The Conners is preparing for the imminent arrival of another classic Roseanne character.
Ahead of the premiere of The Conners Season 5, EPs David Caplan and Bill Helford told TV Line that fans should expect a sudden appearance from someone from the past.
“I can’t reveal it, but there is someone coming from years’ past,” Helford told the outlet.
“It was a very memorable appearance when this person was there, and this person is coming back.”
We're well into The Conners Season 5 now, and TV Line caught back up with Helford to get an update on the situation.
“Oh yeah, still happening,” Helford told TV Line this week.
“I don’t want to tell you much… It could very well be after the first of the new year.”
Sounds promising, right?
Helford went on to say the returning character is a male.

Adam Copeland (WWE Hall of Famer), Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Flash), and Susan Cryer (Silicon Valley) have all joined the cast, according to Variety.

Exclusive: The current fifth season of ABC’s The Conners will be the largest yet for the Roseanne spinoff. It will include 22 episodes, traditionally considered a full-season broadcast order.
The series’ first season, which rose out of the ashes of Roseanne’s implosion, consisted of 11 episodes. With cast members being signed year-to-year and juggling other commitments, The Conners produced 20 episodes each in Seasons 2-4. That count has now gone up to 22 episodes. I hear the news was shared during the Oct. 7 taping of the multi-camera comedy.
ABC has been stocking up on its most popular comedy series. This past summer, the network expanded the current sophomore season of breakout Abbott Elementary to a full-season 22 episodes. And The Goldbergs’ ninth season last season also was padded with additional episodes to reach the 22-episode mark.

At the 2016 Emmys, Laurie Metcalf earned three acting nominations, proving her versatility and her popularity in the industry. The actress, a three-time winner for “Roseanne,” collected bids for “Getting On,” her only time nominated as a lead, and for her guest spots on “The Big Bang Theory” and “Horace and Pete.” Two years later, she earned her first career Oscar nomination, for her supporting role in “Lady Bird” (2017). Now at the upcoming 2022 Emmys, Metcalf has a chance of repeating her Emmy triple play with nominations for three other shows — “The Conners,” “The Dropout” and “Hacks.”

ABC has ordered four additional episodes of new fall series A Million Little Things, bringing its freshman season to 17 episodes; and one more episode of new Roseanne spinoff series, The Conners, bringing its run to 11 episodes.
This is considered a full-season order for A Million Little Things as heavily serialized broadcast dramas typically produce 13-18-episode seasons. NBC’s Manifest, the highest rated and most watched new series this fall, recently received a back order of three episodes for a 16-episode freshman season, also referred to as a full-season order.
Like its predecessor, Roseanne, The Conners was intended for a short run because of its cast members’ other commitments. Roseanne had been renewed for a 13-episode second season. The Conners was originally picked up for 10 episodes in the wake of Roseanne’s abrupt cancellation.

With the calendar moving ever more closely to Oct. 16, the time has come for the cast members of The Conners to finally start sharing their true feelings about the new show. Not to mention the challenges of taking what could have been the end of the road after ABC cancelled Roseanne following a racist tweet from Roseanne Barr, and somehow pushing forward without her. In an interview with People, Sara Gilbert (who plays Darlene Conner and serves as executive producer on the show), explains, "Any sadness that we feel over what we've lost, we're hopefully channeling into an honest way into the show. And our show has always been able to deal with heavy topics, particularly for a sitcom. It's been kind of built into the mix." Which has been made obvious in the first trailer for the show featuring new footage that was recently released. (Photo Credit: ABC) Laurie Metcalf...

After 19 long years “Roseanne” returned to the small screen this past spring for its 10th season on ABC. But then it was abruptly cancelled after racist tweets by Roseanne Barr. Nevertheless, Barr’s co-star Laurie Metcalf, who reprised her role as Roseanne’s sister Jackie Harris, still earned an Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. This is her 5th bid for her work on this show and her 11th Emmy nom overall. Out of her four previous nominations for this show (1992-1995), she took home the Emmy three consecutive times (1992-1994), but those are her only three wins to date.
She submitted the episode “No Country for Old Women” to Emmy judges for consideration. In this installment, Jackie and Roseanne argue over who is going to care for their mother, Beverly (Estelle Parsons), who has just been kicked out of her nursing home. Jackie reluctantly takes her in, but...

