Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

This article contains spoilers for Psych.
It’s easy to forget sometimes that Psych is a show that often involves murder. The procedural comedy-drama is well known for its running gags, irreverent humor, and the absurd scenarios that faux psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend/crime-solving partner Gus (Dulé Hill) often found themselves in, all of which can overshadow the seriousness of the crimes they’re trying to solve. However, the series proves it’s worthy of the drama genre descriptor more often than we realize when it allows itself to go to darker places than we expect.
The most obvious example of this in the series is the Yin/Yang arc. Shawn and Gus go up against these serial killers several times throughout the series, and often find themselves and those they care about directly in harms’ way. Like many serial killers, Yin (Peter Weller...

HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered in January comes with the subtitle “True Detective: Night Country” and, while still part of the franchise, it’s the first to not have the involvement of creator Nic Pizzolato – other than his executive producer credit. It was instead developed by Issa Lopez who wrote (or co-wrote) and directed all six episodes, and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in an Alaskan town investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. Let’s re-examine the three previous seasons of “True Detective” at the Emmys – which garnered a combined total of 22 nominations and five wins – to determine possible nominations in categories for the current season.
Here is the complete Emmys history for the first three seasons of “True Detective”:

“True Detective” season four, officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” has returned the HBO crime series to its former glories after seasons two and three disappointed. This entry follows Jodie Foster as a police chief investigating the vanishing of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
One of many things, along with the eerie town and Lovecraftian seasoning, that makes this series so excellent is its cast. Two-time Oscar-winner Foster is joined by a trio of other veterans — Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and John Hawkes — plus a pair of newcomers: former boxer Kali Reis and rising star Finn Bennett. Bennett plays police Officer Peter Prior, the son of Hawkes’ Captain Prior, and he turns in a nuanced, memorable performance. Critics have agreed, too, he makes the strongest impression amongst the series’ supporting cast.

“True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

HBO’s “True Detective” has returned with a roaring fourth season starring two-time Oscar-winner Jodie Foster. Officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” the season follows Foster’s police chief as she investigates the disappearance of eight men from a research station in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes and newcomer Kali Reis all shine in this acclaimed edition of the franchise, which we predict will compete in all the major categories at this year’s Emmys. However, before we look ahead to this season’s Emmy chances, let’s take a look back at the show’s history with the TV academy.
The first season, which was classified as a drama series, got off to a rocketing start with 12 nominations (including duelling bids for stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey). It won five of those races. However, seasons two and three, which were re-classified to be limited series,...

On March 21, 2004, HBO introduced audiences to the frontier outpost of Deadwood, where the Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane series ran for three seasons. Fifteen years after its premiere it was revived as a standalone movie on the premium cabler. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review of season one is below:
David Milch, executive producer of NYPD Blue and, before that, Hill Street Blues, has spent years looking at society from the perspective of those who enforce its laws and impose order. His new series, Deadwood, imagines a world without law, a world ruled only by the conscience of individuals, many of whom have none. The result is a Western unlike most others. It is brutal, passionate, heroic, tragic, blanketed by coarseness and always fascinating, though some times morbidly so.
Although it would be just as solid a drama if it were cut from whole cloth, Deadwood is deeply rooted in historical reality.

This article contains spoilers for the ending of Lost.
Hiroyuki Sanada, star and producer of FX’s excellent miniseries Shōgun, is one of the most successful Japanese actors working in Hollywood today. English-speaking audiences have to come to know and appreciate the Tokyo-born performer through his roles in films such as The Last Samurai, Speed Racer, The Wolverine, Army of the Dead, and John Wick: Chapter 4.
TV nerds (including yours truly) had an entirely different introduction to Hiroyuki Sanada, however. For us, Sanada’s Western pop culture career begins with the final season of classic ABC drama Lost.
Despite what you may have heard about its ending Lost is one of the best genre series to ever grace network television. It also, admittedly, wasn’t perfect. And its simultaneously ingenious and infuriating use of Sanada in its sixth and final season is a perfect microcosm of the show overall.

