“Bad Faith: Christian Nationalism’s Unholy War on Democracy” is the scariest film I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a documentary that explores the rise of Christian Nationalism, and much of what it shows you, about the mutation of the Christian Right into a movement that’s openly abandoned any loyalty to democracy, has been covered in the mass media in recent years. But the film’s directors, Stephen Ujlaki and Chris Jones, go deep into the roots of this movement, and what’s new and disquieting is how the current presidential race changes everything. Viewed against the looming possibility of Donald Trump’s re-election (a scenario that most liberals I know believe is unlikely; I think they may be seriously deluded), the rise of Christian Nationalism takes on a whole new meaning.

The nerve-wracking documentary “War Game” follows a 6-hour Situation Room re-creation of events of Jan. 6, 2021, albeit on a larger, more distressing scale. In the process, the film lays bare numerous weaknesses in America’s political infrastructure, but its most revealing subjects might not be who you think.
Directors Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss strip their opening scenes of context, as they follow two former U.S. soldiers in Washington, D.C. Dressed in tactical gear, they survey the U.S. Capitol and avoid the watchful eyes of police while discussing where they might attack. The conversation is concerning, but it’s soon revealed that these men — Chris Jones of the Marine Corps and Kris Goldsmith of the U.S. Army — are merely tacticians in a roleplaying game. However, once the full scope of their experiment fades into view, “War Game” becomes perturbing all over again.

Reba McEntire helped get Super Bowl Lviii between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers underway with her rendition of the national anthem at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
McEntire’s emotive, affecting rendition lit up the crowd and moved some of the football players — including the Chiefs’ defensive tackle Chris Jones — on the field to tears. As her voice reached a crescendo with “the rockets red glare” lyric, fireworks lit up the circumference of the top of the stadium and the rousing rendition was punctuated by fighter jets doing a fly-by above.

Jesse Moss and Tony Gerber’s War Game documents a nifty six-hour exercise in roleplay, commencing on the anniversary of the January 6 United States Capitol attack. Put on by the Vet Voice Foundation in 2023, this bit of roleplay included U.S. officials in both defense and intelligence acting out their response to a fabricated but feasible coup attempt supported by the active military. It’s a stark, scary scenario succinctly laid out by Moss and Gerber, with aide from Janessa Goldbeck, CEO of Vet Voice. The results of the planned practice aren’t very reassuring.
Steve Bullock (former governor of Montana) plays “the President” here, informed by his team of a developing situation wherein a potential organized revolt is activating all across the nation. Each side is represented in the action, with veterans Kristofer Goldsmith and Chris Jones playing leaders of the fictional “Order of Columbus,” an extremist group leading the treasonous mission.

"War Game" isn't what one might consider a typical horror movie, but thanks to its subject matter, it's one of the scariest films you're likely to see in 2024.
Two years after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, a collection of current and former U.S. intelligence agents, Army veterans, defense specialists, senators, and high-ranking advisors meet near the U.S. Capitol to participate in a secret national security exercise overseen by a non-partisan veterans organization called Vet Voice. With concerns running high that the next real-life insurrection could involve members of the active duty military, this unscripted exercise was concocted to see how the federal government might respond to a contested presidential election in 2024, and another attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power on January 6, 2025. This time, the loser of the presidential race openly calls for rebellion by encouraging military members to ignore orders from the President and take up arms against their countrymen.

A storyboard artist on Young Justice's fourth season, Christopher Jones spoke with The Direct about the show's detailed future canon, which does exist despite the series' uncertain future.
Young Justice fans know that much of the show is mapped out, with creators confirming that they know what they would want for a season five — and six and seven, at that. Production for any of that, however, has not been green-lit.
Insider reports indicated that prospects for a potential fifth season of the DC animated show seem bleak, and Jones shared that following the last issue of his tie-in comic Young Justice: Targets, there was no official word yet.

