- Despite fighting him, he is a very close friend of Muhammad Ali. The legendary boxer was the guest of honor at Inoki's retirement fight against Don Frye in 1998.

- Fought former world heavyweight Judo champion Willem Ruska four times and won every bout.
- Fought American Heavyweight Karate Champion Eddie "Monster" Everett on August 8th 1977 at Tokyo Budokan. Inoki won by KO at the fifth round.
- Defeated, under NHB rules, boxing champion Chuck Wepner by submission on October 25th 1977
- Fought, under NHB rules, Kyokushin Karate Champion Willie Williams on February 27th 1980. The violent fight ended to a draw. Inoki and Williams were both heavily injured after the bout.
- Was defeated, under NHB rules, by Jiu-Jitsuka Chota Chochoshvili at the Tokyo Dome on April 24th 1989. Inoki got a rematch one month later and won by submission.

- Converted to Islam at the Holy Site of Karbala, Iraq, in 1990. He kept his conversion secret until 2014, revealing his Muslim name as Muhammad Hussein Inoki.