HBO’s officially renewed True Detective for season five. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, was the most-watched season overall, drawing in 12.7 million viewers. It was also the first season that focused on women in the leading roles, and the first with Issa López in charge as writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer.
Showrunner Issa López will return in the same capacity for season five, and has just signed a new multiyear overall deal with HBO. The deal means López will create new content, including season five, for HBO and Max.
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” stated Issa López. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true.

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.

This post contains spoilers for "True Detective: Night Country."
Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are the focal points of "True Detective: Night Country" for good reason. To witness a clash between two equally strong personalities is nothing short of riveting, especially when Liz and Naravarro make a solid team, despite their innate differences. The two women have been dealing with their inner demons in markedly different ways so far — while Danvers suppresses her trauma with impulsive, headstrong actions, Navarro suffers in silence and channels her rage into solving the Tsalal/Annie K. case. The two women have been dealing with their inner demons in markedly different ways so far — while Danvers suppresses her trauma with impulsive, headstrong actions, Navarro suffers in silence and channels her rage into solving the Tsalal/Annie K. case. However, there is a third individual in Ennis who is integral to the investigation and has seldom gotten the credit: Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), and his single-minded dedication to the case needs to be talked about if we are to discuss the complicated web of conspiracies gripping the town.

This article contains spoilers for True Detective: Night Country episode 6.
Coming in at a full two episodes shorter than previous seasons, True Detective: Night Country has a lot to accomplish in its sixth and final episode.
Going into “Part 6,” viewers still don’t know who killed Annie Kowtok (Nivi Pedersen), what happened to the dead scientists (plus the missing Raymond Clark), or what’s going on with the shady partnership between Tsalal Arctic Research Station and Silver Sky Mining. And that’s not even to mention all the spooky ghosts and ghouls prowling around Ennis, Alaska.
Thankfully, the True Detective: Night Country finale provides answers to most of these questions while giving us some tools to make educated guesses about the others. Here is what happens in True Detective season 4 episode 6 and what it all means.
Where Has Raymond Clark Been Hiding?

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Part 6,” the season finale of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” now streaming on Max.
After flirting with the supernatural all season, the finale of “True Detective: Night Country” revealed that the show’s killers were very much real human beings.
And the two women at the center of creator Issa López’s story — the true detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) — not only solve the mystery of what happened in their town of Ennis, Alaska, but each arrive at a place of personal peace. After the individual torments that plagued them throughout the six-episode series, Navarro and Danvers find, according to López, a “love, the non-romantic love” that heals both of them, and resets them so they can go on — even if Navarro’s fate is somewhat nebulous.
But back to the mystery. As Navarro had intuited immediately,...

Note: The following story discusses spoilers for the “True Detective: Night Country” finale.
“True Detective: Night Country” wrapped up plenty of loose ends with its finale on Sunday, but unlike its preceding seasons, the Alaska-set mystery didn’t culminate with a clear-cut ending that answered all the mystery’s questions, nor with the perpetrator of the inciting violence going to jail.
While the finale built on the season’s intensity with a dramatic foot chase and fight, creator and showrunner Issa López opted for a more subtle conclusion that gave detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) enough satisfaction to “walk away quietly.”
“I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes, which is part of why I’m doing this job now, and the best stories of Sherlock Holmes, the ones I love the most, are the ones where he finds the killer, and decides to simply walk away quietly,...