It's been a difficult few months for the stars of the Roseanne reboot. The show was abruptly canceled by ABC after star Roseanne Barr's racist tweet, but soon after, the network announced a spin-off called The Conners starring Sara Gilbert, who played Darlene Conner on the original show from 1988 until 1997 as well as the 2018 revival. And now, Emma Kenney (who is set to play Darlene's daughter Harris Conner-Healy on the series) opened up about what it's been like filming the revival without Roseanne present — and apparently it hasn't been that hard. "I think that all of us are very professional,” the actress explained to Us Weekly in a new interview. "And there’s just so many more stories that need to be told through the Conner family and so many other different aspects of life that we’re going to get to tell, and I’m really excited and grateful for that.

When Roseanne returned to ABC last season, it was a sensation right from out of the gate, giving every indication that we would get several more years of the show at the very least. Then, of course, Roseanne Barr posted a tweet deemed racist and the network immediately cancelled the series. That, it seemed, was that. But then the rumblings began that there would be a spin-off without Roseanne, and that show — The Conners — has just gone into production. Hours later, we got our first teaser! The 15-second clip is definitely meant to build excitement for the show. It simply shows the Conners' living room and iconic ugly couch, and as it zooms in to the tune of "Anticipation" by Carly Simon, the words "What's next?" appear on screen, followed by "The Conners" and "premieres Tuesday Oct. 16, 8/7c." Just hours earlier, we got our first cast photo from the set.

ABC just released our first look at “The Conners,” which will continue the story from “Roseanne” without its title character. The rest of the cast came together for the first table read. Leading the show will be patriarch Dan Conner, played by John Goodman. As you can see in the photo above, he is surrounded by the three Conner children and three grandchildren. Also on hand is Laurie Metcalf as sister-in-law Jackie Harris.
Metcalf is currently in contention at the upcoming Emmys for her scene-stealing turn. But with five days left in voting came the news that the show would return, and that was just the boost that Metcalf needed to revive her Emmy chances.

The Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy field features two contenders, Megan Mullally and Laurie Metcalf, with very similar profiles: Both are multiple Emmy champs and fan-favorite scene-stealers who are back in the Emmy game as the only regular acting nominees of their respective revivals. But who has the better chance of winning?
Mullally bagged her eighth nomination — the second most ever in the category — for reprising her role as Karen Walker on NBC’s “Will & Grace” revival. The show, which has been renewed for two more seasons, had a disappointing Emmy nomination performance, netting just five nominations, with Mullally the only one of the core four stars to be shortlisted (Molly Shannon also received a guest nomination).

Nobody really expected the self-destructing Roseanne star herself to receive any Emmy nomination treats today after her racist rants and the ABC’s subsequent cancellation of the revival. However, TV Academy voters who snubbed Roseanne Barr went for rewarding an old favorite and a newcomer for the blue-collar comedy on Thursday with recognition for Laurie Metcalf and Editing.

As the number of series in contention for Emmy Awards continues to grow year over year (487 and counting in scripted alone), the voting members of the Television Academy have a tougher time narrowing the list down to the handful that will fit on the ballot. Of course, this leads to many worthy choices being shut out — but with some extra space available this year with staples such as “Veep” and “Better Call Saul” not making the cutoff of eligibility, a few fun surprises snuck in.
Here, Variety breaks down the snubs and surprises of the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.

ABC's Roseanne, which was famously canceled by the network earlier this year following a racist tweet from series star Roseanne Barr, earned a pair of Emmy nominations on Thursday morning, including one for Laurie Metcalf in the supporting actress in a comedy series category.
Metcalf previously won three consecutive Emmys for her role as Jackie Harris when Roseanne aired during the mid-'90s. She will next reprise the role in Roseanne spinoff The Connors (a working title), which is set to debut in the fall.

On Thursday, the Roseanne spinoff, tentatively titled The Conners, was picked up at ABC. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will star John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and Laurie Metcalf as Dan Conner, Darlene Conner, and Jackie Harris, respectively, and air this Fall with 10 new episodes. The spinoff will take over Roseanne's former Tuesdays at 8 p.m. time slot, which was pulled from the Disney-owned network after Roseanne Barr's racist tweets in May.

