Stop saying Sean Edwards is a quitter.
Sean’s tribe lost immunity during the fourth episode of “Survivor 45.” They went to tribal council. He was voted out. That’s literally how the show works. But clearly I’m in the minority on this one, especially when you look at all of the anti-Sean outrage on social media.
In case you missed the episode in question, a tribe swap resulted in Lulu member Sean joining four Reba players at their camp. After personally losing his fourth straight immunity challenge, the 35-year-old school principal from Utah expressed his desire to return home to his loving husband at tribal council, telling his new tribe mates to “write [his] name down” in order for them to remain “Reba strong.” At the time, Jeff Probst accused him of essentially “engineering a quit” — and for the record, the host seemed quite irritated, especially as this was coming...

The collective gasp heard on August 23, 2000 was 51 million people learning that Survivor’s first jury just awarded the game’s first villain $1 million. One of the people who’d cast the deciding vote in Richard Hatch’s favor, Sue Hawk, had just called him “an arrogant, pompous, human being,” and in another of the Survivor finale’s iconic moments, referred to him to as a snake “who knowingly went after prey.”
Richard Hatch’s journey to that million dollars — and to becoming competition reality TV’s first villain, a snake willing to eat whatever was in its path — began the first day of Survivor: Borneo. After the tribe reached their beach, exhausted from actually paddling in, he perched himself on a tree branch, sitting physically and metaphorically above everyone else, and watching the other seven players’ cross-talk about building a shelter.

Some Survivor contestants will stop at nothing in their attempt to win the game. Things can get pretty ugly as castaways fight to be the last one standing in the popular CBS reality series. So, perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a few cast members have bent – or broken – the rules back in the real world. After returning home, these six Survivor players have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

Richard Hatch capably played the role of the villain on Survivor’s first season back in 2000. His ruthless approach to the competition meant he walked away the winner. But a few years later, a jury convicted him of failing to pay taxes on his $1 million in prize money from the show. He served 51 months in federal prison. But the stint behind...

Survivor is not an easy game. Producers dump castaways on a deserted beach with minimal resources and force them to compete in brutal physical challenges. They are starving, suffering from bug bites and other ailments, and are subject to harsh weather conditions. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that numerous players have quit over the show’s 44 seasons. But do the Survivor contestants still get paid if they forfeit their spot in the game?

Every Survivor fan knows that the Sole Survivor gets paid $1 million (before taxes) for winning their season. But what the CBS reality competition series doesn’t disclose on air is that producers pay the other contestants just for being on the show.
CinemaBlend reports that the first boot receives $3,500, and the total rises as the placement increases.

The “reality” portion of reality television has been debated over the years. Some shows are painstakingly obviously fake, while others feel like they are as objective as any Hollywood production can be. And Survivor is a show that leans more toward the latter. Most elements of the CBS reality competition series feel real (even though some fans argue otherwise), but there is one rehearsed aspect of Survivor.
The ‘Survivor 44’ cast | Photo: Robert Voets/CBS ‘Survivor’ has been one of CBS’s top-performing shows for 23 years
Survivor premiered on May 31, 2000, on CBS, and the show was an immediate hit. Viewers everywhere were engrossed with this first group of castaways who — Gasp! — would eat a rat on national television. But the strategic gameplay, contestants like Kelly Wigglesworth, Rudy Boesch, Sue Hawk, and Richard Hatch, and the series’ concept had everyone talking.

With over 43 seasons of Survivor, it’s difficult to choose which ones stand out the most. There have been numerous entertaining seasons full of impressive gameplay, dynamic casts, and shocking Tribal Councils that have left us with our jaws on the floor. But we’ve narrowed the list of all-time great seasons to five must-sees for any Survivor fan.
Jeff Probst | Photo: Robert Voets/CBS 5. ‘Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X’
Including Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X on our list of the top five Survivor seasons might be a controversial pick, but we wholeheartedly stand by it.
Adam Klein is one of the most underrated winners (aside from Vecepia Towery). After all, he is one of five castaways to win the show unanimously, and he played a smart (yet chaotic at times) strategic and social game. Plus, Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X introduced us to multiple memorable players, including Zeke Smith,...

