Actor Joe Mantegna has previously recorded a commentary for the 1996 Stephen King adaptation Thinner with the film’s director Tom Holland (whose other credits include Fright Night and Child’s Play)… but that didn’t stop him from sitting down to record a new commentary for Scream Factory’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Thinner! This time, Mantegna was joined by producer Mitchell Galin – and we’ll get to hear what they had to say about Thinner when the Blu-ray is released on January 23rd. Copies are available for pre-order through the Scream Factory website and on Amazon.
Scripted by Tom Holland and Michael McDowell, Thinner is based on a novel King wrote under his Richard Bachman pen name and tells a story of supernatural terror as one man faces a countdown to the ultimate excruciating payback. A 109-year-old Romani man, hell-bent on revenge for the death of his daughter, exacts a...

"You've been dealt a bad deal… so don't make it worse." Did anyone know about this? There's a brand new 2022 remake of a classic 1940s film noir film titled D.O.A., premiering soon at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival. The original D.O.A., directed by Rudolph Maté & starring Edmond O'Brien, was about a P.I. named Frank Bigelow who is told he's been poisoned and has only a few days to live, so he tries to find out who killed him and why. "While the story shares a title and premise with the original movie… most of the plot elements are original," the director of this new one explains. "With the clock ticking, Bigelow descends into a world of crooks and double-dealers, treacherous women and violent men, slashing through a tangle of conspiracies to figure out who 'killed' him & why." This one stars John Doe as Frank, with Paola Duque,...

Rob Zombie's Firefly family returns for a real day of the dead in the 3 From Hell trailer.
Free the three! Now we can have a real day of the dead. Just when you thought there was no justice in this world, the first full-length 3 From Hell trailer promises a bloodbath and a devil of a time. The odds were a million to one against Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis Firefly (Bill Moseley), and Vera-Ellen "Baby" Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie) surviving their standoff with the police at their last rampage, but with a little faith, nothing is impossible.
3 From Hell is a family movie. The Firefly family has a deadly tradition going back to 2003, with Rob Zombie's directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses making way for the 2005 sequel The Devil's Rejects. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, the trilogy tells the story of Dr. Satan and his merry band of murderous misfits.

The film: Morbidly obese and deeply unpleasant lawyer Billy Halleck (Robert John Burke) runs over an old gypsy woman with his car, distracted by his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) who is doing something rather rude to him. His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

*here be major spoilers. Director: Jourdan McClure. Writers: Ryan Finnerty and Kevin Haskin. Cast: Michelle Page, Art Alexakis, Chris Coy, Michael Cudlitz, Lucinda Jenney, and Bill Moseley. Tagline: "Still waters run deep." Rogue River is the second project that this reviewer has seen from Kejo Productions. The other was a thriller titled Sensored starring Robert Picardo. Sensored was a entertaining outing. Rogue River is less thrilling and more predictable. Even a theme of incest only creates a few unsettling moments. This film, which clocks in at a mere eighty-one minutes, is not really recommended for horrors fans seeking something really frightening. The film follows Mara (Michelle Page) on her journey to bury her father's ashes. She is interrupted by a friendly man, Jon (Bill Moseley). He wants to help her after her car has been stolen. Or, does he want to help himself to Mara when he has her back at an isolated cabin?...

Synopsis:
While spreading the ashes of her father along the stunning Rogue River, Mara (Michelle Page) bumps into pleasant local Jon (Bill Moseley) who befriends and consoles her over warm conversations about his life. When the two head back to their cars, Mara notices her own has mysteriously vanished and with sundown quickly approaching, she reluctantly takes Jon up on his offer of warm hospitality for the night. She’s soon going to wish she didn’t.
It might be easy to dismiss Rogue River as yet another derivative torture film - “Torture Porn” is just a ridiculous term which I will never use – but I urge you not to because this little twisted nightmare is well worth your time.
Okay, so it does feel that tiny bit familiar and when the craziness is dialled up a few notches, every torture film you’ve ever...

The film opens and ends with a river, but it is more a tranquil river rather than a rogue one. Introspective Mara (Michelle Page, who looks like a Keira Knightley stand-in) spends too long gazing at this Rogue River; and her car is towed. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, Mara relies on the kindness of the stranger who appears at her side. Didn’t her mother warn her about getting into cars with strangers?
Jon (Bill Moseley) takes her home to his wife Lea (Lucinda Jenney)—no wait, she’s his sister!—who is preparing dinner. After some awkward conversation, Mara retires to bed; and everything gets really weird. Jon shows up in her bedroom in his underwear and freaks her out. Then she runs into Lea in a bathrobe in the kitchen. Lea pees on the floor whilst repeating some creepy phrase, yanks the wig off her head...

