Mma are arguably the toughest athletes on the planet. In a sport where the money hasn’t come near to scraping the pay of boxers or footballers, why do they continue to fight? The answer is simple; they love competing and for most of them it is all they know.
Continuing beyond your prime in a sport like basketball or soccer doesn’t come with many adverse affects besides you not performing at your best, but it’s a different story in combat sports. The price you pay is your health and the quality of your life. But such is the irresistible draw of competing that even when you’re past your athletic prime and others can see it, it’s possible for the fighter to miss the revelation.
After years of steeling themselves for battle and building their arrogance, they are always, inevitably, the last to doubt themselves.

Love him or hate him, Jon “Bones” Jones is an absolute beast.
Coming off of his impressive win over Daniel Cormier at Ufc 182, one of the main talking points surrounding Jon Jones was his place in history and his desire to become known as the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all-time. In the post-fight press conference he admitted that he was willing to concede the honor to Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva, but that he hopes to have surpassed them by the end of 2015.
He’s just being humble–a rarity for Jon Jones–because he’s already the greatest of all-time.
Who is truly the best ever is a hotly and often debated topic among Mma fans. A convincing case can only be made for a handful of guys, but depending on the criteria you’re using to evaluate them the list of potential candidates shrinks even smaller.

Well, the Ufc has finally done it: it has announced the return of Anderson Silva, in a fight that actually more or less qualifies as a super fight, to be held at Ufc 183 on January 31st, 2015. There, he will meet the ever controversial Nick Diaz in a fight that promises to be an explosive clash of striking styles, given that neither man is known for wrestling opponents.
As a result, it’s the volume punching of Diaz against the accuracy and agility of Silva in what will no doubt be one of, if not the, most anticipated bouts of the next half year or so.

There was big news in the Mma world today as legendary Pride and Strikeforce champ Dan Henderson is apparently heading down in weight.
Hendo has hit hard times in his current Ufc run, and was last seen being rag-dolled at light heavyweight by possible title challenger Daniel Cormier in May. After the bout, fans and media pundits alike speculated about a drop back to middleweight for Hendo, who once competed against Anderson Silva for Silva’s middleweight title.
Hendo, however, will likely be 44 years old the next time he sets foot in the ring, and the weight cut to middleweight may be daunting, though he did weigh in at 199lbs for the Cormier bout – under the light heavyweight mark of 205lbs.
If Hendo retains his power at middleweight, it could give the beloved vet once last shot at the belt.
The news was first reported by MMAFighting, quoting Hendo...

En route to the huge success it enjoys currently, the Ufc has had to avoid many obstacles, navigate around many roadblocks and jump over many hurdles along the way. From disassociating itself from the ‘anything goes’ blood-sport image it had in the early days to dealing with the constant opposition from the culinary union, it hasn’t been easy to turn the Ufc into a legitimate, multinational sport watched by millions each year.
However, there is one obstacle that the Ufc will never be able to shake off – fight cancelations. Whether it be through injury, a failed drugs test or some less common reason, each and every year a number of the fights which we – the fans – get giddy with excitement over are suddenly cancelled, either for a fighter to be replaced with a less intriguing opponent or for the bout to be scrapped entirely. Rousey is a particularly important member of the current Ufc roster, as she is seeing a tremendous amount of...

The Ufc made history this weekend when it hosted its first ever women’s mixed martial arts match, its first ever women’s championship defense, its first ever openly gay/lesbian fighter, and its first ever female headliner. Yes, all of that in a single event that has already shattered a few records. This was not the first ever Wmma bout to be sure, but with the prestige, power, and position of the Ufc, holding a women’s fight anoints the growing movement within the sport with legitimacy and belonging.
It’s Ladies Night. Mitchell Stucky and I cover all of the action in the prelims (including a FotY candidate with Bermudez v. Grice) in part 1 of the Getting Lucky Mma Podcast and the entire main card in part 2.
Summary: The prelims saw the usual mix of exciting finishes and back-n-forth action throughout the Facebook and FX card with a few notable stinkers.

The Ultimate Fighter hasn’t exactly been that great for the last few seasons. From the coaches, to the fights and the awful decision to the move the show to Friday night there hasn’t been a lot of fan interest in the reality series. As much as the show is about the fighters living together and trying to win contracts with the Ufc it’s the coaches that generate most of the hype. The last couple of seasons (not counting the international versions) have failed to deliver on that front.
Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson as coaches last season was hard to get excited about for multiple reasons. There wasn’t much of an established rivalry between the two, neither man was really near contention for a title shot and the fight just wasn’t that interesting. Then after the dud of a season Carwin gets injured and we...