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since CBS censors had to pixelate Richard Hatch‘s naked body on “Survivor: Borneo”? The popular castaway walked around in his “birthday suit” to celebrate his 39th bday on the ninth episode of that iconic first season, which aired July 26, 2000. Watch the “Survivor” flashback video above. It’s since become one of the most well-known and controversial moments throughout the reality TV show’s 40 seasons, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment.
There were only eight castaways left in the merged Rattana tribe when Richard celebrated his birthday sans clothing: original Tagi members Richard, Kelly Wiglesworth, Rudy Boesch, Susan Hawk and Sean Kenniff and original Pagong members Jenna Lewis, Gervase Peterson and Colleen Haskell. Richard of course would eventually go on to win the show’s first-ever $1 million check (see the winners list).

May 31, 2020 marked the 20-year anniversary of when a little show called “Survivor” first premiered on television. To mark the occasion, Sonja Christopher, now age 83, is breaking her silence on what it meant to be the first person ever voted off of CBS’s reality TV show. “Oh my God, what an experience!” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I’m so fortunate to have had it. And I’ve learned lessons about how to treat it, regard it, live with it, and go with the flow.” Watch a video retrospective of Sonja’s “Survivor” journey below.
As it turns out, Sonja is still a fan of the show after two decades and has some choice words for the winner of Season 40, Tony Vlachos. “He was such a loose cannon, it seemed,” she declared. “And his hiding in the tree almost seemed laughable. But it turns out apparently it worked for him!” She...

In advance of this Wednesday’s two-hour premiere of “Survivor: Winners at War,” which starts at 8 p.m. Et/Pt. CBS aired last week a special look back titled “Survivor at 40.” Many of the flashbacks that were highlighted from past seasons featured more than a few standout castaways — including some of the 20 Sole Survivors who will be returning for the special anniversary edition of the show.
They ranged from devious Boston Rob Mariano proposing to wife-to-be Amber right before she was named the winner of Season 8 to nerdy fave favorite Christian Hubicki from Season 37 hanging on a narrow perch for dear life in the blazing sun for five hours just to prove he could win an individual immunity challenge.

Leave it to Jeff Probst, four-time Emmy-winning host of CBS’s “Survivor,” to perfectly state how the show’s fans are feeling after Rudy Boesch‘s death was announced this weekend. “The ‘Survivor’ family has lost a legend,” Probst tweeted about the fan-favorite contestant who died following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. “Rudy Boesch passed at the age of 91. He played in the first season of ‘Survivor’ at the age of 72. He is one is the most iconic and adored players of all time. And he served our country as a 45-year Navy Seal. Rudy is a true American hero.”

In HitFix's new feature "Waxing Episodic," we reflect on an episode of television we'll never forget. On May 31, 2000, I watched the premiere of "Survivor." I was edgy. At that point, the "Survivor" audience was just me and 15.5 million of my fellow early adapters. The next week, the "Survivor" audience went to 18 million and then to 23.25 million. Before "Empire" made our minds boggle at the mere idea of a show actually gaining viewers each week, there was "Survivor," which started with a 6.1 rating among adults 18-49 and was at a 12.7 rating by its penultimate installment. [I actually missed that first finale, which averaged nearly 52 million viewers, because I was in the process of moving to Los Angeles. Nobody tell me who won!] Last week's 15th anniversary marked a good time to dust off my "Survivor" (or "Survivor: Borneo" or "Survivor: Pulau Tiga") DVDs and our frequent -- when we happen to have the time -- "Waxing Episodic" feature was a perfect time to reflect on how the game has changed and how it remains the same. I contemplated...

Pre-credit sequence. It's Night 35 and the Top 5 castaways return to camp. Carolyn is giddy. Mike is incredulous. Rodney is offended that Carolyn didn't tell him about the Idol, which is funny since Carolyn's offended that Rodney voted for her. They agree that without Idols or advantages remaining, everybody wants Mike out, which is especially funny since Mike was the only person to support Carolyn at the previous Tribal. But loyalty doesn't go very far when you're this deep into "Survivor." Mother-Lover. Tonight's Reward is an individual challenge and it's really only worthwhile if Rodney loses. No Rewards for Rodney! It's a complicated challenge involving tiles, a number puzzle, shuffle board and other stuff. Wanna know what they're playing for? Love! Carolyn's husband comes out and she cries. It's a fairy tale marriage. Everybody cries. Mike's mom comes out and he cries. It's a fairy tale mother-son relationship.