Ever wonder what the kids from Home Improvement are up to these days? Well, when it comes to Zachery Ty Bryan, who played the oldest Taylor kid, Brad, the answer might surprise you. He's producing movies, including the shocking horror flick Rogue River, that hits the shelves this week.
So, how did he transition from a teen heartthrob to a behind-the-scenes dealmaker? About four years ago, he and his long-time friend Adam Targum (a writer/ producer on CSI: New York) decided they wanted to approach the entertainment industry from an entirely different angle. They figured that their diverse blend of skill sets would make them a unique team in the production realm, and set about finding scripts to bring to fruition under the banner of Vision Entertainment Group.

Olive Films will be bringing Stephen King’s Thinner to Blu-ray this August. The 1996 Tom Holland-directed film stars Robert John Burke, Joe Mantegna, Michael Constantine, Kari Wuhrer, and Lucinda Jenney. Thinner was originally a novel released in 1984 novel by Stephen King, under his pseudonym Richard Bachman:
“Based on the best-seller, Stephen King’s Thinner stars Robert John Burke (Robocop 3) and Joe Mantegna (House of Games) in a story of supernatural terror and countdown to the ultimate payback. A 109-year old gypsy (Michael Constantine, My Big Fat Greek Wedding), hell-bent on revenge, exacts a curse so shocking it compels its victim to gorge himself in an effort to avoid shrinking away to nothingness. With time running out and a torture so bizarre and powerful, even death seems a more likely option.”
The movie will be available on Blu-ray from Olive Films starting on August 21st. The retail price is...

Janet Grillo is an Emmy Award winning producer, an Award winning writer and director, and a former Studio Executive. We date back to our days as acquisitions executives in the late 80s when I was with Republic and she was with New Line and based in New York. She came to L.A. for the American Film Market and stayed downtown. One day she went to a well known antique book store called Caravan Books (founded in 1954 and still operating!), located underneath the Biltmore Hotel at 5th and Grand and was held up at gunpoint! We were all totally confouned by such New York style brazenness confronting our New York friend.
In 2007, Janet executive produced the esteemed documentary Autism: The Musical with Bunim Murray Productions, which premiered on HBO in March, 2008. It is distributed by New Video. Autism: The Musical received the coveted audience awards at Newport, Palm Springs and Mill Valley Film Festivals, and premiered to uniformly excellent reviews at the Tribeca Film Festival. It was short listed for an Academy Award Nomination. It won two Emmy Awards in 2008, including Outstanding Non Fiction Special (i.e.; Best Documentary).
A filmmaker in her own right, Janet wrote and directed two short films; At the Beach starring Lucinda Jenney, and Flying Lessons starring Dana Delany (Desperate Houswives, Castle, China Beach). Flying Lessons premiered at Palm Springs International Film Festival in August of 2008, to good reviews. It was programmed by many prestigious festivals here and abroad, including the Atlanta, L.A. Short, Rhode Island and San Luis Obispo International Film Festivals. It won the Silver Lei Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at the Honolulu International Film Festival, the Best Dramatic Short at First Look Festival, L.A. and Best Performance at WILDsound Short Film Festival in Toronto, Canada. Her feature script, Fly Away, won the Dylan Thomas Award for Best International Screenplay from the 2010 Swansea Bay Film Festival in Wales.
Made as a SAG Ultra-Low Budget Independent film, and shot in 14 days, Fly Away premiered as 1 of 8 out of 2000 submissions in Dramatic Competition at the influential South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, this March.
Fly Away, went on to win the Best Film and Special Jury Prize for Performance (Ashley Rickards) at the Arizona International Film Festival. The film opened immediately afterwards in April 2011, in limited theatrical engagement, to rave reviews. It is currently distributed by FlatironFilms/ New Video via iTunes, NetFlix, Amazon and VOD/Time Warner-Comcast.
The complex portrayals of a single mother and her severely autistic teenager daughter (Beth Broderick and Ashley Rickards, who does not actually have the disorder), in collaboration with a talented ensemble, were widely lauded by major critics, as “exceptional...remarkable...first rate...as natural as breathing...The actors are so exemplary it is hard to imagine this is not a documentary,” and “deserving of an Oscar Nomination.”
Critical Acclaim For
Fly Away
“Fly Away is a gripping, life-enhancing low-budget little film about the physically and emotionally punishing struggles of a single mother raising an autistic child. The actors are so exemplary that it is difficult to imagine this is not a documentary. They might not be household names, but they will be...As the mother, Beth Broderick is as natural as breathing... In a class by herself (Rickards), she deserves, at the very least, an Oscar nomination. Not since Patty Duke in The Miracle Worker has any actor portrayed a handicapped child (especially one with autism) with the same depth of passion and realism. Her emotional range seems to know no limits. She’s more heartbreaking than the movie itself, and that is very high praise indeed.”
- The New York Observer By Rex Reed
“The lovely, heartbreaking "Fly Away" benefits from superb performances and a gripping story managed with simplicity and grace by writer-producer-director Janet Grillo. As sensitive and affecting as this mother-daughter drama may be, the film skillfully bypasses its genre's potential pitfalls, opting for intimacy over sensationalism, poignancy over sentimentality.... Broderick is wonderful, a delicate mix of the resolute and resigned, her face a quietly expressive map of pain and pride. But enough can't be said about Rickards, best known from TV's "One Tree Hill," who so convincingly embodies Mandy's wild child spontaneity, startling effusiveness and unwieldy physicality. She's remarkable — in a remarkably challenging role.”