Tim Means (18-3) joins me on the Getting Lucky with Rob podcast to talk about his upcoming fight on Ufc on Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz on December 8th in Seattle, Washington. He’s facing Abel Trujillo (9-4), who is making his promotional debut. In our candid and open conversation, Tim shares with us his storied background in New Mexico, learning to fight against bullies, taking a pro fight with a gun shot wound, his stint in prison, and much more.
Ufc on Fox 5 Overview: This fight for Tim Means was originally intended to be on the Ufc 151 card, but due to the cancellation of the headliner between Jon Jones and Dan Henderson and the subsequent loss of the entire pay per view card, the fight was moved to this card along with Daron Cruickshank vs. Henry Martinez and Denis Siver vs. Nam Pham, all on the undercard.

When someone says “no comment” it can mean many things. It can mean that the person can’t comment at this time due to contracts or legal measures. It can mean someone has to prepare a proper statement. But in the case of Zuffa’s “no comment” on the status of Strikeforce, it can mean that the rumors of the organization ending might be true.
The injury bug has hit the Mma world hard in the past few months. Dan Henderson’s injury caused the eventual cancellation of Ufc 151. Anderson Silva had to step up and save Ufc 153 after Jose Aldo was injured. Several fighters have been removed from cards recently. Ufc has been scrambling to fill spots in fight cards all year. Strikeforce- owned by Ufc parent company Zuffa- has had worse luck in these situations. An injury to Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez caused his title fight at Strikeforce: Melendez vs.

For those watching Ufc 152 on Saturday night the sight of former Ufc light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort locking in an armbar that was seconds away from snapping Jon Jones‘ arm was cringe worthy. There was no doubt that his arm was damaged after that point but the champion was able to survive and came back from the brink of defeat in the first round, submitting his veteran opponent via americana arm lock in the fourth round.
Today, MMAJunkie reported that Jones had been told by doctors that he may have nerve damage to his right bicep. While Jones’ impressive victory had many discussing the reigning champion’s next opponent, Bones’ arm will likely sideline him at least until the end of the first quarter of 2013.
With all the injuries plaguing the sport at the moment the damage sustained by one of the Ufc’s most marketable fighters compounds Ufc President Dana White’s frustration.

Now this is getting a bit ridiculous.
Last minute injuries have begun to take their toll on the sport of mixed martial arts. The Ufc was forced to cancel their first event ever at Ufc 151 due to Dan Henderson’s eleventh hour injury earlier this month. Ufc 153, which is scheduled to take place in Brazilon October 13th, was totally ravaged due to injuries sustained by featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Ufc star Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.
Strikeforce showed that it was not immune to the rampant injury bug either as news broke out last week that Frank Mir was forced to pull out of his heavyweight headline against Daniel Cormier on November 3rd.
Unfortunately for fans, the plague is not over yet as Strikeforce just released a statement indicating that Gilbert Melendez is also hurt and will not be able to defend his title on Saturday, September 29th in Sacramento.

1. Ironically Stacked Card
The biggest criticism levelled at the Ufc in 2012 – rightly so – has been the weak cards they have put out on Pay-Per-View. The addition of the multi-million dollar Fox Television deal and a refusal to decrease the number of Pay Per View events to compensate has seen the Ufc roster spread wafer thin. It is rare for any card to have more than one marquee fight right now, in some instances there is simply no pay per view draw at all. The Ufc have told us for years that their product is better than boxing because its shows aren’t just built around one big fight, that the Ufc itself is a bigger draw than any individual fighter. At this point in time that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
It is somewhat ironic then that the first, and probably last, stacked Pay Per View card of...

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (Ufc) returns to the Air Canada Centre in Toronto for Ufc 152: Jones Vs Belfort on Saturday, September 22 and current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will be looking to restore his reputation after the highly publicized fiasco that caused Ufc 151’s cancellation earlier this month.
In brief, Jon Jones’ refusal to fight Chael Sonnen following an eleventh hour injury sustained by his original opponent, Dan Henderson, led to a series of confusing match up changes that eventually did not come to fruition and doomed Ufc 151.
The cancellation likely cost the organization millions of dollars and obviously irritated the mixed martial arts community. Nevertheless, Jones has acknowledged his mistake and wants to make sure he can shed his newly minted characterization as a villain.
He explained in a recent interview with MMAWeekly:
I am not going to say I embraced the role of being a villain because I am not.

