When ABC’s “The View” premiered in the summer of 1997, it was introduced by creator Barbara Walters as a talk show focused on “women of different generations, backgrounds, and views.” To that end, the meticulously curated inaugural panel of hosts consisted of five loquacious ladies (aged 22-67) who brought an abundance of life experience to the table. Over 27 seasons, the ever-popular show has gone through 24 full-time hosts whose tenures have lasted an average of five years. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to learn more about the fascinating careers of these lively presenters.

Legendary journalist Barbara Walters came up with a novel idea in the late 1990s: to create a talk show consisting of a panel of different women from different backgrounds to discuss the stories of the day. It eventually became The View, which launched on ABC in August 1997. But although she was the mastermind behind The View‘s creation, Walters was reportedly unceremoniously showed the door, just as several co-hosts have experienced over the years.

Hosts of “The View” past and present came together to honor and remember the show’s creator Barbara Walters on Tuesday, kicking off the new year of shows. But, Rosie O’Donnell was missing from that group, and on Tuesday afternoon, she explained why.
Walters died at the age of 93 on Dec. 30, prompting an outpouring of love and memories for the journalist. She created “The View” back in 1997, explaining in its original opening credits that she’d always wanted to do “a show with women of different generations, backgrounds and views.” Walters served as a co-host on the show until 2014, making Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar the only current hosts to have worked with her on the show.
But, as former hosts like Meredith Viera, Star Jones and Sherri Shepherd appeared in person, via phone and via Zoom during Tuesday’s episode-long tribute, some fans couldn’t help but wonder why O’Donnell wasn’t among them.

Clearing the air. Rosie O’Donnell is opening up about the real reason she wasn’t in attendance at “The View”‘s emotional tribute to Barbara Walters on Tuesday.
While O’Donnell’s reps previously told some outlets that her absence was due to a scheduling conflict, O’Donnell took to Instagram to explain that there was also a more personal reason she wasn’t able to be there.
“They invited me but I wasn’t able to make it,” O’Donnell said in a video she shared Tuesday evening. “And I didn’t want to be in a big group of people.”
“I don’t know, I was worried I would get upset and I didn’t want to do that. So, there you go,” she added.

A parade of View veterans — including current and onetime Og table mates Joy Behar, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Debbie Matenopoulos — paid their respects to the series’ late creator, Barbara Walters, during Tuesday’s special episode. Conspicuously missing from the hour-long tribute: former co-cost Rosie O’Donnell.
According to O’Donnell’s spokesperson, the actress-comedian was invited to take part in Tuesday’s retrospective. However, “She is on a plane and couldn’t change her schedule,” the rep explained. A View spokesperson confirms that an invitation was indeed extended to O’Donnell.

Hosts of “The View” past and present remembered the show’s creator Barbara Walters on Tuesday, sharing beloved memories of the journalist. But it was a story from former host Sherri Shepherd that stood out, as she recalled one time when Walters criticized her taste in men — and joked that she needed to be a lesbian instead.
As Shepherd explained, she and Walters would often have dinner outside the show, and — as she was prone to do with her co-hosts — Walters would offer advice. She and Shepherd were particularly close, with Shepherd noting that Walters actually planned her bridal shower. And at that shower, Walters was honest about her thoughts on Shepherd’s taste in men.
“She said, ‘You always get with these men who take your money! All the time! Stop getting married to men that take your money. You need to be a lesbian,'” Shepherd recalled. “‘But with your luck,...

The View‘s original co-hosts Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos and Joy Behar were among those paying tribute today to the late TV groundbreaker and icon Barbara Walters, as the show’s current panel was joined, either live or by remote, by a succession of former panelists.
“She is the reason we’re all sitting here today,” said current moderator Whoopi Goldberg at the top of today’s episode, adding that the pioneering Walters was respected by the TV industry in part because “she did not allow them to not respect her.”
“We knew her better than anyone I think,” said Behar, the sole original co-host who remains with the ABC show. “She was the original role model for everybody else”
Along with the expected accolades for Walters as a TV icon, the View creator was affectionately remembered as an unrivaled behind-the-scenes teller of tales, lover of dirty jokes and holiday-time “re-gifter.

