Director Richard Linklater rues that Hollywood has taken to creating sexless characters and superheroes without genitalia.
The writer/director of films including the Before trilogy and Boyhood is behind Netflix’s Hit Man, one of the standout successes at last year’s Venice Film Festival. Linklater calls the movie, starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, a “sexy crime thriller meets screwball comedy” and says the plot hinges on Arjanoa’s character Maddy being “the one he will risk everything for, just to sleep with her.”
Linklater told The Times of London: “Sex and violence is what cinema is great at. Sex was always the great seller; I don’t know why they backed off from that. Hollywood started feeding this new generation characters that were sexless. Superheroes don’t have sex. They don’t have genitalia, frankly.”

Plot: A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits. When the usual undercover guy is suspended, he’s enlisted to pose as a hitman. He turns out to be a natural at undercover work, with the police using him to entrap people taking out contracts. Things get complicated when he falls for an abused wife (Adria Arjona) wanting to take out her husband.
Review: Richard Linklater’s Hit Man is the movie where Glen Powell finally becomes a legit star. Granted, there was little to no doubt remaining in anyone’s head after his breakout turn in Top Gun: Maverick, but in Hit Man, his charisma is so white hot and old-school in that true movie star way that he should rocket to the top of everyone’s young leading man list. Fake identities, false pretenses, and romance under potentially deadly (and illegal) circumstances, Netflix's upcoming release is going to be a good one, and it's already got the ratings to prove it.
Inspired by the true story of a real, fake hitman
Adapted from an unbelievable true story, this action-comedy chronicles the chaotic undercover life of Gary Johnson, a soft-spoken, geeky professor who takes on multiple hitman identities to help the police catch those who try to hire him. Glen Powell brings the character and his many alter egos to life in a hilarious and entertaining way, leading the story as the unassuming undercover hero until he meets his match.
They say you should never mix your business and personal lives, and the two become uncontrollably blurred when Johnson begins to fall for Adria Arjona's character, who seeks his fake services in Hit Man.

When actor Glen Powell learned about the real-life Gary Johnson, who inspired the Netflix film “Hit Man,” he thought, “This is a really compelling character. There’s a lot to unpack here.” And when considering who might direct it, “There’s nobody better [than Richard Linklater] with character or story and somebody who can add authenticity. When you look at a guy that’s as complicated as Gary Johnson, I think there’s very few filmmakers that can ground somebody who contains so many multitudes.” Powell talked with actress Rachel Brosnahan about the film during a Q&a following a special April 17 screening of the film in New York City. The film will be released in theaters on May 24, followed by its Netflix premiere on June 7.

Glen Powell fooled Richard Linklater with his crazy 'Hit Man' personas. The 35-year-old actor stars in the movie as Gary Johnson – an undercover police officer who adopts various alter egos as a fake assassin – and he delved so deeply into some of the characters that he got the director confused.Speaking at a screening of the Netflix movie in New York City on Wednesday (17.04.24), Glen said: "My favourite part was, I was on set one day, when I was playing Tanner, the redneck guy with the missing back teeth, such a fun character."I was talking to Rick, and Rick literally interrupted the conversation, and he goes, 'Where's Glen?' and I go, 'I'm Glen! I'm Glen, man, let's do this.'"I would come out in character. I'm not like a Method guy, but on those days – I promise, I don't take myself that seriously – I would come out,...

Glen Powell and Richard Linklater may be long-time collaborators and friends — and now, with the imminent release of their “Hit Man,” credited co-writers — but these two can still surprise each other.
Case in point: for the fact-based and very fun “Hit Man,” Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a seemingly regular dude who ends up moonlighting for the New Orleans Police Department as a fake assassin, tasked with snagging people who are attempting to employ a hitman to off certain people in their lives. The film, based on a Texas Monthly story, follows Gary as he tries on all sorts of personas — redneck hitman, Russian hitman, the list goes on and on — while also romancing a potential client (Adria Arjona) under the guise of smooth-talking hitman Ron. But all those other personas? Powell-original creations!

