It’s quite rare for actors to grow up on screen, but Farida Jalal is one such actor who has portrayed an array of characters in the space of the hero’s sister, a mother, and now a grandmother.
While Hollywood has Leonardo DiCaprio, who started his career at the age of 17, India has Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Farida Jalal. All of their careers are textbooks in cinematic longevity.
Farida started her journey at 17 with the film ‘Taqdeer’, a role offered to her by Tarachand Barjatya, grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya. How she was offered her first role has a story of its own, something that rarely happens to artistes. She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she went on to win, where her co-finalist happened to be the first superstar of Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna.

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

Content is king is the belief the film industry has thrived upon all along. An appropriate casting as per the needs of the story completed the basics of making a film. A director craved for a good performer rather than a star and did not chase a star just for the sake of it.
It was because of content that films with no star value such as ‘Saraswatichandra’ (Manish), ‘Kora Kagaz’, ‘Dosti’ (Sudhir and Sushil) and ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (Salman Khan) went on to become hits. These are just a few examples.
Rajesh Khanna had delivered many flops before he could give his first hit and so had Amitabh Bachchan. When a good script that matched their talent and persona came up, it made them a star.
When a star is born thanks to a few huge hits, everybody wants to cast him and this phenomenon causes the downfall of a star.

A lot of film stars made handsome money even when the studio system was on when they were on the roster of one of the studios in Mumbai which made films at regular intervals. The studios engaged actors on a monthly pay and the stars, thus, had a reason to feel secure. If a star was becoming popular, he/she gained more.
All one needed was talent and education qualifications counted for little as far as what the stars earned. They made many times more than what a white-collar graduate earned working for some or the other company.
Then came the era of actors charging per film. The cost of filmmaking was moving from thousands to lakhs. The first thing that a successful star did when a regular income started was to invest in a house. And, the next acquisition was, of course, a car. Chevrolet and Impala were the...

A modern example of India’s shared heritage with Iran, her career was itself nothing short of a film story. Enamoured of the silver screen when young, she began with child roles. but on coming of age, found no major actor ready to share screen space with her apart from a reel – and real life – strongman, until the foremost thespian of the time gave her a rare chance.
After Dilip Kumar agreed to Mumtaz (Askari) as one of the romantic partners for one of the twins in “Ram Aur Shyam” (1967), there was no looking back for her. Male actors, who had once spurned her as a ‘B-grade’ actress were now more than ready to accept her. She was so much sought after that a superstar of the time, with whom she had a string of successes, reportedly went into a sulk if she acted with other heroes.
But Mumtaz, who,...

She was so much sought after that a superstar of the time, with whom she had a string of successes, reportedly went into a sulk if she acted with other heroes.
But Mumtaz, who,...

Veteran actress and politician Jaya Prada recalled how megastar Amitabh Bachchan, in spite of being injured, completed the shooting for a song from the 1984 film ‘Sharaabi’. She added how Big B helped her during the shoot and played ghungroo on his hand despite the injured.
She said: “I remember right before we shot for this ‘Mujhe Naulakha Manga De Re’ song, Amit ji happened to injure his hand during Diwali. In a part of the song, he was playing ghungroo (ankle bells), but because he was in pain and already injured, he used to end up bleeding every time he shot for the scene. Regardless, by keeping his hand in the ice box back and forth, he finished shooting the scene. His commitment and focus are an example for every artist to learn from. I have learned so much from him.”
Jaya is known for working in Telugu and Hindi cinema.

From a prominent family of actors, he initially considered a career in science before following his father and elder brother into the film industry, but faced a tough time with his first 18 films tanking. It was then he reinvented himself to portray a new brand of hero, inspired by both James Dean and Elvis Presley.