On December 30, 2022, legendary journalist and interviewer Barbara Walters died at the age of 93. She changed the landscape for women in the industry, became the highest-paid TV journalist, and took her "women's interest" stories on "The Today Show" and turned it into a co-hosting position — a first for a woman. She also became the first female co-anchor of "ABC Evening News." Later on, in 1997, Walters created, produced, and served as a co-host for the ABC talk show "The View," which gave voices to women from different walks of life and different generations. Now that show will honor its founder with a dedicated special, according to a post from the Instagram account for "The View."

Barbara Walters, the legendary Emmy-award winning broadcast journalism pioneer and co-creator of “The View”, has died. She was 93 years old.
ABC News confirmed the news on Friday. No cause of death was given. Disney CEO Bob Iger tweeted that Walters died on Friday evening at her home in New York.
Throughout her more than 50-year career, Walter became a staple in broadcasting, helming the “Today” show ABC News, “20/20”, “The View”, and her annual “Most Fascinating People” special, while simultaneously paving the way for other female journalists.
Making a name in an industry dominated by men became an unspoken routine for Walters who began working for “20/20” in 1978. Joining the news magazine reunited Walters with her former “Today” co-host, Hugh Downs, and solidified what became her legacy.

The View is honoring its creator Barbara Walters. While the legendary journalist retired in 2014, fellow star Whoopi Goldberg couldn't help but give Walters a special on-air shoutout this week. "To the one and only Barbara Walters who had a birthday yesterday," Goldberg said on the Sept. 26 episode of The View. "We want to say 27 never looked so good." Walters, who put together the original panel of women—Debbie Matenopoulos, Star Jones, Joy Behar, and Meredith Vieira—in 1997, served as a host until her retirement. Throughout the years there have been numerous line-up changes, but Barbara remained a panelist on the show for all seventeen...

After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recommended that U.S. Olympic athletes not discuss their political opinions while they are in China for the games, the ladies of “The View” reacted on Friday, with Ana Navarro saying the request was “un-American.”
“I don’t like this at all. I don’t like her having said that at all,” Navarro said after the clip of Pelosi’s speech was played.
“That’s so un-American,” she continued. “What China has done to the Uyghurs is something that should be protested and if there’s any athlete who wants to have the courage to do that — and I understand this is about athleticism, but it’s also a huge worldwide platform.”
Navarro said she was “angry” at the International Olympic Committee for the decisions they’ve made over where to host the Olympics.

As previously announced, “The View” is celebrating 25 years of intractable morning arguments between friends by inviting back former co-hosts to sit at the table, and three heavy hitters have just been announced for February, TheWrap has confirmed.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Meredith Vieira will be returning to the show years after leaving. They’ll be joined by Star Jones, who has already shown up to guest this season starting last September. They will each co-host next month, with Jones’ appearance set for Feb. 4.
Jones and Vieira were two of the show’s original hosts, sticking with the show from its launch in 1997 until both exited after the 9th season in 2006. Hasselbeck joined the show in Season 7 in 2003, and stuck around until 2013. She’s one of two successful attempts at having a long-running conservative co-host for the show, the other being Megan McCain, who quit last year.

Star Jones, who will become the host and judge on Divorce Court later this year, has another new gig: A presidential appointment to a U.S. commission.
President Joe Biden tapped Jones to serve as one of the members of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, an agency which is tasked with identifying and reporting monuments, historic buildings and cemeteries in Eastern and Central Europe “that are associated with the heritage of U.S. citizens,” according to the law that created it in 1985.
Jones, a former homicide prosecutor, was one of the original co-hosts of The View. She’s a principal of Instant Impact Group, LLC, which advises on diversity and equity programs. He continued, “Beginning next season, Star Jones will bring her life experiences, her knowledge as a litigator, and her forceful personality to that storied bench. She aspires to make the show more meaningful, more interactive, and more impactful for the couples and we can’t wait.”

