Co-written by Huang and Besson, Weekend in Taipei follows John Lawlor, a pit-bull DEA agent married to his job. There’s not a bad guy he can’t stop, nothing he won’t sacrifice to close out a case. British singer-actor Luke Evans and Taiwanese female actor Gwei Lun-mei will co-star in “Weekend Escape Project,” an action thriller being produced in Taiwan by EuropaCorp.
The film marks a further comeback for EuropaCorp after a four-year hiatus that followed the personal travails of its founder, Luc Besson, and financial difficulties at the company. EuropaCorp was taken over by its junior lender, Vine Alternative Investments, in 2020, as part of a restructuring deal.
Besson and Virginie Besson-Silla are producing the movie for EuropaCorp. Kinology is handling international sales.
Directed by George Huang, the film (aka “Weekend in Taipei”) is set to start shooting on July 3 in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital. Production is expected to take three months and take in locations including the Ximending district, Zhongshan Hall, the Dome and Taipei City Hall.
In February, Besson-Silla scouted locations for the film with director Olivier Megaton (“Transporter 3”) and met with Taipei mayor Wayne Chiang.

Lewis R. “Lew” Hunter, a screenwriting professor at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (Tft) who taught many celebrated Hollywood screenwriters, including Michael Colleary, Alexander Payne and Michael Werb, died Jan. 6 at a care facility in Arizona from Covid-19. He was 87.
Hunter was a professor emeritus at UCLA, where he began teaching in 1979 and helped helm the university’s graduate Ftv 434 course, a methodical guide to writing a full-length screenplay in 10 weeks. He was named co-head of the screenwriting program in 1988, a title he held until his retirement in 2000.
“I never had the pleasure or privilege of meeting Lew Hunter, but his presence is deeply felt in the screenwriting program and his signature 434 workshop,” said screenwriting professor George Huang, who currently teaches the class, in a statement. “The idea that students have to finish a full-length feature screenplay in the 10 weeks of a quarter still seems revolutionary even today,...

With the majority of prestige television being released on streaming services and cable networks with no content restrictions, nudity from famous actors and actresses has become commonplace. To many, it is no longer shocking to see their favorite stars strip down on screen. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be daunting for the performers themselves.
Diane Kruger, who stars in the new television remake of “Swimming with Sharks” on the Roku Channel, recently opened up about her experience filming nude scenes on the show. In an interview with Insider, Kruger said she was extremely hesitant about doing nudity. As an actress, her approach is generally to avoid nude scenes unless there is a specific artistic justification.
“The motivation behind sex scenes has to be a good one. I don’t agree with just getting naked on screen or doing stuff like that,” Kruger said. “So I was pretty...

Backstabbing. Ruthless. Two-faced. Revenge.
Those words appear in a towering font on the poster for the 1994 film “Swimming With Sharks,” behind an image of (now disgraced) actor Kevin Spacey screaming directly into the face of his co-star, Frank Whaley. The film gave audiences an unflinching look at Hollywood’s workplace culture — as it was then, before current efforts to eradicate toxic and inexcusable behavior.
Verbal and physical abuse, staplers and phones hurled at employees, 20-hour workdays, sexual harassment and rampant degradation all play out in the film, which was reportedly based on writer-director George Huang’s experiences under producers Joel Silver and Scott Rudin. “Swimming With Sharks” has become a touchstone for industry survivors, and Roku will unveil a TV series adaptation of the film on April 15.
In the nearly two decades since it was released, a subgenre has sprung up surrounding these backlot stories, especially in the post-#MeToo era.

