A franchise that’s producing as much as “Star Trek” is right now shouldn’t be this good.
A year ago, “Strange New Worlds” debuted and delivered the best first season of a “Trek” show since “The Original Series.” Then “Picard” ended on a soaring and soulful note, leaving fans desperate for more. And now “Strange New Worlds” is back for Season 2, delivering the kind of character-driven episodic sci-fi that now seems downright revolutionary in the serialized streaming era.
Each one of these has been better than the last.
Somehow franchise overlord Alex Kurtzman has unlocked the secret to both quantity and quality, something which has eluded that other space-bound saga in its own streaming era. He seems to have done it by simply trusting his showrunners: Terry Matalas for “Picard” and Akiva Goldsman (never better) and Henry Alonso Myers for “Strange New Worlds.”
The result, in “Strange New Worlds...

Showtime has given the last word on The L Word: Generation Q, canceling the drama after three seasons. According to Deadline, Showtime declined to renew the show but is developing another offshoot of the franchise, tentatively titled The L Word: New York, with the help of co-creator Ilene Chaiken. The cancellation isn’t a total surprise: As Deadline notes, Showtime hasn’t renewed a single series since the announcement this January that Showtime would rebrand as Paramount+ with Showtime as part of an integration with the Paramount+ streaming service. Showtime previously canceled Let The Right One In and American Gigolo, while the upcoming series Three Women and Ripley moved to other outlets. Kharen Hill/Showtime Chris McCarthy, the CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, name-dropped the L Word franchise in December when he announced his plan “to lean into Showtime’s strengths” and cited three key areas for the...

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

It’s Continuum finale day, and along with a quick sneak peek, I have an interview for you. The show has been exciting all season long, and I have to admit that some of these Syfy endeavors (like Lost Girl) are among my favorite shows. Perhaps not the absolutely deepest things television has to offer, but they’re a lot of fun, and I don’t miss them.
Below find coverage from a press call with stars Rachel Nichols and Victor Webster, along with Executive Producer Simon Barry. You’ll get some teases about the next season, and some deeper elements of the show came to light.
What’s you take on this one? Are you watching?
Do you have any particular favorite moments from this past season that you would like to talk about?
Rachel Nichols: Okay I’ll jump in.
Simon Barry: You jump in.

Fringe has been an absolute miracle of a sci-fi show since its debut. The fact that it lasted to its fifth season is also a testament to its loyal and tenacious fanbase that followed it from timeslot to timeslot and even to the dreaded Friday nights. In fact, “Fringe Fridays” became a destination for fans every Friday night last year. Thus, it is with joy and exuberance that Fringe will be celebrating its final 13 episodes of its fifth season continuing the same tradition.
As the extraordinary journey of Fringe and its Fringe Division heroes comes to an end, it is only fitting to reflect back on its achievements and to ponder where the journey has taken us. The following interviews with executive producer J.H. Wyman and some of the cast show their excitement over what is still yet to come and the joy over what they have achieved:

Terry O'Quinn as Gavin Doran in "666 Park Avenue" (ABC/Andrew Eccles)
ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
It’s tricky to get a solid feel...

I think I’m going to start starting these things off with a few videos and/or other tidbits that don’t work so well with Storify. We’ll see how it goes.
First off, I’m just going to vent for a second, mainly because the word “Paparazzi” crossed my desks so many times today. Basically, I’m fed up with them, and the whole system that continues their existence, so let me just ask you this, If you were famous, couldn’t you get rid of them? I think I could. Let’s see if anyone want to adopt my system.
So, I’m famous right (it’s like a hypothetical), and wherever the Paparazzi show up, there’s little I can do about it. Those pictures are going somewhere. I can hide from them, ignore them, try to duck them, but those times that they do show up,...