Under the non de plume John Le Carre, David Cornwall penned a series of best-selling spy novels including “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” ‘The Little Drummer Girl’’ and “The Russia House,” that are cerebral, unadorned, gritty. The antitheist of Ian Fleming’s suave James Bond. In fact, his most popular character George Smiley just blended into the crowd: “Obscurity was his nature, as well as his profession,” Cornwall described him in “A Murder of Quality.” “The byways of espionage are not populated by the brash and colorful adventure of fiction. A man who, like Smiley, had lived and worked for years among his country’s enemies learns only one prayer; that he may never, never be noticed. Assimilation is his highest aim.”

Pretty much the first thing Dan Slott says in our interview is, “I got to write Doctor Who fanfic and got paid for it!”
It’s a feeling that permeates not only our interview but the book Slott is here to talk about, a whopping 66-page special for Titan Comics called Once Upon A Time Lord. Slott seems like a kid who has been locked in the candy store by mistake and intends to scarf down as much candy as he can before someone notices.
But there has been no mistake—Dan Slott is one of the most respected and prolific comic writers working right now, with runs on the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, and, most famously, Spider-Man behind him. Indeed, Slott’s runs include the epic “Spider-Verse” comic event that inspired the wildly successful ongoing movie trilogy.

Maggie Thrett, the actress and singer who most memorably played Ruth in the “Mudd’s Women” episode of the original Star Trek, has died her family announced. She was 76.
“Mudd’s Women” is one of the most memorable episodes of the 1960s Star Trek, in no small part because it featured three stunningly beautiful women who seem to have strange powers over the male members of the Enterprise crew — except Spock, of course.

New Delhi, Aug 15 (Ians) Elon Musk has announced that his electric car company Tesla surpassed the milestone of producing 3 million vehicles.
Tesla cars have so far achieved over 40 million miles and the company expects to reach 100 million miles at the end of this year.
“Congrats Giga Shanghai on making the millionth car! Total Teslas made now over 3 mn,” Musk tweeted late on Sunday.
Earlier this month, Musk hinted that Tesla would probably build “at least 10 or 12 gigafactories” in years to come.
Musk said that the long-awaited Cybertruck (announced in 2019) will also be unveiled soon, though he did not give further details.
Tesla reported 16.93 billion in revenue in Q2 and automotive made 14.6 billion of the total sales.
In an earnings call, Musk said that Tesla’s new factory outside of Berlin crossed 1,000 cars per week in June.
Tesla was the third biggest automaker in mainland China in the first half of this year.

A pair of fugitives were arrested in Madrid four days after being featured on Fox’s “America’s Most Wanted” reboot.
Alison Gracey and Christopher Jones were on the run for nearly 10 years after they were implicated in the boating death of 36-year-old Aimee Rhoads in 2011. Gracey and Jones, both British citizens, ran a scuba excursion company off the coast of Key Largo, Fla., and according to authorities, were repeatedly informed of major safety problems with the boat that capsized while carrying Rhoads and five other passengers.
Gracey and Jones were featured on “America’s Most Wanted” in a segment that featured a simulator estimating what the couple might look like in present day. Watch the clip above.
A representative for “America’s Most Wanted” was unable to confirm whether or not a tip came through the show’s tip line, as the investigation in Madrid is ongoing.

Aip toppers were floored by the unexpectedly positive reviews this lightning-in-a-bottle satire garnered in the volatile political world of 1968. The right movie at the right moment, it captured the mood of a country in crisis and propelled star Christopher Jones into a short-lived mainstream career that included a starring role in David Lean’s “Ryan’s Daughter”.

I know some fans out there have been loving this, and I feel a little bad not being quite so gushing in my praise as they have been. This has been a reasonably good book, but not much more. I have enjoyed the novelty of seeing The Seventh Doctor get his turn in the comic book spotlight, but he doesn’t seem to dominate the book like his other incarnations do. Cartmel’s a good writer, so the assumption has to be the character lacks a certain something.
The story itself has been perfectly fine, a almost by numbers sci-fi tale that has gone down an avenue that surprised me a little, in a good way of course. We’ve had some time travel in there, some ‘the bad aliens are actually the good aliens’, a touch of...

