The year 2023 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to animation. Movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became massive commercial successes and crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, while movies like “Nimona” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” hit big with audiences and critics. There were films that boasted wildly different aesthetics and showed the power of the animation medium, like “Blue Giant” and “The First Slam Dunk.” We also saw the return of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, who gave us his most personal film to date with “The Boy and the Heron.”
That’s a lot for 2024 to live up to — luckily, it seems the year will bring with it a healthy mix of big studio franchises and more grown-up animated fare. There are still big and highly anticipated animated movies slated to be released in 2024. Here is a rundown of 2024 animated releases with updates to come.

Just like with almost every other 2024 film, I didn’t know much about The Tiger’s Apprentice. In fact, besides the fact that it had a tiger, I really didn’t know anything else about it. Therefore, I was surprised to see a cast boasting the likes of Henry Golding (The Gentlemen), Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Sandra Oh (Quiz Lady), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as talented screenwriters like David Magee (The Little Mermaid) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Director Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) was the ‘wildcard’ I was unfamiliar with, so overall, I held no expectations whatsoever.
The Tiger’s Apprentice follows the well-covered, formulaic path of a young protagonist discovering a family secret and bearing it against some sort of antagonist. In this particular case, Tom (Brandon Soo Hoo), a Chinese American boy living in San Francisco, is the latest in a...

With the film industry as a whole taking a significant hit during the early years of the pandemic, one progressive change that has been stifled for the past couple years is studios hiring more directors from underrepresented backgrounds.
There are all sorts of data points repeated over the years by annual studies, like USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which has repeatedly revealed how increasing diversity within filmmaking helps, not harms, business prospects. For example, the latest USC study shared that films by underrepresented directors earned marginally higher Metacritic scores than movies from white directors, and yet 2022 had a 6.6 percent decline in the number of the directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups who helmed the top 100 films of the year.
Though the upcoming slate of studio films does not seem like it will move the needle even back to 2021 numbers, where the percentage of directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups reached a 15-year high,...

2018 is halfway over already, so now is a good moment to cast our eyes back over the last six months, and more specifically, the cinematic offerings that emerged from Asia. Traditionally the first half of the year tends to be weaker, and certainly most of the Chinese New Year offerings left plenty to be desired. Chen Kaige's Legend of the Demon Cat, Raman Hui's Monster Hunt 2, Soi Cheang's The Monkey King 3 and Chen Sicheng's Detective Chinatown 2 all managed to underwhelm, while the endless barrage of sub-par Japanese and Korean dramas and thrillers was as relentless as it was soul-crushing. That said, Korean offerings like Little Forest, Be With You and I Can Speak weren’t bad at all, while Colour...

Bai Baihe and Jing Boran reprise their roles as Wuba’s adoptive human parents, with their reunion proving the ultimate goal in this family-focused fantasy adventure. It's fitting that Monster Hunt 2 was slated to open on Lunar New Year. Just like the invariably sweet or deep-fried snacks being devoured at nearly every Chinese household during this festive period, Hong Kong director Raman Hui's second entry of his SFX-heavy franchise is high on sensations and low on substance. While the film is a much more powerful visual feast than the original Monster Hunt from two years ago, it offers little in terms of expanding the first film's themes or pushing the storyline significantly forward.

On the eve of the Chinese fantasy film Monster Hunt's release in 2015, the film's director, Raman Hui, was terrified. After more than 20 years in Hollywood — much of it spent working for DreamWorks Animation as a senior animator and director (he co-helmed Shrek the Third) — Hui had returned to his hometown of Hong Kong to make his live-action directorial debut for legendary local producer Bill Kong and his Edko Films.
“Bill took this big risk to make my first live-action film, and I was so scared he wouldn’t get his money back,” Hui says.

Last week we heard that Tony Leung Chiu-wai had joined the cast of Monster Hunt 2 and now we have visual proof, via a new poster and the first teaser for the film. Running just 39 seconds, it features returning players, lovable creatures and Tony Leung speaking English and wearing modern-day clothing. We're not sure why ... yet. Raman Hui has returned as director of the live-action/CGI adventure, which is once again aimed at families. The original, which is available to watch on Netflix, is a sprightly adventure that is quite fun to watch, and has far more complex action sequences than I'd expected. Here's hoping for more of the same in the sequel. Watch the first teaser below....

On its face, Raman Hui's 18th century short story adaptation, Monster Hunt, may seem like a kids' movie not worth all the hype. That said, if that's the basis for your abstinence from seeing it either this year or last year, you couldn't be more wrong and its status as China's highest grossing film of all time notwithstanding, the film tells one of the most heartfelt, exciting and compelling stories you'll ever see on screen and with fun action sequences to boot as well from a script by Hui and co-scribe Alan Yuen. This, plus the CG fare and adorable creature lore, should bode well for anyone simply looking for something fun to watch be it a family affair or not, and it's definitely worth...

Controversial , low-budget dystopian Ten Years took the top honors at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday.
A local box office hit made up of five vignettes set in 2025, where locals are persecuted for speaking Cantonese not Mandarin.
Amidst increasing fears of mainland pressure and interference in Hong Kong and some cinemas refusing to screen the film, its success was a surprise even to the producers themselves.
Andrew Choi, one of the producers for the film, said “The meaning of this prize is that it shows Hong Kong still has hope. It reminds us that we could have courage to be creative. I would like to thank everyone who has watched it.”
According to the Guardian, this film with a budget of Hk$500,000 ($64,000) has earned Hk$6m, but its run stopped despite still playing to packed theatres.

Even if Monster Hunt were billed in America with “from Raman Hui, the supervising animator of everyone’s favorite DreamWorks player, the Gingerbread Man, and co-director of Shrek the Third, comes a magical adventure of man and beast” on the posters, it wouldn’t be enough. But that’s okay, because Hui didn’t make it for American audiences. Instead, it stemmed from a desire back in 2005 to make an animated film in China after spending so much time with Steven Spielberg‘s company learning the ropes. A decade later and the finished live-action-animated hybrid became the nation’s highest-grossing film ever (since beaten by Stephen Chow‘s The Mermaid). Not even the boast of this acclaim could make it a winner stateside, though. It’s simply too weird for western audiences.
That doesn’t mean it’s bad or indecipherable. Hui utilizes many of the same themes from the...
