ABC has passed on moving forward with the proposed spinoff of family comedy “The Middle” revolving around Eden Sher’s Sue Heck character.
ABC shot a pilot and had been developing “Sue in the City” as a potential followup to Warner Bros. TV’s “The Middle,” which wrapped its nine-season run earlier this year. The spinoff was penned by “Middle” creators DeAnne Heline and Eileen Heisler.
ABC confirmed the decision Wednesday afternoon.
The decision comes as ABC and other networks are poised to make a slew of development decisions for the 2019-20 development cycle. ABC is in the midst of an executive transition as entertainment president Channing Dungey has stepped down and will be succeeded by Karey Burke, formerly a top programming executive at Freeform and NBC.

The Sue-centric spinoff of ABC’s “The Middle” is heading toward the pilot stage, according to star Eden Sher.
A script from “The Middle” co-creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline is in the works, and the network is preparing to shoot a pilot, Sher said in an interview with TVLine at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday.
As TheWrap reported in May, ABC was in development on a Sher-led spinoff shortly after the single-camera comedy wrapped its nine-season run, though at the time no deals were in place. ABC declined to comment on the current status of the spinoff.

Emmy voters have one last chance to right a wrong and finally nominate Eden Sher for her role as the eternally optimistic Sue Heck on the ABC comedy “The Middle.” This slice-of-lice charmer ended its run this spring after nine seasons. Over the course of its first eight seasons, “The Middle” was woefully left on the outside of the Emmy Awards.
Year after year, “The Middle” was overshadowed by another laffer on the alphabet network, “Modern Family.” While that mockumentary about a upwardly mobile California clan raked in Emmys, “The Middle,” which is centered on a working class Indiana family, was overlooked by TV academy members.

We may have only said goodbye to the Hecks just weeks ago, but we may not have seen the last of one of them.
According to Deadline, a spinoff focusing on Sue Heck is in the works at ABC, and it could debut as soon as midseason if all goes to plan.
What's more, The Middle creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline are behind the project.
There are no details about what the potential series would be about. All we know at this stage is that it Eden Sher will lead the cast.
The Middle concluded its nine-year run earlier this month, and the final season remained a solid performer for ABC on Tuesday nights.

ABC is eyeing a spinoff of “The Middle” from creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, TheWrap has learned.
The potential series would revolve around Sue Heck, the character played by Eden Sher, though no deals are in place. No further details were immediately available, and both ABC and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment.
The news comes just a week after “The Middle” wrapped its nine-season run on the network, with a series finale showing Heck getting married to next-door neighbor Sean Donahue, played by Beau Wirick.
First premiering in 2009, “The Middle” starred Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn as a middle-class couple raising their three kids in the fictional town of Orson, Indiana. Charlie McDermott and Atticus Shaffer also starred.

A spinoff of “The Middle” could be coming to ABC.
The broadcaster is said to be developing a new series that would center around socially awkward Heck daughter Sue, played by Eden Sher. The news of the potential spinoff comes just over a week after “The Middle” aired its series finale after nine seasons, though there were rumblings that such a project could be in development that started earlier this year. In final season, Sue was in college studying hotel management. “The Middle” creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline are attached to the project, along with Warner Bros. TV, though deals for Heisler, Heline, and Sher are not yet final.
ABC declined to comment.

The Middle‘s Sue Heck may be coming back to ABC. I hear the network is in negotiations for a pilot production commitment to a spinoff from the middle-class family comedy toplined by series co-star Eden Sher. The project, which could be for midseason consideration, comes from The Middle creators/executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline and studio Warner Bros. TV.
Deals with Sher, Heisler and Heline are still being finalized for the potential comedy series, which would be centered on Sher’s Sue character. I hear the new show will be set a few years in the future from The Middle finale, chronicling the next stage of Sue’s life as a young adult with a new cast of characters around her.
The concept for the series is still being honed in, with a couple of other writers from the original series expected to join Heline and Heisler.