In the 25-year history of “The View,” Meghan McCain is one of the only co-hosts to leave on her own — without being fired.
McCain’s decision to quit the most-watched show on daytime TV wasn’t one that came easily for her. Her four years on “The View” were marked by ratings peaks in ABC daytime, as she succeeded at the Hot Topics table where other conservatives — who weren’t Elisabeth Hasselbeck — had failed.
But it was also a devastating time in her personal life. Her father, Sen. John McCain, who had encouraged Meghan to take the job at “The View” in October 2017, died of glioblastoma in August 2018. The country was consumed by Trump. Backstage at “The View,” Meghan felt like she couldn’t say or do anything without someone on the show leaking stories about her being “cold” or “difficult” to the tabloids. Whoopi Goldberg will remain with “The View” for at least four more years, TheWrap has learned.
The daytime series’ longtime host has signed a new four-year contract that will take her through its 28th season and the summer of 2025, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal. Financial details of the new contract are not known.
ABC declined to comment.
Goldberg just began her 15th season earlier this month. Her new contract comes as the ABC show has had numerous shuffles in front of the camera over the past few years. Meghan McCain was the most recent co-host to depart the show, which she did in August after four seasons. Sara Haines is in her second season after returning to “The View” last September to replace Abby Huntsman.
“The View” is currently filling McCain’s slot with a rotating cast of guest conservative co-hosts, which began with former Utah Congresswoman Mia Love.

The chair being vacated on The View at the end of the month has an intriguing new name being thrown into the mix – former co-host Debbie Matenopoulos.
She was an original cast member on the show, joining it in 1997 at age 21, when she was fresh out of college. She was joined by Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Joy Behar.
As Meghan McCain takes her leave from The View at the end of the month, rumors have swirled as to who might be a candidate to fill the seat. The Daily Mail reported today that Mantenopoulos reps have been in talks with ABC News about a potential return, though no source for the information was named.
An ABC source told DailyMail.com, “Next year is our 25th season, and we’re considering Debbie Matenopoulos making a triumphant return to The View.”

Just when you thought the four judges on “The Masked Singer” couldn’t say anything dumber, Jenny McCarthy opened her mouth on the quarter-final on February 13. She thought that the Rabbit was her husband Donnie Wahlberg. Sure, Jenny – Donnie kept it secret from you that he was flying back and forth from the “Blue Bloods” location in New York to appear on this show in Los Angeles.
Over the first six episodes, Jenny had made some pretty wild guesses. But this one was the “winner” in our eyes. Her three fellow panelists –actor Ken Jeong, singer Nicole Scherzinger and singer/songwriter Robin Thicke — have been equally obtuse at times. Ken couldn’t figure out that his one-time co-star Margaret Cho was hidden inside the Poodle costume. Robin insisted that boxer Sugar Ray Leonard just had to be someone, anyone, on the show. And Nicole was certain that the Alien, who...

Admit it. One of the main reasons you watch “The Masked Singer” is to feel smarter than the panel. The four judges — Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke — sure say some pretty bone-headed things when they are trying to guess the names of the famous faces hidden behind those elaborate masks.
Two of them – Jenny and Robin — took to the stage at the Television Critics Association winter tour to defend themselves. Jenny got in the first jab. “We weren’t sitting there able to Google.” But what about between shows? Robin insists, “I never Googled.” And his wild speculation certainly confirms that as he thought the likes of the hugely successful Judge Judy would compete on “The Masked Singer.”
Why was Robin willing to look so dumb to viewers, who are convinced they are as right as he is wrong. “I really wanted it to be pure.

One day after Susan Lucci revealed she underwent emergency heart surgery, the soap star stepped out at the American Heart Association’s 15th annual Go Red for Women Red Dress Collection runway event.
Moments before she took a tumble on the runway (and expertly recovered), Lucci spoke to Variety about why she decided to come forward and open up about her health scare.
“I knew how lucky I was, and I just wanted to pay that forward,” Lucci said.
The small screen legend says she watched an interview awhile ago where a woman talked about having a heart attack, explaining that she felt like an elephant was pressing against her chest. When Lucci experienced the same symptoms, she recalled watching that interview and knew something was wrong.
“It made me take my symptoms seriously. I was very lucky. I wound up going to the emergency room and having a 90% blockage in my main artery,...