After the stunning cancellation of “Roseanne” on May 29 in the wake of Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets, we had written off the rest of the cast as Emmy contenders. But with five days left in voting comes news that the show will return, sans Barr, as “The Conners.” This could be just the boost that the likes of John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert need to revive their Emmy chances.
We’ve already seen the Broadway community rally around Metcalf, who pulled off a stunning upset at the recent Tony Awards. She won the featured actress trophy for her work in “Three Tall Women” over Denise Gough, who was riveting in the epic revival of “Angels in America.” Metcalf is equally beloved by the TV academy, racking up three consecutive wins for her role as the tart-tongued Jackie Harris during the original run of “Roseanne” beginning in 1992. Despite a career dating back to the earliest days of television, Estelle Parsons has never contended for an Emmy Award. At age 90, the Oscar-winning actress is about to break that dry spell as she is a frontrunner to win Best Comedy Guest Actress for her turn as Beverly Harris, the irresistibly insufferable mother of Roseanne Connor (Roseanne Barr) and Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) on “Roseanne.”
She recurred in this role throughout the nine seasons of the show’s original run but was overlooked by TV academy voters. The ratings for the revival of “Roseanne” have been red-hot and Parsons was showcased in two of the best-reviewed episodes. In “Darlene v. David,” Beverly arrives at the Connors’ front door, admitting she has just been kicked out of her nursing home for having too many sexual flings with fellow residents. Updated 11:15 Am: Whitney Cummings will not be back as executive producer/co-showrunner of Roseanne for the show’s 13-episode eleventh season, with executive producer/co-showrunner Bruce Helford taking the reigns as the sole showrunner.
“Whitney just had too much on her plate to commit,” Helford told Deadline. “But she’s always a part of the Roseanne family.”
Cummings later confirmed the news on Twitter. “Working on Roseanne was a surreal, incredible experience,” she wrote. “Due to work commitments and my tour schedule, I’m gonna have to watch the Connors from the sidelines next season. It was an honor to work with such an incredible group of actors, writers and crew. Harry Levin, you can stop calling my cell phone now.”

It’s a good week for a whole slew of Broadway talent who were just announced as Tony Award nominees for the 2018 ceremony. Many of those nominated include actors and writers who have earned major Emmy love in the past, and could do so again in just a few months. Doing so would put them in a rare category of artists who have earned Tony and Emmy nominations in the same year, with one in particular also having an Oscar nomination under her belt.
See 2018 Tony Awards nominations: Full list in all 26 categories
Here are some actors and writers from this year’s class of Tony nominees who might continue their awards streak with Emmy nominations in July:
Laurie Metcalf – Not only did Metcalf add another Tony nomination to her total of five for her performance in “Three Tall Women,” but she also earned her first Oscar nomination earlier this year for “Lady Bird.

ABC's beloved sitcom Roseanne has already scored record-breaking ratings (more than 25 million viewers its first week!) in its triumphant return to television 30 years after its original run. And much of Roseanne's original cast — including Rosanne Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and Laurie Metcalf — has returned to the show for the Season 10. "You're always nervous before you do something, and we're so grateful to the fans. I mean it's just unbelievable," Sara —who was 13 years old when the original Roseanne premiered and 22 when it ended — recently said on an episode of The Talk. "I could cry now just thinking about it. It's been so many years. You know, it's my childhood... it's just amazing to watch," she said of the show's high ratings, which have already paved the way for Season 11. It was renewed for another season on March 30, just a few days after its season premiere. With plenty more Roseanne episodes on the horizon,...

Remember when actress Lecy Goranson (aka the original Becky!) randomly left Roseanne? When the hit ABC sitcom premiered back in 1988, Lecy — who was then just 14 years old — perfectly portrayed the spunky eldest Conner daughter, Becky. But after five seasons on the series, Lecy surprisingly exited the show and left fans totally perplexed as to why. Scroll down for all the details on Lecy's departure! Why did the original Becky leave Roseanne? In 1992, Lecy decided to leave Roseanne to pursue a college education at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. At the time, the young actress' school schedule permitted her to still occasionally appear on the series. During Season 5, Lecy's character, Becky, surprisingly eloped with her boyfriend, Mark Healy (played by the late Glenn Quinn), and subsequently left her Illinois hometown. Since Becky then lived out-of-state, Lecy was often shown speaking to her parents, Roseanne Conner (played by Roseanne Barr) and Dan Conner...

Following the massive ratings for the premiere of the Roseanne revival on ABC, the network has renewed the series for next season, which will be the classic sitcom’s 11th overall. Sources say the order is for 13 episodes, up from 9 in the current first installment of the revival. You can watch a video of the renewal announcement below the post.