“You have no brain. No judgement calls are necessary. What you think means nothing. What you feel means nothing. You are here for me. You are here to protect my interests and to serve my needs.”
That’s the iconic line spewed by a toxic movie producer to his rattled assistant in “Swimming With Sharks,” the 1994 George Huang film. Within the industry, the movie has been referenced as hyperrealistic and the subject of many inside jokes. Today, however, Variety can exclusively reveal the first trailer for a full-stop reboot of the property from creator Kathleen Robertson.
A flagship original from Roku, the current “Swimming With Sharks” brings two forces to be reckoned with in Diane Kruger, the take-no-prisoners studio chief, and Kiernan Shipka, her cunning intern who will stop at nothing to become her professional idol. If stories about Hollywood have taught us anything, it's that Tinseltown has a dark side. Movies from "Sunset Boulevard" to "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood" have proven that the glitz and glamour aren't all they seem, but we can't help returning for more behind-the-scenes peeks. If the allure of Hollywood stories still calls out to you, yet another dark drama is stepping up to unpack the industry's darkness. "Swimming with Sharks" is an adaptation of George Huang's 1994 film of the same name, telling the story of a Hollywood assistant who turns the tables on an abusive boss.

Quibi is adding another reboot to its roster of originals — this one an update of cult 1990s movie Swimming With Sharks.
The shortform streamer has given a series order to a drama from Lionsgate based on George Huang's 1994 film about a Hollywood assistant (Frank Whaley) who turns the tables on his abusive boss (Kevin Spacey). The new version will follow a young female assistant at the center of a studio filled with manipulators and schemers — none of whom know she's poised to outwit them all.

WGA West presidential candidate Phyllis Nagy has gotten out in front a series of anonymous critics of her teaching methods and track record as head of the UCLA screenwriting program. Following inquiries from Deadline that were fueled by interviews with a dozen former students and faculty members, Nagy has addressed allegations that her methods can be divisive and polarizing.
None of the students Deadline interviewed would speak for the the record, so it is difficult to bare some of the specifics of their complaints. But there is a common theme in their criticism of Nagy’s teaching style. “It was a divisive atmosphere,” said a former student in the screenwriting program. “Many students have had incredibly difficult experiences.” The former students said they would not speak for the record for fear it might haunt them in their writing careers. “People are fearful. They have fear for their careers if they speak up.

If time heals all wounds, Law & Order: Svu‘s Peter Stone is screwed.
Only a few months will have passed between the events of the Season 19 finale and the two-hour Season 20 premiere (Thursday, Sept. 27 at 9/8c), show boss Michael Chernuchin tells TVLine. That means the assistant district attorney will be in the thick of his grief over his sister’s murder when next we see him. And how is he handling it?
“Not well,” Chernuchin says.
Viewers will recall that Stone’s sibling Pamela was killed by cartel baddie Diego Diaz in the season-ender; she took her final breaths in her brother’s arms.

Take one classic 90s action movie, featuring one of the most iconic action heroes of the decade and directed by a king of the genre. Throw in a two-decade wait and a British action star who is almost single-handedly keeping the old-school Dtv vibe alive (and doing a damn good job of it may I add); and you have Hard Target 2.
Twenty-three years. Has it really been that long? I remember the hype around John Woo’s Hard Target – you couldn’t pick up an issue of Impact Magazine for a least a year beforehand without some mention of the film amongst its pages. It’s actually very surprising that we didn’t get a sequel sooner.

For years, gentle TV viewers knew Bd Wong as the warm and empathetic Dr. George Huang from Law & Order: Svu. Now Wong will upend those model-minority notions in a recurring role as evil Arkham psychiatrist Dr. Hugo Strange, a part that requires him to sport a glue-on beard that is giving us shivers of Antm Cycle 21 face-merkin realness. When Gotham returns February 29, he'll cross paths with Penguin, who will be one of his latest patients. This is another potentially delicious part for Wong, who stole the scene in less than four minutes last summer as the mysterious hacker White Rose in Mr. Robot.

Benicio Del Toro is a pretty singular talent in the industry, so it’s never a surprise when he does worth worthy of being honored. This year, the 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards have seen fit to bestow upon him the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award for his performance in Sicario. Of course, Del Toro more or less stole that film, so it’s a totally viable honor. He’s going to be in play for an Oscar nod in Best Supporting Actor, but regardless of if that nom happens or not, this shows how he’s still crafting memorable supporting characters. That’s always been Del Toro’s bread and butter, so this is just a perfect citation for him… Here’s part of the press release once again announcing this honor: dick clark productions announced that Academy Award-winning actor Benicio Del Toro will receive the “Hollywood Supporting Actor Award” for Sicario.

