Film industry players gathered at Mr. Nakamoto at the Mondrian hotel in Cannes on Monday night to celebrate Universal Pictures International.
As Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh pointed out in his opening remarks, Universal had several big successes this past year, not the least of which was Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which took home seven Oscars. The studio also produced box office hits “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “M3GAN” and “Cocaine Bear,” and is promising a victory lap this year with “The Bikeriders,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Twisters” and “Wicked” on the lineup.
For this reason, Universal Pictures International was awarded Variety‘s international achievement in film award, which was accepted by the company’s president of distribution — international Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.

NBA star Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media production label have signed a sweeping, first-of-its-kind talent deal with Comcast NBCUniversal.
The multi-year template agreement is billed as the media giant’s first-ever “global talent partnership.” It counts a dizzying amount of first-look development opportunities across the company, including: Universal Studio Group for scripted and unscripted TV projects; DreamWorks Animation for kids and family content; creative and on-camera contributions at NBC Sports; opportunities at NBC News Studios, MSNBC and CNBC; Universal Parks and Resorts; and Comcast’s Xfinity brand.
Insiders valued the deal in the high eight-figure range with a potential upside from producing fees on greenlit content. The agreement was brokered by Jimmy Horowitz, vice chairman of NBCUniversal business affairs and operations. WME represented Curry and Unanimous.

Back in December it was revealed that David Gordon Green (the director behind the new Halloween trilogy) was in discussions to helm a sequel to William Friedkin's The Exorcist (based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name), and now that news has been confirmed with the official announcement that Universal and Peacock have teamed up with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek for a new Exorcist film trilogy that continues the story of the iconic 1973 possession film and will bring back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil.
The first film in the new Exorcist trilogy will be directed by David Gordon Green and is slated for an October 13th, 2023 theatrical release. In addition to Burstyn, Leslie Odom Jr. will also star in the new movie.

Universal is shelling out an eye-popping $400 million to buy a new “Exorcist” trilogy with plans to screen some of the films on Peacock, its new streaming service. In a coup, Ellen Burstyn, the Oscar-winning actress who first did battle with the devil in the 1973 original, will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil.
David Gordon Green, the filmmaker of the studio’s latest “Halloween” reboot, is directing the upcoming “Exorcist” franchise, which will be produced by Blumhouse. In an ironic twist, Blumhouse made a name for itself producing low-budget horror hits like “Get Out” and “The Purge,” which enjoyed capacious profit margins due to their paltry costs. Streaming has scrambled those economics.
The pact is the latest in a long line of massive deals for movies signed by streaming services. It follows the more than $450 million that Netflix shelled out for the rights to two “Knives Out” sequels, as well as...

Los Angeles — New mom Reese Witherspoon is being honored by March of Dimes for being a model celebrity parent.
The 36-year-old Oscar winner and mother of three will receive the organization's Grace Kelly Award at its Celebration of Babies event Friday at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The award recognizes celebrity parents committed to healthy pregnancies and families.
Witherspoon gave birth in September to a son, Tennessee, with her husband, talent agent Jim Toth. She's also mom to Ava, 13, and Deacon, 8, from her previous marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe.
"I was very lucky to have a healthy delivery and leave the hospital with a healthy full term infant, but so many families in this country do not get that experience," she said, adding that she hopes her involvement with March of Dimes calls attention to its efforts to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

A top exec from Universal had some bad news for the talent attorneys sharing the dais.
"There was a time, maybe only five years ago, when there were a lot of stars who could open a big movie, but today you could count them on one hand," Universal Pictures co-president Jimmy Horowitz said Friday. "So we just can't afford to (pay talent) the way we once did."
Studio execs and talent reps jousted before a packed house at UCLA's McGowan Hall to open the 31st annual UCLA Law School Entertainment Symposium.
Sure, big-name talent still manages to wrangle megabucks deals, but the terms often are quite different than the recent past, Horowitz said. Studios are resisting giving backend compensation with first-dollar gross except for the most sought-after actors and directors, he said.
Such pullbacks follow repeated instances in which overly lucrative backend deals hurt studios, said moderator and former Paramount executive E. Barry Haldeman, currently of the law firm Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaro.
"I saw at Paramount (that) very often the talent would make more money than the studio," Haldeman said.
Paramount Vantage executive vp Jeffrey Freedman, said the studio's specialty unit commonly uses backend terms to compensate marquee talent it wants to attract to its lower-budgeted pictures. But the unit almost never gives away lucrative terms like first-dollar gross, which could see talent getting paid a percentage of revenue even before the studio is assured of breaking even on a release, Freedman said.
