My standard complaint about the Black Hammer comics is that they’re mostly static, locked into an initial premise that wasn’t all that exciting to begin with. I suppose that’s in distinction to “real” superhero comics, which rely on the façade of change – someone is always dying, someone’s costume is always changing, someone is always making a heel-face turn, and worlds are inevitably always living and dying so that nothing will ever be the same – but it’s not self-reflective enough to count as irony.
But some kinds of stories aren’t supposed to change anything – the whole point is that they don’t, and can’t, change the things we already know. Jam comics by entirely different creators tend to fall into that bucket: they’re sometimes “real” and sometimes not, but even if they’re canonical, they don’t push the canon in any direction.

Geoff Johns initially penned a script for a Green Lantern Corps movie in the Dceu, aiming for a release by the end of 2019. However, plans changed when it was revealed in April 2020 that Johns would produce a Green Lantern Corps series for HBO Max, indicating a shift in direction. Efforts have been made to distinguish the series from the CW’s Arrowverse, possibly to attract those uninterested in its lower-budget productions.
Scheduled for a 2021 release, Seth Grahame-Smith took over as showrunner in October 2020, with Geoff Johns’ role decreasing. The series was planned to consist of ten episodes, written by Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, and produced by Berlanti Productions. Confirmed characters included Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Alan Scott, Sinestro, and Kilowog.

Following the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu was officially concluded and Gunn’s and Safran’s Dcu officially took over as the primary cinematic universe for DC characters. Now we do know that plenty of projects are in development as a part of Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters, and one of the most notable ones is a live-action show focusing on Green Lanterns aptly titled ‘Lanterns.’

Wonder Woman took cinemas by storm when it was released in 2017. Despite being a period piece set during World War 2, it managed to bring in droves of fans to witness Diana Prince’s origin tale. So, with the same creative team returning for a sequel and the ever-popular decade of the 80s being its setting, this could outdo the first in every way. But with expectations comes disappointment as the film released during Covid caused quite a stir for its creative partners and had some rather questionable CGI. So today on DC Revisited, we’re getting into it all as we dive into Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984.
After the first film made $822 Million worldwide, a sequel was announced just one month after release. A few months later, it was announced that writer/director Patty Jenkins and her co-writer Geoff Johns would return and serve the same roles for this new venture.

This Batman article contains spoilers.
Joker continuity is a bit messy by design. Ever since the Clown Prince of Crime declared that he “preferred multiple choice” in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s seminal 1988 comic Batman: The Killing Joke, it’s been very tough to nail down just what is true and what isn’t about the villain’s origin story. Was the Joker once a failed comedian who went mad after criminals murdered his family and he fell into a vat of chemicals? Maybe. Or was he originally a crime boss known as the Red Hood? Is his real name actually Jack?
Multiple choice has mostly worked well for the Joker, who is meant to be Gotham’s embodiment of true evil. The fact that his story is indecipherable and ultimately unknowable makes him that much scarier of a threat for Batman. But things are getting a little too convoluted now.

This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.
At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”
A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.
The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

Tyler Hoechlin in ‘Superman & Lois’
The CW’s confirmed that Superman & Lois starring Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm) will wrap up with the upcoming fourth season. The superhero action series was the last remaining holdout from The CW’s old comic-book-inspired primetime lineup that included Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Supergirl, Batwoman, Stargirl, and Gotham Knights.
Season four will consist of just 10 episodes and is expected to air in 2024.
“While we’re sad to say goodbye to Superman & Lois at the end of Season Four, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers. Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created—on and off screen,” stated executive producers and co-showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher.”

The live-action Titans series had tremendous potential, from its source material to the pedigrees of the talent bringing the heroes to television. Titans failed to work from the first episode to the last. As a television series, it needed a bigger budget for better effects, and the caliber of actors needed to be stronger to pull off these larger-than-life personalities.
Most of the storylines were drawn from Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’s seminal run from the early 1980s or the early issues from Geoff Johns and Mike McKone’s run in the 2000s. Both required a consistent tonality along with a budget to make the scope of the stories work.

“I’m gonna kill Aquaman and everything he holds dear,” promises Black Manta in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I’m gonna murder his family and burn his kingdom to ash.”

Fans were disappointed when plans for Ben Affleck to star and direct in a solo Batman movie — first announced back in 2015 — were quashed a few years later when the studio re-envisioned the project with a younger actor, ultimately resulting in Robert Pattinson playing the character in “The Batman”.
Now, storyboard artist Jay Oliva is coming forward to share some details about the aborted project, and what could have been.
“I can’t really say too much other than it was f**king awesome,” Oliva shared in an interview with Inverse. “It was the best. It was amazing.”

