Recently, after six days of program, this year’s Dortmund|Cologne International Women's Film Festival came to a close in Cologne’s Odeon Cinema with a presentation ceremony totalling four awards and €16,000 worth of prize money. Spanish director Neus Ballús won the €10,000 debut feature film competition, in which eight debuts were to be seen. In her film La Plaga (The Plague), she portrays five fascinating characters on the outskirts of Barcelona against the backdrop of rural Catalonia. It's a scorching hot summer and a plague of insects has ruined the harvest. Ms Ballús meticulously stages the daily routines of a cast played by non-professional actors, creating in the process an impressive piece of fiction which ultimately tells us a lot about Spain and Europe. Neus Ballús was present in Cologne to receive the prize personally.
Withotu a doubt, La Plaga succeeded in convincing the jury which consisted of Kim Yutani, curator of the Sundance Film Festival, Pelin Esmer, the Turkish director (10 to 11, Watchtover ) and Julia Hummer, the German actress (Ghosts, The State I Am In). The jury said: “ The film takes a profound philosophical approach and explores the cycle of life of five individuals you’ll never forget. Confidently and sensitively, the film-maker (...) directs the team of amateur actors while presenting a screenplay that weaves together the stories of the protagonist with subtle realism.”
Sponsored by Choices magazine, the €1,000 Audience Award Prize 2014 was awarded to Farewell, Herr Schwarz directed by Yael Reuveny. The film portrays two families in Israel and Germany who knew nothing of each other for years. Eligible here were all movies shown at the festival with a length of more than 60 minutes.
The winners of the National Competition for (Next Generation) Women Directors of Photography were announced in the run-up to the festival. The awards of €2,500 each were conferred Sunday evening to DoP Christiane Schmidt for her documentary The Forest Is Like The Mountains and DoP Bine Jankowski for her movie Rebecca. This jury comprised DoPs Sophie Maintigneux, Anne Misselwitz and Julia Daschner.
Festival Director Silke J. Räbiger was more than satisfied with the response to the festival programme. This year, in addition to the unique spectrum of films on offer, it featured a wide range of panel discussions, workshops and workshop discussions – all in high demand by festivalgoers. “The close collaboration with partners such as medica mondiale, Ladoc and Turkish Film Festival Ruhr has again proved a wonderful success. Together, we were able to put on a very impressive programme and reach a broad and highly interested audience."
The Country Focus: Turkey section shed new light on the Turkish film industry in particular and the current political situation in general and thus inspired much discussion among the audiences. The festival also notched up a huge success with its offerings for Cologne and Dortmund schools. Around 1,500 students attended the performances.
The next main festival programme is to be held in Dortmund in April 2015.

Taking place from April 8-13, the 31st edition of the Dortmund | Cologne International Women’s Film Festival will have it’s main program in the city of Cologne. A small selection will be seen in Dortmund as well. A total of 106 films from 37 countries will be screened and about 60 international filmmakers are going to be guests in Cologne. The festival will also be putting on a number of events that go beyond what a normal visit to the cinema has to offer. Events intended to spark a critical response to the medium of film via a number of formats – panel discussions, talks and workshops for cinema aficinados and film-makers alike.
Five Germany Premieres Compete for €10,000 Prize
A total of eight exceptional debut feature films will be screened in Cologne, having been short-listed from the 120 international film debuts of the last two years. Of that eight, the festival will present five of them as firsts for Germany – including, as the opening film, the award-winning tragicomedy The Amazing Catfish from Mexico. At the Cologne location of the Dortmund|Cologne International Women's Film Festival, the spotlight is always on the cinematic oeuvre of a particular region or country. This year, the encounter is with Turkey and its women filmmakers.
The Country Focus zooms in on the ongoing demonstrations and protest movements organized by Turkish citizens since the end of May 2013 against the authoritarian policies of the governing party in Turkey. The program thus sets out to analyze the concepts and definitions of home and identity and to examine to what extent current protests had already been anticipated there in the films of recent years.
Divided into ten programs the festival will present feature films, documentaries and short films from 2004 to 2013 as well as the historic feature film Dönüs (The Return 1972) by and with the great Turkish actress Türkan Soray.
Filmmakers and experts like Deniz Akçay, Pelin Esmer, Serpil Turhan, Rüya Arzu Köksal Kudu, Aysun Bademsoy, Lale Akgün, Mely Kiyak, Can Erdogan, Emel Celebi, Sedef Özge and Güliz Saglam will also be guests. Two panel discussions, a master class with Yeşim Ustaoğlu and the photo exhibition "Tarlabasi - On the Edge of Transformation"round off the programme as a whole.