Stars: Nicolas Hoult, Craig Roberts, James Corden, Tom Riley, Joseph Mawle, Georgia King, Ed Skrein, Jim Piddock | Written by John Niven | Directed by Owen Harris
Kill Your Friends is adapted from John Niven’s 2009 novel. It’s a late Nineties black comedy about the last hurrahs of post-Britpop record labels before the internet came along and devalued everything they’d built their expense accounts on. The book is to the music industry what Brett Easton Ellis’s American Psycho is to Wall Street. In so much that taking a life can be justified if winning is all and losing will get your fired.
Leading the film is Nicholas Hoult. He plays Stelfox – the ruthless and ambitious record company executive that lacks any morals or love of music. He simply craves success. Paradoxically, this has served him well to date, but the lack of a work ethic or plan is catching up with him.

In the criminal justice system, episodes of Law & Order: Svu without B.D. Wong are considered especially heinous.
Fortunately, Wong will appear in a November sweeps installment of the NBC drama’s 17th season, reprising his role as Dr. George Huang, TVGuide.com reports.

Wong’s episode will revisit the case from Svu‘s 300th hour, in which Benson solved a child abduction that had haunted her for more than 10 years. Dr. Huang will be called to testify in Lewis Hodda’s (Tom Sizemore) long-awaited trial — but he’ll be a witness for the defense.

Law & Order: Svu has been home to many great characters, from Elliot Stabler to Olivia Benson and everybody in between, but over its 17 seasons, Svu has been home to only one Lgbt series regular character. B.D. Wong was the show's only out Lgbt character when he portrayed George Huang as a series regular from seasons four through 12. He also appeared in seasons two, three, 13, 14 and 15. The show regularly has Lgbt characters come in and out of its crosshairs, notably in the episode airing tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 30, but there has never been an out Lgbt main hero cop or Da. Isn't it about time that changes? You betcha, according to series stars Peter Scanavino and Raúl Esparza. Scanavino, the...

It's currently being reported that Steve Martin will be reprising his role as cynical businessman George Banks in Father of the Bride 3.
Martin is tipped to return alongside Diane Keaton as wife Nina Banks in the comedy, which will see the couple's son Matty revealing his plans to marry the son of a Us Navy Seal.
1991's Father of the Bride was based on the 1950 movie of the same, while 1995's sequel was loosely based on 1951's Father's Little Dividend.
As we anticipate a potential Part III, catch up on the major stars' exploits since - and compare how they looked then and now:

Steve Martin - already an established Hollywood name before Father of the Bride - plays hapless patriarch George Banks, who suffers a series of ridiculous misfortunes (and a mild breakdown - the too-plentiful pack of hotdogs springs to mind) after his daughter announces that she's getting married.

Whilst sitting down and having a fairly open chat with IGN recently 'Jurassic World' director Colin Trevorrow ('Safety Not Guaranteed') revealed that one of the members of the original 'Jurassic Park' cast would be reappearing in his new upcoming sequel. Actor Bd Wong, better known to many as George Huang in NBC's 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit', will reprise his rather brief role as Dr. Henry Wu in Steven Spielberg's original monster masterpiece. The director also mentioned some key new information regarding the roles of cast memebrs Bryce Dallas Howard ('The Village') and Chris Pratt ('Parks and Recreation'). Howard's character 'starts off very corporate, very controlled. Until the running and screaming starts', whilst Pratt is set to play 'a classic hero in a very modern context...' and '...an expert in a scientific field' that's connected to the story.

Here are 25 more great, unsung films - this time, from the year 1994...
Yes, 1994. The year cinemas were dominated by such whimsical wonders as The Lion King, Forrest Gump, The Mask and, erm, True Lies. It was also the year Gump dominated the Academy Awards, and Four Weddings And A Funeral loomed large at the Baftas.
As ever, there was so much more to the year's cinematic landscape than Tom Hanks' park bench ramblings or Hugh Grant mithering from beneath his gorgously crafted hair. To prove it, here's a list of 25 films that, in our estimation, are among its most underappreciated. There's much horror, drama, tears and laughter, plus a couple of classic documentaries, too.
25. Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead
The Phantasm series was quite unusual, in that writer and director Don Coscarelli made all four of them. This means that,...