“It’s the end of an era,” declares a teary-eyed Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton) near the end of the series finale of ABC sitcom “The Middle.” Indeed, the last episode of the long-running show, which aired on May 22, marks the departure of one of the network’s most consistently-excellent, flagship family comedies from the airwaves. Debuting in the same season as the network’s breakout, critical-darling “Modern Family,” “The Middle” always seemed overshadowed by its sitcom sibling in the clamor for awards recognition. With its pitch-perfect and satisfying final episode, though, “The Middle” should finally receive its due as a bona fide Emmy contender.
For nine seasons, “The Middle” chronicled the hilarious and always relatable foibles of the working-class Heck family, who live in the fictional town of Orson, Indiana. ‘The Middle’ Co-Creator On The “Bittersweet” Series Finale, Devoted Fans And Possible 10-Year Reboot
Spoiler Alert: This article contains minor details about the series finale of The Middle.
If there is one word that The Middle co-creator and executive producer Eileen Heisler can describe the end of the popular ABC family sitcom, it would be “bittersweet.” Heisler and fellow creator and Ep DeAnn Heline served up the season finale of The Middle tonight and fans of the show were very much in their feelings as they saw the Hecks drive off into the sunset as they took Axl to his new job in Denver.
The fans weren’t the only ones emotional after saying goodbye to the Hecks. During Deadline’s interview with Heisler, she shared stories from the final days of filming with the cast and crew. Some people broke down, some people were nostalgic, but after nine seasons with one of TV’s most beloved families, the one feeling that stayed consistent was love.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the series finale of The Middle.
The time has come for another beloved TV family to depart the airwaves and become a benchmark in pop culture history. Tonight, we said goodbye to the quirky and heartwarming antics of the Hecks from The Middle. Created by Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, the nine seasons of the popular ABC family sitcom came to an end with a two-part finale appropriately titled “A Heck of a Ride.”
The big finale starts in the dark — yes the dark. Axl (Charlie McDermott) enters Frankie (Patricia Heaton) and Mike’s (Neil Flynn) room as they are asleep and makes the announcement that he has decided to take the job in Denver. After his announcement, there is a silence between the parents until Frankie starts to comedically sob and finds comfort in the cookies she keeps bedside — cookies that Mike also partakes in.

The last nine years have been one heck of a ride for “The Middle” cast and executive producers.
Series creators DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler don’t even want audiences to pardon the pun when they turn on ABC to watch the middle-America family comedy one last time on May 22 and see that the series finale title is simply that — “A Heck of a Ride.”
“One thing that’s very important to us is to think about our fans and to think about us and think about an ending that’s appropriate to the show we’ve always been,” Heisler tells Variety. “Personally, I don’t think the point of a finale is to shock [the audience]. I think that you really want to honor the show and give people an [episode] that is closer to a typical one, while being exciting, than something that veers off in another direction.”

A warm but never schmaltzy, perfectly formed family sitcom with no weak links in its cast, here's why you should watch The Middle...
Family sitcoms aren’t exactly thin on the ground, so finding a new spin on the format is always going to take some work. Originally intended as a vehicle for Ricki Lake, The Middle is a case in point. After several years in development, it finally aired in autumn 2009 with a new lead: Patricia Heaton, one of the stars of hugely popular show Everybody Loves Raymond. Writers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline had previously been responsible for Roseanne, so the track records of all involved boded well for the series’ prospects. Six seasons later – with a seventh confirmed in May – expectations have well and truly been proved correct.

Family sitcoms aren’t exactly thin on the ground, so finding a new spin on the format is always going to take some work. It seems that glaring omission on the list of renewed ABC series has been corrected. I’ve learned that The Middle also has been officially renewed for a sixth season. The unsung hero of ABC‘s comedy block, from creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, has been a reliable 8 Pm anchor, regularly used as a launch pad for new comedies. The Middle now joins Modern Family and The Goldbergs as the three renewed ABC comedy series. Also expected to come back is Last Man Standing from 20th TV, whose renewal may be tied with the studio’s comedy pilots Cristela and Fresh Off The Boat that are eyeing a pickup.