Fiction, documentary, essay, avant-garde, experimental films and all the shorter formats: there are no formal restrictions on the Panorama Section and all lengths of movie are welcome. This year, 13 long films and 32 short to medium-length films are on view, including a good few premieres for Germany.
In the course of the selection process, it is the attitude of the women film-makers, the way they represent people in their films and the effect so generated that play an important role. Yet even though the Panorama section attempts to do full justice to the variety of artistic forms of expression, documentary and experimental films are given some priority. Among these are films like Perfect Garden by Mara Mattuschka, Touch by Shelly Silver, Noor by Cagla Zencirci, My Love Awaits Me By The Sea by Mais Darwazah and Rock the Casbah by Laïla Marrakchi and a film program & live performance by Jodie Mack, just to mention a few...

He's the archetypal drifter: a complete unknown with no direction home and little prospect of realising his folk-star dream, despite, or perhaps because of, his artistic integrity. The Coens let us know exactly how it feels. This is their most mature drama to date: subdued, sincere, bleakly funny, and as finely crafted as we've come to expect.

Answering the questions you didn’t know you had about how your parent’s parents, and for that matter, your grandparent’s parents were like when they were in their adolescence, Matt Wolf’s (Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell) docu-essay narrative film was one of the better items to be found in a paltry sampling of films I caught at this year’s Tribeca Film Fest edition. Teenage has found a taker in Oscilloscope Laboratories, who’ve picked up the film targeting more festival play and a 2014 release.

Oscilloscope Laboratories is feeling like a teenager again. The indie label founded by late Beastie Boy Adam Yauch said Thursday that it has acquired North American rights to "Teenage," a documentary look at the origins of youth culture. A loose adaptation of Jon Savage’s Teenage: The Creation of Youth 1875-1945, Wolf's cleverly constructed documentary is told by way of archival footage, seamlessly rendered reenactments and voiceover readings from diaries (by Jena Malone, Ben Whishaw, Julia Hummer, Jessie Usher). Wolf saturates Teenage with a lot of interesting information, but this is a documentary that will almost certainly leave you craving much more. The quick pacing and relatively short (77-minute) run-time lend Teenage the feeling of an extended teaser for a massive PBS series about this subject; or maybe it feels like an introductory chapter to a documentary about teenagers post-1945. I never imagined that I would want to learn so much more about the teenage existence, but Teenage convinces me that this is a subject that I need to know a lot more about.

One of the more intriguing works to be making their world premiere at Tribeca this month is New York based experimental documentarian Matt Wolf's "Teenage." The stylish doc blends archival footage with painstaking 16mm period recreations to tell the story of the birth of teenage culture, from the end of child labor laws to flappers and Nazi Youth. Narrated by Jena Malone, Ben Whishaw, Julia Hummer and Jessie Usher, and featuring a score from Deerhunter and Atlas Sound's Bradford Cox, Wolf's adaptation of Jon Savage's punk novel will premiere at Tribeca on April 20th. Tribeca Film Festival organizers on Wednesday announced 46 of the 89 feature films screening at the New York-set festival starting next month, including selections in the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film sections, as well as out-of-competition Viewpoints screenings.
"Big Men," a documentary about American corporations pursuing oil reserves in Africa, will serve as the opening night film for the World Documentary portion; "Bluebird," a small-town drama featuring "Girls" star Adam Driver, will kick-off the World Narrative slate. "Flex Is Kings," a documentary about Brooklyn street performers, is the Viewpoints opener. All three films premiere on April 18. It’s now been edited down to 165 minutes for worldwide cinematic release. It tells the story of Carlos the Jackal; one of the world’s most notorious terrorists, whose heyday ran from the mid-70s up until the end of the cold war. Born Ilich Ramírez Sánchez in Venezeula in 1949, Carlos was a committed and cold revolutionary who likened himself to Che Guevera, but who’s own personal war against capitalism and imperialism took in a more random and international selection of victims.

