Quentin Tarantino movies are defined as much by their sound design as they are by the director’s trademark writing, and over the filmmaker’s last three movies a big part of the Tarantino sound has been crafted by supervising foley artist Gary A. Hecker. For “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” it fell on Hecker to figure out how to create the head-smashing, dog-biting, and flame-throwing murders that make up the movie’s climax. The scene in question finds Manson cult members Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison), Tex Watson (Austin Butler), and Patricia Krenwinkel (Madisen Beaty) breaking into the home of Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) in order to kill him. The “Manson murders” are upended when the killers run into Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who along with his dog dispose of the cult members in brutally horrific ways.

Abu Dhabi – Gary Hacker, supervising Foley artist on the new Arnold Schwarzenegger movie The Last Stand, has slapped down fellow sound worker Michael Broomberg for publicly suggesting that sound post-production on the Lionsgate film was hurried. Broomberg, a Hollywood sound artist whose studio work includes War of the Worlds and Watchmen, told an Abu Dhabi Film Festival panel audience that shrinking sound budgets for independent films was “madness.” During his Masterclass, he said that independent producers never earmark enough money for Foley work. Broomberg added that he had just eight days to do Foley work on The

Kim Kardashian has settled a lawsuit with clothing company Old Navy. The reality TV star previously claimed the brand used a lookalike of her in one of its adverts last year, but the lawsuit has been dismissed in Los Angeles today (29.08.12) and the company agreed to pay the brunette beauty an undisclosed amount based on her claims. While the exact terms of the settlement were not filed in court, both parties are said to be ''satisfied'' with the outcome. Kim's lawyer Gary Hecker said: ''The lawsuit was resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties.'' A report last year revealed...

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly column dedicated to what’s happening. We begin this evening’s rather slim pickings with a shot from Dredd, which is one of a number of images from Dredd that hit the web over the last few days. I will say this: Lena Headey looks pretty fierce as Ma-Ma. 1. A study of color in movie posters – Breaks down the distribution of color in movie posters between 1914 and 2012. It’s a pain-staking look at the colors we’ve responded to over the years and how cooler tones (blues, greens, purples) have come into style more since the 1980s. 2. Awesome Batman art – GeekTyrant has collected a number of pieces of Batman art that are very cool. Alongside some Alex Ross pieces, there was this one from Ruiz Burgos which I found particularly striking: 3. A Unique Achievement in Myth-making – Speaking of the Dark Knight, Charlie...

Socialite Kim Kardashian has launched a legal battle against the bosses of a popular U.S. clothing chain for using a look-a-like in their latest advertising campaign.
The reality TV star was not impressed when she saw the TV commercial for Old Navy, which featured brunette model Melissa Molinaro, who bears a striking similarity to Kardashian and was also named 'Kim' in the ad.
Her attorney, Gary Hecker, filed suit against the fashion firm on Wednesday, accusing the retailer of the "unauthorised use of Kardashian's name, likeness, identity and persona".
The star, who has her own clothing deal with rival store Sears, is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
Ironically, Molinaro's Kardashian similarities have caught the eye of the socialite's ex-boyfriend Reggie Bush - the American football star has been romantically linked to the model in recent weeks.

Not so super c-u-t-e now, is it Old Navy? Though really, the surprise here isn't that Kim Kardashian has filed suit against the clothing giant for using a fairly uncanny lookalike in their recent ad campaign. The surprise here is that it took Kim so long to finally get around to filing the paperwork on this Fauxdashian fiasco. But this morning, she's righted that wrong. Kim's attorney, Gary Hecker, filed the federal lawsuit against Old Navy in U.S. Disctrict Court bright and early this morning, over the retailer's "unauthorized use of Kardashian's name, likeness, identity and persona." In addition to compensatory and punitive damages—which a source tells E! News...

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes during post production on a film. One of the areas that has always interested me is the work done by foley artists. These artists painstakingly recreate and many times create new sounds to meet the tone and flow of a specific film. Below we have a cool video of one such foley artist, Gary Heckler.
The video mainly contains worik being done on Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. Here is a description of the video from the film's Vimeo page:

Most serious film fans have a good idea of the basics of foley work: sound engineers in a studio recreate (or, in many cases, simply create) all the incidental sounds that fill out the soundtrack of a film. Most of us have probably seen Ben Burtt talk about banging on high-tension wires to create laser sounds for Star Wars, or how he layered sounds [1] and waved a microphone to create the signature lightsaber effects. Creating all-new sounds is great, but most foley work is about recreating everyday sounds, and doing so in a way that can be mixed with flexibility and tuned specifically to the tone of a given film. So check out this video portrait of foley artist Gary Hecker, after the break. Most of what we see here is work being done on Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, and as a result the film plays into the classic...

It's almost become a cliché to rant and rave about just how important sound is to a film, but then a video like this comes around and reminds us all that there simply isn't enough wild praise to lavish on the mad geniuses that somehow manage to breath true life into a series of photographs projected in rapid motion onto a large screen. Anyone who has seen a work-in-progress print of a movie without finished sound can tell you that -- despite film being a visual medium -- it's up to the sound guys to ease you into the world of the film.
The subject of this all-too-short behind-the-scenes portrait is Gary Hecker, a Foley artist whose filmography may very well make your brain explode. His job is simple in concept, but amazingly complex in execution: He has to look at the finished film and recreate...

Of course the big news items yesterday were the announcements related to marriage equality. As always, I prefer my legal analysis from the Law Dork, Chris Geidner. Basically, the Doma announcement was nice, but not at all what the headlines said. As for the filing on Prop 8 asking the stay be lifted, that’s more interesting. Particularly if you live in California.
Does anyone else think that allowing Prince Harry to throw the stag party for Prince William is risky? At least taking a yacht out into international waters should minimize witnesses. But I admit to spitting Coke Zero on my keyboard when I read that the party would involve a “variety of extreme watersports.”
The DC Agenda has a nice roundup of various gay Oscar winners, from costume designers like Albert Wolsky to Dustin Lance Black.
