Warner Bros. Discovery added 2 million direct-to-consumer (Dtc) subscribers in the first quarter of 2024. It now has a total of 99.6 million Dtc subscribers across Max, linear HBO, Discovery+, and some relatively small international streamers you’ve never heard of — don’t worry about those.
It’s just the second straight quarter of a return to Dtc-subscriber growth after three straight quarters of losses. The combination of HBO Max and Discovery+ was bound to cannibalize some subscriptions in the early going, and that is exactly what it did.
The company’s Dtc business made an $86 million profit in the recently ended January-to-March quarter. David Zaslav, the Wbd president and CEO, shorthands that segment to “streaming,” so you can too — but anyone who gets the HBO channel through their cable provider is counted there as well.

Bill Burr was in the middle of a standup set in the original room at The Comedy Cellar when his cell phone rang: It was Jerry Seinfeld. What do you do? Burr answered.
Seinfeld wanted Burr to play JFK in his Pop-Tarts (fake) origin story, “Unfrosted.” Burr immediately accepted the role — and then went back to telling jokes to the paying customers.
It was the fastest (and the most public) “yes” that Seinfeld and his writing partner Spike Feresten say they got from a tremendous ensemble comedy cast that includes Seinfeld himself, as well as Jim Gaffigan, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler, Hugh Grant, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer — there’s honestly just too many to list. That wasn’t always the case.

Marla Mindelle, who starred in and co-created the Off-Broadway hit Titanique, is debuting her new musical The Big Gay Jamboree Off-Broadway this fall.
The show is co-written by Mindelle and is described as a parody of musical theater itself. Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap are serving as producers of the show.
In 2019, LuckyChap had announced a deal to produce the title as a movie musical for Paramount, however that has not yet materialized. Their involvement in the stage show marks LuckyChap’s first foray into theater.
The Big Gay Jamboree features a book by Mindelle and by Jonathan Parks-Ramage (author of Yes, Daddy), with music and lyrics by Mindelle and Philip Drennen and direction and choreography by Connor Gallagher (Beetlejuice on Broadway). The production describes it as a show that centers on Stacey, who wakes up hungover, “in the most terrifying place of all: an Off-Broadway musical.

Did the best survivalists make it to the Outlast finale? Or did the players willing to play dirty get to the end over better survivalists on the Netflix show? Some fans want their favorite players to get another chance, and Javier Colón gave some advice to fans.
Javier Colón tried to get revenge on Alpha on ‘Outlast’ Javier Colón on ‘Outlast’ | Netflix
Camp Alpha and Camp Bravo were on the same side of the river. Naturally, they became allies and shared resources and information. That changed when Jill Ashock, Amber Asay, and Justin Court told Colón and Brian Kahrs about a different plan.
Alpha wanted to “expedite” the process of other players quitting. They told Bravo they should lure other players to them and then reject them, so they had to quit. Kahrs said this went against his morals, and Colón agreed.
Alpha took Camp Delta’s sleeping bags, and they quit the following day.

Netflix’s new reality TV competition show challenges survivalists to endure the Alaskan forest for a chance at a million-dollar payday. One team played an aggressive game, forcing multiple competitors to tap out. After the show aired, Javier Colón claimed the episodes didn’t portray how his teammate Brian Kahrs got “tricked,” causing him to fire his flare gun.
Brian Kahrs quit ‘Outlast’
Outlast kicked off with 16 survivalists split into teams of four forced to survive in an Alaskan forest with basic supplies. When the “lone wolves” couldn’t take it anymore, they would tap out by firing a flare gun.
By episode 4, Team Alpha went on to the offense and began sabotaging other groups to force them to exit the competition.