A fun trope of contract killers in movies is the stealthy way the assassin moves about in plain sight while under the guise of another person. This is the trope that Glen Powell‘s new Netflix film, Hit Man, plays on. Powell and Richard Linklater wrote the film, which was inspired by an unbelievable true story. Our own Chris Bumbray felt ecstatic about this movie in his film review from the Toronto International Film Festival, saying, “Notably, despite being a movie about killing, the film is pretty non-violent and charming. If there was ever a feel-good movie to be made about murder-for-hire, this is it.” You can read the rest of his review Here.
Netflix has just released the new trailer for the comedy. The synopsis of the film reads,

Netflix has shared the official trailer and poster for director Richard Linklater’s new romantic action comedy Hit Man, starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. The film will open in select theaters on Friday, May 24, and then will start streaming on Netflix on June 7.
Based on Skip Hollandsworth’s Texas Monthly article, Hit Man will be available to stream in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. The movie is rated R for language throughout, sexual content, and some violence.
Written by Linklater and Powell, the movie was inspired by an unbelievable true story: a straight-laced professor discovers he has a hidden talent as a fake hitman. He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.

"My name is Gary Johnson, and my simple question for you is: who is your hit man?" Netflix has unveiled the main official trailer Hit Man, the hugely loved new "hitman" comedy from Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater. This first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival last year, with a rapturous premiere where audiences went nuts for (read my full review). It also went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, London and Sundance. From the Oscar-nominated writer / director Richard Linklater, starring the great Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a "hit man" meets his match with a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Co-written by Linklater & Powell and inspired by a true story, it's a cleverly existential comedy about identity. Hit Man arrives on Netflix in June, hopefully with a proper theatrical debut first before it's streaming.

Netflix has unleashed a new trailer for the Richard Linklater and Glen Powell-written comedy ‘Hit Man.’
Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater’s sunlit neo-noir stars Glen Powell as strait-laced professor Gary Johnson, who moonlights as a fake hitman for the New Orleans Police Department. Preternaturally gifted at inhabiting different guises and personalities to catch hapless people hoping to bump off their enemies, Gary descends into morally dubious territory when he finds himself attracted to one of those potential criminals, a beautiful young woman named Madison (Adria Arjona). As Madison falls for one of Gary’s hit man personas — the mysteriously sexy Ron — their steamy affair sets off a chain reaction of play-acting, deception, and escalating stakes.

After much wait and anticipation, Netflix is gearing up to drop the hottest movie of the year, and one of their best acquisitions in a while — Richard Linklater's "Hit Man."
Not to be confused with either the "Hitman" game series or David Fincher's thrilling "The Killer," this was one of the biggest hits of the fall film festival circuit last year, premiering in Venice to great buzz and continuing to gather praise in Toronto, New York, and Sundance.
"Hit Man" is inspired by the true story of a nerdy part-time teacher who works undercover for the police as a contract killer in sting operations. It stars Adria Arjona and Glen Powell, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Linklater. The film was praised for being a steamy hot dark comedy that showed Glen Powell was ready for superstardom.

A year ago today, IndieWire prepared three stories to run on election night, once the results came in. The one that ultimately posted, of course, declared Donald Trump the victor. Below, here are the two other drafts that IndieWire never had an opportunity to post: One, in the event that Hillary Clinton won the electoral vote; the other, if it was too close to call and triggering a recount.
First, here’s the story IndieWire would have posted if Clinton won:
America’s with her.
Hillary Rodham Clinton made history Tuesday night, becoming the presumptive 45th president of the United States of America – and shattering glass ceilings as the nation’s first female chief executive.
The Democratic candidate’s election comes 96 years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. XXX was the first TV outlet to call the victory, at Xx:xx p.m.

I tried to come up with a witty lede to begin this review. Be it a play on Gary Johnson’s now immortal “what is Aleppo” that would have been as insipid as that question is buffoonish or a spin on this film opening the same week as Marvel’s latest superhero film entry, nothing sounded quite right. Not because they didn’t fit the cliched style of these reviews, but because a film as potent and unshakable and moving as Feras Fayyad’s Last Men In Aleppo is simply beyond words.

Losing isn’t easy. It’s demoralizing at best, but especially so when that loss comes at the hands of a group of people whose win has resulted in a spike in hate crimes. But a majority of the voting population did lose, with their candidate—be it Hillary Clinton, Gary Johnson, or Dr. Jill Stein—emerging from November 8 with an uncertain future in the private sector.

