Mumbai, Oct 7 (Ians) The portrayal of women in Hindi cinema has undergone a sea change compared to an era gone by. The digital age has rendered more substance to the female characters with even the female protagonists having grey shades but there was a time when Bollywood had stereotypical portrayal of women.
And, there have been actresses, who mastered the craft of portraying characters such as that of mother-in-laws, vamps and gangster moll with absolute finesse, so much that these actresses became synonymous with those parts.
Here are some of the actresses who have essayed the roles of mother-in-laws, vamps and gangster moll under the umbrella of negative characters, with aplomb.
The Evil Mother-in-law:
Lalita Pawar: The Og! Lalita Pawar’s portrayal of a cruel mother-in-law can not be matched upto till date even by the finest of actresses. If you remember words like ‘Kulta’, ‘Kamini’, ‘Kalmuhi’ and ‘Karamjali...

Jalsa (Amazon Prime Video)
Starring Vidya Balan, Shefali Shah, Vidhatri Bandi
Directed by Suresh Triveni
When you have two powerhouse actresses piloting a plot that leans toward a treatise on class-difference in a language that we’ve seen in Bong Joon-Ho’s overrated Parasite, you know you are in for something out of the ordinary.
Jalsa is a special film. It is more layered, provocative and evocative then the outer skin of the product would suggest. There is much going on beneath the surface than outwardly visibly. And how intellectually equipped are the two female heroes Shefali Shah and Vidya Balan to address the rush-hour traffic that the plot’s emotional velocity thrusts on them!
Balan and Shah are the kind of actors who always let us know the storms that hide their characters’ calm. I see Balan’s Maya Menon as much more messed up than she wants the world to see.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Govind Nihalani's Party (1984) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema.“Oh, Mrs. Dalloway. Always giving parties to cover the silence.” —Michael Cunningham, The HoursVirginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway begins with the line, “Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.” In Govind Nihalani’s Party (1984), Mrs. Damayanti Rane (Vijaya Mehta) does not buy the flowers herself; she is a minister’s daughter living in a mansion in Mumbai, so she asks her servants to do it instead. She does, however, lay them out in vases. Like Woolf’s Mrs. Clarissa Dalloway, Mrs. Rane is throwing a party to celebrate a friend, in this case, Diwakar Barwe (Manohar Singh), a playwright who has just won a national award for his work. Even before the party begins, she has had a sedative, a shot of...

Directed by Ram Gopal Varma
It is easy to see the third instalment of Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar franchise as an unnecessary carryover of a saga that has lost its relevance and sheen. But Sarkar 3 rises far above the wasteland of a stagnant crime-drama to give us an insight into a life of outlawry that is richly layered with blood and drama.
Bal Thackeray is dead. Long live Bal Thackeray. In Amitabh Bachchan’s persona – steely, gritty, imperturbable, granite-hard and yet malleable and vulnerable – the Thackeray doppelganger is uncanny. The walk, the talk and the ability to walk that talk to places where the dialogue writer would never have imagined…Take a bow, Mr B. They don’t make ‘em like you anymore.
It takes courage to build one more plot around that formidable and imposing figure...

I had an absolutely amazing conversation with Amit about his role in the epic drama Sarkar 3. It was even more special because he opened up about his thoughts and dreams about acting. Check out what he had to say!

Mahesh Bhatt recently stated that he was very impressed with Hansal Mehta's vision when he directed Citylights. And now, they have announced yet another association with the filmmaker as they will be recreating the classic Saaransh. Hansal Mehta has been roped in to remake the Anupam Kher - Rohini Hatangadi starrer and an excited Pooja Bhatt also revealed that she too will be co-producing the film. While we hear that Rajkummar Rao is the lead contender for Anupam Kher's role, Pooja Bhatt maintained that she wants a young actor to play the role since she believes they will do justice just like Anupam Kher did when he played the role of an aged father at the age of 28. Saaransh is the story of an elderly couple who are recouping from the death of their young son during a robbery in New York.

After gaining a strong critical acclaim for his films like Daddy and Saaransh, Mahesh Bhatt plans to revive the memories of these cult films as he has decided to adapt these movies into plays.
It was Pooja Bhatt's first step into Bollywood in the year 1991 when she played the innocent young girl in her father's film Daddy. And portraying the role of a father who lost his young son was Anupam Kher whose tragic life touched the hearts of many with Saaransh (1984). Bhatt maintained that these two stories have an emotional connect with him and are one of the most powerful stories that can be adapted to the theatre.
While Daddy also starred Anupam Kher, the cast of Saaransh included Rohini Hattangadi and Soni Razdan.

It is probably only in India that we pay good money to get our sane minds assaulted by films such as "Gabbar Singh", "Mirchi" and now, "Ramayya Vasthavayya" (Rv). When was the last time that a director made or even attempted a meaningful film featuring a top star without having to worry about pleasing certain sections of the audience? Never!
Our directors seem to be labouring under the assumption that a star film won't work if it doesn't cater to the masses. But the truth is that we haven't even tried.

Bejoy Nambiar’s second feature film after Shaitaan interconnects the lives of three characters named David, played with outstanding conviction by actors belonging to three different generations. Each story is told with a muted flourish that eschews the flamboyant edginess of a recent, highly favoured and over-flavoured genre of Hindi cinema…you know the Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj genre where the characters are darkly drawn from life’s most somber colours.

Rohini who plays a Hindu hardliner in the film believes that Catholics covert Hindu followers into Christianity. While in real life Uma Bharti, a Bjp politician also had a similar point of view. In fact the makers have even incorporated a very high profile case of an Orissa priest being burnt alive into the story line.