Chicago – Is Rahm Emanuel taking notes? “The Chicago Code,” premiering on Fox TV on February 7th, exposes the underbelly of cops, bad guys and political corruption characteristic of the Windy City, and also has an intriguing cast and storytelling style.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
Jennifer Beals leads the way as Chicago police superintendent Teresa Colvin, whose honesty and dedication made her the youngest and first female top cop in the city’s history. Jason Clarke is Jarek Wysocki, a gritty street level detective who was once Colvin’s partner, and who has a reputation for no-nonsense policing. One of his main characteristics is that he can’t seem to tolerate new men, including his latest partner Caleb Evers (Matt Lauria). Overseeing them in city government is the powerful Alderman Gibbons (Delroy Lindo).
Superintendent Colvin is suspicious of Gibbons, and tries to form a task force to root out his misconduct. When the...

Syfy has ordered yet another new series—this one chronicling a town where everyone has unusual abilities. No, not Eureka! This is Haven, derived from Stephen King’s recent paperback original The Colorado Kid (published by Hard Case Crime).
Syfy has requested 13 episodes set in this supernatural (as opposed to science fictional) community. Production begins early next year.
Updates
William Shatner’s talk show returns this weekend on the Bio Channel for a second season. It’s Shatner’S Raw Nerve.
Speaking of many happy returns (and as previously noted), NBC’s Chuck resurfaces on January 10 (special night) and 11 (regular time slot) with ABC’s Lost coming back February 2. Now, it looks as if V will return to ABC with the rest of its initial season (nine episodes) in March. No exact date yet. Ratings,...

With a nod to Joe Ahearne’s excellent 2004 series Space Odyssey: Voyage To The Planets, ABC-tv premiered its own solar system grand tour adventure Sunday, August 2. Created by James D. Parriott (Grey’S Anatomy, Dark Skies, Misfits Of Science), Defying Gravity details the exploits of eight astronauts on the spaceship Antares as it makes a six-year trip through the solar system. But as the two-hour pilot episode demonstrated, this mission is far from smooth sailing. A mysterious problem results in a last-minute crew shake-up. Odd glitches occur. And the crew members—some of whom seem unqualified to be on the mission—bring all sorts of emotional baggage with them into space.
This might sound too much like soap opera, but the plot elements are just tantalizing enough to keep viewers hooked. The cast—especially Ron Livingston and Christina Cox—promise to be major players. The production values are excellent. In...

On ABC's new drama Defying Gravity (premieres Sunday, 9 p.m. Et), Ron Livingston plays one of eight astronauts -- four men, four women -- who embark on a six-year mission to explore the solar system. Or so they think that's their objective. Turns out, there's something Mission Control refers to as "Beta" pulling the strings. What it is and what it wants are mysteries that unfold over 13 episodes, which split time between the current happenings on the spacecraft Antares and flashbacks to the crew's training and selection process. So what can Livingston, who stars as flight engineer/tragic hero/ladies man Maddux Donner, tell us about the series from former executive producers of Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives? There will be space sex. "The idea was, what's a really cool workplace environment that we haven't seen before," he says, burying the lead. "The astronaut corp halfway to Venus seemed like...

Established 1974! Our news column takes a chance on virtuality.
Sci-fi TV
There are Several important Sf TV events this weekend! The first is tonight’s broadcast of Virtuality, the TV movie/unsold series pilot from Battlestar Galactica’s Ron Moore & Michael Taylor. New Amsterdam’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau captains the spaceship Phaeton, its exploits also being filmed on board for a futuristic reality show. The cast (see photo) includes, among others, Sienna Guillory, James D’Arcy and Clea DuVall. Peter Berg (Hancock) directed. At one point, this was going to air on the ratings-dead night of July 4, but that plan changed. If it earns ratings and/or acclaim, another network Might take a chance on Virtuality. Odds are good that it’ll be issued later on DVD, but help the cause anyhow and watch Virtuality tonight, Friday, 8-10 p.m. on Fox.
But that’s Not all! BBC America offers the U.