As far as rehabilitations of characters go, last issue was a pretty good one for The Seventh Doctor. The Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker incarnations were probably the lowest ebb for The Doctor, and personally I have little love for either of them, but last issue proved to a point there is no such thing as bad characters, just bad writing. Good writing creates good characters, and last issue was definitely some good writing. We had a lot of things to digest last issue, including the flashing back and forwards in time between 1967 and 2029, the prominent role of the fan-popular Intrusion Countermeasures Group, and the fact the Captain Gilmore has not aged a day since 1967 after being discovered in 2029 in a spaceship. Think that’s everything….oh yes, and he also has an alien creature attached to his spine.

Now I’m willing to bet that among the many incarnations of The Doctor, the Sylvester McCoy Seventh Doctor is not up there as one of your favourites. Personally, I never really took to him. Too goofy for me, achingly intent to show us just how zany he was. For me, he also lacked a good look, looking like something of a mish mash of previous Doctor’s. However, that was then and this is now. Now I’m of the mind that there is no such thing as a bad character, just a bad approach, or an approach that was not quite right. So, if you are sceptical like me, let’s give the book a shot. I can sweeten the pot as well, by pointing out that The Seventh Doctor’s original Script Editor Andrew Cartmel...

Tis’ the season to write Top Ten lists, as you all well know. Don’t roll your eyes, you know you expect it. I am nothing if not a slave to fashion. I have picked out my personal favourite ten titles of the many books I have read and reviewed this year. You may well disagree but, hey, it’s my list. Enjoy.
10. Tekken (Cavan Scott / Andie Tong)
Tekken was one of those books that didn’t put on any airs and graces, and just delivered to its core audience exactly what they wanted. Action, fighting, action, and, er , fighting. To be fair Cavan Scott tried to get a little emotional depth in, but Andie Tong’s visuals and plenty of action delivered what the fans wanted.
9. Assassins Creed Uprising (Alex Paknadel & Dan Watters / Jose Holder)

Robert Mitchum ca. late 1940s. Robert Mitchum movies 'The Yakuza,' 'Ryan's Daughter' on TCM Today, Aug. 12, '15, Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” series is highlighting the career of Robert Mitchum. Two of the films being shown this evening are The Yakuza and Ryan's Daughter. The former is one of the disappointingly few TCM premieres this month. (See TCM's Robert Mitchum movie schedule further below.) Despite his film noir background, Robert Mitchum was a somewhat unusual choice to star in The Yakuza (1975), a crime thriller set in the Japanese underworld. Ryan's Daughter or no, Mitchum hadn't been a box office draw in quite some time; in the mid-'70s, one would have expected a Warner Bros. release directed by Sydney Pollack – who had recently handled the likes of Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, and Robert Redford – to star someone like Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman.

Actor Christopher Jones has died at age 72. Once touted as the heir to James Dean, Jones boasted a handsome face and the same type of brooding intensity that had made legends of Dean and Brando. Jones got his first big break in the 1960s Western TV series The Legend of Jesse James but the show lasted only one season. After appearances on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Judd for the Defense, Jones graduated to feature films. He starred in the little-seen 1967 drama Chubasco (click here for review), the hit 1968 Roger Corman production of Wild in the Streets (in which he played a rock star who becomes President of the United States), Three in the Attic and the spy thriller The Looking Glass War. His most high profile role was as a British army officer who falls in a forbidden love affair with an Irish girl in David Lean's 1970 film Ryan's Daughter.

‘Ryan’s Daughter’ actor Christopher Jones dead at 72: Quit acting following nervous breakdown after Sharon Tate murder, in later years turned down Quentin Tarantino movie offer Christopher Jones, who had a key role in David Lean’s 1970 romantic epic Ryan’s Daughter, died of complications from gallbladder cancer last Friday, January 31, 2014, at Los Alamitos Medical Center, approximately 35 km southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Christopher Jones (born William Franklin Jones on August 18, 1941, in Jackson, Tennessee) was 72. After growing up in a children’s home, joining the army at 16 and then going Awol, being handpicked by Tennessee Williams for a small role in the playwright’s The Night of the Iguana in 1961, and starring in the television series The Legend of Jesse James (1965-1966), Christopher Jones began getting film roles. His first was the title role in Allen H. Miner’s 1967 clash-of-generations drama Chubasco, in which Jones plays a misunderstood youth...