After the disaster that was Ufc 151, where the organisation had to cancel an entire card for the first time in its history, Ufc chairman Dana White will be hoping Ufc 152 delivers.
There has been much debate in the past few weeks over Jon Jones’ decision to turn down a fight with Chael Sonnen on 8 days’ notice, a decision which subsequently resulted in the collapse of Ufc 151. The Light Heavyweight champion has come under a lot of flak from fans and fellow fighters and will be looking to redeem himself in Ufc 152′s main event against the Brazilian Vitor Belfort.
Elsewhere on a stacked main card Featherweights Cub Swanson and Charles Oliviera square off as well as Light Heavyweights Matt Hamill and Roger Hollett. Michael Bisping will face Brian Stann with the winner likely to get a title shot at Anderson Silva and history will be made as the first ever...

Chael Sonnen is still taking shots at Ufc star Jon Jones, but now he's doing it with a flier for his pizza joint in Oregon ... and it's pretty obvious what he's trying to say. Sonnen is still fuming mad that Jones refused to fight him at Ufc 151 after Sonnen was named as an injury replacement for Dan Henderson. So now Sonnen is calling out Jones by adverting a Jon Jones Special Pizza ... which is "loaded with chicken.

This Saturday Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen square off for a second time in an eagerly anticipated rematch. The build-up has been intense and the stare down at this week’s press conference was heated to say the least. There are many that feel Sonnen provides the perfect foil to Silva’s greatness. They are wrong.
Here’s five reasons why…
1. His Skillset
Anderson Silva has more tools in his locker than any other fighter. He can end a fight at any time from anywhere. If the action is standing then he has a wealth of strikes available to him to finish the fight whether it be the front kick that dispatched Vitor Belfort, the elbow which left Tony Fryklund a crumpled heap on the floor or the jab (that’s right a jab) which stopped Forrest Griffin. His arsenal and array of striking is truly terrifying and we have...

The Ufc's Ultimate Fighter (Tuf) reality TV series returned to our screens last Friday night, but arrived with a twist -- as well as the fastest knockout in its history, at just eight seconds. While the show carried the same format and dangled the same prize at the end of it all, the action was, for the first time, live and pretty much uninterrupted and the season will, in time, be far more interactive than ever before, offering fight fans the opportunity to participate and dictate the fates of those inside the house.
A runaway success since its inception in 2005, this latest tweaking should ensure it remains as such, following the odd hit-and-miss season of late. With change comes a period for reflection, however, and now seems as good a time as any to remember and highlight some of the show's very best success stories, if only to provide inspiration...

Like Paramore's Hayley Williams, we're big Ufc fans around the Newsroom, so it has come as a great shock and disappointment to everybody at MTV News that former Ufc champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has decided to retire from fighting. After 37 career fights, Jackson has decided to focus on other opportunities, which includes his role as B.A. Baracus — originally made famous by Mr. T — in the upcoming "A-Team" movie. He has chosen to step away from the Ufc at a rather inopportune time, as he is currently one of the coaches (along with rival Rashad Evans) on the just-started season of "The Ultimate Fighter." Not surprisingly, he has drawn the ire of Evans and Ufc President Dana White.
The fight world will miss Rampage, as he is one of the best promos in the business and has been involved in some of the most fun, entertaining fights in the history...

Sandra Bullock: Is it a bad thing we're opening Labor Day Weekend?
Bradley Cooper: Whatever. It's not like we were ever an Oscar contender.
An editor of mine recently observed how odd it is that Memorial Day weekend is such a big-deal launching pad for summer movies while the three-day Labor Day holiday is generally where the mediocre (and the downright awful) go to die.
Let it be known that 2009 doesn't deviate from that formula with this weekend's big nationwide releases.
If you thought Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Ugly Truth were as witless and inane as movies were going to get this summer, you clearly haven't seen All About Steve, a ramshackle rom-com so blisteringly stupid and off-the-rails that you find yourself wondering if anyone in the production has ever met a human being.