Each week we look at the best films and TV available on the various streaming and VOD services available. Here are our picks for this week.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Directed by: Christopher Nolan.
Available on Now TV.
The weird quick turnaround time-lapse between hyperbole and backlash that we have seen plague our blockbusters this summer can be traced back to this film. As a follow-up to The Dark Knight, it is a disappointment but it’s still a fitting finale and is definitely on a par with Batman Begins. A lot of the problems this film had on release have to do with it coming so soon after The Avengers. The Dark Knight Rises is epic filmmaking and has many breath-taking sequences in its own right; it just doesn’t have four superheroes fighting aliens. Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle...

It would seem Ethan Cutkosky is finding himself on the verge of being typecast as a psychopathic child. Currently known for playing Carl Gallagher on Shameless, a character with a violent streak at school and who occasionally brings small animals home to kill them, Cutkosky has been tapped to guest star in an upcoming episode of Law & Order: Svu that will focus on troubled children. Cutkosky will play just such a child. He’s still a young actor, but apparently he plays violent children well enough to be asked to do so on more than one occasion. I sincerely hope Cutkosky is a bundle of joy in real life.
Known for taking its plots straight for newspaper headlines, the episode Cutkosky appears in no doubt inspired by the various mass shootings that have taken place over the last year, particularly those in Aurora, Colo. And Newton, Conn. TV Guide reported...

Svu always has some creepy facts that increase our knowledge of the appalling world of sex crimes. And this week, it was genetic sexual attraction (Gsa), a condition that causes people to be sexually attracted to parents, siblings and other family members if they are separated at a young age.
Gross!
The topic is pretty taboo and, in fact, was explored in the aptly titled episode "Taboo" during the show's seventh season. In that episode, Ella Christiansen reconnected with her long-lost father and literally started making babies with him, abandoning her newborn in the trash.
"Father Dearest" may have tread some familiar territory, but it definitely added a much more menacing father-figure with James Van Der Beek's Sean. Unlike Ella's father, Sean purposefully sought out these girls for one reason: revenge.

Is it true that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely? Well the movies often tell us that that is the case and to celebrate the release of Bad Teacher on DVD and Blu-ray this week we’ve drawn together a list of what must be one of the most enduring screen roles – the bad authority figure.
1) Eva, We Need To Talk About Kevin (Tilda Swinton)
Lynne Ramsay’s staggering adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s novel sticks in the mind like an ice-pick. Not least for Tilda Swinton’s mesmerising performance of an unwanting mother who stands by a pneumatic drill to relieve the jarring noise of her child’s cries or wallpapers her room with maps to escape vicariously through the promised adventures they hold. The eternal question of nature or nurture plays out across this powerful work but either way the blame seems to rest at the feet...

B.D. Wong not returning for next season of 'Law & Order: Svu.' Who should play the new psychiatrist?
Season 13 of Law & Order: Svu is turning into season 10 of American Idol: Attack of the Newbies.
Almost two months after Christopher Meloni announced he’d be leaving the long-running procedural next season and the announcement that two new agents — played by Kelly Giddish and Danny Pino — would be joining Mariska Hargitay on the show, B.D. Wong announced via Twitter this weekend that his character would not be returning for season 13. NBC confirmed the news to EW.
While Wong has plenty to keep him busy following the departure — he’ll co-star on NBC’s midseason show, Awake — Svu apparently has a void to fill.

Wong, who has played Dr. George Huang on the Law & Order spin-off for the past 11 years, took to Twitter.com at the weekend (16-17Jul11) to announce his departure.
He wrote, "I actually do not return for season 13 of @nbcsvu #Svu! i am jumping to @nbcAwake #Awake!"
The news comes less than a month after actor Christopher Meloni announced he would be hanging up his TV cop badge after 12 years on the show.
