- Originally a big band vocalist under her original name Betty Bonney. Sang with the orchestras of Manny Prager, Les Brown (1941-42), Jan Savitt (1943), Jerry Wald (1943) and Frankie Carle (1944). Subsequently made several recordings for the Victor label and appeared as part of a stage show at the Copacabana in 1948. She changed her professional name to Judy Johnson in 1950.
- Already by the age of eleven, she sang in her own fifteen-minute program on Newport News, Virginia, radio station WGH.
- In 1949, she sang and danced on Broadway in the musical "High Button Shoes", also going on tour with the production.
- Toured the nightclub circuit in 1953 with a backing male group as 'Judy and Her Dates'.
