Amazon Prime Video has ordered the four-part coming-of-age docuseries Always Jane, which spotlights transgender teenager Jane Noury and her family as she nears her high school graduation and prepares for college. The project hails from Amazon Studios, Mutt Film and Union Editorial. Jonathan C. Hyde directs.
Amazon’s description is as follows: “Jane Noury lives with her family in rural New Jersey, and like any teenager, must balance friends, family, and school. While today’s political and social climate may not seem like the easiest time for a transgender teenager to grow up, you haven’t met her family, the Nourys. They wear their hearts on their sleeves and find irreverent humor in daily life, while Jane sets her sights on life beyond her family.”
The docuseries’ subject Jane is pursuing a career in modeling and acting and recently appeared in Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Vol. 3 fashion show. She...

“Succession” is one of HBO’s most acclaimed drama series and an Emmy frontrunner in 2020, and its popularity has been bolstered in part by its addicting opening credits sequence. The 90-second sequence is set to Nicholas Britell’s Emmy-winning original theme music and cuts together footage of the New York City skyline with home video footage of the Roy family. The grainy home videos remind viewers about the privilege and isolation of the Roy family at the start of each episode. It turns out this now-classic opening credits sequence owes a lot of credit David Fincher, who crafted virtually the same sequence to open his 1997 mystery thriller “The Game.” Both openings have been embedded in videos below.
An eagle-eyed Reddit user recently noticed the similarities between the “Succession” and “The Game” opening credits and brought it to the attention of viewers. Fincher’s 1997 movie begins with grainy home video footage...

Now this is a list that could result in a lot of fascinating dissection and thanks to HitFix it comes to our attention almost three years after it was originally released back in 2012, celebrating the Motion Picture Editors Guild's 75th anniversary. Over at HitFix, Kris Tapley asks, "Is this news to anyone elsec" Um, yes, I find it immensely interesting and a perfect starting point for anyone looking to further explore the art of film editing. In an accompanying article we get the particulars concerning what films were eligible and how films were to be considered: In our Jan-feb 12 issue, we asked Guild members to vote on what they consider to be the Best Edited Films of all time. Any feature-length film from any country in the world was eligible. And by "Best Edited," we explained, we didn't just mean picture; sound, music and mixing were to be considered as well.

A random bit of researching on a Tuesday night led me to something I didn't know existed: The Motion Picture Editors Guild's list of the 75 best-edited films of all time. It was a feature in part celebrating the Guild's 75th anniversary in 2012. Is this news to anyone else? I confess to having missed it entirely. Naturally, I had to dig in. What was immediately striking to me about the list — which was decided upon by the Guild membership and, per instruction, was considered in terms of picture and sound editorial as opposed to just the former — was the most popular decade ranking. Naturally, the 1970s led with 17 mentions, but right on its heels was the 1990s. I wouldn't have expected that but I happen to agree with the assessment. Thelma Schoonmaker's work on "Raging Bull" came out on top, an objectively difficult choice to dispute, really. It was so transformative,...

It seems that whilst Disney’s animation arm continues to be a big hit amongst audiences, some its live-action releases can’t seem to catch a break. Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful was a success for the studio in the spring, but Gore Verbinski’s summer blockbuster, The Lone Ranger, sadly seems to have fallen upon a similar fate as Andrew Stanton’s John Carter did last year.
One factor the two movies have both faced is the bad press. The impact of reviews is far from guaranteed – plenty of films receive terrible reviews from critics but are welcomed with open arms by audiences, and vice versa – and yet, with high-profile movies like these where word of mouth goes in place of an already established world, riding a wave of negative reviews is that much harder to overcome.

The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

Disney's biggest gamble of 2013, Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger, has officially gone into production. There was a point I didn't think this movie would actually happen, but here it is. Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will lead the pack of actors into the wild west.
The reason I say this movie is a gamble is because Disney is spending $216 million dollars to make the movie, and no Western in the history of cinema has ever made that much money. The highest grossing western of all time is Dances With Wolves, and that only brought in $184 million. I can't believe Disney is pumping this kind of money into a western, because I don't think it's going to make that kind of money back in theaters. Hell, Favreau's Cowboy & Aliens only made a little over $100 million and that mixed both sci-fi and western elements! That should have been a blockbuster, and it wasn't.