During the school times the first-hand experience of enacting the role of a teacher on the Teacher’s Day (5th September) was an anticipated day as on this day we got a chance to play the role of a teacher. While preparing for that day had a palpable excitement, the occasion during those school times also underlined how did the Teachers enacted their role in moulding the future of the children day in and day out. Hindi cinema has also over the course of 75 years of its journey time and again touched this unique institution and reminded the citizens of the country about the important role a teacher plays in the life of an individual!
Evolution of the character of Teacher on the silver screen has been a study in motion. It has evolved from being an idealist and non-compromising one to being a teacher with his or her human fallibilities as well.

Nepotism is again a much-discussed subject in Bollywood, what with 3 prominent star kids Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor and Suhana Khan making their debut in Zoya Akhtar’s next. The “N” word makes all of us movie buffs look inward. Is Bollywood really a den of nepotism? But if we look at the history of Hindi cinema, the star-kid syndrome is relatively recent. It started when Raj Kapoor’s son Rishi Kapoor made his debut with Bobby. Prior to that all the major stars, from Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor in the 1950s to Rajendra Kumar, Jeetendra, Dharmendra in the 1960s to Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s, were outsiders. Thereafter star-kid after star-kid was launched with much fanfare. And yet there are 5 outsiders with zero connections in the film industry, who broke through in in spite of nepotism ruling the roost.

Meenakshi Sundareshwar(Netflix)
Starring Abhimanyu Dassani, Sanya Malhotra
Directed by Vivek Soni
This could have been a lovely story of a newly-married couple groping its way through the new experience, finding themselves stranded in the journey and then coming back together. Initially Meenakshi Sundareshwar reminded me of Basu Chatterjee’s Piya Ka Ghar where the problem faced by the newlyweds was quite simple: privacy.
This one goes for more. In trying to wind its way through the newly weds’ adjustment problems, the plot ties itself up into knots. Soon we are watching a film about a Tamilian couple from Madurai who are incompatible because… ummm.. she loves Rajinikant (first day first show) and he hates movies(they put him to sleep). Okay, too minor a reason for marital discord? Then try this: he has to move to Bengaluru for a job leaving his new bride behind with his family(no ogres there,...

Like in any other household, actor Tusshar Kapoor says even in his house it is his parents who indulge his son Laksshya the most. Laksshya will turn five in June and it seems he loves dancing - just like his grandfather, yesteryears dancing superstar Jeetendra.
"I have danced with him and he has done a good job in the videos that I have done with him. He dances with whoever he feels comfortable. The ones who indulge him the most are my parents. The grandparents always indulge the kids the most, in every family," he revealed, about the affection Laksshya gets from his parents, actor Jeetendra and producer Shobha Kapoor.
He adds, "My son loves to dance and sing because of all that they do in school. He was a bit shy initially but he has opened up. He enjoys dancing and is in touch with that side of his personality.

Flix FlashbackDirected by Joshiy and written by Dennis Joseph, the film has one of the best mainstream screenplays in Malayalam cinema.Neelima MenonThe film opens in a wintry Delhi. It’s Republic Day and as is tradition, five inmates will be released from the Central prison for good conduct. One of the inmates excitedly runs towards a man painting a signboard. He seems to be in his mid-40s, his hair and beard are greying, framed on a face fitted with a pair of thick black spectacles with cracked lenses. He moves with the aid of a wooden stick and his right hand is immobile. That was an unconventional introduction of a hero in Malayalam cinema back then—G Krishnamurthy (Mammootty), the once fiery young journalist and cartoonist who finds himself deceitfully shut in jail with broken limbs for taking on two politicians. Written by Dennis Joseph, easily one of...