Los Angeles, Aug 25 (Ians) The hard work of ‘Batgirl’ cast and crew may not completely go to waste as the movie will get its own screenings, though only a select group of insiders will get a chance to see it.
Sources told ‘Deadline’ and ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ that ‘Batgirl’ will be screened on the Warner Bros. lot this week.
It is believed that only the cast and crew who worked on the film along with representatives and studio executives were given invites to the screenings that began and will go throughout the week.
One source described the private screenings as “funeral screenings,” as it’s likely the only time a handful of people get to see the film before it is locked away in a vault, either physical or digital, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Warner Bros. shocked everyone on August 2 when it announced its decision to shelve ‘Batgirl’, starring Leslie Grace in the titular role.

One day after news broke that Warner Bros.’ Batgirl film was being permanently shelved, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have issued their emotional response.
“We are saddened and shocked by the news,” reads a joint statement posted Tuesday by the duo on social media. “We still can’t believe it. As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves. Maybe one day they will insha’Allah.

“Batgirl” directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are in shock over the abrupt axing of their comic book tentpole. Warner Bros. announced Aug. 3 that it would not be releasing the 90 million “Batgirl” in theaters or on its HBO Max streamer despite the movie being fully shot and in post-production. The filmmaking duo, best known for helming “Bad Boys for Life” and episodes of “Ms. Marvel,” reacted on social media to the film’s shelving.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Westworld, Season 4, Episodes 1-6.] The nature of Westworld‘s reality is ever-changing, and raising plenty of questions this season is returning favorite James Marsden as Teddy Flood. Last seen two seasons ago, Teddy’s mysterious resurfacing has yet to be explained, but one thing is clear, and it’s that he’s drawn to Christina (Evan Rachel Wood). The new identity under which Dolores is functioning, Christina’s unaware of her past, her life as a host, and the role she’s playing in this new world as a story writer for humans under the control of Hale’s (Tessa Thompson) operation. In Episode 5, “Zhuangzi,” Teddy helped Christina “wake up” to the world around her, what’s next for them moving forward? Marsden opens up about his return, Teddy and Christina’s dynamic, and what’s on the horizon. (Credit: John Johnson/HBO) It’s been quite a while since...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Westworld Season 4 premiere.] Everyone who thought this season was going to deal with the apocalypse, raise your hand. After concluding Season 3 with some massive explosions and an implied “end of days” scenario for humanity, Westworld has again flipped its own script. Instead of showing society collapse, the Season 4 premiere introduces viewers to a mysterious new world (or multiple worlds) where Caleb (Aaron Paul) has a family, Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) is living in a cabin in the woods, William (Ed Harris) — or more likely, the host version of him — is up to no good, and Evan Rachel Wood is back as a new character, Christina. Here’s how it happens. John Johnson/HBO World #1: Caleb, Maeve and William The episode opens with William touring a data storage facility. Apparently, something was stolen from him eight years earlier by a “she” — Maeve? Hale-Dolores? At this point, it’s all part of...

"Someone in our station betray4ed us" Amazon has unveiled an official trailer for All the Old Knives, a modern espionage thriller from Danish director Janus Metz, who last made the excellent sports film Borg vs. McEnroe. This new film is arriving in April in theaters and on streaming. Right around the same time as this other Chris Pine spy thriller The Contractor, which was delayed for years. In All the Old Knives, two CIA operatives, and former lovers, reunite at idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea in the U.S. to re-examine a mission six years ago in Vienna involving a hijacked airplane where a fellow agent might have been compromised. Chris Pine co-stars in this with Thandiwe Newton, joined by Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Pryce, Corey Johnson, Ahd, Abdul Alshareef, and Nasser Memarzia. This trailer seems to give away a lot (who is the shady one?) but I'm still curious, this looks much better than The Contractor.

