What if crisis-whammies Nordic drama producers would now tap into other European stories instead of staying in the Nordic bubble and self-sufficient eco-system of mixed national and regional private and public coin? Would it be payback time for European partners who until now have bought into the Nordic Noir, without some form of reciprocity?
The question was raised by Belgium producer Helen Perquy from Banijay Benelux’s Jonnydepony at this week’s Göteborg TV Drama Vision, at a panel which looked into the current Nordic drama production mayhem and possible solutions.
“In Belgium, we do have soft money, tax shelters, Vaf [Flanders Audiovisual Fund], Screen Flanders but you guys in the Nordics have had way more money from broadcasters and global streamers, while we’ve had to be creative [with our financing],” said Perquy.
“For years we’ve watched your series and films, they’ve been up there,” noted the producer, raising her arm up in the air.

Finland unveiled six upcoming shows at Mipcom, with thrillers continuing to be relevant but Nordic Noir taking a back seat.
The showcase, organized by Audiovisual Producers Finland – Apfi partnering up with Yle, Finnish Film Foundation, Elisa Viihde and Film in Finland, spotlighted a thriller about a data leak, “cosy” crime series and even animation inspired by unboxing videos.
Aurora Studios is developing “Sunset Grove” with Elisa Viihde, described as a “feel-good crime story.” The shoot will start in September next year.
Through eight episodes, made in co-production with Fire Monkey, it will follow three elderly ladies from different backgrounds as they settle in a retirement home “where growing old is the least of your problems.”
Soon, they will have to turn into “Sherlocks in support tights,” said producer Severi Koivusalo, and team up to solve a crime.
“I am in my thirties and I don’t usually fantasize about retirement homes.

Leading Norwegian company Maipo is developing “Fortress,” an ambitious dystopian thriller, and is preparing the second season of “State of Happiness” (“Lykkeland”), the historical series which is competing this week at Canneseries.
“Fortress” is created and penned by two high-profile Norwegian screenwriters: John Kåre Raake, whose track record includes Nordic blockbusters such as “The Wave,” Roar Uthaug’s disaster movie, and “Ragnarok, a family film based on Viking mythology;” and Linn-Jeanethe Kyed, who notably co-wrote “Børning” and “Børning 2,” a action-comedy movie franchise set in the world of illegal sports car racing, and Benjamin Ree’s critically acclaimed documentary feature about the Norwegian chess prodigy, Magnus Carlsen.
“Fortress” takes place in a near future in Norway which is now secluded from the rest of the world by a wall built by the nationalistic government. Norwegians live in absolute sovereignty, relying only on their own homegrown resources and caring solely about national affairs.

Chris Ball and his team have acquired Us rights to Liv Ullmann’s recent Toronto world premiere starring Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton.
Ulmann wrote Miss Julie based on the play by August Strindberg about a troubled noblewoman in late 19th century Ireland who over the course of one midsummer night attempts to seduce her father’s valet.
Synnøve Hørsdal, Oliver Dungey and Teun Hilte produced the film.
Wrekin Hill negotiated the deal with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers and has set a December theatrical release. Wild Bunch handles international sales.

Miss Julie
Director: Liv Ullmann
Writer: Liv Ullmann
Producers: Tristan Orpen Lynch, Aoife O’Sullivan, Teun Hilte, Oliver Dungey, Synnøve Hørsdal
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Jessica Chastian, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton
While IFC Films/Sundance Selects will hopefully release Two Lives sometime this year, an excellent German film in which Liv Ullmann stars, we’re even more excited to see her return to the director’s seat for the first time in fourteen years with this adaptation of Strindberg’s theater staple. There are several other film versions out there, perhaps most famously is Alf Sjoberg’s 1951 treatment. But with leading ladies like Chastain and the sublime Samantha Morton, this is destined to be one of the year’s most welcome re-interpretations.
Gist: Over the course of a midsummer night in Fermanagh in 1890, an unsettled daughter of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy encourages her father’s valet to seduce her.

Homesick
Director: Anne Sewitsky
Writer: Ragnhild Tronvoll
Producer: Maipo Film’s Synnøve Hørsdal
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: None announced.
After winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2010 for her debut feature, Happy, Happy, Norwegian director Anne Sewitsky followed up with a children’s film a year later, Totally True Love. Now, she’s back with her third feature, scripted by Happy scribe Tornvoll. We’re excited to see her latest, which is apparently all about “family, belonging, and destructive love.”
Gist: Charlotte has found a new home with her boyfriend Dag and best friend Martha’s family, when she learns that she has a 10-year-younger brother; they meet, and her life is changed.
Release Date: We’re thinking this will show up at fall festival, though her major win at Sundance could very well see Sewitsky push this to Berlin or Sundance 2015.