After a rather bumpy road to get there, we’ve just been informed by Disney that their new joint venture with Jerry Bruckheimer ‘The Lone Ranger’ has gone into production today. The movie is set to be directed by Gore Verbinski and stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale and Helena Bonham Carter.
The script is penned by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Eric Aronson and Justin Haythe.
More as we get it but the full info is below for your viewing pleasure. Excited to see this one but that’s probably just because it’s a ‘Jerry’ movie. Please let it be better than Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice!

By now you've undoubtedly confirmed for yourself that Brad Pitt is not in David Fincher's The Social Network... Unless you count that "Tyler Durden" Facebook profile on a computer screen in Jesse Eisenberg's room (blink and you'll miss it but I did catch it the second time through).
A Fincher sandwich. Brangelina brung the bread.
If you foolishly expected Brad to pop up for a cameo, you're forgiven on account of your totally understandable great love of David Fincher movies, in which Brad often stars (Se7en, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). They're friends in real life and only one year apart in age. But for now, no new movie collaborations are on the docket.

Films being screened for other filmmakers during the editing process isn’t nothing new. It happens all the time. It’s an important part of the creative process because the original filmmakers are getting a fresh set of eyes on the material, and they have a good suggestion on how to solve that third act problem.
Word has been slowly trickling out about Tron: Legacy and its recent screenings for friends & filmmakers and the film’s re-shoots. MILL VALLEY, Calif. -- Departing from the dark, twisted sensibility of their feature Twin Falls Idaho, in which Mark and Michael Polish seemed to have channeled the Coen brothers and a dash of David Lynch, the duo's latest effort, The Astronaut Farmer, is goofy, wholesome and, well, sweet. Despite some droll humor and on-target political jabs delivered deadpan by a uniformly strong cast, Astronaut often is too corny for its own good; it could have used more of those zingy lines.
Shot in 33 days for $13 million, a markedly larger budget than they have worked with before, the Polishes do a lot with a little by Hollywood standards to make a polished, mainstream, thoroughly quirky family entertainment. (The brothers collaborated on the script; Michael Polish directed.) If marketed properly, it could be a solid boxoffice draw for families, especially those with small children. It will have a one-week run at the end of the year to qualify for Oscar consideration, and a wider theatrical release is scheduled for early next year.
An ambling pace bogs down this archetypal albeit predictable story about Charlie Farmer (played with sunny optimism by pitch-perfect Billy Bob Thornton), who is indeed a small-town farmer and a charming oddball. Against all odds and the laws of gravity, Charlie achieves his impossible dream: He launches into space in a homemade rocket he built in his barn.
Adults craving more challenging content will be out of luck, but even for those who don't wholly buy into the film's "if we don't have our dreams, we have nothing" ethos, there are many small pleasures to savor. Bruce Willis, looking heroic in a leather bomber jacket, makes a stylish appearance in a small role as Farmer's old buddy, a space shuttle commander.
Thornton, eminently watchable throughout, even while orbiting around Earth -- the CG effects are well done here -- gives a wry, warm performance as a beautiful loser, a disappointed former military pilot and would-be astronaut who dropped out of the space program before he got his space shot. The actor, with his gentle Southern twang, embodies the character's humanity, dogged determination and basic goodness without winking at the audience.
Virginia Madsen is radiant as the supportive, long-suffering wife of a dreamer who drives his family into debt and makes them the object of ridicule. It's a thankless role, but Madsen makes the most of it.
Veteran J.K. Simmons does his evil best as the heavy, the head of the FAA -- or the Dream Police, as one tabloid labels the agency -- who stands between Charlie and liftoff.
Cinematographer M. David Mullen does wonders with New Mexico's light and dazzling sunsets, evoking the romance and bleakness of the Southwest. As Elton John's Rocket Man plays under the final credits, the ubiquitous Jay Leno does a mock interview with Farmer. It's a graceful parting touch.