"This is a world where nothing is solved. Someone once told me that time is a flat circle. Everything we have ever done or will do, we're gonna do over and over and over again."
Matthew McConaughey's Rustin Cohle utters these words in season 1 of "True Detective," underlining the Theory of Eternal Recurrence, a thought experiment meant to test out one's emotional response to a never-ending, cyclical loop. Rust's words are tinted by a sense of nihilism, as he is at a point where he believes that there is no way to break through this loop, where evil will always find a way to manifest in cyclical ways throughout time. True Detective: Night Country has been an atypical season of HBO‘s crime anthology for numerous reasons.
For starters, this fourth season is the first to receive its own subtitle, with “Night Country” capturing the pervading darkness of northern Alaska. Night Country is also the first True Detective season to not feature the involvement of original creator Nic Pizzolatto. Stepping in as showrunner is indie auteur Issa López who grafted her own vision of two female detectives solving an icy mystery onto the usual True Detective format. The biggest difference between Night Country and a “normal” season of True Detective, however, may only becoming apparent to folks this week as episode 6 marks the sudden conclusion of this story.
That’s right: unlike seasons 1, 2, and 3, True Detective season 4 features six episodes rather than the usual eight. That should come as either devastating news to viewers just getting into the case...

Sunday marks the final episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” Issa Lopez’s triumphant revival of the HBO series originally created by Nic Pizzolatto. A six-year old murder, five-body “corpsicle,” and chilling hints of the supernatural intertwine throughout the season, all of it made exponentially more chilling and suspenseful by the long night looming over Ennis, Alaska.
So, as Police Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) would say: Ask the question (cue Kali Reis’ Navarro rolling her eyes). Who’s the killer? Too simple. What’s the motive? Now we’re cooking. What were the men of Tsalal hiding? There’s something there…

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "True Detective: Night Country."
Is "True Detective" messing with us, or are all those major fan theories out there officially off the mark? In fairness, there have been a few loose threads intentionally left dangling over our heads throughout the season, driving speculation among viewers into a fever pitch over all the potential explanations (supernatural or otherwise) that could be offered by what's sure to be a gripping finale. But perhaps that's the one downside of a series drawing comparisons to a mystery-box show like "Lost." When certain developments hint at something much more mundane, fans can't help but feel like the wind has just been sucked right out of their sails. That seems to be the case with episode 5, which offered up one possible hint at what that creepy-looking spiral symbol really means.

This post contains spoilers for the fifth episode of "True Detective: Night Country."
A lot is going down in "True Detective: Night Country" at the moment, as the mysterious Tsalal fiasco and the unsolved Annie K murder have been proven to have closer ties than ever before. With a ton of leads pointing towards dead ends, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) finally made a breakthrough after cornering Otis Heiss (Klaus Tange), a drifter who drew the map for the ice caves before 1998. Thanks to the efforts of Officer Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), Danvers links the fate of Anders Lund with that of Heiss, whose corneas burned and ears ruptured after a terrible mining accident years ago. When Danvers finds Heiss, he utters the phrase "Night Country," and hints at how it might be an actual space linked to the horrifying events in Ennis.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for True Detective: Night Country Season 4, Episode 5, “Part 5.”] True Detective: Night Country took some insane turns in the final moments of its fifth episode, which brings viewers one step closer to solving the mystery behind Annie K’s (Nivi Pedersen) murder and the deaths of the Tsalal Scientists. After getting caught on camera crossing the borders of Silver Sky Mines territory, Detective Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) was given a strong warning from Connelly (Christopher Eccleston) to stop pursuing answers surrounding the scientists and Annie K. He also shared the official death report for the scientists, claiming it was an avalanche that took them out, but Danvers isn’t convinced, especially having learned that Tsalal’s research and the mines were so closely linked with pollution stats possibly being compromised along the way. (Credit: HBO) Meanwhile, Silver Sky Mining Company’s Kate McKitterick (Dervla Kirwan) has an interesting exchange with Hank (John Hawkes), telling him ...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Part 5,” the fifth episode of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” now streaming on Max.
Poor, wrong-headed Hank — with his broken “90 Day Fiancé” heart, and his thwarted dreams of being police chief — is dead. And by the hand of his son, Peter, no less.
At the end of “Part 5″ — the penultimate episode of creator Issa López’s “True Detective: Night Country” — investigators Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are about to defy direct orders. In the episode’s final moments, they’re heading off on a New Year’s Eve quest to find the caves where Annie Kowtok died — to try to solve her murder, as well as the mysterious deaths of the Tsalal scientists.
But the scene that preceded that coda was the most pivotal of the series so far.