The results of a CBS.com poll of "Survivor" fans are now on newsstands, as part of a special commemorative issue of CBS Watch! magazine. The 100-page, full-color magazine is a pretty great overview of the series, except for the absolute wrongness of its polls. That's especially true for its "all time best seasons" poll. Yes, ranking "Survivor" seasons is about as difficult as stacking cooked spaghetti noodles, and about as useful. It's mostly good for creating disagreement. What one viewer values, another dismisses--but that's one of the many reasons why the series has survived for 30 seasons. There's a lot to argue about. Even looking at objective data about Survivor winners and cast members can prompt discussion. So, here are the results of CBS' poll, and one fan's thoughts and arguments about why the other fans' collective wisdom often seems screwed up. #1: Survivor Heroes vs. Villains, season 20, 2010 Why this...

"Survivor" isn't a show for quitters and yet many players have quit on "Survivor" over 28 seasons. Players have quit with broken bones, nasty infections, heart problems, stomach problems and whatever those two things were that caused Colton to quit. Jenna quit to be near her ailing mother. Susan quit because Richard Hatch rubbed against her. Various levels of in-game misery caused Janu, Kathy, NaOnka and Purple Kelly to quit. On Wednesday (March 26) night's "Survivor: Cagayan," Lindsey Ogle quit because of her concerns that if she continued to spend time with gloating Bostonian Trish, something bad might happen. Jeff Probst hailed this as a strange sort of "Survivor" first. As a result, the Solana tribe lost Cliff and Lindsey, which Trish and Tony hailed as a huge triumph, even if they were now way down in numbers. Solana subsequently won two straight challenges, which as either a fluke or addition by subtraction.

It may not quite equal Sue Hawk's "rats and snakes" speech from the original "Survivor" Final Tribal Council, but Monica Culpepper had a moment in Sunday's "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" finale that stands as its own definitive statement-of-values. Well into a Final Tribal that became a referendum on Monica's sincerity and her possible ulterior motives, the "One World" veteran just broke. "Have you all never met a nice person? While I would have preferred a Gotham Central TV series, Fox has won the bidding war over Gotham, a series that follows future police commissioner Jim Gordon in the days before he meets Batman.
Jack Coleman, who I think might be the only person to play two different gay characters on the same night of TV (thanks to gay roles on The Office and The Vampire Diaries) will appear in a recurring role on the upcoming season of Scandal.
In news that makes me happy, FX has ordered a second season of The Bridge. I’m looking forward to seeing Sonya and Marco continue to be TV’s oddest odd-couple cops. I’m also hoping they find a way to keep Matthew Lilard around. He makes more sense than some of The Bridge‘s other peripheral characters.

If you heard an “Uuuugggh” across the internet, that probably was because AMC announced that the final season of Mad Men would be split in half. It’s a move Vulture says makes AMC look desperate, at least when combined with the news of spin-off series for Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. So far, AMC hasn’t been able to find new shows to replace the three dramas that put the channel on the map so it trying to get more out of those three shows.
Deadline reports that scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis is teaming with horror director Steve Miner (Miner worked on the first Friday the 13th and directed the second and third installments, he went on to direct Curtis in Halloween H20) for a horror-themed pilot for ABC Family. Screen Australia has granted more than $276,000 in funding to support the development of 10 feature films, including projects by the co-writer of local smash The Sapphires and the team behind Wish You Were Here.
It is a small financial lifeline for the industry which is no longer receiving drama production investment from the national government agency after it spent its entire annual $42 million budget in just six months.
Among the new feature film projects to receive funding is comedy-drama The Grip, written by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires). It follows five young Australian businessmen who discover the secret to winning the pokies and develop Robin Hood-like reputations. David Field (The Combination) will direct.
Writer Felicity Price and director Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) have also received funding to develop a new (as yet) untitled thriller. It follows social misfit Vincent, who holds a flame for 17-year-old Amber, but when his hopes are crushed he acts impulsively,...