The first poster for Olivier Assayas‘ epic biopic Carlos, which will premiere in its full five-and-a-half-hour cut at Cannes Fest, about famed terrorist Carlos The Jackal has finally landed and we must admit that it really looks great. Take a look also at several Hi-Res photos from the movie below.

As we already wrote this is a three-part TV drama and that’s the reason why this movie isn’t In Competition, but we’re sure that this story about Venezuelan revolutionary, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez is more than interesting.
If you are lucky to be at Cannes right now, you can watch the premiere on Wednesday (May 19) at 12 Am, local time.

Olivier Assayas‘ Carlos will screen at this year’s Festival de Cannes! But, this movie wasn’t on the initial list of named films, and is not included In Competition!
Instead, it will be screened Out of Competition, due to the fact it is reportedly set to play on French cable network Canal+ and the Cannes committee didn’t want what appears to be a “TV movie” screening In Competition.
Interesting story of Venezuelan revolutionary, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, who founded a worldwide terrorist organization and raided the Opec headquarters in 1975 before being caught by the French police.

The eleventh and last part (W-z) of my extensive 2010 preview guide I'm still at work on and should be hitting the site either Tuesday or Wednesday. Before that though it is time to plug a few holes.
With release dates always in flux, there is no true definitive list of films opening this year as the number of titles change day-by-day and many aren't really locked in yet. As a result, there's definitely been some guesswork assembling this list, albeit carefully considered and researched to try and fit in what will come out, what's important enough, and what can be reasonably done.
However, there are always titles that slip through the cracks. Thankfully some ever vigilant readers have been keeping an eye out and sent in some suggestions of key projects I've missed. Not everything can be included of course, otherwise this list would take forever, but there are fourteen...

Ghosts
BERLIN -- Christian Petzold's "Ghosts", screened in competition, tracks two divergent story lines with the tantalizing possibility they might intersect at an interesting juncture. They do intersect, but this proves neither provocative nor exciting. Separately, each story line has little dramatic viability.
One story follows an obsessed, distraught woman, Francoise (Marianne Basler), who continually travels to Berlin from her Paris home to search forlornly for the daughter stolen from her years ago. Her understanding husband always comes to take her home.
In the other story, Nina (Julia Hummer), the product of numerous foster families and homes for troubled teens, falls in with an older street tough, Toni (Sabine Timoteo). The two wayward girls shoplift and snatch purses in an orgy of angry protest against an indifferent world. Petzold, who wrote the script with Harun Farocki, clearly suggests that Nina might be Francoise's long-lost daughter.
Without that suggestion, neither meandering, fragmented plot line holds much value. Even then, nothing can really excuse such aimless stories.
The acting isn't bad, but the location work makes Berlin, one of Europe's most exciting cities, looks blandly modern and soulless. A score of classical music gives "Ghosts" the air of a funeral.

