- His freshman year roommate at Dartmouth was Stephen Geller, the screenwriter of Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) and The Valachi Papers (1972).

- Had written a number of screenplays that were sadly never produced, including a script he had written for Roger Corman in 1980 called "Disc Jockey".

- Had moved to Livingston, MT in 1971 after graduating from Dartmouth University. He became great friends with fellow residents Warren Oates, Jimmy Buffett, and Thomas McGuane.
- He was the long suffering neighbor of author Richard Brautigan (about whom he wrote an extensive biography-Jubilee Hitchhiker) who often came to the Hjortaberg home drunk.