The scrapped standalone Batman movie that Ben Affleck was set to direct and star in nearly a decade ago had all the potential in the world to be an exciting addition to the DC canon, per Jay Oliva, a veteran storyboard artist who consulted with Affleck and others on the project.
Affleck would’ve reprised his role as the Caped Crusader after inhabiting it for both Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but he departed the project six years ago for personal reasons. While Oliva couldn’t say “too much” in a new interview with Inverse about what this film would have been like if it had seen the light of day, he did reveal that “it was f*cking awesome. “I often wonder,” the Joker chides Batman, staring at his enemy through the haze of a post-apocalyptic desert. “How many alternate timelines do you destroy the world because, frankly, you don’t have the cojones to die yourself?”
For fans of the Snyderverse, that little tidbit from Zack Snyder’s Justice League felt like a cruel tease, a reference to multiversal adventures that would never actually arrive on screen. Most fans likely assumed that the original plan was for these stories to unfold in a Justice League sequel, possibly one pitting Batman against Superman and Darkseid to create the oft-glimpsed Knightmare reality.
But according to information from someone close to the project, some of those larger ideas about Batman would have been explored in the solo film that Ben Affleck was originally tapped to direct, write, and star in. Planned as a continuation of Snyder’s first set of Dceu films,...

Ben Affleck had packed almost a century-worth of “Batman” mythos into a shelved DC script, according to former storyboard artist Jay Oliva.
Oliva, who left DC in 2017, teased in a recent interview with Inverse that Affleck’s take on “Batman” would have been an unprecedented interpretation of the Caped Crusader superhero.
“I can’t really say too much other than it was fucking awesome,” Oliva said. “I’ve worked on a lot of Batman things and what was really cool about it was, it was tying together a lot of really cool Batman storylines that had never been really explored. It was the best. It was amazing.”
He continued, “Ben’s story was going to cover something that had never really been covered in comics but was building off of storylines in the Batman mythos over the last 80 years and approaching it from a new kind of perspective. It was...

Ben Affleck’s Batman movie was one of the most anticipated projects in the DC Extended Universe, but it never came to fruition. The actor, who played the Caped Crusader in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, was set to write, direct and star in his own solo film, but he eventually stepped down from the role and handed the reins to Matt Reeves, who cast Robert Pattinson as the new Dark Knight.

The long and winding path leading to the live-action DC Universe, which still remains in flux as the new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran tries to reshape the franchise into their own vision, has been delineated by the movies that were made and released just as much as the various projects that ultimately never saw daylight. And there has been a lot of them, as one look at Warner Bros.' original slate for their superhero franchise makes painfully clear.
But of all the unmade movies to keep DC diehards awake at night in the years since, one of them continues to haunt fans more than any other: the "Batman" film that would've starred and been directed and co-written by Ben Affleck. Unfortunately, this fell apart for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which had to do with the actor setting aside time to focus on...

With recent scheduling decisions at Max, there have been plenty of questions surrounding whether completed episodes of shows will see the light of day.
Production on Doom Patrol Season 4 has been completed for some time now, with the first half concluding in January 2023.
Many thought the episodes would materialize after the conclusion of Titans Season 4, but with Max nixing several projects, despite production being complete on some, there have been questions about when the show could return.
James Gunn responded to a fan of the show on Threads who wondered whether the final episodes will air, and it's good news.
Gunn, who oversees DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, said that he's "not focused on day to day TV scheduling," but he'd be surprised if "completed episodes" of the show "are not going to be released."
He later followed up with the following:

This article contains spoilers for The Flash.
It took about a decade, but finally, Warner Bros. got its Flash solo movie in theaters, with Ezra Miller reprising their role as the Fastest Man in the DC Universe. While the movie’s very disappointing box office return thus far likely means we’ll never get a proper sequel, The Flash does leave a few loose ends that would have presumably been addressed in the next installment. One cliffhanger in particular has even spawned a major online fan theory that just so happens to have been confirmed by director Andy Muschietti himself, leaving us daydreaming about what could have been.
Although The Flash is heavily inspired by 2011’s fan-favorite comic book Flashpoint by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, Muschietti branched out with a different version of events. But one thing the director kept from the source material was the death of Nora...