While Jodie Foster and Kali Reis’ Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro are the two detectives at the heart of creator Issa López‘s True Detective: Night Country, there is another vital twosome at the center of the series: Hank and Pete Prior, the father and son duo who both serve as police officers in Ennis, Alaska.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he’s not creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show. He has made his lack of involvement with the new season very clear on social media, where he even went so far as to refer to one element of the new episodes as “stupid”. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season. To find out what Lopez thought of Pizzolatto’s comments, Vulture reached out to her – and did get a response.

“True Detective: Night Country” reached 2.7 million viewers with its third episode on Sunday night, which notably aired in competition with the NFC championship game. This marks a 5% increase compared to the previous episode.
The season has now seen two consecutive weeks of growth, as Episode 2’s 2.6 million viewers on Jan. 22 marked a 28% improvement from the premiere’s 2 million viewers. (These numbers come from a combination of Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel as well as streams on Max through each episode’s first night of availability). Additionally, these episodes continue to grow on Max: Episode 1 jumped from 2 million to 7.5 million viewers after one first week and now sits at 10.7 million viewers, while one week of streaming availability for Episode 2 boosted it from 2.6 million to 8 million viewers.
Thus far, “True Detective: Night Country” is outpacing “Succession” Season 4 and “The White Lotus” Season 2, HBO’s most recent comparable titles.

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses plot points from Episode 3 of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” titled “Part 3,” now streaming on Max.
In the second episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” Rose (Fiona Shaw), the Ennis resident who led the police to the corpsicle of scientists, warns Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) about getting involved with the investigation. She says, “Maybe leave this one for someone else, Missy.” Unfortunately, Navarro did not heed Rose’s advice. Drawn to the case and determined to connect it with a six-year-old cold case, the death of Indigenous midwife and activist Annie Kowtok, Navarro has thrust herself headfirst into the inquest, even teaming back up with her arch nemesis, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), Ennis’ chief of police.
On the surface, the mystery standing at the center of “True Detective: Night Country” is the eight men who vanished from the local arctic research station in the fictional mining town of Ennis,...

Viewership of “True Detective: Night Country” saw a 28% increase with its newest installment on Sunday night. After the season premiered with 2 million viewers last week, Episode 2 reached 2.6 million viewers.
These numbers, which combine Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO with first-party data from HBO regarding streams on Max through each episode’s first night, represent success for “Night Country,” which is the fourth installment of “True Detective.” For comparison, the majorly acclaimed fourth season of “Succession” premiered in with 2.3 million viewers — while enjoying the benefit of concluding its third season more recently while “True Detective” has been off the air for five years —then dipped down to 2 million with its second episode. Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” which more closely matches “True Detective’s” anthology style, premiered with 1.5 million viewers, and while data is unavailable regarding Episode 2, Episode 6 set a then-series high of 2.3 million viewers, which “Night Country” has already surpassed.

If you were as captivated by True Detective: Night Country‘s “corpsicle” as we were, you might have missed an important detail. Season 4’s ghoulishly-named icicle filled with dead scientists was short one genius.
As discovered by the end of episode 2, the corpsicle contains only six bodies, which is notably two fewer than the eight scientists who were working at the Tsalal research center. One of those scientists, Anders Lund, is barely alive but accounted for. Another is missing. His name is Raymond Clark and he just so happens to have been known to date Annie K, a local indigenous woman whose murder Detective Navarro (Kali Reis) is hellbent on solving.
Well friends, it sounds like we have our first real suspect. And based on the first trailer for True Detective season 4 episode 3, the search for Raymond Clark is going to be a grueling one. Give it a look...
