“I’m an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider.”
What does it mean to be a strong woman? Is it visible muscles à la Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2: Judgment Day? Is it impressive feats of strength like climbing a mountain or braving white water? Is it putting yourself in harm’s way to save a friend? As it turns out, the answer is all–and none–of the above. There is no one way to be a “strong woman.” Sometimes it’s as simple as just showing up for the hard moments. Writer/director Neil Marshall explores the concept of female strength in his 2005 The Descent, a harrowing story of friendship and betrayal, strength and survival. In their latest episode, the Lady Killers kick off a series on Hidden Horrors by descending into the complicated themes of this terrifying film and facing off against the monsters lurking within the human heart.

"Six women go spelunking" doesn't necessarily read as a great logline for a horror movie, but Neil Marshall's "The Descent" takes that premise and crafts an unforgettable exercise in terror. As the saying goes, it's a B-movie with A+ filmmaking.
Being trapped underground combines two common fears, confinement and darkness, and in "The Descent," the heavy shadows only reinforce the claustrophobia. Marshall and his cinematographer Sam McCurdy chose to light the film's sets (a facsimile of a real cave system built and shot at Pinewood Studios) primarily with the characters' flashlights. Even color choices — some frames are filtered entirely red or green — are used diegetically from those lights or flares.
As the characters get deeper and deeper into the cave, darkness subsumes each and every frame. It needs to, for the whole reason a cave is a scary setting is because of what you can't see. And yet, Marshall...

Back then, no one was expecting The Descent to go on and become one of the most widely acclaimed horror films of the decade. Even today, Neil Marshall’s second creature-feature (the first being Dog Soldiers) remains a favorite among audiences and critics everywhere. This iconic film defies those expectations based on its cast and pitch — not a man in sight as six women battle a clan of cave-dwelling monsters — and then delivers a thoughtful study of friendships, grief, and survival.
So when a sequel was announced, fans’ curiosity and anticipation turned into nervousness once it was revealed that Marshall was neither directing nor writing the follow-up. Instead, the first film’s editor, Jon Harris, was promoted to director, and the script was handled by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins. Other details about The Descent Part 2 were scant prior to its 2009 release, but after it was finally seen,...

Though moviegoers and filmmakers alike may sometimes think of Hollywood as a purveyor of art and entertainment, the industry is, above all, a business. This means that the bottom line is of the utmost importance to studio executives, which, unfortunately, sometimes leads to decisions that don't produce a favorable outcome for viewers. Case in point: movie sequels. When a film is a hit, producers start itching to replicate its success, and sequels are seen as the best way to do that. However, not all follow-ups are made equal, and things sometimes get left behind in the rush to generate another box office smash.
Strict continuity isn't necessarily the most vital element in making a great sequel, but a little cohesion doesn't hurt. The examples we've compiled below are sequels that completely ignore the previous installment(s) in the series, much to the consternation of dedicated fans. In some cases, re-writing...

The Pitch: Well before the rise of the "It's actually about trauma" trend in horror and the Jamie Lee Curtis meme that came with it, there was "The Descent."
In Neil Marshall's suffocating, dismal, gooey 2005 subterranean survival movie, there aren't any masked, stab-happy killers tip-toeing about, nor is there a supernatural curse being passed from one individual to another. The only "trauma" in the film is the very literal kind that exists in its characters' heads. It's the type they can't escape no matter where they go and no matter what they do. Natalie Mendoza, a star of the BBC One drama series Hotel Babylon and The Descent horror film franchise, has been cast in the lead role of Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! The Musical, filling the vacancy left when the Tony-nominated Karen Olivo resigned in April over what she perceived as industry silence regarding the workplace harassment and abuse claims levied against theater producer Scott Rudin.
(Rudin had no involvement in Moulin Rouge!)
With the casting of Mendoza, announced today by producers Carmen Pavlovic and Bill Damaschke, the full Moulin Rouge! cast is in place for the resumption of performances on Friday, September 24, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The musical originally opened on July 25, 2019, but performances were suspended in March 2020 when Broadway went dark due to the Covid pandemic shutdown.

[[tmz:video id="0_o3nirofk"]] Natalie Mendoza says she forgives Harvey Weinstein for his alleged sexual assault on her. We got the Australian actress Wednesday at Lax and asked if she'd forgiven him for what she claims he did to her during a 2002 script meeting -- allegedly lunging at her and groping her, before she threatened to punch him if he didn't lay off. Surprisingly, she does -- and her explanation is interesting. Sounds like she thinks society is partially to blame for Harvey's misdeeds,...

