, who wrote the episode that introduced Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman. As the two men discuss in this interview I did at press tour, a Saul spin-off was something they had been talking about — half in jest, half not — going back to “Breaking Bad” season 3, but the actual show went through many iterations before it evolved into its current form as a light-hearted drama series dealing with a younger Saul (or Jimmy McGill, as he went by back then) trying to establish himself as a defense lawyer in Albuquerque.

Until about 10 minutes ago, there has been so much conflicting information, if not outright misinformation, about what exactly "Better Call Saul" will be: A straight "Breaking Bad" prequel? A time-bending journey that includes adventures during the reign of Heisenberg? A comedy? A drama with occasional laughs? Huell's story? AMC's press release about the full cast and basic premise and setting fill in some of the details — including that it begins six years before Saul (then known as Jimmy McGill) meets Walter White — and now co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould will hopefully bring more of the show (not due to premiere until early 2015) into sharper clarity, without actually giving too much of the fun away. The 90s will be remembered for a few things: Grunge, Michael Jordan, Bill Clinton’s extramarital hullabaloo, and perhaps the greatest generation of TV cartoons ever. Just like the 2000s had the emergence of great television dramas on HBO, Showtime, and AMC (The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad), the 1990s had the persistent excellence of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and the Disney Channel. If this seems like an exaggeration, then you probably didn’t watch the shows.
Hand-drawn animation was still the norm, and characterization took precedence over background and scenery. But even though the animation was great, these cartoons had great stories. You can have a bad TV show with good animation, but you can’t have a good TV show with uninteresting characters and narrative. This list is devoted to cartoons made specifically for kids, so no Dr. Katz, Daria, or The Simpsons.

Vulture is in the midst of its Sitcom Smackdown, a three-week contest that pits the best sitcoms of the last 30 years against each other to crown the ultimate winner. But while that bracket focuses on the greatest, most innovative modern comedies, it couldn't cover all of the series that live on in our hearts, the ones that may not fit those highfalutin parameters but which we could talk about for days. To give these other series their moments to shine, every day we’ll be pitting two like-minded comedies against each other: We’ll pick our winner, and readers will then vote for their own. Today it’s a battle of cult animation, Dr. Katz versus The Critic.Today's Contenders: Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist (1995–1999) vs. The Critic (1994–1995) By the mid-nineties, The Simpsons was a force of nature. And of the many things it did for television, one was that it...

Sterling Archer, the super spy of FX's profanely entertaining animated series "Archer," has little in common with the title character of Fox's "Bob's Burgers" aside from the fact that both are voiced by comedian H. Jon Benjamin (also of "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist" and "Home Movies"). One's a hard-drinking, completely immature but, when needed, very able undercover operative, the other's a beleaguered family man struggling to keep his small seaside town restaurant open. But the worlds of the two shows did collide a few weeks ago in the terrific opening sequence to the "Archer" season four premiere, which started with Archer, suffering from amnesia, having taken up with Linda, Tina, Gene and Louise under the name "Bob," working the grill and acting as a stepdad. When agents track him down at the restaurant (redone in the "Archer" animation style), what unfolds is a...

New York — The void you're looking at on your DVR is the sitcom landscape post-"30 Rock."
When Tina Fey's bright, bouncy, irreverent showbiz send-up aired its last episode Thursday night, a light (Kenneth's toothy grin?) went out in broadcast television.
"30 Rock" was not perfect: It sometimes spun its wheels and its writing was often too showy. But "30 Rock" was the clear sitcom heir to "Seinfeld," pushing comedy forward by fusing the relationship set-up of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" with the flashback jump-cutting of the single-camera "Arrested Development." Its snappy, joke-packed universe was both tightly controlled and capable of going anywhere – a fiction funhouse version of Fey's "Weekend Update" social satire. Oh, and it had Alec Baldwin.
With "30 Rock" leaving the air, the sitcom again finds itself at a crossroads. Though acclaimed and award-winning, "30 Rock" was never highly rated. Sitcom fans and creators alike can reasonably wonder that if...

Called, 'the vampire face-lift,' this new warrior on the anti-aging front involves injecting your own blood into lines and wrinkles. It may sound scary, but derms say, it works. Find out the lowdown from Bruce Katz, M.D. director of the Juva Skin & Laser Center in New York City. Let's face it, the plumper your skin is, the less likely you are to notice fine lines and wrinkles--skin's biggest nemesis. Well, if you're looking for a solution to turn back the clock without much invasion, Selphyl is the newest, hottest treatment on the market. "Selphyl involves drawing blood from the arm and spinning it in a centrifuge to extract the platelets," says Dr. Katz. "The platelets are them injected into your face in wrinkle-prone areas." You can use it anywhere you have lines and wrinkles--under your eyes, the neck, cheeks, etc. "It's safer than other injectibles because you're less...