FESTIVAL REVIEWS: The inaugural Made in Germany film festival, presented by the Export-Union of German Cinema, ran Nov. 3-9 at the Music Hall Theatre in Beverly Hills.
IN JULY
The well-liked opening film of the festival and a top 10 hit in Germany when it opened in late August, writer-director Fatih Akin's "In July", his second feature, is a fairly traditional romance in the guise of an offbeat road movie.
Moritz Bleibtreu of "Run Lola Run" plays tall, handsome and lovestruck Daniel. Unfortunately for the equally attractive and romantically inclined Juli, which is German for July and the month in which the story takes place, Daniel is not on a quest to win her heart.
The story begins in Hamburg, Germany, and features misadventures in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Physics professor Daniel tries to reach Istanbul, Turkey, for a rendezvous with a beautiful girl he's only seen once or twice. He picks up carefree Juli, played by Christiane Paul, as a traveling companion. The pair met earlier on the sidewalk, when he bought a ring from her. She has chosen him for his manly awkwardness and big heart. He's doesn't pay attention to her, but he can't get along without her.
Unpredictable in a few places and always watchable because of the charismatic duo of Bleibtreu and Paul, "In July" has a terrific soundtrack and a few magical cinematic moments that define true love and prove more effective than the usual mainstream approach.
THE STATE I AM IN
A strong role for up-and-coming actress Julia Hummer (who has a small but memorable part in "Gigantic"), "The State I Am In" is a tense coming-of-age drama about the rebellious daughter of rebellious parents.
Clara (Barbara Auer) and Hans (Richy Muller) are always saying that things will get better. With teenage daughter Jeanne (Hummer), they are hiding out on the coast of Portugal, waiting to move to Sao Paulo, Brazil, and assume new identities.
Although it's never clearly established what past crimes they are guilty of, Jeanne's mom and dad set out to rob a bank in Germany. While Jeanne is a knowing part of their plan, she increasingly resists their attempts to stop her from having a boyfriend. A surfer she meets on the beach, Heinrich (Bilge Bingul), says he's just a "McJobber who loves Brian Wilson," but Jeanne falls in love as best she can. Believably complicated and unable to escape participation in the bloody finale, she is scarred but still standing at the end of director Christian Petzold's tightly wound fourth feature.
FORGET AMERICA
Set mostly in the German town of Aschersleben, this semicomical romantic triangle finds David Marek Harloff) and Benno (Roman Knizka), two best friends who are stuck in a rut, both falling for Anna (Franziska Petri), a would-be actress from nearby Halle. The first solo feature from Munich-based director Vanessa Jopp, "Forget America" is fairly tame but involving. The screenplay by Maggie Peren certainly gives plenty of frustrating moments to lead character David, a photographer who initially lets Benno get the upper hand and spends the rest of the movie regretting it.
The three actors are engagingly attuned to the young and moderately reckless milieu, which includes Benno's business selling vintage American cars and David's dingy life at home with a skinhead younger brother and disabled father. Anna comes in and out of their lives, spending most of her energy on violently emotional Benno while giving David discouraging signals over his obvious infatuation with her. All three unexpectedly underachieve in their dream careers. In the resulting tension, Benno starts to self-destruct, causing Anna to drift toward David.
GIGANTIC
Co-produced by Tom Tykwer ("Run Lola Run") and directed by one of the actors in that film, Sebastian Schipper, "Gigantic" is an X Filme Creative Pool production that bowed stateside at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. A bit loopy in the storytelling department -- a lot of comedy, adventure and drama is packed into the film's one long night -- "Gigantic" is satisfying enough to interest festival audiences. The character-driven piece follows three male friends in Hamburg, Germany. One of the friends is leaving for faraway places and probably is never coming back.
Walter (Antoine Monot Jr.) owns a big muscle car that transports him and pals Ricco (Florian Lukas) and Floyd (Frank Giering) on a round of adventuring that includes several run-ins with a troupe of angry, Elvis-themed circus performers. Ricco is the noisy daredevil of the group, but reliable Walter and gloomy Floyd -- the one leaving -- are not ones to walk away from a challenge.
They get their wish to experience "gigantic" things when a high-stakes Foosball game with a formidable opponent named Snake goes their way. The game is a lengthy, imaginatively executed sequence. The melancholy sentiments of the night climax when their underage, party-girl companion Telsa (Julia Hummer) almost dies from alcohol poisoning.
