Jessica Biel was so invested in making The Sinner that she was ready to quit Hollywood if the anthology series didn’t sell.
Biel, who earned an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination for her season one role as Cora Tennetti and continued to executive produce the anthology series through its four seasons at USA, detailed on podcast The Bright Side how much working on the show meant to her.
The actress recalled that “doors did not open at all” for her production company, Iron Ocean, which she started with her business partner Michelle Purple 20 years ago. For the first 10 years, they experienced “almost no success at all” she said.
Though the production company was able to make the 2012 film The Tall Man, Biel said it wasn’t until “many years later” that they were introduced to The Sinner, which turned out to be Iron Ocean’s first major venture into TV.

True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

“The Sinner” is adding Frances Fisher to the cast of the fourth season.

The new season starts shooting in Nova Scotia in May. Pullman has appeared in every season as police detective Harry Ambrose.
Fisher played Jane Crawford on the award-winning HBO adaptation of “Watchmen.” She portrayed Rose’s mother in “Titanic” and is also well known for “Unforgiven.” Her TV credits include “Resurrection,” “Masters of Sex,” “The Killing,” “Torchwood” and “Eureka.”

Firefly Lane eked out a second straight win on Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming chart, but the Netflix run of USA anthology series The Sinner was close behind in third place.
The results from February 8 to 14 reflect U.S. streaming through a TV set, meaning viewing globally or on mobile devices is not counted.
Three shows were bunched at the top of the rankings (see full list below). Firefly Lane‘s 10 episodes reportedly had 1.288 billion minutes of viewing during the period, edging the four episodes of Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. The 24 episodes of The Sinner, meanwhile, racked up 1.229 billion minutes.
Disney+ series WandaVision, whose six episodes have been released weekly since a two-episode premiere in January, came in 10th with 598 million minutes of viewing. The level of viewing was fairly flat with the prior week.

Why do we love detective series so much? Perhaps our little human brains are attracted to mystery. What is our experience with the world at large if not one big mystery to uncover? Or perhaps it’s the promise of answers within that mystery that compels us so. Certainly those are big factors but one aspect of detective stories’ appeal can’t be overlooked: the detective themselves.
From a nuts and bolts storytelling perspective, there is probably no more ready-made protagonist than a good detective. A detective is like the viewer themselves – thrust into unfamiliar circumstances and then asked to use their skills of observation and deduction to figure that situation out. The appeal of a good detective story is truly elemental. And that’s why you should be watching USA Network’s The Sinner, all three seasons of which are now on Netflix.

This story about Jessica Biel first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
After she finished filming her violent and trauma-laden limited series “The Sinner,” Jessica Biel remembered with a laugh, “I looked at my partner Michelle and said, ‘We’re only doing animation from here on out.'”
She said this on a phone call from the Bahamas, soaking up the sun after shipping off her husband, Justin Timberlake, and son, Silas, in a golf cart.
But the USA Networks project that has landed Biel in the Emmy race was no day at the beach. “It was super intense and a lot of heavy lifting, but there’s a real joy in the torturous aspect of our jobs,” said Biel, who also produced the series. “At the end of the day, you’ve had a great scene and you look at your partners and it’s so satisfying.

Harry Ambrose is going to get a reputation.
It's only the second such case he's investigating, but on The Sinner Season 2 Episode 1 when he's called by someone in his hometown to take a look at a murder with no apparent motive, it doesn't take long for Harry to get sucked into the case.
Whether it was being home again or his enthusiasm for another seemingly motive-less case, Harry wasn't on his game.
There's no doubt in my mind The Sinner Season 2 will be as compelling as The Sinner Season 1, but as watchable as the first season turned out to be, it too had flaws.
There were a lot of moments that felt stuffed into the series for shock value only. At the time, The Sinner was only to be a one-time limited series. It was based on a book, though, so I figured the material came right from author Petra Hammesfahr.