Here’s the no-brainer of the week: ABC has finalized a renewal of its “Roseanne” revival for a second go-round — which, the network notes, will actually be its 11th season. ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey, who told IndieWire earlier in the week that such a move was likely forthcoming, announced the pickup on Friday.
“Roseanne” opened to huge numbers, which continue to grow. After just one day of Nielsen’s delayed viewing counted, Tuesday’s “Roseanne” premiere has now jumped to 21.9 million viewers, and its adults 18-49 rating is now at a 6.2. (It was a 5.2 rating after its live debut.) That number will continue to grow once Live+3 and Live+7 data come in.
ABC had already sealed deals with the show’s stars to return for another season — this time, for 13 episodes. And Roseanne Barr has previously expressed her desire to keep the show going in success.

President Donald Trump was one of the first people to learn about the impressive ratings of ABC’s “Roseanne” reboot, thanks to a phone call from an old friend. “I got a call from Mark Burnett — he did ‘The Apprentice,’ he’s a great guy,” Trump told supporters at an infrastructure speech in Cleveland, Ohio, just one day after Roseanne Barr‘s working class sitcom made its triumphant return. Trump continued, “[Mark] said, ‘Donald, I called just to say hello and to tell you, did you see ‘Roseanne’s’ ratings?’ I said, ‘Mark, how big were they?’ ‘They were unbelievable. Over 18 million people.’ And it was about us! The fake news hasn’t quite figured it out yet. But they will. And when they do, they’ll become much less fake.”

Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live“) has won two Emmys in a row for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, and she’s looking to keep that streak alive this year. But if anyone can overtake her it’s two women who have ruled the category in decades past. According to the Expert journalists who have chimed in with their gutsy early predictions thus far, McKinnon’s biggest threats are Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne“) and Megan Mullally (“Will and Grace“).
Five out of eight Experts are betting on McKinnon to three-peat for her variety of characters in the late-night sketch comedy series: Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ben Travers (IndieWire) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo). “SNL” has been a strong awards force in recent years, and in 2017 it had its biggest year ever with 22 nominations and 9 victories including Best Variety Sketch Series and McKinnon’s second straight Comedy Supporting Actress prize.

The revival of “Roseanne” debuted to the second-best ratings of any scripted TV episode all year — and it looks like President Donald Trump took notice.
According to the New York Times, President Trump called Roseanne Barr, the creator and star of “Roseanne” and an avid supporter of the President, to congratulate her on the revival’s success.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed the call. The New York Times cited a source who said Trump was “enthralled” with “Roseanne’s” “huge” ratings, and the President also thanked Barr for her support. The show earned 18.2 million viewers, second only to the post-Super Bowl episode of “This Is Us,” which earned 26.97 million viewers.
The revival of “Roseanne” features many of the original’s characters, including Barr, Sara Gilbert, and John Goodman. Roseanne is a Trump supporter in the show, with her TV sister Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) written as a Hillary supporter.

It was the cackle heard ’round the TV business Wednesday morning: The triumphant return of “Roseanne” stunned executives, including top brass at ABC. Insiders at rival networks predicted a rating as high as 3.0 among adults 18-49, which would have been deemed a huge success. The hour-long return blew up those projections, coming in at a stunning 5.2 rating.
Approximately 18.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the Conner family reconnect, 21 years after the show’s finale. A lot has changed since then — including in the TV biz, where a 5.2 rating for a series episode is a rare commodity (well, outside a few outliers like “The Walking Dead”). The show was the highest adult 18-49 rating for any comedy telecast since the 2014 season opener of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory.”

NBC last summer renewed its Will & Grace revival for a second season ahead of its fall premiere. ABC similarly had been laying the groundwork for a second season of its Roseanne revival in the weeks leading to its March 27 debut. I hear the network has closed deals with the cast of the politically charged blue-collar sitcom. They all are set to return for Season 2, which I hear is expected to be 10-13 episodes, up from nine for the first installment. (The network has been trying to expand the size of the order even further)
I hear the Carsey-Werner Television-produced Roseanne has an early-renewal deadline — which is not uncommon for high-profile series — and ABC has until April 15 to pick up a second season. After the blockbuster ratings for the premiere last night, the network likely won’t wait that long. ABC had no comment.

