Mumbai, March 31 (Ians) It is election time and in this season political parties develop an extra interest in film stars. On their part, stars reciprocate. The choice is not automatic and there are factors that qualify them as probables.
Films and politics have been poles apart and the use politicians had for film stars was to present them at political rallies in order to attract crowds. While mainstream parties were yet to familiarise themselves with this process of using film stars for campaigning, it mostly happened at the local level.
In Mumbai, some party candidates were bound to know an actor or somebody who did. Politicians in other cities used cash, contacts or favours.
In the old days in Uttar Pradesh, for instance, a star was repaid by exempting his films from entertainment tax. Taxes then were not standardised as they are today. The entertainment tax, being a state subject,...

Tamil Super star Vijay, who launched his political party Tamizhaga Vetrik Kazhagam (Tvk) on February 2, 2024, has openly stated that he is aiming for the 2026 assembly elections and has no interest in the upcoming general elections.
A press statement from Vijay‘s office said that Tvk would be holding a meeting of its office bearers on Monday, February 19, at the party headquarters in Panaiyur at 9 a.m.
The party district office bearers and state office bearers will participate in the meeting in which decisions regarding 2024 general elections will be announced.
Ians earlier reported that Vijay is likely to extend a helping hand to Bjp in the general elections. However, neither Vijay nor his office bearers subscribe to the likely support his party would extend to the Bjp in the said elections.
In Tamil Nadu, two former Chief Minister‘s M. G. Ramachandran (Mgr) and J. Jayalalithaa were superstars of Tamil tinsel world.

Chennai, June 11 (Ians) Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the icon of the Dravidian movement, was one of the most respected script writers in the Tamil film industry.
This was mainly due to the real life situations in the scripts he has written with most directly resonating with the ordeals faced by ordinary workers and labourers who were always close to his heart.
The veteran Dmk leader had once in an interview said that he used to promote rationalism and equality in his movies and he shunned larger than life images of his characters.
He had said that his characters were generally people from humble backgrounds and lived a tough life. The stories written by Kalaignar generally had an impact on ordinary men and women and they loved Karunanidhi as a messiah to remove their worries and difficulties.

Chennai, Jan 31: Dmk leader M. Karunanidhi Thursday said he had proof to back his claim that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa once wrote to then chief minister M.G. Ramachandran against Kamal Haasan.

Chennai, Jan 31: The Tamil Nadu government's ban on Kamal Haasan's mega movie "Vishwaroopam" is not politically motivated, but for the fear of law and order problems that may ensue, said the actor-filmmaker's brother and partner in the film production company Raj Kamal International here.
"As far as we know, the ban is on the grounds to maintain law and order. We do not think the ban is political," Chandra Haasan told reporters here Thursday.
On Wednesday, Dmk president M. Karunanidhi wondered whether the Tamil Nadu government's ban on "Vishwaroopam" was because the actor wanted a dhoti-clad Tamilian as the prime minister.

‘Actors are being threatened to attend each and every function hosted by useless executive members of Tamil film industry, who haven’t contributed a single success to Kollywood’ says one of the leading actor with anonymity. Of course, soon as Ajith Kumar unraveled the hidden problems of actors to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi during the occasion of felicitation ceremony.

It seems that those actors with political dreams (Shared stage along with Ajith during that critical point) were completely exhausted with the whistles and claps won by the actor including Rajnikanth.
Later Bharathiraja said, “An actor or artist must be caring for his people who support and make an ordinary person as a superstar…”