The first season of USA psychological crime thriller “The Sinner” took its story, structure and tone from Petra Hammesfahr’s novel. But the second season is its own, completely original mystery.
Without a pre-existing plot to follow, Derek Simonds created a new story about why someone would commit a seemingly unprovoked murder. This time the culprit is a 13-year-old boy Julian (played by Elisha Henig), and it’s clear from the start that he is guilty. The show follows the first season’s structure of unraveling the complicated reasons behind the crime, a similarity Simonds wanted to echo intentionally.
“We felt like we hit the right sweet spot between a character-driven drama and a hopefully elevated genre piece,” Simonds tells Variety.
One of his top priorities, he says, is focusing on the psychological aspects of the investigation by Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), who is called back to his hometown...

There were a lot of reasons to doubt “The Sinner” Season 2. The source material for the first season — Petra Hammesfahr’s book of the same name — was all used up in the original, Emmy-nominated incarnation. Its star, Jessica Biel, moved on and took most of the characters driving a story about a woman who inexplicably stabbed a stranger on the beach with her. Starting over with just a genre (mystery), theme (murder with a hidden motive), and a supporting character (Bill Pullman’s detective) isn’t exactly enough to guarantee continued success.
Yet creator Derek Simonds assembled a helluva team for an intriguing follow-up season. The first three episodes of Season 2 match the tone and intensity of the writer’s gripping debut, while new cast members Tracy Letts, Natalie Paul, and Carrie Coon more than make up for any holes left by the original cast. Writers move away from original text in second seasons
By randee dawn
When Netflix’s “The Sinner” wrapped its limited series run last September, the story seemed over, having followed its source material — Petra Hammesfahr’s novel by the same name — to its end.
Then in March, “Sinner” got a second season. Now what?
“It’s liberating, and it’s also terrifying,” says “Sinner” showrunner Derek Simonds. “We don’t even have goalposts we might have to incorporate from a book. Sure, it’s been very freeing, but the possibilities can be paralyzing. There are so many more roads to explore.”
Books are common enough for small-screen adaptations, traditionally ending up as one-off movies or, at best, miniseries. But as TV storytelling has pushed past those expected boundaries, showrunners and networks have realized that there’s no reason to abandon a whole world and characters just because the book concluded.

Best known for her onscreen roles, Jessica Biel was a central figure in developing The Sinner — USA's eight-episode limited series about a quiet mother's very public murder of a young man — and stewarding the mystery drama to TV, and into a second-season renewal. She and producing partner Michelle Purple became attached to the adaptation of Petra Hammesfahr's 1999 novel when the story was just in its manuscript stage.

While reading Petra Hammesfahr’s 1999 novel “The Sinner,” Derek Simonds responded strongly to the “frank” way the story dealt with issues of sexuality, abuse and religion. Although the novel was written with a German sensibility, Simonds wanted to keep the same tone when adapting it for an American audience. He did want to expand the point of view of the characters and the narrative structure, though. His result was crafted as a suspense thriller that allowed the central character Cora (Jessica Biel) to have a hero’s journey despite being a killer, as well as to work as a two-hander with the newly fleshed out Detective Ambrose (Bill Pullman).

