InterviewEven today, before signing up for a film, Manoj is nervous whether he will be able to live up to the director’s expectations, despite his impressive body of work.Neelima MenonInstagramOne of the most dependable actors in Malayalam cinema, Manoj K Jayan has so far done over 200 films in multiple languages. There’s hardly a genre he hasn’t experimented with or a role he hasn’t excelled in. An actor who tries to consciously reinvent himself if he feels like being stuck in a comfort zone, his screen appearances have been few and far between. This year’s first Malayalam release, Salute, with Dulquer Salmaan in the lead, a film scripted by Bobby-Sanjay and directed by Rosshan Andrrews, has received mixed reviews. But even critics have been appreciative of Manoj K Jayan’s performance in the movie as a police officer: DySP Ajith Karunakaran, the elder brother of Dulquer Salmaan’s Aravind Karunakaran.

Flix FlashbackSet in an environment of strict discipline and hostility, the film shows the possibilities in lonely souls filling the void in each other's lives.Neelima MenonIn Koodevide, the 1983 film by Padmarajan, uncomfortable questions on human bonds outside the boundaries of blood and family are raised in a poignant manner. Set in an environment of strict discipline and hostility, the film shows the possibilities in lonely souls filling the void in each other's lives, as well as finding solace and fulfilling purpose for self. But moving away from a hopeful and fulfilling narrative, the film chooses to focus on the darkness that is unleashed by patriarchal structures that seek to thwart such nourishing bonds. The film opens almost like a televised documentary series of a school, set in a hill station. The camera unhurriedly eyeing animated children in uniforms, some in stage costumes dabbing makeup, teachers running amok, readying for the annual day,...

MollywoodThe 1979 film is a perceptive commentary on how society magnifies violence, and romanticises a certain kind of masculinity by lending a sheen to the perpetrator.Aradhya KurupAshokan in a scene from ‘Peruvazhiyambalam’Everyone is obsessed with masculinity... no, with ‘fearing and saving’ masculinity. Almost 40 years ago, Padmarajan explored this theme – unfortunately through the perspectives of those who never tire of saving, protecting and violating by turn – in his Peruvazhiyambalam. We look back at the path opened by this critically acclaimed film and how it can be seen as the fitting forerunner in a series of angry-young-men films in Malayalam cinema. There is a swagger in Prabhakara Pillai’s stride, he spits paan vulgarly. Villagers stare at him with trepidation; an impotent response to a man who had been jailed for rape. He seems to be smirking inwardly at the naked fear in their eyes, and they watch helplessly as he...

MollywoodThe actor was shooting for his upcoming film ‘Mamangam’ but it is learnt that there is no cause for concern as he is doing well.Digital NativeMalayalam mega star Mammootty sustained minor injuries while shooting a fight sequence for his upcoming film Mamangam. The news was posted on Facebook by the film team recently. However, we hear that there is no cause for concern as the star is doing well. Directed by Sajeev Pillai, Mamangam is a film based on the fair that was celebrated during 850 Ad to 1755 Ad in which warriors from different parts of the Malabar region came together to wage battles to prove their courage and valour. The festival was held on the banks of the Bharathapuzha in Tirunavaya. Evidently a historical film set in a different era, sources in the know say that Mammootty would be donning four different get-ups in this film. However, the role that he is playing in the film has been kept a secret for now. Made on a budget of about Rs 50 crore, elaborate sets have been erected for the purpose of filming some important portions of the movie. Reports indicate that Mamangam will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English as well. Being made on a high budget, the filmmakers are planning to have it released across the globe. Also, it will feature some of the top league Bollywood stars in pivotal roles, say sources. It may be mentioned here that a film on the same subject was made in 1979 with the title Maamaankam. Directed and produced by Navodaya Appachan, the film had Prem Nazir, Jayan, Jose Prakash and Alummoodan in the lead roles. Mammootty is currently busy with a slew of projects which are in various stages of production. His upcoming releases this year would be Parole, Uncle, Peranbu and Abrahaminte Santhathikal apart from Mamangam. Mammootty has another historical, Kunjali Marakkar, lined up and its shooting is expected to commence in mid 2018. (Content provided by Digital Native)...
