Exclusive: Former CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl and Cannonball Productions principals Sean Hanish and Paul Jaconi-Biery have completed principal photography on a documentary series about the famed 1982 Milwaukee Brewers.
Just a Bit Outside: The Story of the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers chronicles the ups-and-downs of an almost championship season. The story is about the love affair between a down-on-its-luck blue collar city, and a perfectly matched blue-collar team — one that continues to this day, 40 years later.
The ’82 Brewers, known affectionately as “Harvey’s Wallbangers,” made it all the way to Game 7 of the World Series, only to lose. But then, in their lowest moment, the city threw the Brewers a parade that rivaled any celebration thrown for a team winning the World Series.

‘Tenet.’
Exhibitors are anticipating a blockbuster opening this Thursday, even with caps on seating capacity, for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet after a sizable turnout for paid previews last weekend.
Warner Bros’ international spy thriller starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh played on more than 500 screens.
The distributor imposed a worldwide block on figures for the previews, which will be folded into the opening weekends in about 70 markets, but exhibitors’ feedback was highly positive.
Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace Gm Alex Temesvari tells If: “We were extremely happy with the weekend business, which met my high expectations. The Orpheum had its best trading weekend since reopening by a wide margin.”
The audience at his venue, which is operating at about 30 per cent capacity, spanned a wide demographic, from teenagers to seniors.

Not all heroes wear capes, and in Sean Hanish’s “Saint Judy,” not all heroes can afford those capes.
Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan) is a determined and devoted immigration lawyer for her clients. Unfortunately, she’s better at arguing cases than she is at paying bills or spending time with her son, Alex. While she’s a soft-hearted advocate, Judy’s tough when it comes to the courtroom. Monaghan embodies Judy’s attributes into her performance, whether it’s her character’s zealous sense of duty, her persistence in keeping her relationship with her son, or her frazzled exhaustion at the end of the day when there are still so many people still left to help.
In some ways, Judy’s personality sounds so familiar because she shares many qualities with other well-meaning and determined lawyers in movies. Think Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a man who believed...

The traditional biopic is slowly becoming a relic of the cinematic past. By and large, films made about real life public figures tend to try and find a new angle in depicting someone’s life. That way, it can never feel recycled or stale. However, some movies are still taking the tried and true path. Occasionally, it still works, but most of the time, it ends up feeling a bit empty. Such is the case with Saint Judy, a well intentioned and undeniably timely biopic that never fully realizes its potential. The story being told is important, for sure. Unfortunately, its depiction leaves something to be desired. The film is a look at attorney Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan), who would single-handedly changed the asylum laws in the United States, all in an effort to help save women’s lives. A public defender, Judy accepts a job out west in California...

“I’m not that noble,” claims Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan) toward the conclusion of “Saint Judy,” but by that point, Sean Hanish’s tale has long since dissuaded everyone — both in the film, and watching it — of that notion. More problematic than Wood’s holy virtue, however, is the one-note preachiness of this based-on-real-events drama, which details the lawyer’s fight to secure a Muslim woman’s asylum, which in turn changed U.S. policy. It’s a case of good intentions and subpar storytelling, the latter of which will likely hamper its limited theatrical fortunes.
With immigration and women’s rights at the forefront of today’s news, “Saint Judy” arrives at an auspicious time, and to be sure, Wood’s achievement deserves to be celebrated. The issue is that Hanish’s film never misses an opportunity to make its saga as corny as possible, beginning with an introduction...

"We have a compelling basis for appeal, we just need a rock solid brief for the Ninth Circuit." Blue Fox Entertainment has debuted the first official trailer for Saint Judy, a drama which first premiered at both the Los Angeles Film Festival and Raindance Film Festival last year. The film tells the story of immigration attorney Judy Wood, and how she single-handedly changed America's Law of Asylum to save women's lives. This case has gone on to save the lives of thousands of other persecuted women around the world. Michelle Monaghan stars as Judy, and the film has drawn comparisons to Erin Brockovich. The cast includes Leem Lubany, Common, Alfred Molina, Alfred Woodard, Peter Krause, Waleed Zuaiter, Gabriel Bateman, Ben Schnetzer, and Mykelti Williamson. This looks like a powerful, inspiring, honest story. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sean Hanish's Saint Judy, direct from YouTube: Saint Judy...

The first trailer has been released for Saint Judy which was picked up by Blue Fox Entertainment last September. The movie, which stars Michelle Monaghan, Leem Lubany, Common, Alfred Molina and Alfre Woodard, tells the story of Los Angeles-based immigration attorney Judy Wood who argued what became a landmark case in changing the laws of asylum for women into the U.S.
The biopic is from writer/director Sean Hanish and filmmakers Paul Jaconi-Biery and Kelly Kahl. Peter Krause, Ben Schnetzer, Gabriel Bateman, Waleed Zuaiter, and Mykelti Williamson also star in this film.
Wood was a single mother in her mid-30s who moved to Los Angeles and committed herself to immigration law, particularly asylum cases. A deeply spiritual woman, she actually started practicing immigration law after a vision she had of helping others who were suffering and in need.