This is kinda-sorta embarrassing for me to admit, but the death of actor Christopher Jones at age 72 last Friday slipped right under my radar. Maybe it was because his passing was overshadowed by the weekend deaths of Maximilian Schell and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Or maybe his demise simply didn't get much publicity because, unfortunately, it had been a long time since many people gave much thought to what Jones did while he was alive. For the benefit of those who tuned in late: Jones was one of several broodingly handsome hunks who were hyped as likely heirs to the late James Dean during the two decades or so following that legendary screen icon's death at age 24 in a 1955 auto crash. After attracting attention in "The Legend of Jesse James," a 1965-66 TV Western, the Tennessee-born Jones graduated to motion pictures with starring roles in "Chubasco" (1967), opposite Susan Strasberg (to whom...

His star burned briefly but bright. Christopher Jones was a counterculture cult hero in the James Dean mold, starring in Wild In The Streets (1968) as Max Frost, the 22-year old rock star millionaire president of the United States who locks up everyone over 30. The same year he played Paxton Quigley in Three In The Attic, a hit about free love in the swinging sixties costarring Yvette Mimieux and Judy Pace. The big studios took notice and David Lean cast him as the romantic lead in the big-budget drama Ryan’S Daughter (1970). It was on the set of this epic that Jones reportedly suffered a nervous breakdown. His part had to be dubbed and he suddenly dropped out of show biz after only a handful of credits. Quentin Tarantino approached him in 1996 and offered him the role of Zed in Pulp Fiction, but Jones turned him down (Zed would be played...

Hollywood director and screenwriter who won an Oscar for Dog Day Afternoon
In Sunset Boulevard, William Holden's character remarks: "Audiences don't know somebody sits down and writes a picture. They think the actors make it up as they go along." Given the difficulties in quantifying their contributions, screenwriters seldom get the recognition they deserve. Frank Pierson, who has died aged 87, wrote the screenplays for 10 films but his reputation rests on Cat Ballou (1965), Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Dog Day Afternoon (1975), all of which gained him Academy Award nominations, with the last of them winning the Oscar for best original screenplay.
Yet most of the plaudits for Dog Day Afternoon went to Sidney Lumet, the director, and Al Pacino, the star. Pierson, whose work had as much to do with structure and character as dialogue, shaped the script from a Life magazine article about a bungled bank robbery that took place...

With the success of the big screen adaptation of John Le Carre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, it's ironic that the DVD of the 1970 film version of The Looking Glass War has been allowed to go out of print. Granted, the film was not well-received at the time, but writer Kimberly Lindbergs posts a defense of the production on the Movie Morlocks web site. The movie starred Christopher Jones, Susan George and young Anthony Hopkins. Click here to read...

Salli in Ski Party
by Tom Lisanti
I interviewed former 60s starlet Salli Sachse about 12 years ago for my first book Fantasy Femmes of Sixties Cinema. Her name may not be familiar, but to fans of American International Pictures’ series of beach movies her face is easily recognizable. With her waist-long honey brown hair and adorable smile, Salli, literally plucked off the beach in San Diego, appeared in almost every beach party film beginning with Muscle Beach Party (1964) through The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966) and everything else in between including Bikini Beach (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) and Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965).
Recalling her time with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, Salli remarked, "Frankie and Annette were very easy going and a pleasure to work with but they weren’t real beach people. Frankie was raised in Philadelphia so I don’t think he ever saw a surfboard in his life!

Many consider the original to be perfect, but “Ryan’s Daughter” star Sarah Miles has set out to pen a sequel to the classic Irish film. Miles’ agent announced that the English actress, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the unforgettable Rosy Ryan in the award-winning film, is currently conducting research in Ireland for the sequel. “She is writing a script and there is a producer for a film, but it's very early days,” her agent said. Miles’ husband, Robert Bolt, who penned “Doctor Zhivago” and “A Man for All Seasons,” wrote the original script, while David Lean, the famous director of “Lawrence of Arabia” and “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” directed. “Ryan’s Daughter” bombed in box offices when it was released in 1970, but has since become a beloved, classic Irish film, and is considered to be one of Lean’s best works.
