One of the great things about the old broadcast TV model, in which seasons stretched to 20+ episodes, mere months separated one season from the next, and production schedules were thus unforgivingly demanding, was that producers always had an insatiable need for new talent. Filming 22 consecutive 42-minute episodes over the course of a few months? Your principals aren't going to be enough to cover all the ground your story will invariably traverse, and besides, they wouldn't have the time or energy even if you asked.
The solution to this problem? Guest stars!
Series from this golden age of television, from sitcoms like "Friends" and "Frasier" to dramas like "Charmed" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," were powered by guest stars in the same way the larger Hollywood machine is powered by the legions of extras, bit players, and uncredited walk-ons who fill each frame with glorious humanity. Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

Plot: The surviving member of a family massacred by bandits tries to escape from the killers with her family’s horse.
Review: Studios and production companies will often try to get around marketing their horror releases as straightforward horror movies. This is how we get the term “elevated horror”. It’s a marketer’s way of trying to get across the idea that the horror movie they’re promoting isn’t your average horror movie. This is something special, a movie to be held up above that other trash called horror. Given this aversion to accepting the horror label, it’s surprising to see that Paramount has chosen to market director Michael Patrick Jann’s cleverly titled Organ Trail as a “Horror Western”… because by doing so, they have slapped the horror brand on a movie that I wouldn’t have considered to be a horror movie otherwise.

Last year, we heard the awesome news that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to a horror Western project with the brilliant title Organ Trail (inspired by the real life Oregon Trail, a wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon back in the 1800s). The film has since made its way through production, and while we still don’t know when exactly Paramount intends to release Organ Trail, it has taken an important step toward its release: it has secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association. Organ Trail has earned an R rating for “strong violence, language and some sexual references.”

Ever since MTV’s The State went off the air in 1995, the 11-member sketch comedy troupe has faced the same problem every time it tries to reform: Finding the time when every member can commit to a project is virtually impossible. That finally changed earlier this year when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the entire entertainment industry and left this particular creative group at home with little to do.

When “Drop Dead Gorgeous” was released in 1999, Variety’s review was less than glowing: “Taking bazooka aim at a barn-door-wide target — hinterland beauty contests — [the film] is a fitfully amusing satire that would have gained a lot of mileage from just a tad more subtlety.”
Perhaps. But then the movie gained a massive gay following over the past 20 years precisely because of over-the-top performances from a cast that included Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney and the late Brittany Murphy.
“Right from the very beginning, walking into meetings as a very young man, I told them that this was a movie for people who are outsiders and don’t feel like they’re represented by regular movies,” director Michael Patrick Jann told Variety at a special screening of the film on Saturday night in Hollywood. “It’s an anti-mainstream movie and they still bought it for some reason.”

Jesus loves winners. and 20 years later, we still love Drop Dead Gorgeous. In the latest movie anniversary to make you truly feel the harsh, cruel and unjust passing of your youth, Drop Dead Gorgeous, the beauty pageant satire starring Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Kirstie Alley and Ellen Barkin, came out on July, 23, 1999. The dark teen comedy, written by former beauty pageant queen Lona Williams and directed by Michael Patrick Jann, was like if Miss Congeniality and Heathers had a baby that grew up and went through a goth phase. And while it's gone on to become a beloved cult classic over the years, ridiculously quotable and full of before-they-became super-famous stars, Drop Dead Gorgeous was a...

Just yesterday, we learned that Vanessa Hudgens would be playing one of the lead roles in NBC's new comedy Powerless, which is set in the DC Comics universe. Now Deadline brings word that three more actors have joined the ensemble: Firefly alum Alan Tudyk, Community's Danny Pudi, and A to Z's Christina Kirk.
For those who haven't heard, the show is set at one of the worst insurance companies in America as its regular employees deal with the fallout of damage wreaked by superheroes and villains. Hudgens is playing Emily Locke, a claims adjuster who enjoys her job helping people but becomes frustrated at "the disruptive antics" of the heroes in her city. The lives of superheroes are kind of a nightmare if you stop to think about it for two seconds. They balance garbage jobs and secret identities with regularly going toe-to-toe with villains and creatures powerful enough to wipe out humanity. That’s a lot of stress, especially since superheroes don’t have company-paid health insurance. But as much as it might suck to be a superhero, being a normal person living in a superhero world is 1000% times worse. Here you are just trying to get up in the morning, drop your kids off at school, get to work, figure out dinner, and worry about mundane things. Then along comes a superhero fighting a Monster of the Week™ and suddenly your office building is a pile of ash. Now how are you supposed to get those Tps reports done!? Such is the premise of Powerless, a new un-superhero show that NBC picked up for a pilot.

It’s true that, on occasion, the DC comic book universe has, perhaps, seemed a little serious – particularly if you consider Batman to be the most successfully adapted character across media. All that brooding, and growling and sitting in his cave has indeed created a sense of darkness that is perceived as permeating the whole enterprise. Soon, however, there will be television comedy called Powerless, which will be headed up by Vanessa Hudgens, and is set to provide an injection of levity.
Created by Ben Queen (A to Z, Cars 2) for Warner Bros TV, this workplace comedy series was picked up by NBC some time ago, and has now cast its lead. Vanessa Hudgens will play Emily Locke – a dedicated and hard-working claims adjuster, employed by the most incompetent insurance company in America. In addition to being a modern comedy giant, Bob Odenkirk seems like a really nice guy. He’s like the Dave Grohl of comedy, minus the backlash. The movies have not treated him all that well, however, particularly in the case of the Mr. Show-derived Run Ronnie Run, which became a heavily-compromised affair. Still, Odenkirk has to date managed to produce three features as a director, and they remain largely under the radar as far as mainstream audiences are concerned. With his star having risen via Breaking Bad, and now Better Call Saul, Odenkirk seems poised for greater popular recognition. Here’s hoping the extra clout can him back behind the camera making features because, as good as the first three are, it feels like the best is still ahead of him.

The year was 1999 and by the summer, teen films were all the rage. The year kicked off with two unexpected box office successes, Varsity Blues and She’s All That, before studios started pumping out hit after hit. In the same year, Drop Dead Gorgeous, a dark comedy about teenage girls competing in a local Minnesota beauty pageant, bombed at the box office. Unable to capture the same excitement as American Pie or 10 Things I Hate About You, the film quickly disappeared from theaters after earning a dismal $10.5 million at the box office.
It was only later, when released on DVD and VHS, did the movie become a cult classic. Similarly to Jawbreaker, which also came out in 1999, Drop Dead Gorgeous proved to be a pivotal film — introducing audiences to Amy Adams, making use of the mockumentary style — even if it was overlooked at the time.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Halloween episode is a tough act to follow and “48 Hours” doesn’t quite deliver in the same way. What is usually enjoyable about the show is its healthy balance of silly comedy and plot progression. This week the show struggles to find that balance as most of the episode is driven by Jake and his absurd nature. “48 Hours” focuses on Jake’s mistakes and how they affect the rest of the workforce and quite frankly, it feels like a huge step back in comparison to the previous episodes.