“Treading warily into territory that few dramas dare to explore, “Fly Away” is a defiantly unsentimental look at the complex codependency between a harried single mother and her severely autistic daughter... Taking a coolheaded approach to hot-button issues, “Fly Away” overcomes its neatly bow-tied ending with strong performances (including Greg Germann as a sensitive neighbor) and a spare, intelligent script. Ms. Grillo has no need of wordiness: Jeanne’s bruised body and exhausted face say it all.”

“The best thing a serious, no-nonsense movie can do is give us a glimpse into the world of someone whose experiences are so far away from our own that they are difficult for us to even imagine... Jeanne is multidimensional in a very real, down to earth sense...Broderick plays Jeanne with a lost look on her face. She is overwhelmed by her circumstances, but is determined to persevere. After many changes in key, when the symphony that is this film comes to a close, we see that Jeanne may be about to face her biggest challenge yet. An ending can be seen as a new beginning, and this film leaves me hoping for a sequel.”

Also highly awarded, Ashley Rickards, the extraordinary young actress who plays the severely autistic teen Mandy, also stars in the new MTV comedy hit, Awkward. For which she was just listed as one of the 10 Breakout TV stars of 2011 in Entertainment Weekly. Ashley is Not autistic, obviously. Although most people think she is, after watching the film. She turned 18 when she shot Fly Away. Pretty remarkable range and talent, and at such a young age.

Rogue River
Directed by Jourdan McClure
Starring Michelle Page, Bill Moseley, Lucinda Jenny
USA 2010
First time helmer Jourdan McClure does a solid job with this effective but ultimately disposable horror / thriller that treads a well-worn genre path, not dissimilar to Misery or I Spit on Your Grave.
A distraught Mara visits a remote fishing location in Southern Oregon to spread the ashes of her recently diseased father. When her car mysteriously vanishes, she decides to trust the kindly stranger she met merely ten minutes ago and allows him to take her to his house to call for help where his obviously unhinged wife also lives. Improbable circumstances occur and Mara ends up having to stay the night, which is when the couple’s true nature boils to the surface.
There’s little directly wrong with Rogue River aside from it’s contrived opening segment which sees our protagonist make a series of unbelievably stupid decisions,...

Rogue River
Stars: Michelle Page, Bil Moseley, Lucinda Jenney, Michael Cudlitz | Written by Kevin Haskin, Ryan Finnerty | Directed by Jourdan McClure
Taking a trip into the wilds of Oregon to scatter her fathers ashes at Rogue River (hence the title), Californian Mara (Page) finds her car towed by the local Sheriff. However all is not lost as a kindly passing stranger, played by Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2‘s Bill Moseley, offers to give her a lift, which she begrudgingly accepts. Big mistake…
Yes, no points for guessing what happens next as Rogue River is as cliched as they come – Mara is kidnapped and both emotionally and physically tortured by good-old-by Jon and his cohort Lea, played Moseley and his real-life wife Lucinda Jenney respectively, before being subjected to a degrading act of copulation with her own brother who has come to find her! Of course this being your typical torture/rape/revenge flick,...

Nothing could be creepier than waking up in the middle of night to a partially nude Bill Moseley. The latest trailer for Kejo Production's and Vision Entertainment's Rogue River scares viewers with more than just that, however. Characters Jon (Moseley) and Lea (Lucinda Jenney) terrorize a grief stricken Mara (Michelle Page) morning, noon and night. Lea and Jon remove clothes and wigs to shock audiences and to make Mara wish she had parked her car somewhere else, somewhere much farther away from Oregon's beautiful Rogue River.
Have a look at the newest film poster for Rogue River, which has added some details since the original, posted here (Rogue River Original Film Art). As well, Dread Central has debuted a much fuller trailer for this horror thriller, which shows more of actress Michelle Page and too much of Moseley. The film clip is below.

