Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series is getting a Steelbook upgrade, at least when it comes to David Cronenberg‘s controversial feature debut, Shivers.
Shivers becomes available on Steelbook® on March 5, 2024, exclusively at Walmart.
In Shivers, “The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.” The cast includes Paul Hampton, Lynn Lowry, and Barbara Steele.
Cronenberg blends sex and violence in a nightmarish parasitic outbreak in a high-rise apartment complex. Scientifically engineered parasites meant to replace functioning human organs instead renders their hosts sexually violent, hellbent on spreading their infection to others. How the pulsing worm-like parasites infect provides a lot of gnarly body horror moments, including a nightmare bathtub scene.
Check out the Steelbook artwork and full list of features included in the release below.

The widespread Covid-19 pandemic which took hold at the end of 2019 has made its way around the globe and looks like the sort of thing one would expect to see in either a David Cronenberg or George A. Romero film. Mr. Cronenberg has made a career out of making films which essentially depict human beings experiencing their bodies revolting against themselves while the late Mr. Romero directed a series of zombie films wherein droves of flesh-eating, reanimated corpses, presumably brought back to life by radiation emitted from a space probe returning from Venus that blew up in Earth’s atmosphere, wreak havoc among the living. Both directors present simultaneously dark and comedic visions of humanity, and we all now find ourselves in a precarious scenario that one would equate to the nightmares conjured up by these filmmakers since the quarantine...

When it comes to horror we all tend to have our favourite type, some will say slashers while others may say they enjoy good old Hammer. I grew up on horror and when I was younger I had a thirst for any film I could get hold of, I found the styles I loved and directors that really caught my interest. One of these directors was David Cronenberg, but one movie that never really sat right with me was Shivers, I just didn’t get it. Then I grew older and wiser and with greater understanding realised just how good the film actually is.

A cult favorite, Shivers is acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg’s feature-length debut and new title to the Vestron Collector’s Series. Kino Lorber has released the obscure 1969 Western “More Dead Than Alive” in a Blu-ray edition. Discharged from prison in 1891 after serving an eighteen-year sentence for murder, legendary gunslinger Cain (Clint Walker) determines to stay away from firearms, find honest work, and save enough money to buy a ranch. But his reputation as “Killer” Cain precedes him, and chances for employment are slim until he encounters conniving showman Dan Ruffalo (Vincent Price). “People would have something to talk about, if they could see you using this notched Colt of yours,” Ruffalo chortles. He encourages Cain to cash in on his notoriety and join Ruffalo’s traveling show as its star sharpshooting attraction, relegating the show’s current marksman, Billy (Paul Hampton), to a subsidiary role. Monica, a free-spirited artist (Anne Francis), strikes up a friendship with Cain and thinks it’s a bad idea for him to pick up a gun again,...

Alien may be a sci-fi horror classic, but what about the movies that inspired it - including David Cronenberg’s debut, Shivers?
At first, they might look as different as night and day. One is the directorial debut from a maverick Canadian director, the other is a Hollywood movie funded by 20th Century Fox. One is set in deep space, the other in a luxury apartment block on terra firma. One had a decent amount of money to throw at the construction of sets and special effects, the other was made for a few thousand dollars.
Yet Alien, released in 1979 and triggering a franchise that is still growing and mutating today, has more in common with Shivers than at first meets the eye. Cronenberg made Shivers for approximately $130,000 in 1975. Could it be that this low-budget shocker inspired what is still considered to be the ultimate space horror movie?...

‘Body Horror’ is a term synonymous with Canadian director David Cronenberg. His early work in the horror field (Rabid, The Brood, The Fly) all share connective tissue through the theme of internal horror – a transformation or catharsis from within (always for the worse) that strikes the viewer in a very personal way. Shivers (1975), aka They Came from Within, is his first feature film - a clever, creepy, and gritty introduction to the sub-genre he helped create.
Distributed by Cinepix Film Properties Inc. (Canada) and Trans American Films (Us) in October ’75 and July ’76 respectively, and produced on a budget of $179,000 (Cad), Shivers played at theaters and Drive-Ins all across North America in the summer of ’76, and up to that point was the most profitable Canadian film produced. Critics were generally kind, including Roger Ebert who thought it was well made, with genuine style and talent on display. There was a new player in the horror world,...

★★★★☆Almost forty years after its first release, Shivers (1975) is still difficult to watch. Even for a director as renowned for his bizarre visions as David Cronenberg, his first big budget production - known under several alternative titles including They Came from Within and Orgy of the Blood Parasites - this film is weird. Starring 'Queen of Horror' Barbara Steele and actor/singer Paul Hampton it is not for the squeamish, or easily offended dealing as it does with several taboo subjects. Welcome to Starliner Towers, an ultra-modern apartment block where residents can live in peace and harmony, with their every need catered for.

Here’s another installment featuring Joe Dante’s reviews from his stint as a critic for Film Bulletin circa 1969-1974. Our thanks to Video Watchdog and Tim Lucas for his editorial embellishments!
Nurses‑make‑out saga is passable fodder for drive‑ins, with mild nudity values for ogling by the soft‑core male contingent. Rating: R.
This sequel to the recent and fairly successful The Student Nurses again mixes TV soap opera plotting, youth clichés and sex, but this time out the formula fizzles. Exuding a general aura of familiarity, the dreary New World Pictures release will have to settle for lower‑berth dual billing in those situations where its forerunner paid off. Best prospects are in drive‑in slottings. The writing‑directing chores herein were entrusted to George Armitage, a Roger Corman protégé (he wrote Gas‑S‑S) making his directorial bow. Apart from one or two mild attempts at parodying the genre,...