The novel unfolds from Cora’s point of view, which allows the reader insight into her mind. In the early pages, she is clearly “incredibly depressed” and suicidal, haunted by years-ago trauma, says Simonds.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Sinner” Season 1, including the ending.]
After “The Sinner” cast its “formidable, mysterious woman” with Carrie Coon, the USA Network series didn’t have to look far when it needed to cast an older man for its next season. The actress’ husband, Tracy Letts – the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, screenwriter, and Tony-winning actor – has joined the cast, opposite Bill Pullman, in Season 2.
Created by Derek Simonds and based on German author Petra Hammesfahr’s book of the same name, Season 1 of “The Sinner” revolved around Det. Harry Ambrose (Pullman) helping Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) uncover nearly unimaginable past traumas, which helped reduce her 30-year prison sentence for murder to second-degree manslaughter. In the second season, Ambrose travels to his hometown in rural New York to investigate the case of an 11-year-old boy who claims to have killed his parents but has no motive.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the finale of USA Network’s “The Sinner” in addition to the book on which it was based.]
USA Network’s “The Sinner” became one of the surprise hits of the summer for its fascinating look at how hidden and unresolved traumas can manifest in disturbing or downright horrifying ways. The psychologically twisted story delved deeply into the past of a woman who seemed relatively normal and happy, but whose abuse at the hands of multiple people eventually led to her murdering a man without apparent provocation.
German crime author Petra Hammesfahr penned the 1999 novel on which “The Sinner” is based, and for the most part the central mysteries remained the same in both versions. The television adaptation naturally also had the expected number of cosmetic changes: Cora Bender is now Cora Tannetti, a song played on a cassette tape now plays on a phone, and the setting has moved from Germany to a small city in New York.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers through Episode 6 of “The Sinner.”]
Although “The Sinner” is bent on discovering why Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) stabbed a stranger to death out of the blue, another storyline has captured the attention of viewers beyond that central mystery. The USA Network limited series also centers on Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman), a detective determined to get to the bottom of Cora’s case.
In the Petra Hammesfahr crime novel from which “The Sinner” is based, the detective on the case is fairly generic and not very interesting. This is a far cry from the series’ Det. Ambrose, whose private life is far more colorful than that of the typical embittered detective stereotype. In fact, his character is one of the most brilliant deviations from the novel.

Instead of the usual loosey-goosey "limited event series," USA Network has billed The Sinner TV show an "eight episode close-ended series." That makes sense, because it is based on a novel by Petra Hammesfahr. Still, if it is a hit with fans and earns big ratings, USA could always continue it, perhaps as an anthology that focuses on a different crime. 13 Reasons Why, which was originally planned as a single installment, is getting a second season on Netflix, and Big Little Lies may return to HBO, as well. Will The Sinner be renewed for season two? Stay tuned. Jessica Biel has a killer new role — literally. In USA’s “The Sinner,” an eight-episode limited series based on the international bestselling novel of the same name by German crime writer Petra Hammesfahr, the actress plays Cora Tannetti, a seemingly normal wife and mother who brutally murders a total stranger in full view of a beach full of people.
That murder forms the basis of the series’ intriguing pilot, directed by indie mainstay Antonio Campos and written by Derek Simonds, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Tuesday night.

On a beautiful day at the beach, Cora Tannetti gets up off her blanket, picks up a knife, and repeatedly stabs a random man sitting in front of her. So why does a regular person walk up to a stranger and stab him to death? This is the very basic premise of “The Sinner,” USA Network’s upcoming adaptation of Petra Hammesfahr’s book, starring Jessica Biel (“BoJack Horseman”), Bill Pullman (“Independence Day”), and Christopher Abbott (“James White”).
The murder scene, which happens very early in the pilot, is a shocking, brutal, and blunt moment, foreshadowing more gruesome surprises to come. If the scene marked the start of a traditional series, “The Sinner” would feel like it’s already stringing out its big reveal. There’s too little backstory and too many opaque teases toward Cora’s motivations in the first hour for us to stick around for five seasons...

An eight-episode close-ended series, The Sinner follows a young mother (Jessica Biel) who, when overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence and to her horror has no idea why.
The event launches an inverted and utterly surprising crime thriller whose driving force is not the “who” or the “what” – but the “why” – as an investigator (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman's buried motive.

USA Network has a slate of new pilots they're currently sorting through, and they've found a winner.
The Sinner, produced by and starring Jessica Biel, has been picked up to series. Bill Pullman will co-star in the series alongside Biel.
This will mark Biel's first series regular role since she played Mary Camden on 7th Heaven from 1996-2006. She has since been focusing on movies other than a small voice role on Family Guy.
Pullman's last series regular role was a comedy as the President of the United States on 1600 Penn during the 2012-13 television series.
Costarring Jenna Elfman and Josh Gad, that series only lasted 13 episodes.
Two other pilots, Damnation and The Tap, have been completed are awaiting their fate.
All three of the completed projects come from Universal Cable Productions, as does a fourth still in the casting phase.
That pilot, titled Unsolved, will tackle the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