Batgirl has just started production in the streets of Glasgow this week, finally bringing the Dceu back to Gotham City and expanding Batman’s big-screen family of characters. Set photos have already teased other characters that might appear in the movie, but this is Barbara Gordon’s movie and we finally have our first look at Leslie Grace (In the Heights) in her Batsuit.
Fans of the “Batgirl of Burnside” era will immediately recognize Grace’s suit, which she revealed on her Instagram. Like it’s been ripped right out of a panel drawn by Babs Tarr, the suit combines a modern purple-ish blue jumpsuit with gold trim and a black cowl. It’s unclear if Barbara will also rock gold Doc Martens to complete the Burnside suit…

The makers of Lair, a new London set supernatural thriller are very confident that it will be a success. So confident that they’ve already started development on a follow up, The Bone Harvest. Is that wishful thinking, or does Lair have what it takes to launch a franchise?
Ben Dollarhyde is in jail, accused of killing his wife and son. There’s no question of whether or not he did it, we saw it in the prologue. He claims that he was possessed when the killing occurred, something that’s ironic since he and his partner Steve Caramore made a living debunking the supernatural.

Ben Dollarhyde (Oded Fehr) just murdered his wife and son. There’s no refuting it. He admits that his body committed the crime. His mind, however, did not. And while he knows saying that sounds crazy, he cannot stop himself from believing it and subsequently telling a colleague (Corey Johnson’s Steven Caramore) who might agree. Except Caramore has never been a believer in the supernatural despite the fact he, Dollarhyde, and Ola (Kashif O’Connor) have worked in the paranormal sphere for years. Rather than make a career out of testifying at trials and collecting cursed artifacts because demons are real, however, he’s done it precisely because nobody can prove their existence either way. It’s therefore an easy paycheck. Corroborate stories, feign expertise, and earn some “scratch” in the process.
Caramore is, however, offended by Dollarhyde’s accusation that he’s to blame for what happened. He’s...

"You brought that thing into my house!" 1091 Pictures has released the official trailer for an indie horror titled Lair, from filmmaker Adam Ethan Crow. This already premiered at FrightFest just a few months ago, and is arriving on VOD this November. A fractured family are forced to face their demons, metaphorically and literally, as they become embroiled in a man's attempt to prove the existence of a supernatural entity in order to overturn a friend's murder charge. It's described as "a new twist on the classic haunting horror formula" - this looks way freakier than it sounds written about here. The film stars Alana Wallace, Kashif O'Connor, Corey Johnson, Oded Fehr, Anya Newall, Alexandra Gilbreath, Aislinn De'ath, and Sean Buchanan. Uh yeah this looks extra spooky, with some good scares in this trailer alone. And they're still hiding plenty. This is way more than just "is there a demonic...

Former Democratic presidential contender Andrew Yang is planning to enter the race to succeed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in November.
The former tech executive, who was born in upstate New York and has lived for years in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, has been telling New York power brokers that he intends to run although no announcement is expected until next month, according to new reports Friday. The Democratic primary is in June.
Those Yang has tapped for advice recently are said to include NYC City Council Speaker Corey Johnson. He plans to meet with Rev. Al Sharpton next week when he returns to the city from Georgia, where he has been trying to help Democrats in two heated U.S. Senate runoffs. And he has called on two prominent political strategists who worked for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg as advisers, according to the New York Times Friday.

Shelley Atkin, ex-vp theatrical finance for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at 20th Century Fox, has produced her first feature film “Lair,” under her new company Ditto Films’ banner.
The film is a U.K. based LGBTQ infused horror movie and is written and directed by Adam Ethan Crow. In the film, a fractured LGBTQ family are forced to face their demons, metaphorically and literally, as they unwittingly become embroiled in a man’s attempt to prove the existence of the supernatural in order to overturn a friend’s murder conviction.
“Lair” was shot on location in the U.K. with a predominately female cast. Newcomers Anya Newell (pictured), Aislinn De’ath, Alana Wallace, Kashif O’Connor and Lara Mount star alongside Corey Johnson, Jen Brister and Oded Fehr.
The film has just completed post-production. Working alongside Atkin is supervising executive producer Scott Mednick (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”).
