After more than three decades, Frank Henenlotter’s putrid parable for drug addiction hits harder than ever with tons of self-aware bite.
“Splatstick” is an exaggerated horror subgenre that explores grotesque gore that’s so over the top that it begins to border on the point of comedy. Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, and even more contemporary voices in horror like Sion Sono or Terrifier’s Damien Leone are names that are often associated with this bold, bloody genre. Frank Henenlotter is a pivotal name in splatstick low-budget indie horror whose work often goes overlooked, despite its decidedly more outlandish energy. Henenlotter’s greatest claim to fame is his Basket Case trilogy, but it’s Brain Damage that’s actually the deepest film in his oeuvre.
All of Henenlotter’s horror films have very obvious analogues and they aren’t especially deep in their subtext, but there’s still subtext all the same.

When I think of cult filmmakers, one of the first names to burst from my brainpan is Frank Henenlotter. From Basket Case (1982) to Bad Biology (2008), his horror films are always loaded with qualities that elude mainstream appeal, such as bizarre humor, over the top gore, and a crazy circus geek aesthetic that almost dares you to look away. Speaking of splattering cranium matter, his second feature length film, Brain Damage (1988) checks off all the Henenboxes and even one more – a trenchant social message about addiction (if you want it).
Produced by Palisades Partners and given a limited release in April, Brain Damage was Henenlotter’s long awaited follow up to Basket Case; well, long awaited at least for horror fans of that legendary micro budget wonder. While the ultra low budget of that gem gave it a unique and gritty charm, Brain Damage’s considerably deeper pockets allowed Henenlotter to...

Will Casey Moss finally be nominated for a Daytime Emmy for playing Jj Deveraux on “Days of Our Lives”? Despite playing the role for the last five years he has yet to be nominated for Best Younger Actor. He’s pre-nominated again this year, and the good news for him is that this time we not only predict he’ll be nominated, we think he’s going to win too. That would be the seventh victory in the category for “Days,” which would tie it as the most awarded soap in this race since it was established in 1985.
The current record-holders are the now-defunct “Guiding Light” and the still-running “General Hospital.” “Gl” won Best Younger Actor for Rick Hearst (1991), Monti Sharp (1993), Kevin Mambo (1996-1997), Jordi Vilasuso (2003) and Tom Pelphrey (2006, 2008). But CBS cancelled the series in 2009 after 57 years on the air, so it won’t be able to add to its total.

Chandler Massey made a comeback to “Days of Our Lives” in 2017 after three years away from the show, and now he could make a Daytime Emmys comeback too. But this time he’ll be in a different category. He previously won Best Younger Actor three years in a row (2012-2014), but the age limit for that category is 25. Now Massey is 27, so he’s pre-nominated for the first time in the race for Best Supporting Actor. Can he continue his historic winning streak in a brand new field?
Massey’s three consecutive Younger Actor victories were unprecedented. He was the second to win that category three times, following Jonathan Jackson (“General Hospital”), but he was the first male actor in any category to go back-to-back-to-back. And his role itself was historic: Massey played Will Horton, who was coming to terms with being gay.
It was still rare at that time...

Press Release: May sees the release of a fantastic slate of cult cinema from Arrow Video, with a healthy mix of giallo, cult crime and gore to keep fans happy.
First comes The Climber, starring cult actor Joe Dallesandro (Flesh for Frankenstein, Blood for Dracula). The Climber is a prime example of Italian crime cinema and follows the rise and fall of Dallesandro's smalltime drug dealer, Aldo. Filled with brawls, fistfights, shootouts and explosions, this is an excellent action-thriller. The other big crime release of May is Cops vs Thugs, Kinji Fukasaku's masterpiece...

Our look at underappreciated films of the 80s continues, as we head back to 1988...
Either in terms of ticket sales or critical acclaim, 1988 was dominated by the likes of Rain Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Coming To America. It was the year Bruce Willis made the jump from TV to action star with Die Hard, and became a star in the process.
It was the year Leslie Nielsen made his own jump from the small to silver screen with Police Squad spin-off The Naked Gun, which sparked a hugely popular franchise of its own. Elsewhere, the eccentric Tim Burton scored one of the biggest hits of the year with Beetlejuice, the success of which would result in the birth of Batman a year later. And then there was Tom Cruise, who managed to make a drama about a student-turned-barman into a $170m hit, back when $170m was still an...

Like many film enthusiasts, I love the Criterion Collection. I scoff at some of their selections—I won’t name names—but for the most part, I anticipate new releases with excitement and glee (June’s slate is particularly amazing). Of course, due to lack of finances, I can’t buy as many as I would like – though someday, I will own the entire collection, despite the current economy offering little to no financial opportunity for an individual with my interests and skill set, but I digress.
I do, however, have a minor beef with Criterion. While admiring most of their titles, I’d love to see more emphasis on genre stuff—especially horror. And don’t get me wrong, Criterion boasts some excellent titles—Carnival of Lost Souls, Sisters, The Vanishing, Godzilla, The Devil’s Backbone, Repulsion, plus the highly anticipated release of Scanners being not far off—but they need more.

Jenni Pulos on her upcoming Y&R guest spot
"I definitely have been a Y&R fan for a while. My grandma used to watch, so growing up, I remember having it on every day. I was very flattered. My uncle used to watch, and my cousin still watches. It’s one of the greats. I’m so excited and I was surprised because I’ve never done one. I will tell you that there are some juicy things coming up on Y&R. It’s good stuff and everyone should be tuning in on May 12."
Antonio Sabato Jr. sues auto shop for $7,500
The 39-year-old actor says the shop, Fountain Body & Repair, never fixed his vehicle, damaged it and forged an insurance check without his knowledge, according to documents posted on RadarOnline. The case is set to go to trial on April 26 unless the two sides end up settling it out of court.

Quick, someone tell all my children to alert General Hospital, because ABC’s Castle is plotting a super-soapy wink-wink to Nathan Fillion’s daytime roots by slaying a daytime-tv scribe.
In an episode titled — wait for it — “One Life to Lose,” Beckett and Castle will delve into the murder of a soap opera scribe, TVLine has learned exclusively. As they work the case, watch for multiple stars from ABC’s own sudsers to make appearances (though probably not as themselves but fictional thespians).

Daytime TV actor Rick Hearst, best known for his work on General Hospital and The Bold & The Beautiful, spoke with LookToTheStars.org’s Misty Griffey about the causes important to him.
Why did you choose to support children’s based charities?
There are so many worthy causes. I feel that children are at the core of any philanthropic endeavor. Their education, care, healing, and support when realized gives other charities the hope that only can be ignited through the support and investment you give a child.