[Welcome back, readers! With the 2017 Sundance Film Festival beginning this week, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the great midnight movies that have come out of the fest over the years. Be sure to check back here each day this week for more Midnight Memories from Daily Dead!]
Last January marked ten years since Neil Marshall’s The Descent was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Over a decade after it was featured in the Park City at Midnight lineup, The Descent is almost universally considered a modern horror classic, which is unfortunate for yours truly because until recently, I’d never actually seen it. But after finally venturing into this cave, I am happy to say that this is one of those rare movies that completely lives up to the hype.
For those unfamiliar with the basics, The Descent follows six women as they go on a spelunking trip in the North Carolina stretch of the Appalachian Mountains. A year before, one of the group members, Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), lost both her husband and her daughter in a car accident, and her friend Juno (Natalie Mendoza) sees this as an opportunity to bond in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The Descent remains one of the scariest, most inventive horror movies of the 21st century... all with a cast of kick-ass women.
Neil Marshall’s horror film The Descent stands as something of an anomaly for aficionados of both feminist and horror cinema. In a genre often populated with overtly sexual female protagonists who are, as The Cabin in the Woods ironically points out, either killed off first (but not before we are privy to a little tits and ass) or maternal figures—think The Ring, Mama, The Exorcist, and most recently The Babadook—the women we see in horror films are often polarized opposites. They are either the virgin mother or the whore.
Yet, Marshall’s cult classic rejects these pop culture stereotypes and imbues his heroines with biceps, bravery, and a finely tuned bullshit detector.

The role of women in horror films has always been a hot topic for debate. Some argue that horror films marginalize women and paint them as hypersexual beings with no depth. The opposing argument asserts that the existence of a "Final Girl" in most horror films is a testament to female empowerment, and that horror films celebrate women and their role in the cinematic universe. There is merit to both sides of the argument, but we're more interested in spotlighting some standout female characters in genre film who have positively portrayed women, showcased them as being just as tough (or more so) than their male counterparts, and challenged some of the stereotypes attached to women in film. Here are ten of our favorites: Alice in Resident Evil Alice is a pioneer for ass-kicking ladies. She's one of a select few female heroines in an action franchise – albeit an action, horror,...

New York — The Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" will be performed as scheduled Friday night, a day after an actor playing the comic book hero was badly injured during the special effects-laden show. Producers blamed human error and the union representing actors vowed to investigate.
"Tonight's performance will go on as scheduled. The technical elements of the show are all in good working order, and we can confirm that equipment malfunction was not a factor in the incident," said Rick Miramontez, a show spokesman.
The injured actor, Daniel Curry, suffered an injury during the Thursday night performance, which was immediately halted. The actor was at Bellevue Hospital on Friday in stable condition with a serious leg injury.
Curry is a graduate of the Laguardia School of Performing Arts – the so-called "Fame" school – and appeared in an episode of "Smash" and toured with the "Man In The Mirror" Michael Jackson Tribute tour.

New York -- A stuntman who claims he suffered a concussion, whiplash and two holes in his knees while performing as the comic book hero in Broadway's "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" has asked producers to turn over any relevant information as he weighs pursuing a negligence lawsuit.
The stuntman, Richard Kobak, claims in a series of papers filed earlier this year in state Supreme Court that he suffered the leg injuries in 2010 while filling in for another injured stuntman at the most expensive show in Broadway history.
He alleges that the rigging he used for the show's aerial acrobatics wasn't recalibrated for him and, as a result, he made 70 hard landings on stage during performances and rehearsals. He says the hard landings created a 1.4-millimeter hole in his right knee and a 9-millimeter hole in his left knee.

The news surrounding Hollywood's annual TV pilot season has heated up in recent weeks with the casting announcements of not one, but three "Twilight" stars. It's hard for us to think about life beyond the fifth and final Twi-film, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," but it's clear that the actors are thinking about life after the films that made them household names.

Now here is a series that could be a winner. Americana is a ritzy clothing line run by a powerful, wealthy family. A good script would balance an intriguing look behind the scenes of the fashion industry, perhaps reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada, and some juicy, soap-style family drama. I’d give it a watch for sure. Americana is coming to ABC with star, Anthony Lapaglia, and joining him now is the ever so lovely Emilie De Ravin.

Cue "Hail to the Chief" because TV has found its president.
Bill Pullman, who famously took on the role of head of state in the 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day," has signed on to play the Us leader in NBC's White House comedy "1600 Penn," according to The Hollywood Reporter." Pullman joins former "American Dreams" star Brittany Snow (playing his Type A daughter) and "The Book of Mormon's" Josh Gad (playing his spacey son) in the single-camera pilot about a dysfunctional first family.
Pullman previously inspired viewers in his legendary (even if cliché-filled) "Independence Day" presidential address, in which his character, fictional President Thomas J. Whitmore , said, "We will be united in our common interest ... We are fighting for our right to live, to exist and should we win the day ... The “Geek Chorus” in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has reportedly been cut from the show, according to the New York Times. The four-person group — modeled after the chorus in classical Greek drama — consisted of three comic geeks and a young woman who explained plot points in the musical. The chorus was widely panned by critics, leading some to predict its removal after the departure of ex-director Julie Taymor earlier this month. “The production will not comment on any substantive changes to the show,” said spokesperson Rick Miramontez in a statement.

