For sound designer Damian Volpe, The Lighthouse was impossible to resist. Centered on two 19th century lighthouse keepers driven to madness, while stranded on a remote Atlantic isle, the latest from Volpe’s frequent collaborator Robert Eggers was simply rife with sonic opportunity.
Working with a limited set of elements—including roaring winds, crashing waves, and chugging industrial machinery—Volpe’s goal was to refine a sonic palette for the psychological horror film that felt immersive, gritty and handmade. “[Eggers] really loves that,” Volpe says, “especially for something like this, [where] the conceit is a bit like, ‘Hey, we found this weird, old film on a shelf. What is this thing?’ So, I put as much analog goodness as I could get into the sound design, via lots of field recording, and then some trickery in the mix, as well.”
Deadline: Tell us about your first exposure to Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse.

Three Inches, the Syfy pilot with James Marsters and Stephanie Jacobsen that didn't get ordered to series, airs tonight at 9 pm Et on Syfy.
To recap, the network ordered the 90-minute pilot back in the spring of 2010. It was filmed in September in Toronto and, in December, Syfy decided to pick up Alphas instead, and to tweak Three Inches into a half-hour because the two were conceptually similar.
Six months went by with no news, and then in July word came from James' Fb page that Syfy would not be giving Three Inches a full season, but that the pilot would air eventually. Well, that's tonight.
Here is the synopsis, from ScienceFiction.com:
In Three Inches, professional daydreamer and underachiever, Walter Spackman (Noah Reid) is struck by lightning, and develops a unique “super” power — the ability to move any object using just his mind… but only a distance of three inches.

Exclusive: Landscape Entertainment has promoted J.J. Jamieson to the newly created position of President of Television. Additionally, Bob Cooper’s film and television production company has renewed its first-look TV deal with FremantleMedia North America. Under the pact with Fremantle, Landscape has been developing scripted series projects, mostly cable dramas. Jamieson, who previously served as Svp, has spearheaded these efforts, selling a dozen projects to such networks as HBO, USA, AMC, TNT, Lifetime, Comedy Central, Syfy, Cartoon Network, and ABC. They include the Syfy pilot Three Inches and the ABC drama Beautiful Gangsters produced by Anthony Lapaglia. “There’s always a bit of luck, though I do find that in general, the harder we work, the luckier we get,” Jamieson said of the company’s slew of TV sales. As for extending the collaboration with Fremantle, “they’ve added value to every pitch we’ve taken to the marketplace,” he said.

Exclusive: Desperate Mob Wives? ABC is eying a drama series for next summer produced by Bob Cooper and Anthony Lapaglia. Titled Beautiful Gangsters, the project, now in development, has FremantleMedia Enterprises on board to handel worldwide distribution outside of North America through Cooper’s first-look deal with the company. And in a rare occasion for a network-level project, the script is written by a young newcomer, recent UCLA Film School graduate Ryan Tavlin. “It’s great to be supporting such a talented young writer as Ryan,” Lapaglia said. “Beautiful Gangsters is a stellar piece of writing, as sophisticated as it is juicy.” Beautiful Gangsters revolves around three mafia wives who cut a deal with the FBI to enter Witness Protection together in exchange for their testimony, in the hopes of giving their families a second chance at life. The FBI relocates them to a suburban border town in Canada, where they struggle to fit in,...

TNT – “We know drama” – is developing, you guessed it, a new drama series. Penned by Mick Davis (Eleventh Hour), this action-adventure series is called Wasteland and promises to be more on the supernatural side of things.
According to Variety, the show will be set in the American Southwest and “involves a U.S. marshal who is charged with hunting down the supernatural escapees on the run following a federal prison break.”
“Supernatural escapees” brings to mind the days of Reaper or Clark hunting down Phantoms in Smallville, but I’m sure as we get more details Wasteland will prove itself far different from anything over at the CW.
Wasteland will be exec produced by Davis along with Robert C. Cooper and J.J. Jamieson with Jordan Helman as co-exec producer.

The TNT Network has claimed time and time again that they know drama. That seems to be what they refer to everything as. We've watched flicks ranging from Animal House to Salem's Lot, and each time the "We Know Drama" bug pops up. Go figure. Anyway, the studio has a new supernatural series coming up that's being billed as - you guessed it - action-adventure drama. Come on, guys! Embrace the genre!
According to Variety TNT has bought a script from Mick Davis and is now in development on a project called "Wasteland."
From FremantleMedia North America and Landscape Entertainment, the show will be set in the American Southwest and will tell the tale of a U.S. marshal who is charged with hunting down supernatural escapees on the run following a federal prison break.
Davis was an exec producer and writer on CBS' Rufus Sewell starrer "Eleventh Hour," which ran for one season.

"Dead boys, dead boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when Zeros come for you?" I do hope those lyrics are included in the opening theme song for "Zeros", one of the seven newly announced programs Syfy has in development. If zombies don't tickle your fancy, then Kevin Sorbo back fighting mythological monsters and Lee Majors getting all bionic again might.
Of greatest interest to horror fans is going to be the zombedy "Zeros". Here's how Syfy's press release describes the show.
In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.