We're always interested in seeing what genre fave Bill Moseley is up to and trust most of our readers are as well, which is why we're happy to start the week off with the trailer debut for Bill's latest project, director Jourdan McClure's Rogue River.
Rogue River follows a young girl named Mara (Michelle Page) who, while struggling with the recent death of her father, sets off on a solitary journey to Oregon’s Rogue River to scatter his remains.
When Mara’s car gets towed, she accepts a ride from Jon Wall (Moseley), an affable redneck type, mourning the death of his young daughter. A quick detour leads them to Jon’s beautiful cabin deep in the woods where his wife, Lea (Lucinda Jenney), quickly captivates Mara as they find solace in the shared grief of their own personal tragedies. But all is not as it seems on the picturesque Rogue River.

This scribe caught up with actor and all-around nice guy Bill Moseley(The Devil’s Rejects), who's adding yet another genre notch to his already prolific career in horror.
"I'm up here in Grants Pass, Oregon, shooting a sick and as yet uncovered movie called 'Rogue River'," the actor informed us. "It's directed by Jourdan McClure - remember that name! – and it stars me, Michelle Page (Sensored) , Michael (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) Rooker, and my real-life girlfriend (television actress) Lucinda Jenney."
Filming until December 20th, first-time filmmaker McClure is shooting from a script penned by screenwriters Kevin (Sensored) Haskin and Ryan Finnerty. Dread did some dredging of Rogue River, and here’s the upshot: The film revolves around the plight of Mara (played by Page), who, while scattering her father’s ashes, makes the acquaintance of a seemingly benign man named Jon (Moseley). Appearances are deceiving,...

Stephen King, that one-man cultural juggernaut, unleashes his latest cinematic effort with this adaptation of one of the novels he wrote under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. That name doesn't sell quite as well as his own, hence "Stephen King's Thinner".
Unfortunately, this horror flick, which has arrived just in time for Halloween, is one of the decidedly inferior King adaptations, more on a par with "Sleepwalkers" than "The Dead Zone". The film opened on Friday without the benefit of press screenings.
The story involves an obese lawyer, Billy Halleck Robert John Burke), who falls under the spell of a gypsy curse. Halleck and his wife Heidi (Lucinda Jenney) are driving home from dinner when she impulsively decides to provide him with some oral gratification. Understandably distracted, he fails to see the old gypsy woman and runs her down. When the judge and police chief, who happen to be his good friends, decide in a quick hearing that the incident was strictly an accident, the woman's father (Michael Constantine) takes matters into his own hands. He lays curses on all three of the conspirators, with Halleck's being described in only one word: "thinner."
Although momentarily disturbed, Halleck is soon overjoyed at his newfound weight loss, in which he loses pounds a day while continuing to eat all he wants. His elation turns to fear, however, when he discovers that he can't stop the process and that he's literally fading away. Meanwhile, his fellow victims are experiencing their own horrible transformations. Blaming his wife for causing the accident that brought about the curse, he also becomes suspicious of her close relationship with the family doctor.
He decides to fight back, with the aid of a gangster (Joe Mantegna) whom he's successfully defended on a murder charge. Soon, it's open warfare between "the white man from town" and the gypsies, whose ranks include the beautiful Gina (Kari Wuhrer), someone you definitely wouldn't want to play darts with.
After a fairly slow and subtle buildup, all hell eventually breaks loose in a violent conclusion, with a particularly nasty final development involving a lethal strawberry pie.
"Thinner" is not one of the more cinematic King stories, with the first two-thirds mainly concerned with the lead character's alarming weight loss. This transformation is well-achieved by makeup artist Greg Cannom, who convincingly alters Burke into a 300-pound behemoth and back down again. But the chief effect of watching the actor, in his fat makeup, chowing down again and again is a desire to watch a Richard Simmons infomercial. Theater owners be warned: Concession sales are likely to plummet.
Director Tom Holland, who has quite a bit of experience with this type of thing ("Fright Night", "Child's Play"), is ultimately unable to prevent the material from lurching into camp, and he is not helped by such decisions as casting Constantine as a 106-year-old gypsy. Burke, who's a long way here from working with Hal Hartley, does an effective job while coping with various kinds of inhibiting makeup. And Mantegna, who truly deserves better material than this, provides some fun moments as the Mafioso who consults his mother when it comes to important matters like curses. The author, himself, shows up in a cameo as a befuddled pharmacist.