Saina
Starring Parineeti Chopra, Meghna Malik, Eshan Naqvi,Pavan Kaul
Directed by Amole Gupte
Thank God for true heroes. And for a film about a true hero like Saina Nehwal rather than some scumbag gangster whose life-story should be thrown into the nearest gutter. Saina is a picture-perfect biopic. Inspiring and engaging, it makes all the right noises (and that includes some wonderfully worded motivational songs in the background) and shuffles its confident feet in the comforting domain.
We may not get to see anything unexpected in this biopic. The bandwidth of storytelling for all sports bio-pics is nearly identical: struggle preferably with a pushy parent goading the prodigy to glory and greatness, the stardom, the fall, the final triumph. Saina goes through the motions with sure-handed efficacy.
The sequences on the badminton court are well shot. Cinematographer Piyush Shah lenses the insecure middle-class girl and her skyhigh dreams in the opposite of rose-tinted glasses.

Core business is a phrase that got familiar with the arrival of corporate houses in the film business. Which is to say, they would stick to the business they came to do and know it better, rather than branch out into other businesses that may look lucrative but you knew little about.
In the film industry, too, the jobs were marked out for people who specialised in or were trained for the task.
But, when it comes to the film industry, every aspirant hopes to become an actor to start with, and aim for stardom. Rajiv Kapoor passed away on Tuesday after a massive heart attack. For the first time in 31 years (his last released films were Zimmedaaar and Aag Ka Dariya in 1990), he was gearing up for a new film. He was set to return in Toolsidas Junior, starring Sanjay Dutt.
The Ashutosh Gowariker-produced film has been slated for release this year. Gowariker informs he has wrapped shoot for the production. "Rajiv was so affable and played his part with much fun and ease. Will miss him deeply," he tweeted as condolence. The filmmaker added that he had been "a fan from his Ram Teri Ganga Maili days".
Think Rajiv Kapoor and you are thinking Ram Teri Ganga Maili. The legendary Raj Kapoor cast his youngest son opposite Mandakini in the 1985 film, which went on to be a blockbuster.
In a career that actively spanned less than a decade, Rajiv Kapoor had a...

Actor-producer Tusshar Kapoor says there will be no Diwali bash at his place this year. The reason is his father, yesteryears star Jeetendra, was a close friend of actor Rishi Kapoor, who passed away earlier this year.
"Unlike every year, there will be no big Diwali bash at our residence because of the sad demise of our very dear family friend, Rishi Kapoor ji, and of course the pandemic," said Tusshar.
Rather, for the Kapoors the festival of lights is all about spending time with family this year.
"It's festivities and celebrations with just the family. I have been pretty occupied with our film 'Laxmii' which was released yesterday. Also my son is on vacation, so I am spending a lot of time of with him," said Tusshar.
"This Diwali is indeed a happy Diwali but with a difference, where minimalism will take precedence. However, the fervour will...

The first time I spoke to the great Rishi Kapoor, he was running around trying to promote his directorial debut Aa Ab Laut Chalen. A mutual friend, Simi Garewal, introduced us and I spoke to him over the landline (there were no cellphones back then) at a recording studio.
He was polite and warm and I immediately liked him. But our very next telephonic interview where he spoke at length on many topics and said some harsh but true things about his pal Jeetendra’s daughter Ekta Kapoor, was a misfire.
The next morning he was on the phone berating me, “Arrey yaar yeh tumne kya likh diya.”
I couldn’t get it then. But I came to terms with it eventually. He would say things in the heat of the moment and then regret it and blame it on the writer(me). One night after a commercial actor won...

Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor are 2 of the finest young performers in Bollywood today. They have lit up our screens with their flair, their style, their looks but most of all the fearlessness with which they bring characters to life. Baaghi 3 brings them back together for a follow-up from the smash hit Baaghi, after a break in between for Baaghi 2. Both previous films have been lauded for their musical quality, both in terms of their willingness to break the barriers of costumes and dance, as well as the popularity of their raw rhythms. Vishal-Shehkar are the hit team asked to take on this challenge to find a musical continuation to this sensational film series.
Dus Bahane 2.0 opens this album and is exactly what the title suggests. This is a reworking of hit song ’Dus Bahane’ from Dus, this time with Tiger and Shraddha rather than Abhisekh, Zayed, Suniel and Sanjay as the leads.
