Steve Whitmire, the voice of Kermit the Frog for 27 years, isn't going away quietly.
The 57-year-old puppeteer was fired in October from his job as voicing Kermit the Frog over what the studio is calling "repeated unacceptable business conduct" that was over "a period of many years." Whitmire appeared on the Today show on Thursday, and said the decision completely blindsided him.
"I was stunned, it seemed like about five seconds of silence," Whitmire says about receiving the call that he would no longer voice the beloved Muppet. "And I had had no advance warning on that. Nothing had ever been framed to me as a career-breaking problem, you know."

The war wages on between ousted Kermit the Frog puppeteer Steve Whitmire and the Muppets franchise. Whitmire took to his personal blog on Wednesday following criticism from Cheryl Henson, daughter of late Muppets creator Jim Henson. Whitmire has posted numerous messages after announcing last week that Disney had replaced him with Matt Vogel as the voice of Kermit after 27 years. Cheryl wrote on Facebook earlier this week that Whitmire was never Jim’s choice to take over for him as the beloved character, adding that Whitmire’s vision of Kermit had veered from Jim’s. John Henson, the son of Muppets creator Jim Henson, died of a heart attack on Friday. He was 48.
John Henson Dies
Henson passed away at his home in Saugerties, N.Y. after building a snow igloo with his daughter, his sister, Cheryl Henson, told the New York Daily News. She says he suffered a “massive heart attack.”
Following in his father’s footsteps, Henson worked as a puppeteer in a number of Muppet films. In Muppet Treasure Island, It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie and others, Henson performed as the ogre Sweetums. Henson also served as both a shareholder and board member of the Jim Henson Company.
In addition to his work honoring his father’s legacy, Henson enjoyed working on restoration projects. “He was more of an artist," Brian Jay Jones, who wrote a biography on Henson, told the Los Angeles Times. "He renovated a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse,...

Since their next feature film won’t be out in theaters until next year, the Muppets are taking over the Smithsonian during the hiatus. Reuters reports that 21 puppets in from Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and various other projects – including Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie, Fozzie Bear, and the Swedish Chef – will join Kermit in the Jim Henson Collection at the Museum of American History on Washington's National Mall, and will become a part of the museum’s broader puppetry display beginning in November. Tuesday's induction ceremony took place on what would have been Henson's 77th birthday, and Henson Corporation archivist Karen Falk highlighted the importance of including the often overlooked Rowlf in the collection. “Kermit was Jim's alter ego, but Rowlf was Jim's alter ego without the ambition," she explained. “He was Jim on the weekend, Jim in a hammock.” Cheryl Henson, the late creator’s daughter who is now...

New York — The Muppets may have taken Manhattan, but they're getting a spiffy new home in Queens.
Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Bert and Ernie of "Sesame Street" fame, the stars of "Fraggle Rock" and other puppets, costumes and items from throughout Muppets creator Jim Henson's career have been donated to the Museum of the Moving Image, which is building a new gallery to house them, the institution announced Tuesday.
Encompassing almost 400 items ranging from original puppets to behind-the-scenes footage, the gift is a boon for the 25-year-old museum, which saw attendance skyrocket during a temporary exhibit in 2011 and 2012 of Henson's work. And it fulfills a cherished goal for Henson's widow and collaborator, Jane Henson, who died last month at 78.

Beloved by children of all ages around the world, Elmo is an international icon. Few people know his creator, Kevin Clash, who dreamed of working with his idol, master puppeteer Jim Henson. Displaying his creativity and talent at a young age, Kevin ultimately found a home on Sesame Street. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, this documentary includes rare archival footage, interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O’Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney and others and offers a behind-the-scenes look at Sesame Street and the Jim Henson Workshop.

Jim Henson created Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Bert & Ernie, Oscar the Grouch and many others for Sesame Street, but there is one iconic character that stands above them all. Elmo is beloved by many, including my younger self, and at Sundance this year we got an intimate behind-the-scenes look at his rise to fame. The genius behind it all was Kevin Clash and in Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, director Constance Marks chronicles his adventure to the spotlight.

Not one, but two of our quotes made the cut in the first trailer below for the “feel-good movie of the year.” Check it out via indieWIRE and leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Coming out of this year's Sundance Film Festival, one of the stories people seemed most eager to tell was how they cried their little hearts out [1] after seeing Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey. The documentary, directed by Constance Marks, is about Kevin Clash, the man behind the famous Sesame Street character Elmo. It simultaneously tells the tale of how he was [2] able to turn his unique dream - to be a puppeteer - into reality while also chronicling the rise of Jim Henson and the Muppets. It was Peter's favorite film [3] at Sundance this year and now it's finally being released. Being Elmo will open in New York on October 21 and then begin expanding on November 4. After the jump, see what date it's coming to your city and watch a video blog reaction to the film. Here's a video blog that Peter and David recorded after seeing Being Elmo at...

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey (2011)
Directed by Constance Marks
2011, USA
To children of all ages around the world, Elmo is an international icon and a household name. The puppet who characteristically avoids pronouns, referring to himself in the third person and known as the “Little Red Menace” by Sesame Street traditionalists, has found fame in regular mainstream television and movies. He’s become a regular guest on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, appeared on Martha Stewart Living and Martha, The Tony Danza Show, and was even on a special episode of Oprah called The Faces Behind The Famous Names. He starred in the theatrically-released motion pictures Elmo in Grouchland, Elmo Saves Christmas and appeared in a fifth-season episode of The West Wing. He is so well known that Elmo is the only non-human or puppet ever to testify before the U.

Labyrinth may be the most heinous crime committed against the human mind at the hand of muppeteers. It’s not awful, it’s not even bad – it’s just a total mind screw from the first Bowie appearance on out. Who’s the movie really for? I still say it should be shown to children. The images in Labyrinth were and remain some of the most bizarre things a muppet has ever done. Bird-things dancing on their heads, a fox riding saddleback on a dog or a tunnel full of faces made out of hands – suspend your disbelief indefinitely, otherwise there’s no hope for you enjoying this one.