As repeated numerous times, the importance of the source material is immense when it comes to comic-book-oriented adaptations, especially at a time when creators are getting sidelined by big studios and corporate giants despite their works being responsible for the multimillion-dollar adaptations in the first place. Most of the time, the makers of these adaptations take artistic liberties and interpret the narrative in their own ways, which very seldom surpasses the source. The recently released Dceu flick The Flash draws heavily from the seminal story Flashpoint, written and drawn by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, a story that had an unprecedented effect on DC universe’s continuity. Although the movie extensively deals with the source’s time-travel narrative, alternate timelines, and multiverse-related themes, there are some crucial changes that give it a distinctiveness of its own. We will discuss a major portion of the similarities and differences between the source...

After so many delays, controversies, and false starts, WB’s latest DC extravaganza has finally hit the big screen. Yes, The Flash is easily the studio’s most ambitious Dceu installment to date, especially when it comes the sheer amount of comic book nerdiness packed into this movie.
Barry Allen’s multiverse-shattering adventures not only brings back most of the Justice League but also Michael Keaton’s Batman and all the Burtonverse references that come with it. And there are so many more easter eggs to be found in the film’s two-and-a-half-hour runtime, including quite a few that even The Flash‘s very spoiler-y marketing hasn’t yet revealed.

Whether it’s using her lasso to get the truth out of her enemies or her gauntlets capable of trapping energy and using it to her advantage, Wonder Woman has some pretty cool abilities. And that’s not even getting into her crazy speed and jumping ability. While we may not have gotten her invisible jet, the other staples of Wonder Woman are all there, so join us on today’s DC Revisited as we dive into Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.
While we may have finally received a Wonder Woman via Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman, the project had actually been in development for quite some time. Comedy director Ivan Reitman was even attached to the film as a producer in 1996. Then in ’99, Jon Cohen was tapped by now-producer Joel Silver to write a Wonder Woman script. He was even eyeing Sandra Bullock to star in the title role.

It’s curtains for “Gotham Knights” at The CW. The network will not move forward with a second season of the DC series, Variety has learned.
The series was absent from a statement of upcoming programming from the CW, which announced renewals of both “Superman & Lois” and “All American: Homecoming” for the 2023-2024 broadcast season.
The news about the future of “Gotham Knights” comes more than two weeks ahead of the date that the series is slated to air what would now be its series finale. The program premiered on March 4 and was set to conclude its 13-episode first season on June 27.
From Warner Bros. Television, “Gotham Knights” follows Bruce Wayne’s rebellious adopted son, who forms a team with the children of Batman’s enemies. Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams co-created the series and served as executive producers alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden of Berlanti Productions.

In one week, Warner Bros. Pictures The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti opens in theaters on June 16.
Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film. Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life.

The Flash may be the fastest man alive, but his upcoming movie has had a slow crawl to release. We've previously documented the full timeline of production on "The Flash" and the many different directors and writers who've been at the helm. In 2015, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ("The Lego Movie") were hired to write a treatment for "The Flash," with an option to direct. They instead chose to board "Solo: A Star Wars Story" as co-directors, but were later fired from that movie and replaced with Ron Howard. Fortunately, they got a second shot at the world of superheroes with "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse".
The final version of "The Flash" was directed by Andy Muschietti ("It") and written by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein ("Spider-Man: Homecoming"), and Joby Harold ("Army of the Dead"). However, Lord and Miller retain off-screen writing credits for "additional material," indicating that elements of their...

Fifteen years ago this month, Iron Man became a genre-defining hit that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The anniversary has Marvel Studios founding chairman David Maisel looking to the past and to the future as he plans his next venture.
Maisel recalls that over a weekend in 2003 he came up with the concept of Marvel producing its own movies — films that would combine its characters in one universe. He pitched Marvel on that idea and got hired to oversee its film efforts, working to secure financing for a slate and convincing Marvel to delay licensing more of its characters to other movie studios, ala the way Spider-Man was at Sony and X-Men was at 20th Century Fox.
“Marvel was not what Marvel is now,” Maisel tells The Hollywood Reporter. “No one believed in us for years.”

It's no secret by now that DC's "The Flash" will pull some of its universe-resetting story from Geoff Johns and Andy Kuberts' 2011 comic run "Flashpoint," but fans of the speedy superhero still don't know exactly how much of the new movie will draw inspiration from the famed 5-issue run. /Film's Jenna Busch attended a screening of the new film with director Andy Muschietti in attendance, and the filmmaker shed some light on exactly what parts of "Flashpoint" we should expect to be incorporated in Barry Allen's (Ezra Miller) big-screen solo debut.
Muschietti noted first that by the time he boarded the project, "the story or at least the outline was decided" by DC already. Screenwriter Christina Hodson handled the film's script, and Muschietti said that the story of "The Flash" isn't as repetitive as some other superhero origins. As he put it:

It’s been an incredibly long journey for the Fastest Man Alive on the big screen. But various false starts later, Warner Bros.’ The Flash is finally about to take a bow in theaters. Directed by Andy Muschietti (It) from a script by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), the film in part adapts the classic DC comic Flashpoint, in which Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) goes back in time to save his mother from death and completely changes the present, creating a dystopian alternate DC timeline. While it doesn’t look like the movie will get too bogged down in the many subplots of Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s miniseries, The Flash will incorporate quite a bit of DC movie history into its runtime.