Ethan Coen would like to thank a select few for really coming through this election season and helping the country elect Donald Trump as President of the United States.
In a scathing essay for the New York Times, the “No Country for Old Men” director took a page from Jimmy Fallon’s “Thank You Notes” segment on the “Tonight Show” and satirically called out a handful of people for electing “someone who admires the governance of Vladimir Putin” and who “pledges to cancel contributions to the United Nations.”
Coen begins by thanking Jill Stein voters, as well as Gary Johnson voters. “If your vote for Ms. Stein did not end up advancing your green agenda, it did allow you to feel morally superior to all the compromising schmoes who voted for Hillary Clinton,” he wrote. “And your feelings about your vote are more important than the consequences of your vote.

The policies of third party candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson were totally torn apart by John Oliver on Last Week Tonight. The presenter admitted: “This election has now achieved a dubious distinction, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are among the most disliked presidential candidates in history so it is hardly surprising that some seeking an alternative.” But he said the third parties are failing in major ways, highlighting Johnson and Stein in particular. Taking a break from all the craziness surrounding Donald Trump and his claim that Hillary Clinton and the media are conspiring to rig the 2016 presidential election, John Oliver focused on third-party candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson during Sunday’s episode of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight.” Believe it or not, some of Stein and Johnson’s policy proposals are equally absurd as what Trump has proposed.
Watch: John Oliver Dissects Clinton, Trump Scandals in Epic 20 Minute Takedown
For example, one of Stein’s flagship proposals involves canceling the $1.3 trillion debt burden weighing down students and recent graduates in the U.S., something she has said the president has the authority to do. Oliver pointed out that, unfortunately, that’s not exactly true.
“In terms of how fundamentally flawed that is on every level, it’s basically akin to saying ‘I’ll make us energy independent by ordering the post office to invade Canada,...

John Oliver explored the viability of a third party candidate in Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight.” At one point Oliver joked that both Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Libertarian Gary Johnson have likely benefited from the lack of media coverage they both complain of, since “their key proposals begin to crumble under the slightest bit of scrutiny.” Starting with Stein, Oliver looked at the central proposal of her campaign, which is to cancel student loan debt. Stein claims that the President has the authority to cancel the debt now by printing more money in a process called quantitative easing.

With the Libertarian Party and Green Party expected to harvest a combined 10 percent of the vote in this crucial election, John Oliver provided a warts-and-all analysis of Gary Johnson and Jill Stein on Last Week Tonight.

Gary Johnson really needs to start watching this show.
Okay, so Madam Secretary Season 3 Episode 2 didn't do a one-for-one exchange of Algeria for Syria. But it did manage to take an extremely complicated situation and present it in a way that would make sense to most people. Even if they did go for the typical Elizabeth-McCord-saves-the-day happy(ier) ending.
Being able to talk a seemingly noble general into ousting a narcissistic dictator isn't the only advantage that Elizabeth has in her version of this conflict. It's a three sided war, but so far the Us is the only major world power with skin in the game. Things are so much easier when you don't have to worry about pissing off Russia.
I'm personally hoping that this isn't the last we see of this conflict. While Season 2's Russia arc was a little nutty at times, I liked that things weren't...

Multiple million-dollar Rnc donors have urged the party to push out current nominee Donald Trump in the wake of continued controversy surrounding the businessman’s past, The New York Times and other outlets reported Thursday.
Among the top donors who pushed for the committee to ditch Trump were Missouri business executive David Humphreys and New York investor and philanthropist Bruce Kovner.
“At some point, you have to look in the mirror and recognize that you cannot possibly justify support for Trump to your children — especially your daughters,” said Humphreys, who alone has contributed over $2.5 million to the Gop from 2012 through the spring of this year.

Most of Aaron Sorkin’s professional life has been spent making political debates — both personal and public — into poetically entertaining and informative exchanges. In “The West Wing,” he did it every week. Josh and Toby would fight it out until one was proven the victor or a compromise was reached. In “The Newsroom,” Will McAvoy would lambaste politicians, and his reports would often lead to various ethical conversations with his staff.
The point is, Aaron Sorkin knows a thing or two about winning a debate, and our current presidential candidates could learn from his work. We’ve examined the most pertinent examples of debate procedures, and the points below represent key strategies for winning a verbal battle. Apply them wisely.

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson is looking more and more like an “SNL” version of a presidential candidate after he declined to name the leader of North Korea. In an interview with the New York Times on Wednesday, Johnson was asked if he knew the name of North Korea’s leader, to which he replied, “I do.” When asked if he wanted to prove that he knew the answer to the Times’ reporter’s question, he declined to name the dictator, who is obviously Kim Jong-un. The question came after Johnson was recently caught on live TV not knowing what Aleppo is and.