Most actors consider themselves lucky to land one role on a series. H. Jon Benjamin finds himself in an even more enviable position: playing the lead on two shows simultaneously. While you might not recognize the face, odds are you know the voice. On FX's subversive spy comedy "Archer," Benjamin provides the voice of the egotistical title character, a secret agent who succeeds despite his selfishness. On Fox's animated sitcom "Bob's Burgers," Benjamin plays the family patriarch who loves running his hamburger restaurant more than anything else in the world. The two characters are notable entries in Benjamin's voiceover résumé, which includes the shiftless son on "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist" and a self-loving can of vegetables in the film "Wet Hot American Summer."Benjamin's work as a comedian led to a career in voice work, but to hear him tell it, he stumbled into both professions. "I was a little scattered.

A new, safe and minimally invasive procedure has been making waves for doing what no other treatment could do -- get rid of stubborn cellulite! There are many notable stories of how celebrities got their start in Hollywood. Charlize Theron was discovered while waiting in line at the bank. Justin Bieber rocketed to fame after posting videos on YouTube. But on the order of improbability, "Bob's Burgers" creator Loren Bouchard has them all beat.
Bouchard explains that in the early 1990s he was living in Boston, not doing that much with his life, when a chance encounter with his eighth grade science teacher changed everything. It just so happened that this teacher was Tom Snyder, the man who was in the process of creating the animated series "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist."
"I ran into him and he said 'You know, we're just getting started on these one-minute shorts for Comedy Central. Do you still draw?'," Bouchard recalls. "I wasn't even drawing at the time. I had no skill really to offer him. But I lied and said,...

Jen's skin is absolutely flawless, and at 43, that's quite an accomplishment! Find out what skin treatments Jen can't get enough of. Jennifer Aniston has already expressed her love of laser therapy to InStyle magazine, calling it her 'laser porn,' but she continued to talk about her love of the treatment and of laser peels on an appearance on Conan with Conan O'Brian. Jen says that she gets a laser peel that rips the skin right off of her face! "It’s extremely intense -- you don't realise you look like a battered burn victim for a week," she tells Conan. It gets worse! "Then [my skin] just kind of falls off -- for eight days. It was horrifying," says Jen. That sounds pretty drastic -- Jen should stick to laser therapy instead of peels. According to top NYC dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz, laser therapy is a great way to improve your...

Whether you loved or loathed Madonna's totally talked about Super Bowl performance, you have to admit that she and her skin looked stunningly ageless. But that wasn't always the case. Madonna looked tired. So how did Madonna kick 53 in the face, literally, and look as fresh as a daisy at the Super Bowl? The word among top NYC dermatologists is that Madonna's youthful look is Not the result of a traditional facelift. Instead, the superstar has undergone treatments with a Smartxide Dot CO2 laser,...

Another new web series crossed our path today, and while it's more on the humor side of the horror-comedy sub-genre, given that it tackles everyday horrors and allows viewers to approach their most acute fears with laughter, we thought it well worth sharing.
Written and directed by Tom Snyder, creator of Comedy Central’s "Dr. Katz", Explosion Bus stars comedians Jonathan Katz and Tom Leopold. It's the story of two unqualified heroes who take on the cruel host of America’s most popular TV show, a fictional version of "American Idol". In their bus with their "staff", they cross the country making talent audition house calls. The humor is dry, the dialogue is conversational, and the women are beautiful. Just like real life!
As Katie Covett, executive producer of Explosion Bus, explains it: "The horror that pervades Explosion Bus is subtle but very much present. Eb confronts everyday horrors: the...

Have You suffered from cellulite like almost all of us? Now there's a treatment that some dermatologists say really works. If people will inject chemicals into their faces to stay young, why not their legs? The hour-long treatment doesn't come cheap -- it's around $5,000 -- but it is said to produce long lasting results. Amidst the buzz, dermatologists are coming out in support of the process. Cellulaze is a two step process, explains New York based celebrity dermatologist, Dr. Bruce Katz. "Basically what we do is we thread a laser fiber under the skin that shoots in different directions and tightens the dermas, because with cellulite the skin is less firm and fat pushes up, the lasts allows us to even out the skin by shooting the laser energy in diff direction, local anesthesia, one treatment, lasts for at least about a year." Dr. Katz is involved in the Fda...

The above embedded video is more of a TV trailer than a film trailer, but it’s all hilarious. Mike Salva‘s Pound Dogs follows the minimalist adventures of dogs locked up at the local pound, desperately waiting to be adopted. To relieve the boredom, they resort to fun dog activities such as rubbing one’s butt along the floor, wearing sombreros and confessing their love of eating cat poop.
Salva has animated a 13-minute pilot episode for a potential series for Pound Dogs. The short film features the voice work of comedians Ryan Williams and Sean Parrott; cartoon voice actors Andy Merrill (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Samantha Newark (Jem); and singer/music producer/filmmaker Steve Taylor.
Pound Dogs, the full short, will be screening at the upcoming NY Television Festival on Wed., Sep. 21 at 6:15 p.m. and Fri., Sep. 23 at 9:00 p.

For every blockbuster in Hollywood there are a million more near-misses. What would "Indiana Jones" have been like starring Tom Selleck? How about "The Terminator" headlined by O.J. Simpson? Or "Dirty Dancing" with Val Kilmer?