Your friendly neighborhood MTV Splash Page editor was in attendance at a performance of "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" last night, and while there were a few technical glitches that stalled the show, there didn't appear to be any on-stage injuries during the production. The same cannot be said of a performance last week, however, that put actress T.V. Carpio out of commission for two weeks.
Carpio, who plays the eight-legged, goddess-like Arachne in the musical, suffered the undisclosed injury during a March 16 preview performance, according to The New York Times. The report indicates that the injury occurred during a fight scene with actor Matthew James Thomas, who replaced Reeve Carney as Peter Parker for that night's performance.
Carpio has been replaced by America Olivo as the show's Arachne, and played the role during last night's performance, which featured a high-flying, wire-assisted brawl between Spider-Man and Arachne in Act II...

Beleaguered Broadway musical Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark has been marred by another accident - actress T.V. Carpio has temporarily bowed out of the production after an onstage mishap.
Across The Universe star Carpio replaced injured Natalie Mendoza as villainess Arachne in the musical earlier this year, but now she's had to take leave too.
Carpio was hurt during a stunt last week (ends20Mar11) and has abandoned the role to allow herself time to recover.
In a statement, spokesperson Rick Miramontez says, "T.V. Carpio sustained an injury on Wednesday, March 16 during an onstage battle scene with a fellow actor. On doctor's orders, she will be out of the show for the next two weeks."
BroadwayWorld.com reports Carpio is nursing a whiplash injury.
Actress America Olivo is now taking over the role until Carpio's return.
The show, which will temporarily close in April so producers can overhaul it before its official launch in June, has been plagued with onset accidents. Four other castmembers - including Mendoza - have been left injured after incidents in rehearsals and preview performances.

Another day, another piece of bad news for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Producers announced today that actress T.V. Carpio, who plays the enigmatic villainess Arachne, was sidelined from the show for two weeks after an onstage injury during the March 16 performance. She has been replaced by America Olivo. Carpio herself was a replacement for the original actress playing Arachne, Natalie Mendoza, who withdrew from the show after sustaining a concussion in November. The nature of Carpio’s injury was not immediately known.

This is somewhat terrible to say but this just doesn't really feel like news does it? The reason why I say that is because we always hear that something is going wrong with this production. How is it even possible? Well, enough about that. According to Deadline: Carpio, who replaced Natalie Mendoza in the role of the villain Arachne, is the latest, or should I say newest, to be injured in a Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark-preview performance. Mendoza left the show after being hit in the head by a rope, and Carpio suffered neck injury in a hefty fight scene with Peter Parker. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark has received state and federal violations after the accidents and was slaughtered by critics who reviewed despite the whole $65 million budget production pushing back its opening curtain again and again. Maybe they should've made a really high-tech Spider-Man animation series, or...

It looks like Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is missing it's villain Arachne, according to The New York Times. T.V. Carpio, Natalie Mendoza's replacement, has suffered a neck injury during a recent preview performance of the $65 million Broadway show. Carpio received a neck injury during a climactic battle scene with Peter Parker.
This is the latest in a series of problems for the production. The show was recently delayed again and now writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and director Philip William McKinley have been brought in to get the show up for it's June 14 debut.
If this show ends up opening on June 14 I am willing to bet it will not stay open long. I personally think that they should stop the production now, before any more actors gret hurt. What are your thoughts on the news?

T.V. Carpio, who replaced Natalie Mendoza in the role of the villain Arachne, is the latest to be injured in a Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark preview performance. Mendoza left the show after being hit in the head by a rope, and Carpio suffered what The New York Times deemed a neck injury in a climactic battle scene with Peter Parker. This one was not a high-flying aerial sequence, at least. The latest in a litany of injuries happened while the show is being overhauled by incoming writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and director Philip William McKinley, in anticipation of a June 14 opening. Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been plagued from the start. Decried as ill-conceived, hackneyed, and a radical (and unneccessary) departure from source material beloved by the very people that should have been the core audience, there were some points of interest. An original score by U2's Bono and the Edge...promising. But most promising was the fact that the production would be directed by Julie Taymor: Oscar-nominated director of Frida and The Tempest, Taymor received both Laurence Olivier and Tony awards for her fantastic (and fantastical) work as a director and costume designer for the stage adaptation of The Lion King.
Today, TV news channel NY1 reports that sources close to Taymor have confirmed she will leave the production. The show was supposed to have its debut performance next Tuesday (delayed from the original scheduled debut in January), but may be delayed again as well, perhaps until as late as June.

"Things are constantly changing. It's a very creative process," T.V. Carpio told MTV News, explaining the seemingly ever-shifting nature of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."
For some observers on the outside looking in, that might come off as spin, an "it's all good" mentality meant to calm the public while inside the musical's playhouse, "Spider-Man" continues to struggle to find its creative footing. But to Carpio, it's all part of the inspirational process of working with Julie Taymor, the visionary behind the "Lion King" musical and films like 2007's "Across the Universe."
"You have to be down to jump, because Julie is always having these crazy visions," said Carpio, who took on the role of the villainess Arachne after the original actress left the production.