Another year, another Los Angeles Film Festival — only this time it’s different. Well, sort of: Laff made waves when it announced that it was moving from its usual time slot of June to late September, ostensibly to throw its hat in the ever-crowded fall-festival ring; the lineup looks much the same as previous editions, however, and so the change appears to have been largely cosmetic.
Whatever the case, this year’s program features a number of under-the-radar offerings with breakout status, especially when you take a closer look at who’s involved in them. Here’s what to get excited for.
“The Chaperone” (Premieres)
Look, we all miss “Downton Abbey.” The movie adaptation of that beloved comfort-food series is still a year away, so take, well, comfort in the fact that we can at least hold ourselves over with “The Chaperone” for now. Series creator Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay,...

Blue Fox Entertainment has secured worldwide rights to Saint Judy, a biopic centered on immigration attorney Judy Wood starring Mission Impossible: Fallout star Michelle Monaghan. Blue Fox will launch international sales at the Toronto Film Festival and will release the film domestically early next year.
Directed by Sean Hanish, the pic also stars Leem Lubany, Common, Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Peter Krause, Gabriel Bateman, Ben Schnetzer, Mykelti Williamson, Waleed Zuaiter, Kevin Chapman, and Aimee Garcia.
The pic follows Judy, a single mother in her mid-30’s, who single-handedly changed the U.S. law of asylum. In a landmark case, Ms. Wood represented an Afghan woman who fled her home country after being persecuted by the Taliban for opening a school for girls. Against all odds, Ms. Wood fought a tenacious battle both in and out of court, which culminated in arguments before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

The La Film Festival has placed a heavy emphasis on diversity in its competition film slate, with 42% of the films directed by women and 39% helmed by people of color.
The 24th edition of the festival is also positioning itself as an event for unveiling lesser-known talent. It will take place Sept. 20-28 as it moves from its traditional June slot to the fall awards season.
The Los Angeles event follow the Venice International Film Festival, which begins in late August; the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over Labor Day; and the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, which starts on Sept. 6. The festival will end just as the New York Film Festival begins.
“Our mission of finding fresh new voices from different geographical and cultural axes remains true,” said L Film Festival director Jennifer Cochis. “These storytellers are united by their ability to transport, impact and inspire audiences with the power of their craft.

Forty feature films including 24 world premieres highlight the official La Film Festival competition lineup in the fest’s move into the crowded fall festival corridor, away from their previous early-summer perch.
Among the movies in competition is the highly regarded Swedish film Border (Grans) from director Ali Abbasi, a Neon pickup out of Cannes that took the top prize in that festival’s No. 2 competition, Un Certain Regard. It is listed as a “California Premiere,” which means it likely will show up first in Telluride, Toronto or both before Laff, which runs September 20-28. It will play in the World Fiction Competition across a field of categories that also include U.S. Fiction, Documentary, La Muse, Nightfall. Short Films, and Episodes: Indie Series from the web.

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

The Lifetime movie “Return to Zero” is a wrenching drama about a couple coping with the death of their unborn child, and a film that landed Minnie Driver her second Emmy nomination as a mother struggling with devastating loss. The drama from writer-director Sean Hanish turned to Kickstarter to raise enough money to complete its post-production, and received contributions from more than 700 families of stillborn children. What was the toughest thing you had to do in the movie? The toughest thing I had to do in the movie was to go to an extreme, emotional place I had never been.

Sean Hanish was inspired by his own misfortune to write and direct the emotionally harrowing "Return to Zero," the Lifetime film starring Oscar and Emmy nominee Minnie Driver and Paul Adelstein ("Private Practice) as a couple dealing with the devastating death of their child. As he admitted during our recent webcam chat (watch below), “What my wife and I went through nearly nine years ago was incredibly personal. One of the most personal stories you could put on screen, losing your child, especially in this way.” -Break- Join the heated Emmy discussions going on right now in the Gold Derby message boards Why did he want to share such a deeply personal story? “I’ve always looked, and I think a lot of people have looked, to film, entertainment and to art, for healing. Minnie Driver has had quite the career, and she's done so rather quietly. She's racked up nominations for an Emmy ("The Riches"), Golden Globe ("The Riches"), a SAG Award ("Good Will Hunting") and an Oscar ("Good Will Hunting"). Now she's in the awards race again with NBC's "About a Boy" and a new drama airing on Lifetime this Saturday. Driver has better odds for her turn as Maggie Royal in Lifetime's event film "Return to Zero." Based on director Sean Hanish's personal experience with losing a child, the heart-wrenching film marks the network's first global premiere this Saturday, May 17th. Driver took a few minutes to talk to Indiewire about the difficulties involved with making the feature, her love of "About a Boy," and why an Emmy would matter not only to her, but everyone who supported the film. "Return to Zero" was partially funded through Kickstarter. How did that come about?...

Television commercial director Sean Hanish had good reason to believe he was living the dream in July 2005. His career was on the rise as he had written, directed, and produced an ad campaign for supermodel Cindy Crawford's home furnishing line. "The next time I see you you're going to be a daddy," Crawford told him after he presented the spots to her at her home.
"I felt pretty on top of the world that day," Hanish recalls. "And as I'm coming out of Cindy Crawford's driveway, my wife calls me." She gave him the devastating news that ...