The Roseanne cast is back together again for the 2018 reboot— and we couldn't be more excited. Back in November, Roseanne Barr cleared up many fan suspicions and revealed that Johnny Galecki is returning to the show for the revival. And now that the series finally airs tonight, we can't wait to see Johnny in his former role again. "We have got our Johnny Galecki back on Roseanne this episode — what a joy to work with such a deeply empathetic actor," she wrote at the time. "Very moving 4 all of us. #Joy." Johnny will seemingly come back as Darlene's husband, David Healy. And he's not the only one coming back! Roseanne, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and more previously reunited at the first table read. The fun event occurred just one day before the 29th anniversary of the show, which originally ran for nine seasons from 1988 until 1997. In several photos shared by ABC,...

2017 marked 20 years since the series finale of the now-classic sitcom Roseanne, so fans of the Roseanne Barr and John Goodman-led show still have many questions about the bizarre final season. Viewers will recall an undoubtedly strange ninth season that saw the Conner family winning the lottery, Dan Conner miraculously coming back to life despite suffering a fatal heart attack at the end of Season 8, the switching of romantic partners, and the introduction of gay characters. After the Conners — your average, run-of-the-mill, blue-collar family struggling to make end's meet and stay afloat — were first introduced, Roseanne's hilarious fictional version of her life was ranked the most popular show on TV (yes, it beat out The Cosby show, by over 200,000 viewers). With the highly-anticipated reboot airing tonight, many fans are looking for a reminder of how Roseanne ended and where the characters were when we last saw them. Scroll down to find out!

Roseanne is back for season 10 after a 21-year-hiatus, and fans are curious what has become of the sharp-tongued matriarch of the Conner family and her tight-knit brood. In the season 9 season/series finale, viewers learned that much of what we knew about the Conners after nine years wasn't true: the family winning the lottery was pure fiction, written by Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) following the death of her husband, Dan (John Goodman). Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf), Roseanne's sister, was gay, high-school sweethearts Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and David (Johnny Galecki) who married and had a daughter together were never a couple. David was actually with Becky (Lecy Goranson), the oldest Conner daughter, and Becky's dim-witted husband, Mark (played by Glenn Quinn who died in 2002), was involved with Darlene.

The Roseanne gang is back! ABC just released the opening credits video for the show's highly-anticipated upcoming reboot and the clip is giving us major nostalgia. Not only is the series' original theme song back, but former Roseanne stars Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman have all returned too, making this a TV remake we seriously cannot wait to watch. Just like the show's very first credits video, the reboot's opening begins with a shot of lead character Roseanne Conner (played by Roseanne Barr, of course) sitting at the Conner family's kitchen table. Seated beside Roseanne is her husband, Dan Conner (John), and sister Jackie Harris (Laurie) while the three Connor kids, Becky (Lecy), Darlene (Sara), and DJ (Michael) buzz around the kitchen. Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), but could both walk away winners at the Emmys. Janney will be contending in Best Comedy Actress for “Mom,” while that loss could fuel Metcalf to an Emmy win for the “Roseanne” revival.
Metcalf enjoyed some of the best reviews of her career for her affecting, complex turn in “Lady Bird” and thoroughly dominated the critics awards the first half of the season. It was so beloved that many were still hoping for and predicting an Oscar upset until the very end despite Janney’s steamrolling precursor run. If any Emmy voter still feels like she was robbed, this could sort of double as a consolation prize.

Riving old TV series has become big business in Hollywood and it seems like one of the most anticipated revivals coming is Roseanne. I was never really into this show when I was growing up, but I know a lot of people loved the sitcom, including my parents who watched it all the time. Those people are sure to enjoy this revival.
The full cast of the original series is coming back, including John Goodman, who originally died at the end of the series. But, as you'll see in the trailer, they play it off like he never really died. I guess if the comic books can get away with cheating death all the time, Roseanne can do it too.
Featuring the complete original cast, new series regulars and notable returning guest stars, the revival will explore life, death and everything in between through the relatable, hilarious and brutally honest lens of the Conner household.

Laurie Metcalf may not take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Lady Bird,” but she could still grab some hardware later this year. With the “Roseanne” revival set to premiere next month, she’ll be in the running to pick up her fourth Emmy as Jackie Harris.
Metcalf was an Emmy favorite during the ABC comedy’s original run, three-peating in Best Comedy Supporting Actress from 1992 through ’94. A fourth victory for Metcalf would tie the category record with Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”) and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”). Coincidentally, Perlman and Roberts each won three consecutive trophies before garnering a fourth later on.
