Held a clerical job with Mobil Oil before becoming an assistant trainee projectionist with the BBC. Worked his way up to cameraman, then left the BBC in 1968 to freelance.
Did two years of National Service with the RAF.
He began his career in lighting BBC TV dramas working with such as Tony Garnet and Ken Loach before moving into films he became a Director of Photography and his many credits his credits include Buster, Empire State, Wired and Shopping.
