“Years back, I uncovered an esoteric text -- The Homeopathic Principle Applied to Insanity: A Proposal to Treat Lunacy by Spiritualism by Dr. James John Garth Wilkinson -- written all the way back in 1857, and I knew within my bones, my blood, that this was destined to be a story,” said Chapman. “As a lifelong acolyte of the Fox Sisters,...

Good Boy: "A bold and original thriller from up-and coming director Viljar Bøe. Sigrid thinks she’s met her perfect match with the charming and handsome Christian, but there is one catch- he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog. Trying to be open-minded, Sigrid continues the relationship but soon notices an insidious under-tone to Christian. Maybe ‘puppy play’ isn’t as innocent as it seems."

The shortest month of the year will definitely not be short of genre thrills. Arrow Video has unveiled the highlights for the month of February and there is a lot of good stuff coming up. The main focus is on the release of Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin, a documentary about the acclaimed and equally misunderstood genius of French filmmaker and provocateur Jean Rollin. A fourth batch of Rollin's films will also roll out next month. There are two other documentaries coming next month from Paul Joyce, about the American indie film scene: Robert Altman: Giggle and Give In and Made in the USA. Of particular interest to me are all the martial arts and action films coming...

As part of their release slates for the months June and July 2020 Arrow Academy will release the classic Nagisa Oshima “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence” starring David Bowie and Hideo Sekigawa’s powerful documentary “Hiroshima”
Synopsis for “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence”
David Bowie stars in Nagisa Oshima’s 1983 Palme d’Or-nominated portrait of resilience, pride, friendship and obsession among four very different men confined in the stifling jungle heat of a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Java during World War II.
In 1942, British officer Major Jack Celliers (Bowie) is captured by Japanese soldiers, and after a brutal trial sent, physically debilitated but indomitable in mind, to a Pow camp overseen by the zealous Captain Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto). Celliers’ stubbornness sees him locked in a battle of wills with the camp’s new commandant, a man obsessed with discipline and the glory of Imperial Japan who becomes unnaturally preoccupied with the young Major,...

Attending a film festival in the mid-seventies, Sam Peckinpah was once questioned about how the studios regularly bastardised his vision, his intension and more specifically, if he would ever be able to make a ''pure Peckinpah'' picture. He replied, '’I did 'Alfredo Garcia' and I did it exactly the way I wanted to. Good or bad, like it or not, that was my film.''
The overall narrative for Alfredo Garcia is neither complicated nor convoluted. Warren Oates plays Bennie, a simple pianist residing in a squalid barroom in Mexico. He is approached by two no-nonsense Americans (Robert Webber and Gig Young) who are attempting to track down Alfredo Garcia. The womanising Garcia is the man responsible for the pregnancy of Theresa (Janine Maldonado) the teenage daughter of a powerful Mexican boss El Jefe (Emilio Fernández). In a display of power, El Jefe offers...

Following the initial announcement last week, we’ve managed to get our hands on the artwork (pictured above) and full details on the BFI’s release of Ken Russell’s controversial film The Devils, and sadly it’s only half as good as we expected… First the bad news, there will be no Blu-ray release of the film.
Why? Well it seems the BFI have only managed to acquire the original British X cut of the film and not the restored and extended version that has been doing the rounds since 2004, as the the 2004 edition exists only as an Sd Digibeta, and its release would warrant a full HD restoration – which Warner’s will not stump up the cash for (be grateful they’ve at least licensed the film to the BFI seems to be what everyone is saying).
But what will be included on this 2-disc DVD release are a whole heap of extras,...

The Invisible Man Documentary. Paul Joyce‘s The Invisible Man (1996) TV Documentary is a director Stanley Kubrick retrospective and analysis of his thirteen films. Featured in The Invisible Man are numerous actors and directors, including Malcolm McDowell, Jonathan Pryce, Bryan Singer, Michael Herr, James B. Harris, Ken Adam, and Kate Sheldon.
I have not seen all thirteen of Stanley Kubrick films but the ones that come to mind are Spartacus, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Lolita, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Like all of his fans, I was saddened by his death in 1999. I want to count A.I. Artificial Intelligence as a Kubrick film since his influence is all over it but that is like calling True Romance a Quentin Tarantino film.
More on Stanley Kubrick:
Stanley Kubrick (July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999) was an American film director, writer, producer, and photographer who lived in England during most of the last four decades of his career.