This Titans season 4 article contains spoilers.
With shows like Loki and movies like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Marvel has established itself as the source for multiverse stories in television and film. But comic book fans know that Marvel was relatively late to the multiverse game, having been beaten to the punch several decades earlier by the DC story “The Flash of Two Worlds.”
So it was more than a little satisfying to see Gar Logan aka Beast Boy take a trip through the Red that connects all of the DC worlds in the ninth episode of Titans fourth and final season, “Dude, Where’s My Gar.” As Gar (Ryan Potter) moves through the Red, we get glimpses of various other DC properties, including Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) of Stargirl, Swamp Thing (Derek Mears) from the short-lived 2019 series, as well as he and Cyborg’s animated counterparts from Teen Titans Go!.

Right after the midseason break, “Titans” returned with back-to-back episodes showing the team getting trapped inside the mystical realm of Caul’s Folly and navigating their way out of it. Sebastian and May got their hands on the Horn of Trigon, which can allow them to bring back the interdimensional multiversal demon into the earthly realm. However, in these two episodes, the disappearance of Garfield Logan, aka Beast Boy, irked fans the most, and even though the team was saved from the destructive powers of Brother Blood only through Gar’s assistance, they had no idea where he could be. The ninth episode of this final season, titled “Dude, Where’s My Gar?” not only answers that question but also takes Garfield Logan on a journey of self-discovery, which entails numerous multiversal clues and possibly is the best episode of the entire series itself. The end is near for Titans.
HBO Max on Wednesday announced the second half of Titans Season 4 will launch Thursday, April 13, with two episodes, followed by weekly releases through May 11.
"In the mid-season premiere, the Titans – with the exception of Gar – are returned to the place they had vanished, the Temple of Trigon, only to find Sebastian and Mother Mayhem are no longer there," the synopsis reveals.
"The Titans rush to find them before Sebastian summons Trigon, their pursuit leading them to a mysterious town whose populace is hiding a deep secret," the streaming service teases.
"Along the way, the Titans come across a prophecy that may require Kory to make a huge sacrifice to save the world, but Dick's feelings for Kory surface and he refuses to let her die."
Sounds scary, right?
"In the final episodes, the Titans enter into an epic battle to save both Kory and the world.

The superhero Shazam, formerly known by his beloved golden age name, Captain Marvel, became a fan favorite among readers right from the 40s, partially due to the charm the character brought and partially due to his unique origin. Although creators C.C. Beck and Bill Parker conceptualized the World’s Mightiest Mortal in 1940 with the recently debuted Man of Steel in mind, the departure from conventional superhero origins by making a teenager magically transformed into the all-powerful hero added distinctiveness. Later, as Captain Marvel, aka young Billy Batson, merrily shared his powers among hapless souls, the innovativeness kept adding on. Freddy Freeman and Mary Bromfield were the two major characters with whom the Captain shared his powers. The trio was known as Marvel Family and had their own titles, which became immensely popular.

When I first saw Shazam! I was truly impressed with the mix of humor, horror, and action. And with the latest, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, I found a sequel worth entertaining in. It is funny, smart, and is just as clever and engaging as the first. And much of that credit can be given to the screenwriters behind it. Henry Gayden, who wrote the original film, is back. He is joined this time around by Chris Morgan. The two have done a terrific job of creating a continuation that doesn’t repeat itself, but still maintains the heart of the first.
We recently had the pleasure of chatting with both Chris and Henry about the new film. They opened up about taking on a superhero story and splashing in mythology. The two discussed what David F. Sandberg brought to the experience, and how cool it was to have Helen Mirren on set.

This article contains nothing but Shazam! Fury of the Gods spoilers.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a big movie. It’s essentially a team movie, with not only Billy Batson, but his entire foster family bringing a total of six superheroes to the table (not to mention the presence of Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard). And they’re facing off with three villains, in the form of Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler as Anthea. And then there are a menagerie of magical monsters that populate the film’s final act. And if all of that ain’t enough, there’s a massive DC cameo (which has been inexplicably spoiled in commercials for the film), plus some other fun deep cuts from throughout Shazam history.
So with all of this in mind, we sat down with director David F. Sandberg on the latest episode of...