There are certain images from seasons past of Survivor that you simply can’t get out of your head. Perhaps it is Sue Hawk’s infamous “rat and snake” speech at Borneo’s final Tribal Council. Maybe it is Jenna Morasca and Heidi Strobel stripping for peanut butter and chocolate in The Amazon. Or it could be poor gullible Erik (or Brandon) giving away his immunity… and then promptly being voted out. (Whoops!) Over 12 years and 24 seasons, the reality show has provided a bevy of memorable moments. So we asked the cast of season 25, Survivor: Philippines, to give us their favorite Survivor moment ever.

With the news that Willie Hantz, the younger brother of Survivor villain Russell Hantz, will join the cast of Big Brother this season, the birth of a new reality villain dynasty is upon us. Not only is Willie (pictured, right) the spitting image of his brother, but he is shaping his persona within his brother’s mold. He told Zap2It, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to win half a million dollars. Whatever it takes. If my mama was on the island with me, or on the show with me, I would vote her out first because she would get sympathy votes.

According to a list of facts about Walker, Texas Ranger star Chuck Norris, there is no theory of evolution; just a list of creatures that Chuck Norris has allowed to live. Apparently, Gop candidate Newt Gingrich has made it onto that list, after the action star endorsed Gingrich in his column for conservative news website Wnd.com. Although it was suspected that Norris would endorse "friend" Rick Perry for the 2012 campaign, after Perry dropped out of the race Thursday, Norris published an op-ed piece urging readers to stand behind Gingrich, writing that the former House Speaker was "the best man left out on the battlefield to outwit, outplay, and outlast Obama and his campaign machine." Norris, who endorsed Mike Huckabee in the 2008 election, then went on to continue to quote Survivor by reciting Sue Hawk's famous "snake and rat" speech from the [...]...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of Survivor: Nicaragua - Episode 9.
Last week we learned that it’s preferential to keep an admitted thief who is likely insane, and a crotchety old man who can barely walk, over a single twenty-something woman with no alliance. We’ve also learned this season that keeping the crazy people over the proven leaders is a good tactic as well. The Season of Idiots continues:
My Random Thoughts:
- In the opening segment, The Voice of The Blue Shirt warned us that “the feud between Jane and Marty has reached critical mass.” Look, I understand that these two are throwing barbs back and forth (Marty a little more aggressively), but up until this point, hasn’t it all really been just verbal? Is “critical mass” really the right term? It’s not really the Hatfields vs. The McCoys. I think the more appropriate voice-over of...

Survivor's 20th anniversary party/reunion Saturday night will draw at least 250 past cast members, according to the show's host. Those attending include season one's final four--Richard Hatch, Kelly Wiglesworth, Rudy Boesch, and Sue Hawk, and the entire season 20 cast. Jeff Probst tweeted "you can probably visualize the insanity this party will bring," and wrote yesterday that the "party for TV critics this Sat. 250 survivors confirmed." Jeff Probst is on Twitter now, and today he had some breaking news. 250 cast members from all of Survivor's many seasons will reunite this Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena. This includes the final four contestants from the very first Survivor: Richard Hatch (let's hope he asks if he can be interviewed), Kelly Wiglesworth, Rudy Boesch, and Susan Hawk.
I watched that very first show. In fact, the night of the finale my power went out just when they were going to announce the winner so my roommate and I had to get his portable Sony TV and watch it on that.
They should have a giant, super-sized Survivor where all 250 compete for "The Ultimate Survivor" trophy. Give the winner $100 million. Sure, it would probably take three years for the show to end, but I bet people would watch. Set it on the moon.

Bree was a homeschooled, angsty teen who posted a weekly videoblog talking about dating, family and school. Until obsessed fans discovered her pleas to the camera were fictitious — a film school project gone viral. The actress who played Lonelygirl, Jessica Rose, went on to make some other Web series (“Sorority Forever” and “Poor Paul”) and had a short stint on...
