Revered Indian actor Waheeda Rehman has been accorded the Dadasaheb Phalke award, India’s highest film honor.
The award is given for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema and is named after Phalke, director of “Raja Harischandra” (1913), India’s first full-length feature, who is considered the father of Indian cinema.
Rehman, the 85-year-old grande dame of Indian cinema has worked with most of the legendary filmmakers of her country during her career and the roles she chose were in films that are considered classics in the annals of Indian cinema. She worked with Guru Dutt in “Pyaasa” (1957) and “Kaagaz Ke Phool” (1959), Satyajit Ray in “Abhijaan” (1962), Basu Bhattacharya in “Teesri Kasam” (1966) and Yash Chopra in “Kabhie Kabhie” (1976), among many other memorable roles.
But it is her role as Rosie in Vijay Anand’s “Guide” (1965) that Rehman remembers with the greatest fondness. “When I signed ‘Guide’ more than 50 years ago, my friends told...

New Delhi, Feb 23 (Ians) President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Fellowships (Akademi Ratna) and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puruskar) for the year 2019, 2020 and 2021.
In her address on the occasion, the President said that the civilisation showcases the material achievements of a nation but intangible heritage is revealed through its culture.
“Culture is the real identity of a country. India’s unique performing arts have kept our incredible culture alive for centuries. Our arts and artists are the carriers of our rich cultural heritage. ‘Unity in diversity’ is the biggest feature of our cultural traditions,” she said.
The President said that in our tradition, art is a spiritual practice, a medium of the search for truth, a medium of prayer and worship, and a medium of public welfare. Collective exuberance and unity also find expression through dance and music. Art binds the linguistic diversity and regional characteristics in one thread.

She was the queen of all she surveyed. Kalpana Lajmi was the director to watch out for, the most promising female director since Aparna Sen, when Ek Pal and then Rudaali stormed the festivals and even made a neat profit. Today, at 62, Kalpana is isolated and in desperate need of financial aid for a serious kidney ailment. Kalpana, who used up all her savings to look after her mentor and companion Bhupen Hazarika in his dying days, is isolated and all but forgotten. Shockingly, the bio-pic on slain actress Priya Rajvansh which Kalpana was supposed to direct, has quietly passed on to another director. A sure sign that the film industry has forgotten her. In this hour of need, only a few close friends Neena Gupta, Ila Arun and Soni Razdan are there by Kalpana's side. In fact, Soni, we came to know, is trying to organize a regular fund...

Kalpana Lajmi and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's heart-wrenching story may now be told finally! The unusual love story between a 17-year-old girl and a 45-year-old man has been penned and ready to be translated into celluloid and once the casting has been done, will be ready to roll this year. Says a source, the biopic - that details the life of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was earlier being produced by Pooja Bhatt. There was even talk that Pooja would essay the role of Lajmi in the trilingual project which had been tentatively titled The Tempest in English, Kal Boishakhi in Bengali and Dhumuha in Assamese. But now buzz is that Kalpana Lajmi, who was earlier looking for a co-writer to complete the script, has now completed it and is currently in talks with director Prem Soni to direct the film. She and the director will be co-producing the film. The as-yet-untitled...

New Delhi, March 22: From mortgaging his house to seeking funds from friends and family, Sandeep Varma crossed various hurdles to bring on the big screen the heart-wrenching story of Manjunath Shanmugan, an Indian Institute of Management (Iim) graduate who was killed for speaking out against corruption. The first-time director says he found immense "cinematic potential" in the story.
At a time when the Bollywood calendar seems to be near-crowded with biopics on iconic names like Milkha Singh, M.C. Mary Kom, Bhupen Hazarika, Kishore Kumar and Dara Singh, "Manjunath" is Varma's humble effort to bring alive an ordinary officer's.

Guwahati, June 15: It's a region that has produced acclaimed directors like Jahnu Barua and Utpal Borpujari, singers like Bhupen Hazarika and actors like Danny Denzongpa and Adil Hussain, but sadly the northeast has never been on Bollywood's radar. Hopefully, this is set to change with the announcement of Kalpana Lajmi's biopic on Hazarika and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film on Olympic boxing bronze medalist from Manipur Mary Kom.
"Bollywood has not touched the northeast with due seriousness though it has got so many stories to tell and has such beautiful locations for shooting," rued Borpujari, a national award winning film critic-turned-filmmaker.

Mumbai, Nov 15: Kalpana Lajmi is in Guwahati presently to attend the late musical maestro Bhupen Hazarika's barsi. Kalpana had been in a relationship with the late musician for 40 years. She says when she heard the interview of Bhupen's ex-wife Priyamvada to an Assamese channel, she was not shocked, since these things happen in film industry.
But she felt sad for Bhupen, now that he is dead, he cant even clarify anything. Kalpana thinks the statements given by Priyamvada are nothing but well-planned actions against the musician. Kalpana even added that there is nothing to be heard from an ex-wife who has been separated from Bhupen almost.

It’s quite an irony that obituary reports in the media largely have been identifying Dr. Bhupen Hazarika as the “music maestro” and the “legendary balladeer”. He was, of course, both of these, but the kind of impact this genius has had in the socio-cultural-political space of a huge geographic region comprising the North-East India, West Bengal and Bangladesh would be hard to grasp for anyone who does not understand the Assamese and Bengali languages.
For the rest of India, Dr. Hazarika (the “Dr.” is not one of those bestowed upon cinema, cultural and political personalities by universities whose administrators are usually keen to rub shoulders with the recipients, but one had earned by completing a Ph.D from Columbia University in the early 1950s on how cultural tools can be used to spread the reach of education) is known for his fabulous music in Kalpana Lajmi’s “Rudali”, particularly...

Tinsukia (Assam), Nov 6: He is no more, yet his voice filled the streets of many parts of Assam Sunday, as bereaved fans of music maestro Bhupen Hazarika pulled out their collection of the bard's evergreen songs and soaked themselves in his golden voice once again.
In this small town in upper Assam, a music shop played aloud some of Hazarika's most loved songs.
'I still can't believe Bhupen da (or elder brother, as he was endearingly called) is no more. Just listen to that voice...it gives you the gooseflesh,' said Arpan Deka, owner of the shop, as Hazarika's 'Manuhe Manuhor Baabe' (For Man) played in the backdrop.
